FISH BITES ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (45-24) RHP Carlos Martinez (7-3, 2.80) vs. MIAMI MARLINS (30-41) RHP Jose Ureña (1-3, 4.18) MARLINS PARK, MIAMI, FL Tuesday, June 23, 2015 7:10 P.M. The Marlins and Cardinals open their 2015 season series tonight with the first of three at Marlins Park at 7:10 p.m. A pair of 23-year-old youngsters from the Dominican Republic square off in tonight s contest. Miami will send right-hander Jose Ureña (of Santo Domingo) to the bump for the sixth start (eighth appearance) of his debut campaign, while the Redbirds call on righty Carlos Martinez (of Puerto Plata), who is just nine days younger than his counterpart. Neither pitcher has ever faced his opponent tonight. Miami is coming off a 1-4 road trip on which it visited the Yankees (0-2) and Reds (1-2). That came on the heels of a 5-1 homestand against Colorado (3-1) and the Yankees (2-0). Tonight s National Anthem will be performed by Marlins Energy Team member Elisa, and ceremonial first pitches will be thrown by Los Pichy Boys and St. Thomas University pitcher Ben Ancheff. VS. THE CARDINALS The Marlins and Cardinals open a three-game series at Marlins Park tonight. Miami was 4-2 vs. the Cardinals last season, 2-1 at Marlins Park, and has won four of its last five against the Redbirds. The Marlins are 68-98 all-time vs. the Cardinals, 32-50 at home (5-5 at Marlins Park). SUNDAY Miami faltered with runners in scoring position, going just 1x11 and leaving the bases loaded twice in a 5-2 loss to the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Dee Gordon (3x5, sb) and Derek Dietrich (2x5, 2b) led off the game with singles before Giancarlo Stanton staked Miami a 1-0 lead with a ground out to score Gordon. After a two-run homer in the bottom half gave Cincy a 2-1 advantage, Justin Bour tied it up in the second with a solo home run. That was the last of the scoring for Miami, which loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth before Reds closer Aroldis Chapman struck out the side to end it. CHANGE OF CIRCUMSTANCE Since snapping a seven-game home losing streak to St. Louis (final three losses at Marlins Park) on June 27, 2012, Miami has gone 5-2 against the Redbirds in South Florida. The Marlins have pounded out 10-or-more hits in five of those contests, averaging 5.0 runs per game with a.288 (65x226) team average. The Fish are slugging.469 in that time, with with 16 doubles, two triples and seven home runs, including a long ball in three straight outings. Giancarlo Stanton has played in all seven of those games, posting a.360 (9x25) average, with three doubles, three home runs, seven RBI, and a.840 slugging percentage; Adeiny Hechavarria has a hit in five of the six games he has appeared in during that span, batting.304 (7x23) with a triple and three RBI. REELING EM IN ON HOME WATERS Miami s pitching staff has posted a 1.83 ERA (103 ip/21 er) over its last 11 games at Marlins Park, dating back to May 23, when the Fish snapped a nine-game home losing streak. The Club is 9-2 at home over that span. Marlins hurlers have held opponents under two runs in five of those 11 contests, including four of the last six, and have registered two 15-strikeout games (May 23 vs. Baltimore & June 13 vs. Colorado), which is a season high. Prior to May 23, Miami had a 3.99 ERA (212/94) in 23 home games (8-15 team record), and had held opponents under two runs just twice. Since May 23, Miami s home ERA ranks third in the Majors, behind Pittsburgh (1.17) and St. Louis (1.75), as does the Club s home winning percentage (.818), behind Pittsburgh (.846/11-2) and St. Louis (.846/11-2). ROOKIE IS CATCHING ON J.T. Realmuto has played more games this season (49) than any other rookie catcher in baseball, ahead of Detroit s James McCann (48), Boston s Blake Swihart (36), and the Mets Kevin Plawecki (35). Realmuto leads that group in runs (21), hits (45), triples (four), and RBI (18), and is second to McCann (10) in doubles, with nine. He is tied with Pittsburgh s Jung Ho Kang for 11 th place in hits among all rookies, and tied with three others for second in triples, behind Paulo Orlando of Kansas City (five). Realmuto currently ranks fifth in Club history in games played at catcher by a rookie, behind Charles Johnson (97 in 1995), Rob Brantley (65 in 2013), John Baker (59 in 2008), and Ramon Castro (50 in 2000). He already ranks tied for third in RBI (with Brantley), behind Johnson (39) and Baker (29), and fourth in hits, behind Johnson (79), Baker (58), and Brantley (47). CALLED UP AND DIALED IN Since being recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on June 12, Derek Dietrich is batting.333 (8x24) with a.429 on-base percentage (two walks, two hbp), and a.833 slugging percentage (three doubles, three home runs). Since that date, he ranks second among Major League third basemen in slugging (min. 20 at-bats), behind Todd Frazier (.895). He also posted his first career multi-home run game on Saturday at Cincinnati (2x2, 2 hr, 3 rbi). NO JUNE SWOON HERE Giancarlo Stanton has 10 home runs this month, tied with Hanley Ramirez (2008) for the most home runs in June in Club history. With seven games remaining in the month, Stanton is two homers shy of tying his own Club record for home runs in any month, which is 12 (May of 2012). He leads the NL in home runs this month, and is second in the Majors behind Albert Pujols (12). The most home runs hit in a single month this season was 13, by Bryce Harper in May. Stanton has a hit in all nine home games so far this month (.419/13x31), with five home runs and 13 RBI. FIRST-HALF MARKS IN PERIL With 18 games remaining before the All-Star break, Giancarlo Stanton has 25 home runs and 64 RBI. The Club record for home runs prior to the break is 28, by Mike Lowell in 2003, followed by Gary Sheffield (1996) and Stanton with 25, and Hanley Ramirez (2008) & Dan Uggla (2008), with 23 each. The record for RBI is 76, also by Lowell in 2003, with several players currently standing between Stanton and that mark. Also, Dee Gordon has 104 hits on the season; the Club record for the first half is 117, by Juan Pierre (2003) and Ramirez (2007).
