The Barnacle November 2011 Three Tree Point Yacht Club is an affordable family boating club that promotes enjoyment, appreciation, and care of the waters of Puget Sound. TTPYC Calendar of Events 2011 5 Winter Series November 8 General Meeting 19 Winter Series December 3 Winter Vashon Race 10 Christmas Party at the Seattle Yacht Club 31 New Year's Cruise January 7 Duwamish Head Race (SSS2) With your Barnacle, you will find a flyer for the Special Holiday Party at the Seattle Yacht Club. Be sure and reserve your spot ASAP! The Commodore's Corner Greetings racers, cruisers, and friends, I am honored and humbled to now be serving as your Commodore. I pledge to do my best to help us realize our vision of enjoying and caring for the waters of Puget Sound, further our mission of shared adventure and exploration, and keep focused on our goals of growth, education, and companionship. I welcome our fine new and returning officers. New to us are Kersten Hubbard as Vice Commodore, Ray Valpey as Cruise Fleet Chair, Steve Foss as Assistant Race Fleet Captain, Tim McShane and Doug Andrews as new Trustees-at-large, and Mike Ellis as Web Master. Returning heros and heroines include Caroline Mcshane as Treasurer, Laura Crews as Secretary, Gordon Kells-Murphy who has moved up to Race Fleet Captain, Joan Marie as Social Chair, and Jerry Stephenson, Dave Klein, and Don Brame as Trustees-at-large. In addition, Doug and Sharon Andrews will again serve as membership chairs, Rose Edmiston will continue as historian, Kristie Brame as Barnacle Editor, Tom Schacht as Records and Roster, and Carol Jones will manage our Ships Stores. Last, but certainly not least, Dave Garman, as Immediate Past Commodore, will be my valued guide as I embark on this new adventure. My hopes for this coming year are 1)continued membership growth through high profile activities that will attract more local folks who share our vision but don t yet know how membership can enrich their lives, 2) more shared leadership to enhance our sense of community (I plan to appoint assistants for Cruise and Social, a Shed Steward, a Bulletin Board God/Goddess, and some additional task forces), 3) progress in promoting Youth Sailing in cooperation with the marina, and 4) securing more consistent locations for our social events (I want us to continue working with marina leadership in this endeavor). All of this may entail re-examining our By-Laws to be sure they support our mission and goals of shared leadership. Change of Watch was, thanks to the tireless efforts of our social chair, Joan Marie, and her helpers, a grand event with great food, warm camaraderie, and some impressive dance floor moves.

Cruise Boat of the year was, once again, Sloe Tango and she challenges you all this year to get out and cruise more. It s fun! That Sinking Feeling award was presented to our dear Betty Haines, one who is a model of preparedness, but forgot her job sheets during a summer race. Betty wanted assurance that this award is for only for ONE year. So, keep your ears peeled and eyes open for 2012 "competitors". Please plan to attend this month s dinner social on Tuesday, November 8, at Mandarin Kitchen. Come at 6 for dinner, at 7 for our special guest speaker, Dr. Jack Putnam who serves on National Geographic ships as naturalist and photographer. He will share his adventures in the Arctic. And, remember the deadline for early bird discounted tickets ($50 each) to our First Ever (December 10) Holiday Extravaganza at SYC is November 14. See the Flyer in this Barnacle for details about our special guests and featured events for this amazing holiday celebration. Let s all celebrate together! Trustee Meetings are the last Tuesday of the month at my house, 7 PM. All are welcome. If you RSVP I will be able to let my cookie and beer steward (former Commodore Ray) know to allow for a larger gathering. Debra Valpey Social Corner Joan Marie, Chair November Social We are having dinner 6pm Tuesday 11/8 with Dr. Jack Putnam! After dinner Dr. Jack is going to show us photos and tell us about his latest Arctic shipboard expeditions with the National Geographic Society! WOOOT! This will be in Des Moines, WA at: The Yard Arm Pub! Yard Arm Pub 812 South 230th Street Des Moines WA 98198 206-824-2780 I visited there today to check it out and they have TWO parking lots, an upper one by their front door, and a lower lot that can handle twice as many cars. If using the lower lot you can walk around either side of the building to the front door. Looking forward to seeing you there, Joan Marie 206-755-7648

And a Chance to Practice! Alright, sailors! It's been nearly four months since your first class at the Hubbard's lovely barbecue, time to get your uke on! Saturday 11/12, 1 pm to 2:30 pm at the Des Moines United Methodist Church, I have reserved the choir room downstairs for a uke jam, practice, and sing along. Here is the address: Des Moines United Methodist Church 22225 9th Avenue South Des Moines, WA 98198 They have loads of parking in their north lot; park there and wander down to the bottom of the parking lot and look for the basement doors. We will cover the tunes from the first lesson PLUS pick up some new ones. We will also have a special guest artist, Chris Ramsey, who will give us a tour of several different types of ukes. Bring your uke, your tunes, and a dollar for the Food Bank. PS: You can invite friends! Let me know if you want a copy of the paper flyer emailed to you. See you there! XOXOXOX, Joan Marie 206-755-7648 And Don't Forget... The Spectacular Holiday Event! The Seattle Yacht Club Fireside Lounge 1807 E. Hamlin St. Seattle With featured guest speakers Anne and Laurence Yeadon-Jones Authors of the popular Dreamspeaker Cruising Guides Saturday evening, December 10 (5pm no-host bar) At this time of year, the Fireside Lounge will be in full, glorious, festive, Christmas regalia. The fire will be blazing. Live piano music will enhance the cocktail hour. See the attached flyer for more information and get your tickets early!

Race Fleet Corner GORDON KELLS-MURPHY Race Fleet Captain STEVEN FOSS Assistant Race Fleet Captain Calling all members! The Race Fleet is in need of people and boats to help with Race Committee duties. We still have several events that do not have a commitment for a Race Committee and boat. We are desperately trying to get as many racing boats out on the water as possible, and it would be a great help to have some members from our club step up and participate in our activities. Being Race Committee is an exciting and rewarding experience. You get front row seats to both starts and finishes of the races you officiate and it is a very legitimate excuse to go mess around on a boat. Call Gordon Kells-Murphy at 253-529-3188 if you would like to participate, either by helping with your own boat or by helping someone else on theirs. Pre-Order Duwamish Head Knitted Caps! TTPYC's Race Committee will be offering 4 different colored knitted caps (Navy, Royal Blue, Red and Athletic Grey) instead of T-shirts for the 2012 Duwamish Head Race. TTPYC members can "Pre- Order" them by emailing Tom Hubbard at thubbard84@msn.com with your color(s) and quantities. There is a limited number of each color so, order today

EXTRAS! Everett Opening Tom Schacht shared some information about a new reason to visit Everett. At the end of October, Café @ Marina will open at the Port of Everett s Waterfront Center located at 1205 Craftsman Way. Sounds like a great place for lunch. For more information check out their website: www.worldcoffeekiosk.com Gig Harbor Yacht Club Le Mans Race This race will be held Saturday, November 12, 2011. For more information, see the flyer attached to this Barnacle email. PHRF Meeting I went to the PHRF Directors meeting for Tom Schacht, as he had to be in Hawaii (poor boy!) The important information that I wanted to relay to the club is the Guest Membership. PHRF has a guest membership that you can get if you are not already a member. It is kind of like a one day trial membership. It is good for 30 hrs, and must be approved by the local handicapper, who would give you a temporary rating. The cost will be around $15.00 and limiting it to 2 guest memberships per boat per year. Since all the big boy races require that you have a PHRF rating, this is a good way to get your feet wet. For example, if you would like to compete in Duwamish Head in a regular class (not a cruising class) you can get a guest membership for just that race. Keep an eye out for a letter/article in 48 North explaining it some more. Pat Nelson is to be the new chief handicapper, to be voted in, in January. He has been working with the previous chief handicapper for a couple of years, now The next meeting of the board and all the handicappers with PHRF will be January 29 th at SYC. Shelley Conti Halloween Party It was another fine day for the Halloween party, with no rain or wind and warm temperatures. The maze was spooky with lots of booty inside. Stevie again gave rides to all that wanted one, even after dark. The chili was great and the Hallo-weenies done to perfection. With all the other great food to go with them, no one left hungry. A great time was has by all. Thank you Don and Doug for all your help in putting up the maze, BJ for helping to clean the barn and Dave et all for helping decorate. We had another great Halloween party. Shelley
