Spruce Run Runaround Results Force 5 and Jet-14 News Wednesday Sunfish Fleet Report Flying Scot Fleet Report Sunday Sunfish Fleet Report Junior Sailing Team News June Calendar of Events Upcoming Events Der A good turnout for the Memorial Day Regatta resulted in extremely competitive racing and a true test of skill! The wind was shifty at best with raging gusts of up to 5 miles per hour. At one point for about 5 seconds a couple of people were seen hiking, well, really, they were just leaning out of their boat. 1st Place Winner Steve Manson 6/4 & 6/5 Force 5 Spring Spectacular 6/11 Commodore s Cup 6/14 Sailing Lecture 6/25 Race Clinic The conditions were ably handled by the race committee of Doug Brown, Evan Franks and Art Mohan, who did a great job in the light air. Windward-leeward gate courses were run and 9 races were completed. Top honors went to: Steve Manson in 1st place, Simon Bertocci in 2nd and Alec Manson in 3rd. 1st place Junior went to Andrew Stockwell. 3rd Place Winner Alec Manson

J u n e 2 0 1 1 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 2 HSC Race Clinic On June 25 th HSC is holding a Race Clinic for members interested in improving their skills on the race course. The day will combine lectures and on-the-water drills for both single and double-handed boats. Please come prepared to sail your boat. The day will start at 9:00a with about an hour of lecture followed by on-the-water drills. We will return for another series of lectures over lunch, followed by more drills and a final wrap-up. Topics include: sail trim single and double-handed boats, strategy/tactics, and improving boat speed. Strategy and tactics will be addressed by several instructors so that various theories can be shared. Instructors include: Bill Foster, Guido Bertocci, Doug Brown and Steve Manson. Sailing Lecture Location: Old Stone House On June 14 th at 6:00pm sail training will begin with an introductory lecture on the basics of the club and fleets and on the water safety. Please attend if you are enrolled in any of the Learn-to-Sail classes. The lecture will be held at the Old Stone House at Spruce Run. This is the first right after the administration entrance as you enter the park. 43 rd Annual Commodore s Cup On Saturday, June 11 th HSC will hold the annual Commodore s Cup regatta. The Commodore s Cup has been sailed since 1969, and is open to all fleets at HSC. All fleets will start at the same time, and races will be scored using the Portsmouth Handicap System. Last year Rich Baumann took home the Commodore s Cup for the second time, unseating five-time (wow!) Commodore Cup winner Charlie Engler. Who will be this year s outstanding skipper??? In keeping with Club tradition, Commodore Wheeler will be leading the Race Committee. Skipper s Meeting at 11:00am First Race at 12:00 noon

J u n e 2 0 1 1 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 3 2 nd Annual Spruce Run Runaround & Picnic More than 30 new members and HSC veteran sailors turned out for the 2 nd Annual Spruce Run Runaround and Picnic, which was held on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. With most of the new members packed aboard the four Flying Scots and a Phantom, the fleet was rounded out with a Jet 14 and Sunfish. The sailing part of the Spruce Run Runaround was essentially an on-the-water scavenger hunt with sailors earning points for checking off a list of destinations and buoys labeled with the names of exotic cruising locales. With good wind for the day, most boats navigated their way out to the power lines and around Goose Island covering an estimated 5 to 6 miles. As each of the boats passed the committee boat, anchored off campgrounds point, they were challenged to demonstrate their man overboard rescue skills having to recover a football thrown in their wake. Their nautical quarterback skills were then demonstrated by throwing the football into a bucket on the See Which Won, which is not as easy as it sounds. On their way back to HSC, sailors were challenge to show their ability to sail backwards, which was clearly easier for the Phantom and Sunfish sailors than the Flying Scots. After two hours on the water, the HSC grill was soon sizzling with steaks and hamburgers, and there were lots of tasty pot-luck dishes bought by the participants. Poker hands were dealt based on scavenger hunt scores, and Commodore Mike Wheeler drew 4 kings to take First Place. Other Awards bestowed upon the participants included: The Retrograde Award for Backwards Sailing Technical Merit was awarded to Michael Hopkins with his mom Carmen as crew for backing up his Phantom for about 100 yards and making it look easy! The Backwards Sailing Award -- Artistic Merit was a tie between the Scot sailed by John Thomas, Mike Wheeler, Cathy Rosswagg, and Cath Shannon, and another Scot sailed by Chet Ensign, Tenley Crodin and her daughters Jenny and Allie. Nobody takes the man overboard drill more seriously than sometimes deep-water sailor Gary Nackman, with crew Alice Storfer, BJ Rego, and Gail Scales. The Halyard Trophy for Nautical Quarterbacking went to Alice Storfer. The Doctor Crash Award for Nautical Gymnastics went to prospective Scot sailor Adam Tavolaro whose enthusiasm for the man overboard drill led to his own speedy rescue by Scot skipper Dave Petersen and Ramon Rosswaag. The Gilligan Award for Navigation went to Charlie Engler and crew Jan Bailey because they beat the RC boat to the MOB contest and missed the event. Finally, the Ellen MacArthur Trophy went to Ellen Greenhorn (pictured above) for single-handing her Sunfish to all points on the course! The event Chairmen were Ted Janulis and Gordon Sell, with RC Assistance provided by Mike Schott, Ian Gilmore, and Rylie the Wonderdog.

Participants have included Jay Halstead, Mario Gedzior (of the Scot fleet), new member Tammy Beltle, Ted Janulis and me. That leaves about 15 Force 5 owners that have not been out with us yet. I plan to be there for every Sunday in the Spring Series except June 19. Hope to fill the line every week! Good wind and warmer weather every week is bringing out more and more people. Sunday afternoon fleet racing also has a great turnout. J u n e 2 0 1 1 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 6 Flying Scot Fleet # 184 The Flying Scot Fleet hosted the Nockamixon Sail Club on May 22 nd for the first half of the Challenge of the Lakes series. 7 Flying Scots from HSC competed, plus several Scots from NSC! The HSC Scots will travel to Lake Nockamixon on August 28 th for the second half of the series! Memorial Day Weekend also had a fantastic showing from the Fleet, starting with Gary, Gordon, Chet, JT and Dave P. participating in the Runaround. The weekend ended with 6 Flying Scots racing on Sunday and 2 more Scot skippers on RC duty!!! Looking forward to seeing lots of Scots on the line as the summer approaches! J u n e 2 0 1 1 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 7 Sunfish Fleet - Sunday Series On Sunday May 8, 2011 a brave group of sailors came out for the second day of races in the Sunday Series. Commodore Mike Wheeler, Susan Mallows, Ray Buchanan, Nick Mentesana, Ellen Greenhorn, Doug Brown, and Sunday Fleet Captain Pia Lord showed up despite or in spite (no one really knows) of the fact that it was Mother s Day. Nicky Einthoven and the Race Committee Crew did a great job starting races, setting up courses and even performing a rescue! There were three races starting around 1:30pm and finishing around 4-4:30pm. In the first race, Susan Mallows took 1 st with five boats starting and four finishing. Nick Mentesana came in 2 nd place and Commodore Mike Wheeler took 3 rd. Ray Buchanan apparently slipped off the side of his Sunfish, capsized his boat, was rescued by the able Race Committee and Crew and brought ashore safely and unharmed. The second race had five boats starting. Doug Brown took 1 st ; Susan Mallows took 2 nd, with Mike Wheeler 3 rd. Ellen Greenhorn and Nick Mentesana, came in 4 th and 5 th respectively. Doug Brown won the third race, followed by Mike Wheeler in 2 nd, Susan Mallows in 3 rd, and Pia Lord in 4 th place. Races start throughout the afternoon so if you miss the first start you can still come out and catch the later races. Thank you to all who came out to race and watch! Best, Pia Lord Sunday Sunfish Fleet Captain SundaySunfishFC@SailHSC.org HSC Junior Sailing Team News The Junior Sailing Team will start on July 6 th and run every Wednesday until August 24 th. Practice will run from 2:00 to 5:00pm. Sailors are encouraged to stay and sail at 6:00pm in the Twilight series and then to come out for pizza at the Sunset Inn after sailing. The Junior table at the Sunset Inn is growing every year! The team is open to all HSC sailors under the age of 19 who can sail a boat upwind. This year the Jr. Sailing Team will be coached by Doug Brown. Doug is the Head Sailing Coach at Drexel University. Whether you want to get better at sailboat racing or prepare for a major regatta come out and sail with us. If you are planning to sail with the Team this summer or have questions email Coach Doug Brown at DRXSailcoach@aol.com. In your email let me know: 1. What you want to get better at this summer? 2. Are you sailing in off lake regattas this summer? 3. Are you sailing in a Major regatta, where, where and in what type of boat? 4. Would you like to sail when you go to college?

J u n e 2 0 1 1 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 9 HSC Park Liaison Report A couple of weeks ago, one of our members was questioned by a park police officer while working on his boat at about 7:30 pm. On hearing of this, I visited with the Park Superintendent and Sgt. Napoleon to discuss the rules. I was advised that the park technically closes at 7:00 pm and that park police have been paying closer attention to the boat storage area following our reports of stolen trailers and beach dollies. After some discussion, they agreed that anyone who has rented boat parking space is entitled to rig, launch or work on their boat after closing, but should be prepared to show their parking pass and evidence of ownership of the boat they re working on. If you are questioned, I suggest prompt display of your documents and a thank you for their diligence in protecting our property!
