Notes from the Board Columnist: Dave Hinderliter Hello, CDC Members! It seems every month I write about the same three things: the past, present, and future of our dance club. Well, believe it or not, the future depends on the past and present. In 1955 (the same year I was born) there were quite a few single people and married couples who were bored on Sunday evenings and I m guessing they enjoyed dancing. From what I understand, these energetic people started a dance club and it was called the 55 Club. Some years later, the name was changed to the Continental Dance Club and a board of directors was formed. Now, each year we have nominations to possibly welcome four new board members, with four existing members having ended their terms of office. The year I joined the board, I felt the need to give back, helping those who have made Sunday night my favorite dance night and Starlight Ballroom my favorite dance place. The next year we had just enough volunteers to serve on the board, but our President had served her full term of six years and had to pass the baton. That is how, in 2017, I came to be appointed President. Since then, together with the help of the other seven board members, we have been trying to do the things that will make our dance club be around for another fifty years or more. With your help (yes, you!) I really do see this happening. If you would like to become a board member, let me or another board member know. Even if you re not ready to make that commitment, there are ways you can volunteer to help keep our club great. Believe it or not, every week we need two volunteers to sell 50/50 tickets. You can help us find possible advertisers for the newsletter. You can take pictures of special moments in your dance life and send them to the board. You can help with the set-up and the clean-up for party or snack nights. No, you don t have to do this every month, but let a board member know you can be available to help sometimes. One of the big changes that we are all seeing is the lack of good, affordable bands. I must admit I really like the live bands, as they are a nice change from the CDs that Continued on page 6 CDC Halloween Party October 28 Bring Snacks to Share page 2

Dance Instruction October From our Dance Instructor Chairman Ben Davis We welcome back professional dance instructors Ed Godby-Schwab and Diana Miller who will be teaching Foxtrot to our intermediate and advanced dancers Together, as independent instructors, Ed and Diana have been providing dance instruction to the Indianapolis and surrounding areas for the past 9 years. They are available together, or individually, for both group and private lessons in American Smooth and Rhythm dances. The beginner lesson, in the small ballroom, will also be Foxtrot. We thank our last month s professional instructors, Jonas Kazlauskas and Kathleen Ilo, who taught Quickstep. Thanks also to Roger and Amy Greenawalt who gave our beginners a General Intro to Dance. Please invite your friends to come and join us in learning new dance steps. Both beginning and intermediate dance lessons are available only WITH paid admission to the dance. MY CDC KATHY AND TED HEISE We began dancing shortly after my 50th birthday in Bloomington, Indiana. In fact, our first set of Arthur Murray dance lessons had been my birthday present from my husband, Kathy Heise explains. Ten years later, the couple is very much still at it, having now relocated to West Lafayette, continuing lessons from Arthur Murray, Carmel, and occasionally showing off their skills at studio showcases. We didn t meet through dancing, Kathy explains, but it s something we love sharing. Favorite dances? Waltz and Foxtrot. Kathy favors the waltz because of the lilt and sway of ¾ time, which she finds particularly graceful and elegant. A retired public school music teacher, Kathy is enjoying a second career as consultant to the Leonard Bernstein Institute. Ted still works full time as a regulatory scientist for MED Institute (a subsidiary company to Cook, Inc.) The Heises actually spent most of their lives in Nebraska, and moved to Indiana for Ted s job. The couple enjoys travel, yet they have zero intentions of becoming snowbirds, as they enjoy the changing seasons. Meanwhile, the three Heise sons live on either the East or West Coast. Both Ted and Kathy are avid cyclists; both own single bikes, but often take trips on their tandem bike to visit different parts of the country, participating in tandem rallies. Here in Indiana, Kathy volunteers for hospice care and teaches Zumba at a local gym. The couple came to the Starlight Ballroom to practice social dancing outside of the studio, and joined the Continental Dance Club because of the kindness and encouragement we discovered there, Kathy explains. Both Ted and Kathy have enjoyed our CDC events, including dancing at Homecoming at the Indiana Roof. Interviewed by board member Rhoda Israelov Notes from the Board Continued from page 2 are played when I take dance lessons. Well, as time goes on, these bands are disappearing. In order for us to have enjoyable music, we are hiring DJs to entertain us. The positive aspect is when Monica or Roger are DJing for us, they join us on the dance floor as well. to dig deep into their closets, really did the 50s era justice, so I m looking forward to all the Halloween costumes. We do have fun at our parties. In fact, if you all have half as much fun as I did, well, we all get our money s worth! President DAVE If you were at the 50s party in September you had to have really enjoyed the music and the food. I m telling you, our people can cook! Personally, the foods I love the most are the ones that are very, very bad for me (dessert!). The best part is knowing we have another dinner in December. You have plenty of time to figure out your next good or bad-for-you dish to share. At the 50s dance, those who chose Welcome New Members Ken Byrum Paul Harmon page 6
