The Miami University Cheerleaders and Mascot are an integral part to Miami University, and the community. The Cheerleaders take pride in promoting school spirit, encouraging positive crowd participation at Miami events. Miami Cheerleaders are excellent ambassadors for the University and participate in off-campus performances and events. All squad members are expected to be honest, respectful, have a strong work ethic, and uphold the Miami University Cheerleading brand. Program Requirements All squad members are required to attend all practices during the fall and spring semesters, and: All home & away football games; Travel Squad is selected based of performance and staff decision Select Volleyball Games All men s and women s home basketball games Home Hockey Games Games/practices held during semester breaks, spring break, and University scheduled/national holidays; MAC Championship and Bowl Game for Football; MAC & NCAA tournaments for MBB and WBB Competition Squad for UCA or NCA Competition College Cheer and Mascot Camp Special appearances (on and off-campus); and Various athletic, community service and fundraising events. Stunting & Tumbling Stunting and tumbling skills are very important to the Miami Cheerleading Program. Stunting experience is not required to try out/make the squad, but it is highly encouraged. All current and future squad members are required to have a back tuck (standing or running) and to work on mastering skills higher.(standing or running). Mascot Swoop, Miami s official mascot, is an important member of the Miami Cheerleading & Mascot Program to Miami University. Swoop can be seen alongside the Miami Cheerleaders during games and at various campus and community events. Tryouts Tryouts for the cheerleading squad and mascots are held each spring for the following academic year. Cheer Clinics It is highly encouraged (but not required) to attend Miami Cheer Clinics throughout the academic year to better prepare for spring tryouts. Questions? When selecting cheerleaders we are looking for individuals that demonstrate proper technical skills, prior cheerleading experience, leadership, commitment to the program, & ability to function in a mature and responsible manner. You will be evaluated during the entire weekend by the coaching staff. Along with assessing your cheerleading skills, we will also be looking for how you accept constructive criticism, your work ethic, and your willingness to learn. Each person will enter Sunday with a score from overall learning of the material and interview going into Sunday. This score, along with your judges score will be used in determining the team for the upcoming year. All squad placements are ultimately at the discretion of the head cheerleading coach. Each prospective cheerleader will be evaluated on the following: Motions: (2-3 chants will be taught) Fight Song: (will be taught) *Males will be taught fight song motions* Mile Run Interview: This will be done on Friday and needs to be treated like a job interview. Standing and Running Tumbling: Standing Tucks and throw your best standing; Running you will need to throw your best running pass Stunts: Partner stunting for returning members will need to be Toss Extensions, libs and stretches; As new members trying out will need to show chair and hands. If you have something more please let us know during the tryout process. Group stunting if you have this as a base, flyer, back spot we will try these out as well. During tryouts we will be looking to see where your abilities fit best the program. You will be judged on your overall skills and potential. All those participating in tryouts must provide a completed tryout application form, a photograph head shot 5x7 or larger head shot,(only new or transfer students to Miami) must bring Copy of Acceptance letter to Miami University, proof of physical within the last 12 months and must include date and
physician signature, waiver/release form, & a photocopy of medical insurance. If you are under the age of 18 years, you must have a parent/guardian sign. All forms are to be submitted at the beginning of the tryout weekend or participation will be denied, NO EXCEPTIONS. Tryout Attire Thursday Night- Females: T-shirt, shorts and cheer shoes, Males: T-shirt, shorts and cheer shoes Friday Night- Business Dress for a job interview Females: Business Suit or Dress Males: Suit, Tie; and T-shirt, shorts and cheer shoes for material review Saturday Tryouts Females: Black Sports Bra, black shorts, clean cheer shoes, hair half up half down with white ribbon and natural make-up * Males: Plain Red T-shirt, black shorts, Clean Shaving NO jewelry to include piercing of any kind & NO fingernail polish except clear or a French manicure! **Please remember you are trying out to be an ambassador of Miami University. It would be in your best interest to come to the clinic and the tryout looking your best. VIDEO TRYOUT: This video and application will be due to Coach Casto by April 22 nd at 5pm. The following items need to be in the video: - 2-3 Short Sidelines with Motions you can use your schools or; If you have attended our Clinics then you can use those sidelines. - Fight Song you can use yours from school; however if you have been to our clinic you can do our fight song. - Tumbling: Standing we will need to see a solid standing tuck on a flat mat surface NO SPRING FLOOR, and then also your best standing tumbling; Running Tumbling we need to see 2-3 passes of your best passes again NO SPRING FLOOR - Stunting: Coed Stunts you will need to show your highest skills for example if you highest is a hands lib or toss stretch or a rewind. We encourage you to throw your highest and cleanest skills. Group Stunts again please show highest skill and if you can do more than one possible position make sure you indicate on the video where you are at. - Have a Section telling us about yourself, where you are from, Why did you choose Miami, and What you are looking forward to about being a Cheerleader at Miami University. Mascot Tryouts: Mascot Tryout for the 2016-2017 Season will be Saturday April 30 th 10a-2p Things that you will need to have prepared and bring Application with you on that day: -1 minute and 30 second skit. You have have props and and any help you would like to have to make your skit the best it can be. Please make sure that the skit is clean and appropriate. -You will get to have SWOOP costume on and we will put you through different gameday scenarios. -There will also be an internview as well by the Judges and or the Coaching staff.
