2017-18 Franklin Cheer Franklin High School Cheer Clinic-April 3-6, 3:30 pm-5:30 pm in small gym Cheer Tryout-April 7 th : Fr. @ 3:30, So. @ 4:30, Jr. @ 5:00, Sr. @ 5:30 Franklin High Choir Room Cheer clinics will run for four days and students are expected to attend and be on time each day. During clinics, students are allowed ONLY one absence, regardless of reason for absence. If you are in a spring sport, please talk to the advisor. Two tardies (or leaving early) are equivalent to one absence. Students who are absent from school are not allowed to attend clinics on that day. Any student with more than one absence may not try out. Students are to be dressed in clothing appropriate for physical activity (shorts, sweats, t-shirt and cheer or athletic shoes). Blue jeans and blue jean shorts are not allowed and anyone wearing them to the clinics, will not be able to participate. Franklin Dress Code will be strictly enforced. Do not come to clinics in midriffs, spaghetti strap shirts, or other revealing clothing. Arriving in inappropriate clothing will result in one absence, as the student will not be able to participate for that clinic day. All students must have at least a 2.0 GPA from Term 3 in order to tryout. All students who make the team will be required to maintain the 2.0 GPA for Term 4. Failure to do so, will result in student being benched at the beginning of the school year. Return the last page of rules and regulations, a copy of your term 3 report card, and the EGUSD Emergency form to the Cheer mailbox located in the main office by 3:30 pm on Friday, March 31st. (This is a deadline. No forms accepted on first day of clinic.) Parent Meeting mandatory for families who were not on the team during the 16-17 year. Attend one: March 28 @ 6-7 or April 6 @ 5:30-6:30 in Franklin High MP room. The clinic and tryout processes will be closed. There will be no spectators or visitors allowed in the gym during clinic times or actual tryouts. Judges, coaches, and FHS administration and staff may be present at tryouts. FHS CHEER TRYOUTS: JUDGING CRITERIA Appearance: Hair is pulled completely back off of face, no gum or jewelry Black sofee-style or Nike Pro-style shorts (not Spanx) white shirt, white cheer/athletic shoes Dance: Precision and unity with group- on the same count with other girls, timing Knowledge of the routine, On time with the music Arm/Leg motions- sharp, arms straight, good levels, punched out, energy Jumps/Kicks/Turns-toes pointed, good height, proper arm placement SMILING- cheerleader looks like she is having fun! Positive energy Cheer: KNOWLEDGE- knows motions and words PRECISION AND UNITY- Words on time with moves LEVELS- motions are sharp and arms are in the proper place VOICE- Clarity and volume EYE CONTACT- crowd involvement is encouraged and eye contact is made SMILING- cheerleader looks like she is having fun! The tryout score will be combined with the clinic score, staff recommendations, and grades to determine final squad placement.

FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL CHEER SQUAD Rules and Regulations FHS Cheer Squad MISSION STATEMENT: The Franklin High School cheer squad is an athletic team with the focus on providing school spirit, positive role models and support for ALL Franklin High School athletics and activities throughout the entire school year. I. GOALS AND BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS: A. To promote school spirit and pride B. To gain self confidence, responsibility and develop leadership skills C. To promote and initiate positive sportsmanship within and between schools D. To develop a sense of unity and teamwork E. To understand the responsibilities of a spirit leader at FHS: 1.At all times, set an example of school spirit, pride, integrity and dignity. Remember it is a privilege to represent your school 2.At all times, set an example of school leadership 3.At all times, maintain grades as required by the FHS student/athlete handbook. 4.At all times, maintain a respectful and positive attitude towards advisor, school administration, all cheerleaders, staff and students F. Attend ALL required sporting events and other events as designated by the advisor G. During all athletic events: (Football and basketball- including post season) 1.Arrive prepared to cheer at the designated time 2.Direct student body and adults in their support of the teams and school 3.Watch the game and keep aware of the progress of the event. Know what is happening during the game at all times. 4.Attention should be given to the game and proper crowd involvement and not to significant others (boyfriends, family, and friends) in the crowd and/or checking your cell phone. This includes during halftime and quarter breaks. 5.It is unacceptable for a spirit leader to sit out of cheer or any part of the game without approval from the cheer advisor. 6.While cheering for the game, appropriate behavior will be enforced. Personal discussions during the game or while cheering will not be tolerated. If the advisor needs to remind a spirit leader to stop talking, she may be removed from the game. 7.Wear only the appropriate uniforms with no modifications during the game unless prior approval has been given by the advisor (example: spirit week). The appropriate uniform must be worn to and from the game. 8.When wearing the appropriate uniform, no jewelry, or face paint is acceptable. Additionally, hair must be pulled all the way up and no gum will be allowed during the game. 9.While in attendance at sporting events as a spectator, continue to set an example of school spirit, pride, integrity and dignity. H. During Rallies:

1.Wear the appropriate uniform the entire day, even if its not a game day 2.Lead your class during class competitions 3.Be prepared to perform cheer or song routines when asked by the rally chair I. Develop communication skills. A successful season will be achieved if lines of communication and respect are kept open among the squad members, the advisor, the coaches, and parents. J. A positive attitude will be the only attitude accepted in the spirit environment. II. QUALIFICATIONS: A. The cheer team will follow the extra curricular and co-curricular activities, athletics, and eligibility for grades and behavior as outlined in the EGUSD Student-Athlete Handbook. B. The cheer team is recognized as an athletic team therefore each squad member must meet the requirements of all FHS athletes. 1. Each Cheerleader must have a Sports Physical (dated after May 1, 2017), an Athletic Permission Form, and Concussion Form turned in to Mr. Cody date TBA so she can receive an Athletic Clearance Card. C. During the school year, any cheerleader who becomes academically ineligible for two consecutive or a total of 3 grading periods will be removed from the Cheer Squad without a refund. III. EXPENSES: A. All qualified students will be afforded the opportunity to try-out for the cheer team. Final team selection will be based on criteria presented prior to try-outs. No student will be adversely affected if he/she is unable to meet the suggested financial standard. Any student who is unable to meet the standard should contact the cheer coach. B. Upon selection as an FHS Cheerleader, it is understood and agreed that a uniform is required and the expenses for the uniform will need to be paid to the uniform company at the deadline they establish. You will not be paying Franklin High School. 1.If any required item of the uniform is lost, misplaced, altered or damaged, a new item must be purchased. Depending upon the lost item, the spirit squad member may have to sit out until the item is replaced. 2. Any alteration to the uniform must be cleared in advance by the Cheer Coach. C. Uniform (Approximate Cost-$300. Skirt, Shell, Liner, and Briefs D. Uniform Options (Approximate Cost: $280): Shoes, Warm-Ups, Poms E. Selected Cheerleaders are encouraged to attend Cheer Camp during the summer. The cost for the Summer Cheer Camp will be $400. The cost for Camp Clothes will be approximately $250 which includes 2 camp outfits, 2 sports bras and black liner. (These items are needed by girls, even if they do not attend camp) Cheer camp costs will be paid directly to the Cheer camp at the deadline they establish. You will not be paying Franklin High School. Additional camps may be scheduled during the year and the Cheer program will off-set the costs through fundraising and donations. IV. FUNDRAISERS:

A. Fundraisers will be held to help defray some of the above expenses. B. All team members are required to participate in fundraising activities. V. ATTENDANCE: A. Spirit leaders must attend school for a minimum of 2 classes on the day of an event. The missed periods must be accompanied by an excused absence, cleared through the FHS attendance office. B. If an extra practice is necessary, the coach will give a 48 hour notice. Each cheerleader must then be at that practice or she will receive a consequence. C. A cheerleader is allowed up to (3) Unexcused Absences from practice during the cheer season. If a cheerleader has more than (3), a meeting will be scheduled with the Head Coach, Cheer Advisor, Cheerleader, and Parent(s). The Cheerleader may be removed from the squad. D. Absences cannot be used for mandatory events, games or practices, such as: o Homecoming practices o Rally practices o Practice prior to game day E. It is the duty of the cheerleader to notify the advisor in the event of any absences or tardies from an activity or an athletic competition. Prior approval must be given by the head coach in order to be excused from an event. F. Excused absences to practices or games will be for the following reasons only and will not count toward the (3) absences. o School sponsored events o Religious Events (With prior approval) o Family Emergencies o Illness with a Doctor s note VI. TRANSPORTATION: A. Transportation will not be provided by Franklin High School. All Cheerleaders must follow EGUSD policies and fill out the appropriate paperwork for driving to events and/or riding with the teammates parents. B. Students may not drive other team members to events. VII. BEHAVIOR CONSEQUENCES: Non-Compliance of ANY of the above rules and regulations may result in one of the following actions: Benched for part or all of a game Parent-advisor-squad member conference. Benched for two games. Contact of member, parents, and administrator AND removal from the squad. PRACTICE ATTENDANCE CONSEQUENCES 3 Tardies or more = Sit out 1 st quarter of the next game 1 Unexcused Absence = Sit out 1 st quarter of the next game

2 Unexcused Absences = Sit out 1 st quarter and half time of the next game 3 Unexcused Absences = Sit out 1 st -2 nd quarter and half time of the next game Failure to attend practices and events may result in removal from the team without a refund for purchased items. VIII. SAFETY Hair must be worn securely out of the face and fingernails must be kept short Shorts and sweatpants must be free of buttons, zippers, pockets and strings. Sweatshirts must be free of hoods, pockets, and drawstrings. Athletic shoes must be worn at all times. No jewelry may be worn at practice or at games. Band-aids or taping over piercings is not allowed. Girls who have new piercing will still be required to remove for all cheer-related events. I understand that I will be required to remove EVERY piercing during the daytime at camp. I understand that my coaches will do morning checks. I understand that if I do not abide by this rule, parents will be called to pick up cheerleader from camp with no refund. During any cheer function, I understand that I must remove jewelry that is exposed and can cause harm to any fellow cheerleaders during stunting. (at the discretion of the coach) If I choose to wear hidden jewelry, I do so at my own risk. If I choose to have acrylic nails, they must be kept at a length of no more than 2 mm (the width of a key) above the fingertip.
