END OF SEASON BUS TRIP On Tuesday 25 March we embarked on our end-of-season bus trip "Around the Bay in a Day". Leaving the club at 8am, we travelled to Geelong for morning tea enjoying home made goodies from Vicki Lamble, our tour director. We then re-boarded the bus and picked up a local historian and tour guide who gave us a lot of information about Queenscliff in a tour around the township. Lunch was served at the Queenscliff Bowling Club before a bit of a shop in the main street and then a trip across the bay on the Queenscliff/Sorrento ferry. A drive up Eastlink Freeway and back to the club made for a very pleasant day for 42 of our members. Many thanks to Vicki and Lamble Tours for the excellent way in which they conduct their trips. Vicki will be back with us on Presentation day (17 May) to present the Mixed Club Champs prize. SPONSORS DAY Sunday 23 March we held an afternoon of Barefoot Bowls for our sponsors. George Heinink put a lot of work into organizing this day and all of our sponsors received a drink voucher and an invitation to join us for the afternoon. Sadly the response was light on, although the sponsors who did come had a bit of fun on the greens and we enjoyed a social Sunday afternoon with them. We would like to thank Tony Smith for dropping in to say hello, Tracey from Hearsmart and her husband and kids, and Leanne, John and Kevin from the Bendigo Bank. Our own Tony Higgins even got on the green for a bit of a bowl and from what we could see has a bit of a knack. The boys from Heritage Holden also put in a late appearance. SO EVIDENTLY WE VE LEARNT BUGGER ALL OVER THE PAST 2,068 YEARS! "The Budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest Rome will become bankrupt. People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance." - Cicero, 55 BC! PAGE 2
HOLDING 5 - I NEED ONE HERE Above Karen and David Morgan s young grandson has a day out on the greens and looks like he has it a" under control. LBC CREATES CLUB HISTORY 5 and 4 played each other in a home sectional final. The two sides played the season in the same division, finishing first and second. On semifinal day they played side by side and both teams were victorious. An approach was made to the pennant department of Bowls Vic by the chairperson of selectors for midweek pennant and permission was given to play the final at Bowling Club rather than at Darebin as required by the draw. This was an historic occasion for both the club and for BowlsVIc. 5 won the game and became sectional final winners, then went on to be defeated by City of Melbourne who went on to become the divisional final winners. It was a great effort by both 5 and 4. The midweek pennant teams performed really well during the season with 2,3,4,and 5 making the finals...a good result for the club and for the midweek teams. COACHES NEEDED You can enter the Coach accreditation pathway at either Introductory Coach of Club Coach. Each level is supported by a manual with all the information you need to coach players in your environment. Introductory Coach is ideally suited to coaches working with schools, social bowlers and those introducing new bowlers to the game. Grant de Nijs particularly needs your assistance in this area. Club Coach accreditation is suited to coaches regularly working at club level, either coaching a team or individual. Coaching courses are due to start in April 2014. Please see Grant de Nijs or Ian Conley if you are interested in becoming a coach and the club will submit and pay for your course. An Application form is attached to the Newsletter. An Extract from The Shot magazine from Lachlan Tighe: Coaching is vital in it s provision of a skills service to gain, then maintain, those who join our sport. Coaching is imperative in the skill development for every bowler; however it is of extra value to those players wishing to aspire to higher levels of sporting performance. Ensuring coaches are kept abreast of contemporary developments, to meet both these points, becomes a requirement of the formal bowls associations, such as Bowls Vic. That requirement is partially addressed by the provision of ongoing workshops, support services and website updates to enable any coach to tap these resources to use as they guide and assist the players in their immediate locality. If bowls association management was to look at what other profile sports do, they would come across the phrase...athlete focus, coach driven...to show how all sport sees the contribution and importance of the coaches to the membership. Lachlan s new book Winning BecomesYou introduces you to a modern successful approach to Lawn Bowls; challenging old practices and providing information, guidance and training routines suited to your being a better bowler or coach.
