Afte opening up a field office in Bowling Geen ealie this month, voluntees and staffes fo the Obama pesidential campaign wee out canvassing the city and campus communities this past weekend duing movein. But the pesidential campaign of lohn McCain is hoping a solid Republican base outside of the campus will lead to victoy. Nealy 40 voluntees took to the steets all day Satuday and Sunday to egiste seveal hunded votes, said k, ii n\ Bazbaz, the Obama campaign's Nothwest Ohio communications diecto. Voluntees even tolled aound Main and WboMB Steets on Satuday night into the ealy hous of Sunday moning looking fo potential votes. Why all the attention fo Bowling Geen? The pize fo the Obama campaign is the youth vote paticulaly the nealy 16,500 students on BGSU's main campus. "Ou campaign in Ohio is eally focusing on the student vote and on college campuses," Bazbaz said. "They ae paticulaly impotant to the campaign." And the votes of 16,000 college students can mean a lot to Obama in a state whee Democats lost the pesidential election by just 118,601 votes in 2001. Repote Sidewalks, landscaping and painting ae a just a few examples of what the administation is doing to impove the appeaance of campus. The Undegaduate Student Govenment pushed fo the committee known as "Campus Beautification" that will be woking on impoving the image of the campus. "This has tuned out to be ou biggest victoy thus fa and it has been taken to the next level," said USG Pesident lohn Waynick. The committee will be focusing on what needs to be impoved and finding pivate donos to help fund the poject. "t's been a constant push fo the student govenment," Waynick said. The esidence halls have had impovements since students left last sping semeste. "We want eveyone to take pide in ou campus," said Diecto of Residence Life Michael Giffel. Thee was a $900,000 electic upgade in McDonald lull and epais wee done on the loading dock and sidewalks. Students may also notice newly painted hand ailings and new doos on the sooity cottages. The committee stated meeting in Novembe to plan the events that will take place thoughout the 2010 academic yea in celebation of the Univesity's 100th annivesay, which officially occus on Nov. 10,2010. Committee Co-chai Lay Weiss has woked fo the Univesity a numbe of yeas and wants to make this centennial celebation count. "Thee's only going to be one of these," Weiss said. While Ribeau was suppotive and obtained the budget the committee needed to get stated, Weiss said nteim Pesident Caol Catwight is also getting onboad witli the plans. "She's vey excited about this," Weiss said. Dean of Students Jill Can chais the only subcommittee with student involvement and ' thinks the student events planning subcommittee is geneating some geat ideas. "The students on the committee ae wondeful," Ca said. Ca's committee was challenged to come up with events and displays that will get the Student body inteested in the Univesity's centennial. The goal is to have one event pe month leading up to the official centennial date in Novembe. Students have suggested concets, student oganization histoical displays and special athletic events. A kick off event is being planned fo Januay 2010 when students come back fom winte beak, but the specifics ae still being decided Though six students ae aleady bainstoming, Canwelcomes additional student input. "We ae always open to student involvement," Can said. She ecommends students contact Weiss o co-chai Kim Mclioom if. they want to join centennial planning. The maketing and pubic elations subcommittee is also doing its pat to build centennial buzz. "This yea we want to ceate awaeness," said TeTy Rentne, diecto of the school of communications and chai of the maketing and public elations subcommittee. Rentne said maketing and public elations is woking closely with the Univesity Bookstoe in getting centennial mechandise on the shelves next yea and is hopeful the lit.ml home page will also get people thinking about the centennial. "The Web site will have a huge pesence," Rentne said. Students can expect to see centennial bannes with the slogan on them in sping 2009 and mechandise in fall 2009. Rentne said they'e also hoping to have billboads, special giveaways, a 100-yea pictue book and special stickes epesenting the Univesity's 100 yeas available fo depatment letteheads. The Centennial Annivesay Commission will meet once a month stating Fiday, Sept. 26. OBAMA Fom Page 1 to 29 cowd. But Obama is not the only one seeking out votes in the Bowling Geen aea. The McCain campaign ecently announced it would be opening up its own field offices in Wood County and neighboing Lucas County. Focusing less on the campus cowd, the GOP campaign will concentate moe on the ual aeas of Nothwest Ohio that have been "a consistently stong vote block" fo the Republican paty, said Paul lindsay, a spokesman fo the McCain campaign. The aeas in and aound Wood County have indeed poven a successful aea fo Republicans. F.ven though Obama has a fundaising lead ove McCain oveall in Ohio McCain has aised nealy fou times as much as Obama in the ibledo aea. And Republican pesidential candidates have won in Wood County in evey election since Fanklin Roosevelt. Whethe o not Obama's youth appeal o McCain's solid pany base pay-off in Ohio will be seen on Election Day. The Pesidential election will be held Nov. 4 and votes in Ohio must K- egisteed by Oct. 6. A lot of the health sevices on campus ae povided by the Student Health Cente, which has a staff of tained physicians to help students by giving the students a diagnosis and pescibing medications. The cente also has its own phamacy to eceive the pescibed medications. The health cente has a lab whee blood count tests, mono tests, pegnancy test, uinalysis and apid flu tests ae done.
