Thee's a eason fo this. Listen. Just as childen dess up as thei favoite chaacte and go fom house to house hoping to get something wothwhile dopped into thei sacks, so do politicians put on a mask and confont the public in ode to gain something fo themselves. A ghost, a witch o a goblin may show up on you doostep today, and you will be expected to give them a Snickes ba o, if you'e eally cheap, a stick of chewing gum. A pesident, a senato o a Democat may appea on you television sceen o will have a lette put in you mailbox today and you will be expected to slip him o he a sawbuck, a c-note o, if you'e eally uninvolved, just a vote. Childen spend weeks pepaing fo today-- tying to get just the ight shade of geen fo thei Fankenstein mask o the ight colo wig fo thei Boy Geoge outfit. They'll hit evey K-Mat and dime stoe in the neighbohood going though bin afte bin in thei quest fo thei "chaacte." Politicians spend yeas looking fo the ight issues to suppot o ty to get the backing of the best public figues in ode to ceate the pecise way in which they want the public to view them. Politicians ae like little childen, when it comes ight down to it. They woy about the way people peceive them and the wok had to make themselves look like someone they may o may not be. When Pesident Reagan jumps off Ai Foce One and snaps a salute at the Maine guad, o when Walte Mondale olls up his sleeves and sweats and shouts at a goup of woking people, they ae pojecting an image which they have spent a lot oftime developing. Suounding themselves with advisos and speechwites and imagemakes, pesons unning fo public office want to sell themselves. They want to make the votes believe that who they seem to be is who they eally ae. But thee's no "tuth in advetising" in politics. They may be no moe a John Wayne-type o a John Kennedy-type than the little kid who desses like Batman is a supeheo. But the diffeence lies in that the politician wants the votes to believe them. And most votes do. The innocent concept of "Tick o Teat" has been waped by politics into "Democat o Republican" "Libeal o Consevative" o "Man o Monste." The Dan McCullough News Edito TRICK OR TREAT I Inside Wednesd cacl"u.: ) uuth of ycstc. 1 '-"' have gown up still clinging to the Halloween game, but with the end esults being so much moe than a sack of sweets. They now want powe, influence and pestige. The need fo these things is like an addictive dug to them -- one which they will go to any lengths to possess. This is moe fightening than the scaiest spook. Politicians have spent a lot of time and money so that they can have bette costumes than anybody else. The images they hope to poject have to be the stongest, the most influential and hold up to citicism moe than anybody else's. They need to win evey costume contest, they have to dunk fo moe apples and they must get the biggest sack of ewads. It's thei job. But at the same time, politicians ae doomed. They can't eve take off the mask in public. They cannot elax thei D. Sadonicus gin. Thei choice to ente politics has condemned them to a life of constantly weaing the veil. Fo politicians, it's Halloween 365 days a yea. Little childen don't appeciate thei ability to take off thei costume when they ae done canvassing the neighbohood fo teats. They can hang up the sheet and wipe off the makeup -- and settle down to the pile of candy that they can eat until thei teeth ot fom thei head. But alas, poo politicians! They can neve know the pleasue of dopping the sham. They can neve fully enjoy the spoils of thei victoies because they have to woy about that deaded beast that haunts thei deams and teoizes thei waking hous -- eelection. So this yea let's do something nice fo ou politicians. When they wite you asking fo some kind of contibution, this Halloween let's just send them a Snickes ba. By CINDY RAUCKHORST News Stuff The $5.5 million damage suit filed by Fathe Andew Geeley in Septembe, 1982 against James Wintes, managing edito of Note Dame Magazine, has been dopped. Geeley, a Roman Catholic piest and autho, oiginally filed the suit two yeas ago in Cook County Cicuit Cout claiming that Wintes had 'wongfully appopiated" the piest's pivate files and odeing Wintes to etun immediately all copies of the files. Accoding to Bill Maddux, Wintes' lawye, the conflict began when Geeley called Wintes a "thief, lia, and mateial-steale" duing an appeaance on the Phil Donahue show. Geeley appaently expessed simila views in seveal othe television appeaances. Following the accusation by Geeley, Wintes filed a S3 milion libel suit in July, The suit chaged that Geeley had given him pemission to examine the piest's pesonal files while he was woking on an aticle about Geeley in Mach, Maddux eacted positively to the dopping of Geeley's countesuit a month ago. He concludes fom the action that Geeley's agument "lacked meit fom the beginning." He believes that Geeley only made the statement about Wintes to "get publicity." He also said he feels that by dopping the countesuit, Geeley indiectly aided Wintes in the upcoming cout battle. Maddux said that Geeley's decision to dop his countesuit has not influenced Wintes' oiginal suit, which continues. Peviously, Wintes' paty had made an offe to Geeley to dop thei suit if Geeley would etact his statements against Wintes as false. Geeley, howeve, efused to acknowledge the offe made by Wintes. Attempts to each Geeley wee unsuccessful. The date fo the Wintes vesus Geeley tial has not yet been set. System to avet food cises called inefficient Associated Pess PARIS- "Ibe headlong ush to escue Ethiopian famine victims undescoes what specialists call a disastously skewed and inefficient intenational system fo aveting Afican food cises. "Just sending food does not stop stavation," said Paul McCabe, a consultant fo the U.S. Office of Foeign Disaste Assistance who specializes in dought eflief. "If you dump a lot of food into a county, no matte how needy, without things like tucks, spae pats, fuel and salaies fo dives, you will lose the food needed to save lives," he added. Damatic footage of the effects of dead and staving people in Ethiopia, shown on NBC's "Nightly News" last Tuesday, pompted a temendous outpouing of donations. But the elief specialists say that when lage sums of public and pivate money ae hastily appopiated, food can be wasted because it's dispatched unde confused cicumstances. Local authoities, they say, often cutail involvement by outside expets essential to distibuting aid faily and quickly and supevising elief pogams. Political concens complicate humanitaian effots. Much of the famine aeas ae held by ebels. "Authoities ae not going to feed implacable enemies, anywhee in Afica, no matte what the United Nations might tell them," McCabe said. The U.N. Food and Agicultue Oganization in Rome maintains an ealy waning system, but many citize the FAO fo exaggeating some situations and undeestimating othes. FAO epots say l <;O million Aficans ae theatened by stavation, a figue eached by adding total populations of affected counties. Specialists say the actual figue is close to 20 million, adding that oveestimates make it hade to pinpoint the neediest cases. The poblem of evaluating the impact of dought is complkated by uneven epoting, and political consideations, of local govenments. When dought again stuck the Sahel egion in 1983, Gambia, tiny and well-oganized, quickly epoted its needs. Uppe Volta, in f.t wose shape, landlocked and eeling fom a evolution, was silent fo months. As a esult, Gambia was listed as Afica's thid wost case. Uppe Volta was 23d. Some govenments ely on the outside wold to make up food shotfalls automatically, while using thei own budgets fo ams puchases o such luxuies as a epoted whiskey shipment Ethiopia odeed fo national celebations. Yet othes, such as Botswana and Zimbabwe, mashal thei meage eseves to buy needed food on the intenational maket. When govenments neglect food poduction and distibution, dono nations must decide whethe to help o to make local govenments face up to thei esponsibilities towad thei own people. "Of couse the govenment should have done something ealie," emaked a Catholic missionay in Uppe Volta, who asked not to be identified by name. "But now mothes and babies ae dying. Do we let them stave?" Specialists note, too, that socialist expeiments in Afican agicultue have led diectly to ma-;sive cop failues, fa beyond the nomal effects of ecent doughts. Counties such a<; Angola and Guinea, with kh soil and good ainfall, have suffeed damatically. McCabe cites Ghana as an example of what authoities and local maket foces can do. The cutback is intended to shoe up oil pices by educing supply. It is expected that Saudi Aabia - OPEC's biggest poduce- would accept the biggest cut in its poduction quota, cuently 5 million baels a day. The plan to limit OPEC poduction in the face of an expected ise in oil demand duing the winte heating season is designed to save OPEC fom the second cut in its pices in 19 months. The fist cut was in Mach 1983 when the catel eluctantly dopped its pice by $5 a bael to the cuent official level of S29. Industy analysts say a dop in OPEC's poduction ceiling to 16 million baels a day could escue it fom a pice decline this-winte. But many doubt the catel's moe hadpessed membes could esist the temptation of pumping moe than thei shae of oil when demand picked up. lf such cheating polifeated, pices would be expected to stat falling again. That would make it even moe likely that OPEC would be foced to cut its pices by sping whe~ oil demand usually declines. To Meloe, chief economist at Texaco, Inc., and one of many industy officials watching the OPEC emegency talks, said a ceiling of 16 million baels a day "will have a bite by the middle of Novembe." 1 He said pices would stat ising again, assuming the ceiling was stictly obseved by all membes. He declined to comment on the chances of the catel musteing such discipline. Also, Fawzi Shakshouk, the newly appointed oil ministe of Ubya, told epotes that Nigeia, Iaq and Ian would not cut poduction because the thee wee "special cases." He did not elaboate, but Nigeia is suffeing a sevee economic ecession and Ian and Iaq ae at wa with each othe. Kevin Williams featues staff wite The band took a shot beak afte playing 40 minutes, and when they came back, it was without the band - just Cosby, Stills, Nash, and a couple acoustic guitas. By fa, the highlight of the show was the clas sic "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" which is what bought the cowd into the show. The band came back fo a endi tion of the old favoite "Wincheste Cathedal" complete with stained glass windows pojected behind the stage. The concet closed with anothe oldie, "Wooden Ships," but the audience wasn't satisfied. Cosby, Stills & Nash etuned on stage and launched into what is pobably thei best-known song and biggest hit, "Teach You Childen." Again, the cowd got thei chance to sing the chous, though it sounded like half the audience sang "cy" instead of"dle" fo the second vese. They fail to view him as a national leade who had managed to find the cement to hold his stange coalition togethe, while Mondale - the pofessed coalition politician - cannot. Reagan's ideology does play a ole, that of making him appea steadfast, even fo those (like the Baby Boom youngstes) who disagee with his ightist stand on the "social issues." This is what happens when the image of a national leade eaches beyond his detailed positions. Roughly, thee ae two kinds of leades in a democacy. One is the potean leade - a Hubet Humphey, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Cate, Walte Mondale. He changes and adapts to time, cicumstance, inteest goups, while he pleads fo tust fom each and talks about what it means to be a leade. The second kind has little selfconsciousness, does little shifting of positions and even less explaining of self and asking fo tust. Hay Tuman belonged hee, and among Republicans Dwight Eisenhowe and now Reagan, although he is less libeal than eithe Tuman o Ike. Both candidates today ae appealing to Tuman's memoy. Reagan undetook a petty contived tip on Tuman's whistlestop campaign tain. And Mondale invokes Tuman's pecedent in coming fom behind to win in although Tuman was the incumbent then, as Reagan is now. Neithe man is Hay. And even Hay, most ofthe time, didn't have the tust of the people. As 1948 was his bight point, 1984 may pove Reagan's high point. But fo bette o wose, Reagan is what he has been, which begets tust. That is why his stumbles and excesses have not destoyed him. Thee ae not geat meanings in him, as thee wee in Fanklin Roosevelt. The people vote fo him as an existential fact, and the media commentatos who ae baffled by it ae out of touch with the people. Much of the publicity has distoted ou message, by emphasizing the wod, "suicide." Fo example, a New Yok Times headline ead, "Students to Vote on Suicide." It is impotant that ou ideas be undestood. Ou efeendum, passed by a 60 pecent majoity, equests that "suicide tablets be stocked at Bown's Health Sevices, fo optional student use in the event of a nuclea wa." This is not a suicidal o defeatist appoach to the theat of nuclea wa. It is aimed at dispelling the notion that we could suvive such a holocaust. Suicide pills negate civil defense. In a nuclea wa, thee is no defense James R. Knebelman guest column (unless, pehaps, you ae a geneal o a pesident, with access to deep undegound sheltes). Hoping fo suvival is dangeous, because it makes the idea of nuclea wa moe acceptable, and thus inceases the chances that it could occu. Many Bown students voted fo the efeendum to expess thei fea and despai, in a puely symbolic way. Othes actually want Bown to stockpile the pills, because they conside the theat of nuclea wa a vey eal one. Would the idea of suicide seem so bizae, if you wee dying a slow, painful death fom adiation sickness? It would be moe akin to euthanasia. Would it be dangeous to stockpile poison on a college campus? Well, the chemisty building at Bown is aleady chock-full of deadly substances, including cyanide, that could be used by some unbalanced peson to ham himself o othes. Suicide pills could be secued in a vault, and would pose no dange. By stockpiling eal pills, we would emphasize that nuclea wa is a eal theat. The missiles sue ae eal. Is stockpiling suicide pills tantamount to accepting nuclea wa? Hadly. Who wants to kill themselves? Most of us don't. By equating nuclea wa with suicide, we ae uging people to stop it fom happening. What can be done? Well, a mutual, veifiable feeze on the poduction of nuclea weapons would be a e VIewpol nt Viewpoint wants to bea fom you. If you stat. This is misleading. The United States has neve been stategically weake than the Soviet Union. We have been at paity with each othe since the sixties, when we lost ou stategic supeioity. What Reagan eally wants is to estoe Ameican supeioity (this is exactly what an oute space "defensive" system would do, if successful). But this will not incease ou secuity. On the contay, it is de-stabalizing and dangeous, not to mention daining on ou economy. Supeioity is dangeous, because it pomotes the idea that a "victoy" is possible, and, like hoping fo post-wa suvival, it inceases the chances that a nuclea wa could occu. But ams contol is not enough. Even if both sides cut thei stockpile of nuclea waheads by half, thee would still be enough fiepowe with which to destoy ouselves. Bette elations with Moscow ae essential. This means moe than simply meeting with the Soviets. It entails, among othe things, a e-evaluation of ou position in the wold vis a vis the Soviet Union and the Thid Wold. Should we continue to confuse intenal popula evolutions with Soviet expansionism? Why did the Administation smothe (fo six months) a govenment epot stating that the Soviets ae not contolling Nicaagua? Ou dogmatic, inflexible appoach to leftist govenments is, ionically, pushing these counties towads the Soviet Union, and developing new oppotunities fo a conflict that could end in nuclea wa. We must coectly evaluate when ou secuity is being theatened, and when it is not. And we must not only stop the anti-soviet hetoic, but also communicate to Moscow ou sincee desie to co-exist in peace. This may seem naive to some, but it is less naive than equating geate numbes of missiles with geate secuity. These ideas ae not new and they ae only some of the ways in which to avoid nuclea wa. But the Reagan Administation has done nothing in this diection. The pupose of equesting suicide pills fo use afte a nuclea wa is to show the ugency of the poblem, to show that students ae afaid, that they conside nuclea wa a distinct possibility in thei futue, and that they conside such a wa unenduable. The govenment must discad "defensive" sta-was weapons pojects and dubious civil defense plans. We must act now, befoe a wa is stated, to pevent nuclea suicide. james R. Howeve, egadless of the pefomance o ecod of the team, today I witnessed the tue chaacte of ou playes shining billiantly. Today was the most enjoyable lunch I have had hee in two yeas, and it had nothing to do with the food. My pleasue was totally the esult of a young man we have all come to know and love - Allen Pinkett. Upon leaving the lunch line, Allen was engulfed by a goup of fifth gade students who wee visiting the campus. As the childen wee usheed away, Allen sat down to eat his lun<:h with fiends, but the childen no longe caed to pay attention to thei food. Please do not accuse me of saying that Ronald Reagan is Adolph Hitle eincanate. What I am saying is that the the amount of blind woship pesently given Ronald Reagan is vey unhealthy fo ou society, and is asking fo touble. To say, as some Note Dame students have, that "image" is the key, that it is impotant as a leadeship quality in and of itself to the Ignoance of facts and issues, is to invite ou politicians to lie and dupe us. john Matthews Moissey Hall Student Libeation Days suppot a wong image Dea Edito: As one of the medical students in Genada at this time la.-;t yea, I am deeply concened about the so-called "Student Ubeation Days" being oganized on college campuses by ight-wing goups, pupotedly to celebate the United States invasion of Genada. Whethe my life and those of my fellow medical students wee endangeed by the coup that ovethew Mauice Bishop is vey much open to question. It Is clea, howeve, that ou "libeation" by the Reagan Administation came at a teible cost: dozens of young Ameican, Cuban and Genadan lives. 111at is a fact that the people oganizing "Student Ubcation Day" may not want you to know. No may they want you to know the couse they'd like to see ou nation follow in othe pats of Latin Ameica, namely such places as Nicaagua, El Salvado and Honduas. If Ameican toops ae sent to those counties as some would like, they won't be facing a few hunded gloified policeman and Cuban constuction wokes as they did in Genada. They won't be fighting on a sunny topical island, as they did in Genada. If Ameican toops ae sent to Cental Ameica, it's moe likely they will fight thousands of well-tained soldies and gueillas willing to give eveything to defend thei homelands and thei ideals. As in Vietnam, Ameican soldies will face the uncetainty of whethe the peasants in the village befoe them ac fiend o foe. They will battle again in scoching heat, dense and hllly teain and unfamilia teitoy. Polls show that most students, as well as the majoity of Ameicans, want peace in Cental Ameica though political and diplomatic means, not moe bloodshed though clumsy and misguided Ameican intevention. If the oganizes behind "Student Libeation Day" mean to suggest though thei mindless celebation of the inva.-;ion of Genada that students suppot militay adventues on behalf of unpopula and epessive dictatos in Cental Ameica, I suggest they ask students fist. Instead of celebating the libeation of students, thei actions only encouage the decimation of students. The publicity fom thei allies, if not counteed immediately, encouages the wost tendencies of ou govenment to believe it will be politically acceptable to send us off to wa. 111cy should ecognize, as El Salvadoan pesident Jose Napolean Duate has, that hundeds of yeas of povety, exploitation and despai ac at the oots of the conflict in Cental Ameica, not the stuggle between foeign ideologies. They should ecognize, as most students do, that it only huts the pospects fo peace when ou govenment suppots those who have the most to gain by continued bloodshed: the contas in Nicaagua and the govenment-toleated death squads in El Salvado and elsewhee. Thee still is time to act befoe ou govenment sends us on a hopeless mission in Cental Ameica. Regadless of the foolishness of these ight-wing "Student Libeation Days," let us ensue that ou county not epeat the mistakes of the past by getting involved in an endless wa on the wong side of the battle. Moty Weissfelne St. Geoge's Uni,esity School of Medicine Class of 1987 ~ IHI5 TRNN IS ~ ~0~~ for ~lory, THiv TRAI~ Mondale is a candidate of the bain and soul Dea Edito: Seveal ecent polls have evealed that the majoity of Ameicans disagee with Ronald Reagan on specific issues such a.~ the envionment, defense, the deficit, and social spending. Issues ae the "bains" of politics, but it seems as if the majoity of Ameicans lean towad Pesident Reagan because his vision of a stong Ameica appeals to the soul. We would like to suggest that Walte Mondale should appeal to the bains and the soul of votes, especially those of us in the ND/SMC community. Loyalty is the soul of politics. Many of ou 19th centuy Iish ancestos spoke dispaingly of those who "took the soup." They wee efeing to those who gave up thei highest values (enouncing thei Catholic faith) in etun fo the mateial ewads (food) offeed to them by the Bitish duing Ieland's potato famine. Many of us may be denying ou ancestal loyalty in a simila, moe subtle, manne. It goes something like this: "Why should I cae if the numbe of people living in povety has inceased ecently (evesing a 20 yea tend)? Wby should I cae if the unemployment ate emains at its high level? Rea~otan's policies ae benefitting my family ight now. Why should I suppot Mondalc?" Wby? Because in looking out fo ou shottem economic well-being we ae denying the legacy of ou anl cstos. Hee, ou ancestos ac pedominantly ethnic Catholic immigants. On aiving in Ameica, they tuned to the Democatic Paty as the paty of the poo, the minoities, and the woking man. Denying the heitage of ou ancestos is not meely an abstact action, it is also denying ou ancestos' vision of an Ameica that i~ stong because it look.~ out fo the inteests of the least among us - the woke, the poo, the minoities - as well as the uppe classt s. "Tickle down" economics would he a slap in the face to those who believed in an Ameica that was stonge in the long un because it looked out fo the weakest of its membes. The Mondalc/Fcao ticket is loyal to ou ancestal vision of a stong Ameica, a clea altenative to the Reagan vesion of stength based on massive ams build-up and domestic neglect. That is why, despite dak pedictions of a Reagan landslide, we will "light a single candle" by voting fo Walte Mondalc, a man who will make Ameica tuly stong. The Belles have placed tenth fo two consecutive yeas in the Nationals and ae one of only fou elite schools to finish in the top ten consecutively - all this while being the only non-scholashipawading univesity in the fist 23 finishes of the 1984 tounament. The 1985 Nationals will seve as a eal test of pogess fo the Belles, a test fom which the esults might supise even them. IO UnltlldW.y "The playes have shown good concentation and have put foth a good effot. They have had a sense of pupose, a sense of togetheness which is vey good," stated thidyea coach John Killeen. Killeen's women boast a 9-1 dualmeet ecod; thei only loss coming on the opening weekend of play against Butle in a match in which no senios played. 16 ~ ~ ~ S~ots Wednesday, Octobe 31, page 16 Halloween comes ealy fo Iish Chuck Feeby Spots Wite Iish Item~, Hello again, eveybody! Halloween came ealy fo Gey Faust last week. Just as almost eveybody pepaed to close the coffin on the Note Dame football team, the copse aose to walk acoss Tige Stadium and shock 78,000 howling fans by knocking off LSU in Baton Rouge. The Note Dame field hockey team was vey successful ove fall beak, winning all six of its games duing the week. Hee, Tei Muphy(ight)faces off in action ealie in the season as teammate Regina The Obseve /Vic Guaino Degnan ( 12) looks on. Kevin Hebet gives all the details of the action duing beak in his stoy below. Iish field hockey team wins six, takes Westen Illinois Tounament By KEVIN HERBERT Spots wite The Note Dame field hockey team continued Its winning ways by ecoding six victoies in six games ove fall beak. Goaltende Patti Gallaghe was outstanding in goal, ecoding five shutouts and yielding only one goal in the sixth game fo a combined goals-against-aveage of 0.16 in the games ove beak. The Iish began thei fall beak by thashing Westen Michigan by a scoe of 3-0. The game was neve eally in question as Note Dame dominated play, outshooting Westen Michigan, Next the Iish pounded Hope College by the same scoe, 3-0, while ecoding a shots-on-goal advantage of22-9. The Iish then moved on to play Valpaaiso. When asked what was the toughest game ove beak and why, Note Dame coach Jill Lindenfeld said "Valpaaiso was the toughest, not because they have a lot of talent - which they do not - but because of the conditions of the game. Still undefeated The field was in hoible condition, full of uts and bumps. The officiating was also pooly one sided." Lindenfeld also attibuted Valpaaiso's game style in the difficulty of the Iish victoy. "They played a tough, vey aggessive game thoughout," Lindenfeld said. "We play moe of a contolled game, but thei aggessiveness, combined with the bumps in the field, made ou passing game much moe difficult." Valpaaiso took the Iish into double ovetime when, with 30 seconds emaining, Molly McCabe became the heo fo the Iish by fiing the game-winne and giving Note Dame a 2-1 victoy. Note Dame next took its winning ways into the Westen lllinois Tounament. To come out victoious, howeve, the Iish had to pull out thee victoies, two ofthem by one goal. Note Dame opened the touney by playing the Univesity of Wisconsin. Gallaghe was outstanding in goal, tuning the Badges away at evey oppotunity. In the end the Iish wee able to come away with a had-eaned 1-0 victoy. "Of all ou victoies ove beak the win ove Southen Illinois was the most satisfying," Lindenfeld said. "They wee a highly anked team - highe in fact than some teams which we lost to, Akon fo example." Gallaghe was immpessive as usual in goal, ecoding he fouth shutout in five games as the Iish defeated Southen Illinois 1-0. Note Dame captued the Westen Illinois Tounament with yet anothe shutout by Gallaghe and a little moe ammunition by the offense, defeating Noth Dakota by a scoe of 3-0. The offense of the Iish ove fall beak was spaked by Melissa Somme, who notched six goals, Coinne DiGiacomo and Molly McCabe, who each added thee goals. "I am vey pleased with ou team's effots," Lindenfeld emaked. "Ou victoies wee a total team effot. We neve gave up." The Iish now will take thei ecod into the St.Louis Tounament this weekend. ND coss-county wins two meets By NICK SCHRANTZ Spots Wite The Note Dame coss-county team captued fist place in two lage and competitive meets ove fall beak to emain undefeated fo the yea. On Oct. 27 the Iish won the Midwesten City Confeence Meet held at the Butle Univesity Golf Couse. Note Dame totaled only 21 points (lowest scoe wins) to defeat Loyola and defending champion Oal Robets, which totaled 65 and 74 points, espectively. Senio Tim Cannon took the individual title with a time of 25:50 fo the 8,000-mete couse. Cannon's victoy makes up fo the disappointment he suffeed in last yea's confeence meet when he was not able to un because of an injuy. Senio co-captain Jim Tyle captued thid place oveall with a time of 26:08 and was diectly followed by feshman Dan Gaett in 26: II. Sophomoe Mike Collins placed sixth in 26:26 and senio cocaptain Bill Coutney had a seventhplace time of 26:27. Senio Ed Willenbink and junio john Magill finished out of the scoing fo the Iish, but each an well and kept seveal unnes fom othe teams fom placing highly. Willenbink took eighth place with a time of 26:28, while Magill finished in 12th place. Iish head coach Joe Piane said he was pleased with his team's pefomance. "We wee allowed to ente 11 of ou unnes, and all of them finished in the top 18," Piane said. "We could have not un ou top fou and still won the meet, which shows that we eally dominated. This was a good tune-up fo the NCAA Distict IV Qualifying Meet in two weeks." The Iish have been in the Midwesten City Confeence fo only thee yeas, but they have captued the confeence championship two of these yeas. They won in 1982 but finished second to Oal Robets last yea. Oal Robets, led by seveal foeign unnes, was expected to povide again a stong challenge to Note Dame, but the Iish poved how stong they ae this yea by easily winning the meet title. On Oct. 19 Note Dame soundly defeated seveal top teams to win the Indiana Intecollegiate Meet held at the Buke Memoial Golf Couse. The Iish amassed only 36 points to outdistance second-place Pudue, which totaled 48 points. Indiana captued thid place with 60 points. Tey Bahn of Indiana took the individual championship by finishing about 20 yads ahead of Cannon. Gaett captued fouth place and was diectly followed by teammate Coutney. Collins finished in tenth place, while Willenbink ounded out the Iish scoing with a 15thplace finish. Jim Tyle suged past seveal unnes in the stetch to finish in 18th see IRISH, page 11 The victoy was the best teat the Iish coach could have eceived this week. Fist of all, it should help keep some ghoulish membes of the media fom asking Faust the haunting question about etiement. Rumos about a possible successo fo Faust have been flying aound the campus like bats in a haunted house, but that talk was silenced in the wake of Satuday's upset. Secondly, it has quickly bought Iish fans back into Note Dame's cone. Fo one week, at least, the only boos Faust will hea will be fom tick-o-teates and not fom the masses of Note Dame fans. The same Note Dame fans who wee calling fo Faust's head a week ago ae now talking about which bowl game the Iish might be selected to visit. It's a simple display of how winning can make the bandwagon a little moe cowded. It seems as though the Iish have managed to solve the mysteious poblems which have haunted the team all season. lbe Iish dusted the cobwebs off the unning game, as Allen Pinkett an and an and an some moe on his way to 163 yads on 40 caies. The offensive line, which had been lagely ineffective ealy in the season, opened some gaping holes fo Pinkett to scampe though on Satuday. The Iish haven't used any witchcaft to fix the unning game, though. Instead, the Iish gound attack has benefited in the last two weeks fom the implementation of a single-back offense, which gives Faust an exta tight end to use fo blocking. Defenses which wee able to oveload against the un when Note Dame lined up in the!-fomation now havt> to play a little moe honestly, and it has opened up the ushing attack as well as the passing game. The balanced offense allowed the Iish to play ball-contol football, but some of the cedit must go to the Note Dame defense. The spiits of the team have definitely been lifted by the etun of senio linebacke Mike Lakin, who has pefomed quite well at the linebacke spot. While Lakin and Co. didn't exactly slam the doo on the LSU offense, they did manage to hold those Tiges. Now the question is, have all the gemlins and goblins that have played havoc with the Iish this yea in the fom of tunoves, penalties, and poo execution been scaed away, o was Satuday's pefomance meely a momentay exocism? The answe may develop this Satuday, as the Iish visit the Midshipmen of Navy. It has been 20 yeas since Navy has beaten the Iish, and fankly, it doesn't look like Gay Tanquill's team has a ghost of a chance this yea. The ginding unning game which gave Navy teams the nickname of the "Tanquillizes" has given way to the aeial attack eve since Heisman Tophy candidate Napoleon McCallum succumbed to an ankle injuy in the second game of the yea. The abilty to thow effectively has given the Middle offense the potential to be explosive, and the Iish cetainly must be way. Leading the offensive attack fo Navy is quateback Bill Byne, bothe of Note Dame's feshman quateback Tom Byne. Navy's Byne has isen fom sixth place on the depth chat at the beginning of the season to post some sensational numbes, including 1340 yads passing and 11 touchdowns. Last week, against Pitt, Byne thew fo 340 yads and helped Navy scoe two touchdowns in the last I :07 to tie the Panthes. Byne has a fightening goup of senio eceives who ae capable of making the big play. Tight end Mak Stevens leads all eceives with 25 catches, but split end Chis Weile and flanke Ken Heine follow closely with 24 eceptions each. Look fo Weile to be especially dangeous, as he has aleady accumulated 449 yads and thee TO's on his catches this yea. Defensively, the Middies have no monstes to combat the size of the Iish line, but they ae faily quick. Linebacke Mike Taylo leads the squad in stops with 62, while safety Mac Filie has 54 tackles and thee inteceptions to his cedit. Still, things look scay fo Navy on Satuday. The Iish took off thei ugly mask last week and put a smile on the face of Gey Faust and the Iish fans. Now they ente Giants Stadium, a place which has been a house of hoos fo Iish opponents since 1977, and the Middies must hope the Iish tun into pumpkins again. Hopefully, the team that gave Faust such a nice Halloween teat last week won't pull such a nasty tick this week. Pick of the Week... The weathe in South Bend has begun to tun bad, and that means Novembe is just aound the cone, and that means hockey. Lefty Smith's Iish lees etun as an NCAA Division I independent this season, opening thei new campaign this Fiday unde the noth dome of the ACC against Penn State. The Iish have a wealth of talent back fom a squad that posted a ledge as a club team a yea ago. Now the Iish ae hoping they can continue thei success on the vasity level this yea. The test begins Fiday with faceoff at 7:30.
