FISH BITES MIAMI MARLINS (30-40) RHP David Phelps (4-3, 3.96) at CINCINNATI REDS (31-36) RHP Michael Lorenzen (2-2, 3.70) GREAT AMERICAN BALL PARK, CINCINNATI, OH Sunday, June 21, 2015 1:10 P.M. The Marlins and the Reds conclude their three-game series at Great American Ball Park, site of the 2015 All-Star Game, today at 1:10 p.m. RHP David Phelps (4-3, 3.96) gets the call for Miami on Father s Day; he is 1-0, 2.16 in two games, one start vs. the Reds. The Reds counter with right-hander Michael Lorenzen (2-2, 3.70), who is facing the Marlins for the first time. Miami, 1-3 on this trip after two losses at Yankee Stadium and a split so far in this series, entered this road trip off a 5-1 homestand against Colorado (3-1) and the Yankees (2-0). Following this series and an off-day tomorrow, the Marlins return home for a 10-game homestand against St. Louis (June 23-25), Los Angeles-NL (June 26-28) and San Francisco (June 30-July 2). VS. THE REDS The Marlins are just 4-10 in their last 14 meetings with the Reds, but the four wins have come in the last seven games. Miami is 36-56 all-time in the Queen City (17-24 at Great American Ball Park), and Cincinnati leads the all-time series, 102-74. UP NEXT The Fish return to Miami to take on the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time this season. The Marlins were 4-2 vs. the Cardinals last season, 2-1 at Marlins Park, and have won four of their last five against the Redbirds. The Marlins are 68-98 all-time vs. the Cardinals, 32-50 at home (5-5 at Marlins Park). LAST NIGHT Miami defeated the Reds, 5-0, at Great American Ball Park, their first shutout here since Aug. 7, 2005. Justin Nicolino earned the win in his ML debut, as he did not allow a run in seven innings to become the first Marlins starter to go 7+ innings with no runs in his ML debut. Derek Dietrich had his first career multi-home run game, going 2x2 with two home runs, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and three RBI. J.T. Realmuto had a two-out, RBI-double in the third inning, as Miami took a 3-0 lead in the third. The Fish added two more in the seventh on Dietrich s second homer, and the bullpen worked the final two shutout innings. CAUGHT LOOKING With the nine shutout innings behind the dish last night, J.T. Realmuto improved his catcher-era to 3.62 (175 ER in 435.2 innings). The 3.62 catcher-era would rank as the best-ever by a Marlins rookie catcher; Charles Johnson currently holds the mark with a 4.40 catcher-era in 1995. The last rookie catcher in the Majors to finish a season with a lower catcher- ERA was Javy Lopez of the Braves in 1994 (3.20). FIRST THINGS FIRST Justin Nicolino became the 10 th Marlins pitcher, and just the second lefty, to start and win his ML debut last night. The last was Nicolino s opponent yesterday, Anthony DeSclafani, who got the win in his debut on May 14 last season, 13-3 at the Dodgers. The others are: A.J. Burnett (1999), Brad Penny (2000), Jason Grilli (2000), Josh Beckett (2001), Scott Olsen (2005), Anibal Sanchez (2006), Ryan Tucker (2008) & Adalberto Mendez (2010). Olsen is the only left-handed pitcher of the group. NO JUNE SWOON HERE Giancarlo Stanton hit his 10 th home run of June Thursday night at Yankee Stadium, tying him with Hanley Ramirez (2008) for the most home runs in June in Club history. With 10 games remaining in the month, Stanton is just two homers shy of tying his own Club record for home runs in any month, which is 12 (May of 2012). He leads the Majors in home runs this month. The most home runs hit in a single month this season was 13, by Bryce Harper in May. ELIAS SAYS... Giancarlo Stanton hit his Major League leading 25 th home run of the season in his 67 th game on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium, demolishing the Club record for fewest games played to the quarter-century mark, formerly held by Mike Lowell (2003) and Gary Sheffield (1996), who had done it in 82 games. According to Elias, the fastest Marlins player to 26 home runs was Mike Lowell, who did it in 85 games in 2003. He is just the fourth player in the last 10 years to reach 25 home runs this fast, joining Albert Pujols (49 in 2006), Alex Rodriguez (63 in 2007), and Jose Abreu (67 in 2014). Additionally, Stanton leads the Majors with 63 RBI, and has nine games to break the Club record for fewest games played to 70 RBI, which is currently held by Cliff Floyd (79 in 2001). - Elias ICHIRO S ROAD SHOW Ichiro Suzuki with two pinch hit appearances in this series, has his first-ever appearances in Great American Ball Park. It is the 40 th different stadium that he has played a regular season ML game in. Ichiro entered this season having never played in a regular season ML game in four ballparks: Marlins Park, AT&T Park, Citizens Bank Park and Great American Ball Park. Ichiro did play in Cincinnati in 2002, playing three games at Cinergy Field. FIRST-HALF MARKS IN PERIL With 19 games remaining before the All-Star break, Giancarlo Stanton has 25 home runs and 63 RBI. The Club record for home runs prior to the break is 28, by Mike Lowell in 2003, followed by Gary Sheffield (1996) and Stanton with 25, and Hanley Ramirez (2008) & Dan Uggla (2008), with 23 each. The record for RBI is 76, also by Lowell in 2003, with several players currently standing between Stanton and that mark. Also, Dee Gordon has 101 hits on the season; the Club record for the first half is 117, by Juan Pierre (2003) and Ramirez (2007).
