DEE WHY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Keeping you in the loop February-March 2015 #4 JUNIOR CLUB Message from Warren Hannam, Nipper Coordinator: Hi Everyone Well another nipper season is nearing an end after last Sunday s great turn out for our last official session! The SNB Branch carnival was held on Sunday February 22 nd and unfortunately the water areas were shut down after the all age relay, despite the under 8s finishing their wade due to large surf and dangerous rips. That left it up to all our beach competitors to shine and with new faces and long awaited older kids competing for the first time it wasn't long before we had the best results in years. See the full results and pictures! TRIP TO ORANGE We had another great success on our annual pilgrimage to Orange over the Australia Day long weekend. Despite date changes and a long weekend, numbers were well down year on year which was expected but those of us who went had a fantastic time. We were greeted with warm smiles, home made baking and new adventures, which ensured our kids had fun each and every day. Through the Orange Bush Nipper Age Managers and Royal Life Saving techniques our Dee Why Nippers and also a few parents learned some valuable new skills. Not even the 100 mm of rain we experienced dampened anyone's enthusiasm. We are looking forward to the Orange Bush Nippers return visit on 14-15 March and don t miss the trip to Orange next year!

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT CAMP WITH ORANGE BUSH NIPPERS This will be held at the end of the season on Saturday 14 th and Sunday 15 th March 2015 from 9am to 3pm on each day. A group from Orange will be coming down to take part in surfing, boards, body surfing and sand activities with our nippers. This is open to all nippers from U8s up. The cost will be $20 for the weekend for each nipper attending. There will also be a dinner on the Saturday night. There will be a charge for parents attending the dinner ($10-$15) but no charge for nippers. If you haven t already put your child s name down and want to attend please email Jenny at dyslsc.nippers@gmail.com asap and no later than this Wednesday (5.3.15). Nippers is not quite finished yet as there is still the State Championships this weekend in Umina for Under 9s and up so there is still more to report watch this space!! See you on the beach Warren Nipper Coordinator

Club Mad Mex Dinner Friday February 20 th Thank you to Mad Mex and everyone who attended the fabulous Mad Mex fundraising dinner at the surf club which was a raving success!! The food was amazing and fueled the kids even more to play on the beach and let their parents relax long enough to have a drink!! For those that were there it was a magical picture: Mad Mex showed up for the last day of nippers too happy to hang with the kids!!

Nipper Presentation save the date!! Saturday March 21 st at 3pm: Make sure you mark in your diary now so you don t miss the end of year Nipper Presentation on Saturday March 21 st at 3pm (followed by a dinner with details to follow). This will be upstairs in the club and is not to be missed! Volunteering and getting involved: Remember, everyone involved with Nippers is a volunteer and gives their time to assist in educating the kids and helping them to grow into clever surf lifesavers. Put your hand up in any capacity! Parents have so many ways to volunteer and set a great example for their kids and it starts with putting in the effort at weekly nipper sessions. Check out these great Under 6 parents who were happy to show their kids how flags should be done!! If you want to help even more and aren t sure how to get involved, just ask!! Email Jenny at dyslsc.nippers@gmail.com as a start as we re always trying to improve the nipper experience and share the load amongst more people! Nipper Insight Nipper Parent Bronze Donelle Fryer Donelle Fryer has 2 daughters and has been involved with nippers for a couple of seasons. Donelle says, After a season I realised it was important for me to be able to give back to the club and decided to do my Bronze Medallion! Getting her nipper parent Bronze was a real accomplishment and she encourages more parents to take the plunge and get qualified sooner than later. Don t wait until your children are older and almost finished nippers, as this really defeats the purpose - do it as soon as you can so you can assist throughout nippers with water safety. You ll be a wonderful role model to your child too and help them see what they can achieve. Recently Donelle s 13 year old daughter, Georgia, achieved her SRC so they are now on the same patrol and get to spend even more quality time together. They did their first patrol on Sunday finishing up with a crazy storm that cleared the beach! We ll be seeing these two on the beach for years to come!!

Big thanks to Marg Roberts for doing our entries and Geoff for towing the trailer up to Palm Beach, and Sue for the photos. Photos: During the course of the season numerous photos are taken by many different people. We would like to be able to use some of these photos when organising the Annual Report and other similar publications as well as on the website. If anyone has any objection to having their picture or their child/children s pictures appearing in publications or on the website could you please let me know by emailing secretary@dyslsc.org.au. Thank you! New Bronzies Another round of recruits have gotten through their Bronze Medallion and will be added to the patrol roster thanks again to instructors Matt Molinia and Dave Spink! Patrols Have you forgotten when your patrol is? Look up here http://www.dyslsc.org.au/wp-content/uploads/patrol-roster-and-teams-september-2014.pdf

Junior Lifesavers of the Year 2015 The junior lifesaver of the year (J.L.O.T.Y) program is run each year for the U14 members for their final year as nippers/ first year as SRC patrolling members. All the u14 members at Dee Why go through an interview process and come up with ideas about improvements that can be made in lifesaving and things that they would like to implement themselves. The JLOTY process gives the U14s an invaluable opportunity to participate in an interview process and to put together structured answers and ideas and put these forward to a panel. This season Reuben Sharma (back left in picture) and Charlotte Durban (back right in picture) were selected from a group of 20 to represent Dee Why against the other Sydney Northern Beaches Clubs. Reuben has come up through the ranks of nippers since u11s and is a great competitor as well as being a great mentor. Charlotte joined the club this year and her determination and bright and enthusiastic personality is exactly the attitude and determination that we wish to have our nippers strive for throughout their surf lifesaving careers. Competition is very tough and our candidates represented Dee Why with pride and distinction, congratulations to both of them, we hope that by their example we will continue to maintain the youth members of the club, our future lifesavers. Sun Herald Fun Run 31.1.15 The Sun Run was a great success and thank you to all the fantastic volunteers who assisted on the day!
