Evans Junior High School Cheerleading Tryouts 2018-2019 A NOTE FROM THE COACH: I am happy to have you tryout for the EJHS Cheerleading Squad. This packet is put together to help you and your parents understand the commitment for cheerleading and expectations. All clinics, tryouts, and practices are closed. Be sure to be picked up by 8:00 pm each night during tryouts. All paperwork MUST be turned in before trying out. A physical is required for cheerleaders. (6 th graders will have one coming into Middle School). More information can be found at the EJHS Cheerleading website @ http://ejhscheerleading.weebly.com/. This will be applied to each individual cheerleader s account. Bloomington, IL 61704 EJHS gym EJHS gym/hall EJHS Cheer Web Site EJHS Computer Skills Room 2158 WHAT TO WEAR TO CLINICS/TRYOUTS: Candidates who tryout for the EJHS Cheerleading Squad will need to wear to each tryout date the following: black shorts, PE shirt (current EJHS students), white or grey t-shirt (future EJHS students), white socks, and cheer shoes. The t-shirt must be tucked in and not pulled back with a hair tie. The hair must be pulled in a high pony tail off shoulders, back, and face. There is to be no jewelry worn or gum chewing. JUDGING OF TRYOUTS: Tryouts will be judged by impartial judges. The following items will be considerations for judging: Floor Cheer (learned at clinic) Dance (learned at clinic) 2 Jumps---(1) toe-touch, (2) your choice of a jump learned at the clinic Tumbling Passes You will tumble on mats. There will be NO SPOTTING. Entrance--Facial Expressions & Voice Projection and Pronunciations Recommendations/Grade Sheet/Parent Permission o Recommendations must be completed and returned to Coach Twaddle by Friday, March 2, 2018 o One teacher recommendation must be from current CORE teacher, (5 th grade or a classroom teacher) and the other may be from a past or current teacher o Teacher recommendations maybe hand-delivered OR sent through Unit Mail to: Coach Twaddle at EJHS. No recommendations will be accepted from students directly by the coach o Grade Sheet--PARENTS: PLEASE PRINT OUT a current grade sheet for your child and send to Coach Twaddle. Grades are IMPORTANT! Good grades are essential for all athletes FUNDRAISING: All cheerleaders will participate in ALL fundraising events. We will learn about the fundraising requirements at the mandatory meeting. Fundraising will help reduce the out-of-pocket cost for each family and will also support cheer activities (good will towards teams, coach s camp, etc.) Fall/Spring Fundraiser goes towards personal funds or general cheer account (candle/cookie dough sales) Additional Fundraiser goes towards EJHS cheer account (Little Cheer/Dance Clinic, dine-in opportunities throughout the year, various TBD)

SUMMER CAMP: The UCA camp scheduled for July 2018 at ISU is being considered, as well as a less expensive option. Cheer camp is mandatory for all EJHS cheerleaders missing is not an option. Camp meals are an extra expense. PRACTICES: Seasonal practice during the school year are currently on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 pm to 5:00 pm in the cafeteria, gym, front hall or other designated location. Practices will be determined upon space availability. Summer practices are TBD. SUMMER TUMBLING/CHEER CLASS: Tumbling & Stunting Class is recommended for all cheerleaders during the summer. The class will be at Gym. Etc. during the day as to not conflict with other afternoon activities. The approximate cost is $50 a month for one hour a week class. Payments for items must be submitted in time for purchases. Lack of purchase for uniforms and/or other required items may suspend a cheerleader. Because some items are custom made, it is imperative that purchases are handle accordingly. Below is expected expenses, although there may be others to consider. All purchases and fees collected are nonrefundable. As an EJHS Cheerleader, you are a representative of your school whether you are in uniform or not. You will conduct yourself in a respectable and responsible manner at all times, on or off the court. All cheerleaders will be respectful towards teachers, coaches, parents, students at EJHS and other schools, and towards EACH OTHER!!! This requires commitment and hard work. As a cheerleader your purpose is to promote school spirit and support the athletic programs at EJHS, whether in victory or defeat. Cheerleading is an honor! Be proud!!! Uniform 1. Uniforms must be kept clean at all times. 2. Uniforms are to be washed on DELICATE cycle and laid flat to dry. 3. Cheer shoes are considered part of the uniform and are to be worn indoors only at practices and games. They are not outdoor shoes. Do not wear your cheer shoes in inclement weather. Shoes must be in your bag. 4. Black athletic pants or game pants are to be wore in cooler weather at school or to a venue. Attire 1. Hair must be pulled back into a high ponytail and must be off your shoulders secured with your cheer bow. No hair is to be in your face, this includes bangs. 2. Nails must be shorter than the top of the fingertips. Clear nail polish is the only color acceptable for nails during the cheer season. 3. No jewelry may be worn at any time while at practice, at a game, or any time you are in uniform. Jewelry cannot be taped. The IESA states that the definition of jewelry is anything that was not on or in your body when you were born. If you choose to get your ears pierced during the cheer season, you will have to take out your new piercings during all practices and games. Attendance 1. All cheerleaders are expected to be in attendance for all practices and games. 2. If you are not in attendance any part of the school day, you cannot practice or cheer at the game that day. You will still come to practice or game. The only exceptions are excused as by the coach or cheer policy.

3. All appointments should be scheduled around practices and games. This includes the time between school and the start of the game because we use this time to practice. 4. Game schedules will come out in the summer. 5. Missing Practices: a. If you are at school, you come to practice. b. If a practice is considered unexcused, the cheerleader will dress but NOT cheer during a game. c. If you miss a practice you will be missing out on the new material we are learning. Your position may be replaced by another member of the squad. It is very important to be at all practices to learn and do as much as possible as a squad. Excused Absences 1. School-sponsored activities 2. Death in the family 3. Other exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Coach. Eligibility 1. Cheerleaders are expected to maintain grades of C or better or (1.75 on standards-based grading), even though this may differ from the school s athletic general policy. 2. School work comes first. If a cheerleader s name appears on the ineligibility list throughout the cheer season (August-February), the cheerleader will be notified each time the cheerleader is on the ineligibility list. 3. The cheerleader is expected to communicate the ineligibility to parents/guardians. 4. Cheerleaders who are ineligible will be required attend practice, but study at school during practice time. They will also attend all games in uniform and sit on the bench. Permanent Suspension 1. Total of 3 unexcused absences. 2. Not meeting the requirements of the Coach/cheerleader/parent/guardian agreed-upon plan about eligibility 3 weeks on the ineligible list (traditional grades of D or F or 1.75 on SBG) results in removal from the squad. 3. Repeated school disciplinary problems. (No detentions, suspensions, etc.) 4. Constant disruption and/or attitude problems. (Results in teachers e-mail to the coach about behavior) 5. Multiple rule infractions (Coach s or school s) 6. Parents not fulfilling responsibilities (late pick-ups, unpaid accounts, etc.) Dual Participation 1. Every effort will be made to ensure that the student has every opportunity to successfully participate in dual activities without compromising the integrity of either activity. (Evans students may participate in cheerleading and any IESA sport other than basketball due to conflicting seasons). Communication with both Coaches is the key. General Rules 1. Good communication is the key to preventing mix-ups. It is your responsibility to get information. Please notify the coach if you have questions. 2. None of the following will be tolerated. Failure to follow rules will result in the cheerleader sitting out part/all of a game. All rule infractions are at the discretion of the Coach. a. Not paying attention to information given from the Coach b. Tardiness to practice, games, and game expectations (greeting players, back after half-time, etc.) c. No spirit, pep, enthusiasm at practice or games d. Missing uniform pieces (if the cheerleader is missing any part of their uniform, including shoes, bows, etc., the cheerleader will not cheer until they have what they are missing) e. The uniform is not neat and clean f. Talking to other cheerleaders/fans while cheering g. Returning late after half-time h. Swearing and any disrespectful behavior i. Arguments among squad members or with the Coach j. Missing any cheer-function (without prior excusal from the Coach) k. Not sitting in a group during cheer-related functions or not sitting with the Coach when not cheering l. Use of cell phone at practice or games without permission from the Coach EJHS Cheerleading Constitution-The EJHS Cheerleading constitution governs the program. Evans Junior High School Cheerleading Captain Application We will have at least two captains for the Cheerleading season. If you are interested in being considered for a captain position please complete this application and return it to Coach Twaddle by Friday, March 2, 2018 by 3:00 pm. Completed applications must be submitted to Coach Twaddle (twaddlet@myunit5.org). Captain application must be completed to be considered for a captain position. Submission of a Captain Application does not guarantee a s pot as a captain; rather it guarantees your consideration for that position. Expectations for Captains: Be a liaison between Cheerleaders and Coach during the season Demonstrate leadership both on and off the court/mat Be the first one to come and the last one to leave at practices, games and events Help delegate/coordinate spirit raising, fundraising and team bonding Help to foster an environment of growth and encouragement among the team Work with the team individually and as a whole, recognizing that each individual member is a vital part of our team and helping them to learn and be the best they can be Work cohesively and supportively with the other captain and the coaches Others as needed Thank you for your desire to be a captain.
