Panther Patter 2014 Issue Number: 2 A Weekly Bulletin for the Penshurst RSL Panthers JAFC Welcome back everyone to Olds Park! What a weekend we had, thanks to some weather we ended up with all our teams at home and a few extra games as well. Thank you to all that helped out and supported our club and all that helped in getting the club through one of the biggest Sundays for us this year. Penshurst Panthers is, as always, a true family club. Well done again to all teams. What a great morning with parents and committee helping me out setting up and arranging so that we were able to blow the horn to start proceedings on time. We had four games with all children having a ball and enjoying playing against a club that is steeped in tradition.

I would like to thank the older Penshurst panther s boys for blowing the whistle in some of the games and big thank you to the Cronulla coach who looked after the 6/7 years game. There were many parents and a great turn out of boys and girls, which for the first games on OLDS PARK and considering the looming weather was great to see, and experience as it was my first home game. I would like to wish all parents and children a HAPPY EASTER and see you on 27 April for our next game in the cauldron...olds PARK. Awards were given out for the canteen and may I pass on my appreciation to those parents who helped out in the canteen and the BBQ last weekend. Under 10 White VS Cronulla Blue at Olds Park Good game by all players 2

Under 10 Green VS Cronulla Black at Olds Park This first home game of the season was played in the sort of weather Sydney has become accustomed to recently. After a gutsy effort last week against Cronulla Blue, we were up against the other team from Gwawley, the Blacks. The first quarter started badly for the Panthers with much of the play down in the Sharks forward half. Thanks to some eagle-eyed parents, it was established that Cronulla had three more players on the ground, so once this was remedied the game was much more competitive. The heavens opened up in the second quarter, with the players from both teams having to chase around a rather large piece of red soap. Play was quite tight now, with occasional bursts out of packs from Penshurst. After the rain stopped at half time, the standard of play from the boys in green rose up a notch of two, being quite tight in the clutches and some outstanding end to end play. The match highlight came at the start of the fourth quarter, with terrific defensive pressure in our forward area resulting in Cronulla turnovers and some crafty goals. Some unlucky bounces of the ball prevented us scoring a few more. The first two games of the year have indicated that what we have here is a team of immense potential, and with some constant practice and more match experience can blend into a competitive little unit. Congrats to our match award winners Kyle, Braith and Casey, the goal line defence of Steven was outstanding with Harrison providing some grunt, Anthony some spark around the packs and the two Liams were fantastic. Enjoy the holidays, team see you back at Olds for the training on the 23 rd. Under 11s VS Bangor Tigers at Olds Park On an overcast drizzly, and breezy Sunday morning the Panthers took on the might of the Bangor Tigers without three of their stars in Tim, Bailey & Mitchell. Penshurst got off to a good start and had plenty of scoring opportunities with Murph converting on a couple of occasions. We were getting plenty of drive from Johnno, Edmund and Elliot in the centre, and using the ball well into the forward line. Wil put up a good one on one contest to save a goal. 1 st Quarter Penshurst to Bangor Penshurst continued to control the game in the second quarter with Jordan in the midfield linking with team mates with good handballing and Danny put his body on the line for the team. Penshurst were able to extend their lead and were well in control at half time. 2 nd Quarter Penshurst to Bangor The trend continued in the third quarter and Penshurst extended their lead with good work into forward line which set up numerous scoring opportunities. Jack was winning plenty of knocks in the ruck and Riley and Damien were driving the ball forward. 3rd Quarter Penshurst to Bangor 3

In the last quarter we played one player short and the Bangor Tigers made the most of their opportunities driving the ball forward and kicking goals. Fortunately Tyler was there to mop up plenty of their attacks. Andrew also got involved heavily and was able to man up on their player well. We seemed tire a little bit in the last quarter and may need to find more run and concentration when we tire. Final Score Penshurst 8.12 60 to Bangor 4.3 27 Thank you to Jarrad and Blake for helping us out today, and hoping to see them in some return efforts. All players contributed and should be proud of their efforts. Fantastic effort by all! Hope to see everyone at training on Wednesday at 5:30pm. Thank you to our Goal Umpire, Gavin and Mark were kept busy with Runner and Water Carrier duties greatly appreciated. Under 12s VS Newtown at Olds Park This was another game where we went into the unknown about our opponents and did we get a football lesson in team play today. Our boys were against a very strong breeze in this quarter where we put a lot of pressure on our opponents with our tackling, chasing & harassing. Matt M & Blake were holding the backline together with great defense and helping their teammates around them to hold Newtown to 9 points with the breeze. Qtr 2 Domenic C back from his hiatus started to dominate and start the panthers drive from the middle feeding Matt U who was gathering kicks around the ground. Chris S was marking everything coming his way also. Our teamwork in this quarter showed out where with good 4

passing and team play from Lach.S to Edmund who marked then kicked long to Luke M who marked and kicked our first goal. Qtr 3 against the wind again but the boys started well early with Josh O getting the loose ball forward, kicking to teammates quickly and Ryan L also getting important touches through the middle. But we couldn t hold Newtown this quarter where they slammed on a few goals. Qtr 4 We needed to get a few goals early but with undisciplined play and no teamwork that we know of told in the end. Newtown kicked away where they were too good for us on the day. We have to get back to where we know we can be with not worrying about things out of our control, attitude, teamwork and effort and I know the mighty Panthers will be back! Final scores: Newtown 7.12.54 def Penshurst 2.4.16 Under 13s VS Glebe at Olds Park A bad day at the office. This was a rather ugly and at times spiteful game which often resembled either rugby union or soccer. To be fair, Glebe did win the contested ball, read the game a little better and were stronger at positional play. As a result, we spent much of the game camped in our own half. The re-emergence of some coach-killers : a poor warm-up; s everyone running at or forward of the ball ( and then not running back); and kicking 5

turnovers from skill errors or just blazing away... and some new ones; far too much soccering - didn t help! On a more pleasing note, Mark s competitiveness again shone out in the Ruck. Samuel was good around the contest and executed some textbook tackles. Max M was safe and kicked the ball well from defence. Scott is picking up the game nicely and played on bravely after copping a nasty hit. There were also some good passages of ball use and movement. Thomas and Liam combined for a fine running goal in the last quarter. Josh W tried hard as always. The main take away from this result is to learn from it. Things don t always go your way. It is still early in the season and we have much scope for improvement as a team - so stay positive! Final Penshurst 5.1.31 Glebe 9.16.70 Under 14s VS Newtown at Olds Park Game two for the season saw the team up against a newcomer at least for us, Newtown. With their red and white tops it was the closest we d come to playing a team like the Swans. 6

The Under 14 team has remained similar for a couple of years now and that strength of bonding and knowledge of one another s games is showing. The team is emerging as a powerful unit. Within 5 minutes Zach Cameron had two goals and was exhibiting speed, strength and determination. Zach basked in his opportunity to attack and add to the score rather than coordinate our backline as he has done for several years. Our other bookend was the athletic Kyle whose running ability saw him score kicks all over the ground. Both players brought many others into the game. Our two Jacobs Merlino and Armstrong were superb, Tristan notched a couple of snapped goals, Josh Rosario ran hot in the goal square, Cool-hand Luke Cliff slotted a languid six pointer and before you knew it the game was packed away for us. Josh Higgs came down hard on his knee and we hope he makes a swift recovery his ruck work is looking brilliant. A couple of other special mentions though we could name pretty much the entire squad. How Davies pace around the packs, Andrew Stelzer s stylish movements, and Adam Goodacres strength and speed made it a hot team on a cold April day. The final score racked up at: Penshurst Panthers: 17-16-118 Newtown: 1-0-6 7

Under 15s VS Miranda at Olds Park Lost to our great rival Miranda 7-7-49 to 15-7-97 Under 17s VS Cronulla at Olds Park Another home game at Olds Park for Round 2 saw our U17 s squad meet up against our old rivals, Cronulla. It was a very tough battle, and our boys trailed a few points behind Cronulla at the first three breaks. Cronulla s inaccuracy at goals and our back line pressure during the second quarter helped our cause. Jonno s torpedo kick for goal in the 3 rd quarter was special. The final quarter saw Cronulla kick two quick goals putting huge scoreboard pressure on our team. Penshurst answered with four goals in a row to lead by 8 points. With two minutes left on the clock, Cronulla kicked another goal to be within two points. The remaining seconds of the game were a nail-bitter. To our relief, we heard the final siren sound in a win for our boys! Well done team! A good win to a close game. Q1 Penshurst 1-1-7 8

Cronulla 1-2-8 Q2 Penshurst 2-4-16 Cronulla 2-8-20 Q3 Penshurst 3-6-24 Cronulla 4-9-33 Full Time Penshurst 7-7-49 Cronulla 6-11-47 Goal Scorers to Ryan Mac, Jonno P (2), Luke P (3) and Lachy R.
