Newsletter February 2014 boatclub@ballaraths.net Message from the President February/March is a busy time with regular Regatta s. Our senior rowers had a successful Regatta on the Barwon with great trophies presented to our Boys Firsts. The recent Ballarat-Wendouree Regatta saw some promising performances from several crews, along with a couple of wins. Unfortunately the regatta was cut short due to conditions and many missed out on another chance to race which is always valuable experience. Congratulations to all crews. The upcoming St Patricks regatta on 23 February will be another chance for our crews to show their skills in front of another big crowd and vocal supporters. Thanks to the families who helped out with the Masters Hardware fundraising BBQ on both Saturday and Sunday while the Ballarat-Wendouree Regatta was on. It was a great success with good money raised! (Approximately. $900) The Boat Club Committee is delighted to see their fundraising efforts rewarded through the purchase of a new boat for use by Junior Crews. The boat has been named the Graeme Howard, in recognition of Graeme s many years of service as a member of the Ballarat High School Board. The Christening was attended by proud members of his family, including his sons who are past rowers/coxswains. A Dinner for Past Rowers will be held on Thursday 27 February, prior to the Head of Lake, with many past rowers keen to watch the regatta and support our crews. Jamie Winton (past rower) generously offered Pipers by the Lake as the venue, with the ticket price going directly towards fundraising for Boat Club. Thanks Jamie. Head of the lake, Friday 28 February, is coming up fast! Good Luck to all. Our End of Season Dinner will be held at The Miners Tavern Function Room on Sunday 23 March. It will be a send-off for the Boys and Girls 1st Crews who will attend the National Rowing Championships NSW the following week. I must also note the fantastic job Rob Simmonds is doing, having taken over the role of Rowing Director at the start of the Season. I m sure you have all experienced his enthusiasm for the rowing program and for our rowers success. Thanks Rob Go High School! In memory of Cameron Bell (Past Rower) The first of the BHS rowing camps were held in the early 80's when the 1st and 2nd crews pitched tents in the backyard of Phyllis and Peter Bell's beach house at Collendina near Ocean Grove. They travelled early each morning in to Geelong and rowed on the Barwon River. The Bells became involved when their son Cameron started rowing and also the fact that John Croft was a friend of Peter Bell s Cameron rowed for BHS for some years before Peter's work caused them to move to Bendigo. Cameron went on to become a highly respected and much admired Maths/Science teacher. He always spoke about how he would love to return to BHS and teach and to also become involved in the rowing program. On July 25th 2013, sadlly, Cam lost his battle of 1 year to an inoperable and aggressive brain tumour leaving behind a wife and three young children. He would be remembered by rowers of BHS who rowed for the school in the 1980's There are quite a few past rowers who would remember Cam. Cameron was also the Nephew of Marg and Graeme Howard.
