Kyoto City Comprehensive Transportation Strategy for Kyoto, Enjoyed by Walking (adopted in Jan. 2010) BASIC IDEA VISION to change over the town and lifestyle centered cars into the ones with preference given to walking to remain a city creating liveliness as well as an international tourist and cultural city To build a model city of sustainable and non-car-centric society, the city drives for Kyoto, enjoyed by walking through the followings; 1creating a user-friendly public transportation at the world s top level 2town making with great charms of walking 3each person loves his/her lifestyle with walking 88 projects are steadily urged in cooperation with citizens and businesses under the common idea of the strategy 5

Improvement of Public Transport Availability to reform the city bus business in financial self-sufficiency to increase the passengers and the profitability through the availability improvement to re-invest the increased return in the reform expansion of regular interval operation such as 5 minutes, service increase of the sightseeing routes, user promotion through mobility management etc. Passengers:increased 5 million people/year in recent 7 years Profits:FY2000 5.2 billion yen to the red FY2012 2.6 billion yen to the good 764 City buses on74 routes run about 0.08 million km/day, which is equivalent to two equatorial lines around the earth. Our Challenges to the Future Consideration of a new public transportation in the mid-long term perspectives To considerate and suggest to the citizens the future image of a traffic system as a pedestrian friendly city on a basis of the 10-15 year-later transportation demand Improvement of convenience of existed public transportation More Punctuate, Express, Comfortable Multiplier effects Consideration to introduce new public Transportation systems (LRT,BRT) demand forecast and expected balance, management organization, impacts of the neighbor roads etc. Drive for Kyoto, Enjoyed by Walking 9

Kyoto in the future For the sustainability of life in Kyoto and to continuously attract tourists Health Environment Kawabata-Dori Street Enhance health by enjoying walking and cycling No. 1 in the ratio of walking and cycling among ordinancedesignated cities in the country People Send a message of Do you Kyoto? to the world. Apply stricter environmental standard than other cities Kamogawa Child rearing/education Centered Landscape/culture Community People comes and goes, adult and children interacts to each other. Education culture in Kyoto starts by saying Hello Preserve graceful townscape and landscape for 50 or even 100 years in the future with New landscape policy Sightseeing/economy Hanamikoji-Dori Street Shinkyogoku-Dori Street Create a lively community based on townpeople culture with 1200 years of history Realize historical sightseeing city that makes people from around the world feel like visiting again Drive for Kyoto which makes all happy!
