September 23, 2016 Pairings Announced for Boys & Girls Soccer State Tournaments A record number of teams were paired this morning for the 23rd Annual IHSAA Boys and Girls Soccer State Tournaments which begin in 10 days. A total of 299 boys squads are entered, equaling the record number that played in 2013, and 266 girls teams are accounted for, six more than the previous high set each of the last two years. The girls sectionals 32 in Class 2A and 16 in Class A will run Oct. 3 8. Girls regionals will be played Wednesday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 15 with Class 2A matches in a two round, Wednesday Saturday format. The Class A contests differ as a one match affair played that Saturday. Semi states in both classes will be played Saturday, Oct. 22 in a two round format with the winners advancing to the state championship matches on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Indianapolis. The Class 2A, No. 1 Penn girls team, last year s state runner up, will meet South Bend Adams in Sectional 6 play at South Bend Riley while Class A top ranked Indianapolis Bishop Chatard will begin its post season against Indianapolis Scecina in Sectional 42 at Heritage Christian. Class 2A No. 4 Brebeuf Jesuit will begin its defense of last year s state championship against Pike in Sectional 19 at Ben Davis, while two time defending Class A state champ Fort Wayne Canterbury, currently ranked No. 19, drew a bye in Sectional 37 at Bellmont. Boys sectional action at 64 sites 32 in each class also will be played Oct. 3 8. Sixteen regional sites eight in each class will host two rounds each on Thursday, Oct. 13, and Saturday, Oct. 15. Semi states will be played at four sites on Saturday, Oct. 22 in a two round format with the survivors squaring off in the state championship matches on Saturday, Oct. 29. In Class 2A, the top ranked Harrison (West Lafayette) boys team, last year s state runner up, will meet Frankfort in Sectional 13 at Lafayette Jefferson while Class A, No. 1 Lawrenceburg will host No. 14 Rising Sun right out of the gate in Sectional 57 action. Ninthranked Center Grove, last year s Class 2A state champion, will host Martinsville in Sectional 24. Thirdranked Mishawaka Marian is the defending Class A state champion and will begin its run for another title against home standing LaVille in Sectional 36. State tournament brackets, including dates and times for each match, will be uploaded later today for each respective tournament at IHSAA.org. Page 1 of 12

Notables About the Draw To conduct the random drawing for the state tournament, the IHSAA places ping pong balls representing each school in a given sectional into a lottery style air mix machine. A motorized fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in game one with the second ball representing the home team in game one. The third ball to come out is the visitor in game two and the fourth ball the home team in game two. That same method is followed through all sectionals, regionals and semistates to determine every team s placement in the bracket.
