Our chapter did this by having a Valentine s get together. Boy, did we have fun at Cox Brother s BBQ. We had 25 of our HOG chapter members participate. One of our activities was the exchange of Valentines. In the U.S., Americans probably began exchanging handmade valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as scrap. Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines. These are some pretty interesting statistics. We also enjoyed two other activities. The first event was pin the sticker on the cupid. Each member had their eyes covered with a scarf and were spun around in a circle three or four times and then made their best effort to pin that sticker on the X of Cupid. Dan Breci was the closest and the winner of this activity. Thank you to Claudia for helping me with this event. The second event was a question-answer activity of how well do we know each other? Each member wrote something about themselves, from the age of 6 to 18, on a 3x5 card. It was supposed to be something no one else would know. The cards were collected and each read separately and each member who participated wrote down who they thought it was. We sure learned a few things about our members, such as: outran a cop, fell out of a moving car, shot sister with a BB gun, played the clarinet, moved to Salina, and so on and so on. At the end, the person that got the most correct answers was Karen. So, I think it is safe to say that Karen knows us or she just got lucky (just kidding, way to go Karen). Also, we all sang Happy Birthday to Honey Grant and presented her with cards, balloons and a gift from the chapter. She told us that our voices sounded really good. Happy Birthday, Honey. Everyone who attended this get together needs to be thanked for their help in making it a successful and fun time. Our Valentine s Get Together would not have been as successful if you had not helped. Everyone who attended also assisted, whether it was setting up, taking pictures, helping with the activities, cleaning up and so on. So thank you all. As always, we need to thank City Cycle Sales, Honey and Scott for the donations they provided for our event. (Director s Report continued on next page)

Chapter for 2012 Philosophy I am a true believer in Team Work. It takes all of us to make our Chapter successful and our activities fun. It is not a one- or two-person show. All of us together can make it all happen. I like technology and will try to capitalize on the usage of technology to reach more members. Minutes Karen Connell secretary Vision 1. Have fun. 2. Have many adventurous rides. 3. Get more people involved in the Chapter. 4. Have a successful MDA, RFTW and Toy Run. 5. Help make the State Rally a success. 6. Don t lose focus on the Chapter and its members. 7. Do something different this year. The February meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. on February 13 by our director Phyllis Fitzgerald. A moment of prayer/silence was observed for our past friends and soldiers serving stateside and overseas, and for our family and friends in need of our prayers. This was followed with the Pledge of Allegiance. Phyllis welcomed all who were present. Our new member, James Frazier, was in attendance and introduced himself. He rides a 2012 Street Glide. Birthdays to celebrate this month include Kevin Connell 2/1, Rick Lloyd 2/2, Honey Grant 2/12, Don Rush 2/12, Bill Padgett 2/15, Dodie Greenwalt 2/21,Ruth Prescott 2/22, Len Rhodes 2/23, Vonda Copeland 2/27, Cecil Aska 2/29. Steve and Carol Ebersole celebrated 37 years of marriage in the month of February. See the flyers inside this newsletter. Carol Ebersole purchased a 2012 TriGlide. The minutes of the January meeting have been posted on the website. A motion to accept the minutes as posted was made by Dan Breci, second by David Eckel and motion carried. Select Recap of business from the last chapter meeting: 1. After Christmas Party was at Kite s. It was a great success. There is one change to the rules for the gift exchange. The person who draws number one will get a chance to steal someone else s gift. The rules for gift exchange will be posted on the website for next year. 2. Ronnie Scheller s name is on the Top Road Hog plaque for most miles rode in the 2011 year. He rode 27,927 miles. Way to go Ronnie. Business for the current chapter meeting: 1. Phyllis Fitzgerald presented the calendar of activities for the year. Orin updated the website so check it out. Flyers on upcoming events will be posted inside and outside on our chapter s board at City Cycle Sales. Phyllis will add to the calendar that Kevin and Karen Connell will host the Progressive Dinner at their home in September. Phyllis also informed the chapter that if there is an event that you would like to take the lead, please let her know. That would be a really big help since we do not have an Activities Director. Also, if there is some event (Minutes continued on next page)

FEBRUARY 2012 3 (Minutes continued from previous page) that you want to lead that is not on the calendar, let Phyllis know and she will get it put on the calendar and emailed out to the chapter. 2. Upcoming events (not all inclusive): First Annual Black Tie & Leather Biker Ball, Mar 24, 2012 R.C. McGraws Flame of Hope Ride, June 16, Special Olympics Kansas, CCS a stop State HOG Rallies: Daytona Beach FL, March 10-17, Scottsdale AZ, March 28 April 1, Lafayette, LA, April 19-21, Fort Worth TX, May 3-5, Pelham, AL, May 17 to 19, Beatrice, NE, May 23-27, Washington D.C, May 26-27 3. The Run for the Wall Fundraising/Bingo event will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 10. If you have items to donate for prizes, please bring them to City Cycle Sales. Also, Claudia Perry (Ladies of Harley) is collecting items for baskets to be used as prizes or to bid on. The list of items needed is at City Cycle Sales. Anyone who would like to donate a pot of chili or bring a dessert, please call Sue Gwaltney at (785)307-0157. Money raised will pay for flowers for the Run for the Wall memorial wreath and beaded key chains to hand out to riders participating in the Run for the Wall Ride. Watch for the flyer and plan on bringing friends. Let s try and get 100 people to participate. 4. Phyllis has arranged for a group picture to be taken before the June meeting at 6:30 p.m. in celebration of our 25th year as a Harley Owners Group Chapter. So, please plan on attending. 5. A proposal was made to buy a Harley cooler to use at meetings and bike nights. City Cycle Sales offered to let the chapter buy the cooler for under $200, before taxes. Discussion on the cooler included: It would be nice for individuals to not have to bring their own cooler. A regular cooler would be cheaper and easier to drain the water. A motion was made by Dan Breci to buy the cooler. Dave Eckel second the motion. Members voted on the motion and it was overruled. 6. A proposal was made to add to the by-laws that the Junction City Harley Owners Group Chapter s Board has the authority to spend up to $200 without bringing the expenditure to the general membership for approval. It was decided to look into what other chapters policies are concerning this matter. This proposal will be discussed again at the March and April 2012 meetings and then voted on. So, please think about this issue and email Phyllis your thoughts. 7. Several proposals were made for incentives to encourage chapter members to turn in mileage in addition to riders with the most miles ridden added to the Top Road Hog plaque. Ideas included: dinner for two, oil change, bike detailed and free membership to the chapter the next year. A motion was made that each person turning in their mileage by Dec. 31 would be eligible to put their name in for a drawing for a chance to have the upcoming year membership paid for. If they had already paid for their membership, the member would be reimbursed. The motion included that the drawing would be for three members to receive their membership free. 8. Highway cleanup: 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. After highway cleanup, we will plan to eat at Mr. K s Farmhouse in Abilene. I hope to see many members at the highway cleanup. 9. Dan Breci, State Rally Coordinator, updated the chapter on rally plans. Thank you to the State Rally Committee. 2. Thank you to everybody that came to the meeting. We are going to do this at every meeting. When you show up, take a 3x5 card and write something on it in regards to someone you want to thank publicly. Sometime during the meeting a couple cards will be drawn and read. The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 12. Motion to adjourn was made by Dave Eckel, second by Andy Kazar and motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Uncle Scott s Chrome Corner Scott Templeton parts manager Let s see the winter is over or it never got here or we are not sure. What we are sure about is the riding season is just around the corner and it teases us with a few great days to get out and put a few miles on before the weatherman gives us the bad news. Just got back from the show and there is a lot of new clothing and accessories coming out. For example, there are Shrink Packs to collapse bulky clothing down to a fraction of its size, foot pegs, Black Hollywood Bars, Lower Shocks for Sportsters and Softails, More Boom Audio, Make your Headlight Modulate on and off in daylight hours for better visibility, Round Air Cleaner Covers (Old School), and more. You will start to notice cleaning supplies and oil products are looking a lot different. It is still the the great stuff you have been using but in a better looking package. We have also have expanded our fit shop further. We can simulate reduce reach foot pegs for Dyna and Sportster. We have a Demo seat program so you can try a seat before you buy it on some models. Also, a Windshield demo program on Electra Glide and Road Glide models. With all this, the Harley-Davidson spring promo started the Feb. 15 and goes to March 31, 2012. With a $300 purchase of Harley-Davidson or licensed products you get a cool H-D Custom Lantern for free. Hope to see you all soon and show you some of these great products.

Wanda Allen editor I emailed the membership recently about my ksu email getting blocked from going to hotmail and msn accounts and maybe some others. Hopefully, the ksu block will be resolved soon but meanwhile, please bear with me. Be sure to check your spam or junk mailboxes for anything I might send to the membership. 6 FEBRUARY 2012 A Word from our Sponsor Honey Grant general manager The year is starting out with our season being Kansas wait one day and it could be winter, fall, spring before you know it. I know not too many people have had cabin fever and have been out riding. For the new H.O.G. members, make sure you tell the sales clerks that you are a H.O.G. member so they will give you your discount. We, (City Cycle Sales employees), are wanting to get to know you and willing to answer any questions you have. I know I want to get to know you also. Please stop in and say Hi, and feel free to ask me anything. If I don t know the answers, I know the right person to answer it for you. The H.O.G. chapter has their yearly planning board up and they are ready to go. I see Phyllis, the new director, is as upbeat as anyone can be, and is having fun doing what she loves best. I can say no grass grows under her feet. City Cycle Sales just went to the Dealer Winter Meeting and two of the NEW MOTORCYCLES are already here. See the SLIM, and the 72. We are getting the new products in already for you to come and get for yourself or your motorcycle. I want to thank everybody for thinking of me for my birthday. I got lots of cards and nice gifts.
