GAME 5 (2-2) ROAD GAME 5 (2-2) TONIGHT'S BROADCASTS FSFL WINZ (940 AM) WAQI (710 AM) FISH BITES The Miami Marlins, winners of two straight, take on the New York Mets in the second game of a three-game series at Citi Field, the second stop on Miami s season-opening road trip. LHP Adam Conley is making his first start of the season; he is 1-0, 1.11 in five career games (four starts) against the Mets, with his lone win coming in 2015. In four starts vs. New York, Conley has allowed just two earned runs in 22.0 innings (0.82),with 20 strikeouts to just three walks. Starting for the Mets will be RHP Robert Gsellman, who is marking his first career appearance against the Marlins. Tonight s game is the fifth game (2-2) of a six-game road trip to open the season for the Fish, who dropped two of three in DC to open the year. Following this series, the Marlins travel home to Miami for a six-game homestand, including their Home Opener on April 11 at 7:05 pm against Atlanta. The Braves will be in Miami for two games (April 11-12), followed by the Mets, who visit for four (April 13-16). ABOUT LAST NIGHT Miami, after falling behind 1-0 in the first, scored three in the second and two in the third en route to a 7-2 win over the Mets at Citi Field. Wei-Yin Chen, who recorded his first career ML hit, worked 6.0 innings, allowing one run for his first win of the season and his first since July 5, 2016 at Citi Field. Derek Dietrich had a two-run triple in the second to put the Marlins up, 2-1, and added another RBI in the fifth. Christian Yelich hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the third inning. Marcell Ozuna also had three hits and an RBI, and Adeiny Hechavarria had an RBI groundout. The Marlins were 4x8 with runners in scoring position and had their largest offensive output of the season. TAKING A BITE OF THE APPLE Giancarlo Stanton has hit 17 home runs at Citi Field, his most at any road ballpark, including five last season. The 17 homers are also the most by any visiting player at Citi Field, four more than Adam LaRoche & Chase Utley. Stanton hit two homers in each of his last two games here, July 5-6, last season. Christian Yelich, who homered last night, has homered in each of his last four games here, including three games Aug. 30-Sept. 1, last season; the streak is the longest ever by a Marlin for most consecutive games at Shea/Citi Field with a home run; Jeff Conine had three (June 15-Aug. 5, 1995). In 18 games here, J.T. Realmuto has three homers, his most ay any visiting ballpark. FOUND A WEI Wei-Yin Chen recorded his first Major League hit last night, in his 52nd career at-bat. The 51 hitless at-bats to start a career ranked as the fourth-most among players who made their MLB debuts in 1900 or later. Jon Lester (2006-2015) had 66 hitless at bats to start his career. Joey Hamilton (1994-95) had 54 hitless at bats before his first hit. Ron Herbel (1964-1965) was hitless in his first 55 career at bats. - Elias MAKE 'EM COUNT Marcell Ozuna, who went 3x4 last night, has hit safely in each of the Marlins first four games, the only Marlin with a hit in all four games this season. He is hitting.412 (7x17) overall and his seven hits and four RBI are tied for the team lead, despite having no extra-base hits. Ozuna is also 3x4 with runners in scoring position. Last April, Ozuna hit just.229 (19x83) and he owned a career.267 (67x251) mark in April entering this season. A LITTLE BIT MOORE Tyler Moore is 2x2 this season, with both at-bats coming as a pinch-hitter, including a game tying RBI-single in the ninth inning last night. Only three Marlins have ever opened the season going perfect in three-or-more consecutive pinch hit appearances: Justin Bour (4x4 in 2015), Logan Morrison (3x3 in 2012), and Ronny Paulino (3x3 in 2010). OPENING DAY ROSTER Miami set its 2017 Opening Day roster on Sunday, opening the season with 13 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and four outfielders. PITCHERS: RHP Kyle Barraclough, LHP Wei-Yin Chen, LHP Adam Conley, RHP Tom Koehler, RHP Dustin McGowan, RHP David Phelps, RHP AJ Ramos, RHP Dan Straily, RHP Junichi Tazawa, RHP José Ureña, RHP Edinson Volquez, RHP Nick Wittgren, and RHP Brad Ziegler. CATCHERS: A.J. Ellis and J.T. Realmuto. INFIELDERS: Justin Bour, Derek Dietrich, Dee Gordon, Adeiny Hechavarria, Tyler Moore, and Miguel Rojas. OUTFIELDERS: Marcell Ozuna, Giancarlo Stanton, Ichiro Suzuki, and Christian Yelich. The Marlins will begin the season with three players on the 10-day disabled list; RHP Odrisamer Despaigne (left oblique strain), LHP Jeff Locke (left shoulder tendinitis) and INF Martín Prado (left hamstring strain). The Marlins roster has nine players that were not on the Opening Day roster in 2016: Kyle Barraclough, José Ureña and Nick Wittgren, who all started last season in the minors for Miami, along with six newcomers to the organization: Edinson Volquez, Dan Straily, Junichi Tazawa, Brad Ziegler, A.J. Ellis, and Tyler Moore. SILVER AND GOLD Christian Yelich, who was recently named to the All-World Baseball Classic Team this spring, entered 2017 after winning a National League Silver Slugger Award winner in 2016 and a NL Gold Glove Award in 2014. Since 2014, Yelich ranks third among NL outfielders in average (.294), behind Charlie Blackmon (.297) and Starling Marte (.295), doubles (98) and OBP (.368) and ranks fourth in hits (486). Yelich is one of only 10 active players to win a Gold Glove & Silver Slugger in the outfield, joining Carlos Beltran, Andrew McCutchen, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Yoenis Cespedes, Carlos Gonzalez, Adam Jones, Mookie Betts and teammate Ichiro Suzuki. BACK FOR MORE Ichiro Suzuki enters his 17th Major League season, his third with the Marlins. Ichiro recorded ML career hit #3,000 on Aug. 7 last season, with a triple at Coors Field. He finished the season with 3,030 career hits in the Majors and ranks 25th on MLB s all-time hit list. He is 23 hits behind Rod Carew, who had 3,053 career hits. He had 27 multi-hit games on the road last season, which ranked tied for fifth in the National League, a list topped by fellow Marlins' Christian Yelich and Martín Prado, who tied for the lead with 30. APRIL 8 In his 2005 debut, Dontrelle Willis holds the Nationals scoreless on five hits, with a walk and three strikeouts, as he throws the first of two consecutive complete-game shutouts to open the season. In first full Major League season in 2016, went 8-6 with 3.85 ERA (133.1 ip/57 er) in 25 starts. Ranked second among Marlins starters in ERA and third in innings pitched, wins and strikeouts (124). Is making sixth career appearance, fifth start, against New York, going 1-0 with 1.11 ERA (24.1/3). Last faced Mets on September 26, 2016, tossing 3.0 shutout innings, while allowing two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Has yet to allow a run in two previous starts at Citi Field, spanning 13.0 innings. Missed 29 games from August 15-September 25 with tendinitis in left third finger. Combined to strike out 17 in two starts from April 13-19, which marked most strikeouts by a Marlins left-handed starter in consecutive appearances since Dontrelle Willis struck out 18 from Sept. 10-15, 2006 (Stats LLC). Did so for second time from June 1-7. In research provided by Elias, Conley, who left game with 5-0 lead after throwing 116 pitches, was first pitcher in Major League history to be removed from a start with a lead after pitching at least 7.2 innings without allowing a hit. Previous alltime record had been established just three weeks before, when Dodgers rookie Ross Stripling pitched 7.1 hitless innings in his Major League debut on April 8 at San Francisco. Earned second win of season on May 5 vs. Arizona. Allowed two hits and a walk with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Did not allow a hit until fourth inning, running hitless innings streak to 11.1. Marked longest such streak by starter in Majors last season, and longest by any starter in Club history. Ranked as second-longest stretch overall, behind Armando Benitez s 14.0 hitless innings from May 4-June 4, 2004. In addition, tied Marlins record for fewest hits allowed (2) in a two-start stretch, equaling accomplishment of Al Leiter in May 1996. Walked one batter or fewer in 10 of first 18 starts and 16 of first 29 career starts. Marked second-most such games by a Marlins starting pitcher through first 29 career starts, behind Brian Meadows (18). Finished season with 12 starts allowing no more than one walk, going 5-2, 2.49 (68.2/19) in those outings. Struck out 37 batters across six starts in June, setting new career high for strikeouts in a month, surpassing 30 in September 2015. Produced an 8.37 strikeouts/9 innings rate, which ranked second on team, behind José Fernández (12.49), and 20th among NL starters. Posted three wins and 1.82 ERA (29.2/6) in five July starts, both career bests in a calendar month. His July ERA ranked second among NL left-handed starters, behind Madison Bumgarner (1.75) and seventh among all NL starters (12th in Majors). His three July wins also tied longest winning streak of his career. Held opponents scoreless six times and has nine scoreless starts in career, trailing only José Fernández (11) for most such starts through first 36 career starts by a Marlins pitcher. Recorded a 0.88 home runs/9 innings ratio that ranked 11th in NL and second among NL left-handed starters, behind only Clayton Kershaw (0.48).
