CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA Hickory Chapter - American Singles Golf Association September 2010 Fellow Golfers... It has been a long hot summer. We have dealt with vacations, minor injuries, sweltering heat and pouring rain. Nevertheless, we have persevered, played on, and kept true to the slogan... Fun, Fairways and Fellowship. None of this would be possible without the members who have sponsored golf outings, and the golf committee, who has the responsibility of running all of the 9&Dines. We have a great group, and I want to encourage all of you to think about inviting someone new to the next meeting or social. Let's see how many new faces we can have join us. Most people don't join because they were never asked. Next outing, give some thought to that potential new member. See you on the course. ~Brenda Haupt Board Meeting-August 4 The Board met Wednesday at Crown Plaza/Round Wheels Lounge located on LR Blvd., at 6:00 pm. President, Jim Brinkley presided over the meeting, attended by Bill L., Gary, Will, Sarah, Dana and Charlene. A nominating committee was appointed by Jim- chaired by Harry- with Will and Gary assisting. The new president is to be elected in October, followed by new officers to be elected in November. The location and entertainment aspect of this year's Christmas party was discussed, with several members checking on possible sights. The Club Championship, which will be held at River Crest this year, was also a topic of discussion. Other issues reported on were included at the General Meeting. He also discussed the need for a temporary Membership Chair to fill in for Carol, who had to step down due to health reasons, and reminded members of the October 15, golf event being held at Lake Lure. The meeting was turned over to the following committees: Secretary- Claudetta's August minutes were approved as read. Treasurer- Dana sent in the balance of $1,043.00 (less $131.00), paid to Bill for postcards and postage. Social Chair-Sarah reported on many events taking place in our area that would be of interest, also netting our club $51.00 selling raffle tickets. Mary Suddreth, one of our favorite waitresses at the Oyster Bar, won the other $51.00. Sarah, along with her friend Ken, is diligent at this job and is recognized and appreciated by all of our members. Golf Quote of the Month "A rough should have high grass. When you go bowling they don't give you anything for landing in the gutter, do they?" ~Lee Trevino Jim Flick On Golf The ability to play golf is based on repeatable, simple, and good habits formed by the proper use of the club to make the ball go to the target. Going through a complicated thought process while you're standing over your ball just doesn't work. The more you concentrate when you're on the playing ground, the worse you're likely to play because your mind is going to be giving orders that interfere with your body's freedom to respond instinctively as an athlete. Concentrate when you're on the Training Ground-the practice range-because there you are working on your game, on the course-the Playing Ground- you should trust your habits and your feel and your athletic instincts. Pool Party/Cook Out August 21 Our president, Jim, along with the best chef ever, Richard, hosted a cook-out for ASGA members and their friends. The setting was Jim's home, atop a picturesque mountain in Valdese. Fifteen members and three guests attended the party. Everyone brought side dishes, and Richard grilled mouth watering ribs and chicken. Guess what? Not long after arriving a light drizzle sent the group seeking shelter. Anticipating bad weather, a table and music was set up in the garage. After eating, Jim entertained, at our insistence, at his baby grand piano, playing pop and classical music. Wonderful!... Jeff and his guest, Brenda T., took advantage of the hot tub. The party continued around the dining table, playing the dice game, RCL. Libby introduced us to this fun, fast-paced game. The raucous group tried not to begrudge the winners, Terry and Libby, who outlasted everyone, taking all the money. Rain did not dampen our spirits! Thank you, Jim for hosting, and Richard for cooking. Tall Tales Jim and Girls- Pool Party 2010

CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION SEPTEMBER 2010 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, we ll return to the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up some great courses nearby (Meadowland Golf Course and Farmstead Golf Links) and have arranged for 10:30am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. In addition, there is optional day-of-arrival golf at Burning Ridge and dayof-departure golf at Arcadian Shores. Date: November 11-14. Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf, enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and a Friday night cookout. In addition, if you purchased one of our packages and attended this event last year, you ll have a $25 loyalty credit working in your favor! So to get all the details on this fun-filled event, visit the website at SinglesGolf.com/BattleAtTheBeach or complete the registration form enclosed with your monthly newsletter. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at 704-889-4600. New Year s Location To Be Announced Later this month, we ll announce the location for our New Year s event. A recent poll was made asking members to give us input for a location. Results: 52% wanted to support the folks in the Florida panhandle (i.e. Panama City with Gulf Shores / Sandestin suggested), 28 percent wanted Daytona and the the final 20% went to returning to Orlando. Other suggestions were south Florida (Naples area), Sarasota, New Orleans, and a few other southern cities. ASGA looks at a number of elements in putting together a New Year s event such as nearby airport, available courses, weather, hotel accommodations and proximity to where the attendees come from. If we can have it in a location where 50-60 percent of the attendees can drive to the event, we ll have a much larger turnout than if it s a location where 90% of the attendees would have to fly. Stay tuned! Denver ASGA Up and Running Congratulations to Dawn Lindsay and all the volunteers who ve helped put Denver ASGA on the map. The new chapter hit 45 new members in no time flat. Denver s a great golfing area, plus you have the extra benefit of your ball flying an additional 100 yards! Thank you, Dawn, for your efforts. We hope ASGA has a positive impact on many lives in the Denver area. We re Starting New Chapters The national office is on a mission to start new chapters anywhere there s a need - - and golf courses. We re working on New Haven, CT, St. Louis, MO, Columbus, OH and Buffalo, NY, Virginia Beach, VA, Omaha, NE, Des Moines, IA, Springfield, IL, Boise, ID, Portland, OR, Pittsburgh, PA, Boston, MA, Harrisburg, PA, Davenport, IA, Wichita, KS and Salt Lake City, UT. We ve set-up a full section on our website dedicated to starting a new chapter: SinglesGolf.com/start If you have friends, colleagues, relatives, etc. in a distant city and think they d be an ideal candidate for getting a new ASGA chapter started, please have them contact us. - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
