game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Wednesday, August 15 AutoZone Park Memphis, TN new orleans baby cakes (59-61) at Memphis redbirds (74-47) RHP Zac Gallen (7-7, 3.85) vs. RHP Connor Jones (1-0, 5.11) THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes continue a sevengame road trip with the third of a four-game set against the Memphis Redbirds. The Cakes have won six of 11 meetings this season. NOLA has won nine of 10 for the first time since claiming 11 of 12 contests from August 9-21, 2016, and the Cakes are within two games of the.500 mark for the first time since June 23 (36-38). YESTERDAY S NEWS Peter Mooney s sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning drove in the winning run in the Baby Cakes 4-3 victory over Memphis Redbirds. Solo homers by Peter O Brien, Tomas Telis and Jon Rodriguez, the latter two coming back-to-back in the fifth, built a 3-0 edge for New Orleans. Sandy Alcantara eased through the first four innings, limiting the Redbirds to two hits with six strikeouts, but Wilfredo Tovar doubled in the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Edman before Rangel Ravelo drilled a two-run homer to tie the game. The score remained knotted into extra innings, when the Cakes brought in the runner from second courtesy of a Rodriguez single and Mooney s sacrifice fly. Nick Wittgren was able to strand the potential tying run at third in the bottom half of the frame to nail down his second save. Ben Meyer worked 3.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to pick up the victory after Alcantara turned in a six-inning quality start. ON THE HILL Zac Gallen takes the mound to make his team-leading 22nd start. In two assignments against his former club, Gallen has struck out 16 Redbirds while allowing On This Date... just one run in 11.0 innings. He left each game with a four-run advantage, only for the bullpen to suffer blown saves in each instance. Gallen is 3-4 with a 5.82 ERA in 12 road starts, but his 3.85 ERA overall ranks seventh in the PCL. The Triple-A All-Star right hander had won three straight coming out of the break before losing each of his last two starts, though he has fanned 14 against only two walks in those outings. 2002: Colin Porter delivered the winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th to lift New Orleans over Oklahoma 6-5. Porter s hit in left-center field comes with runners on the corners and nobody out, allowing Dave Matranga to score the game winner. BACK-TO-BACK The PCL named Austin Dean its Player of the Week for August 6-12. Dean s 2.053 OPS over five games bested all players in Minor League Baseball. He also paced the PCL in batting average (.647), slugging percentage (1.353), on-base percentage (.700), total bases (23), while matching the league s top home run (3) and extra-base hit (6) marks. Additionally, he drove in seven runs, scored seven runs and walked three times. On the heels of J.B. Shuck last week, they become the second NOLA duo to win the award in back-to-back weeks, joining Colin Porter and Jason Alfaro for July 21-27 and July 28-August 3rd, 2003. This is Dean s third career Player of the Week award and second this season, netting Southern League honors for April 16-22 with Jacksonville, after hitting.520 in seven games. BIG PETE Peter O Brien reached base three of four times last night with a pair of walks and a home run, his third straight game going deep and fourth home run in that span. O Brien is the first Baby Cake to homer in three consecutive games since Destin Hood went yard in four straight (five total) in Colorado Springs from May 23-26 last season. On Sunday, O Brien became the second Baby Cake (Austin Dean) to have a two-home run game with his 14th career two-homer game, and fifth at Triple-A. O Brien was also the first NOLA player to hit home runs in consecutive at-bats since Xavier Scruggs on August 17, 2016 at Salt Lake. Five of O Brien s first 10 hits with NOLA have been home runs. TO THE MOON Peter Mooney has hit safely in seven of his last eight games and delivered the game-winning RBI last night. Mooney is 35x107 (.327) in his last 33 games with six home runs and 27 RBI, after totaling just four RBI and zero home runs in his first 28 games. Mooney s 19 RBI in July finished 11th in the PCL, and were the most in any month during his seven-year career, surpassing the 10 RBI in both July and August last season. He is batting.368 (35x95) in 28 games at home, compared with a.264 mark (24x91) in 31 contests on the road. BOMBS AWAY The Baby Cakes matched their season-high with three home runs in a game last night. Tomas Telis and Jon Rodriguez became the second pair of Cakes to hit back-to-back home runs, joining, Austin Dean and Magneuris Sierra, also against Memphis on June 3 in New Orleans. The Cakes have swatted 10 home runs during their four-game winning streak. ROAD WARRIORS Since getting swept in a three-game series in El Paso to open August, the Cakes have won six consecutive road games, their longest such streak since a seven-game run against Round Rock and Memphis, June 12-26, 2007. They have outscored opponents 55-26 in the span, hitting.327 (88x269). New Orleans had been a PCL-worst 19-36 on the road prior to the winning streak. EXTRA EXTRA The Cakes snapped a three-game losing streak in extra-inning games, bringing their season tally to 7-9. They are tied with Rochester (6-10) for the most extra-inning games in Triple-A. The club record is 23 extra-inning affairs in 1997. LONELIEST NUMBER The Baby Cakes played in their PCL-leading 43rd one-run game of the season, four more than the next-closest team (Round Rock, 39). Despite being just 19-24 on the season (12th in the PCL), the Cakes have won four straight one-run games. Seven of the 11 meetings with Memphis have been decided by a single tally. DOG DAYS Through 13 games in August, the Cakes are 9-4 and have scored 85 runs, tied with Las Vegas to lead the PCL. New Orleans ranks second in home runs (18), third in batting (.292) and fourth in ERA (3.99). The bullpen has posted a 1.63 ERA (9 ER/49.2 IP) this month, including a 0.68 mark (2 ER/26.1 IP) over the last eight games. NOLA has not had a winning month since going 15-11 last August. ROSTER MOVES The Marlins have purchased the contract of Austin Dean, the first big league call-up of his seven-year career. In 87 games for New Orleans, Dean hit.326, tied for fourth in the PCL, with nine home runs and 54 RBI. Miami optioned utility player Chris Bostick to the Cakes, after Bostick walked and doubled in a pair of pinch hitting appearances in his Marlins organizational debut. LOCAL TIES Right-hander Kyle Keller is joining the Baby Cakes from AA Jacksonville. In 39 appearances between the Jumbo Shrimp and High- A Jupiter, he went 2-4 with a 3.33 ERA and his eight saves are tied for third-most among Marlins farmhands. Keller is a Metairie native who played at Jesuit High School before attending Southeastern Louisiana and was an 18th round selection of Miami in 2015. Keller is the second former Jesuit star this year to play for the Cakes, joining Johnny Giavotella. 6:35 p.m. CT Game #121 Road Game #62 cakes corner Current Streak...W4 Home... 34-25 Streak...W2 Road... 25-36 Streak...W6 Last 10... 9-1 vs. RHP (starter)... 45-52 vs. LHP (starter)... 14-9 vs. Division... 19-14 vs. American Conference... 44-49 vs. Pacific Conference... 15-12 vs. NL Affiliates... 34-41 vs. AL Affiliates... 25-20 Day... 15-14 Night... 44-47 Extra Innings... 7-9 Shutouts... 10-4 One-Run Games... 19-24 Score 5+ Runs... 33-14 Scoring First... 36-21 Opponent Scores First... 23-40 Commit Error... 20-37 Hit Home Run... 34-20 Quality Start... 37-11 Outhit Opponent... 40-14 Leading After 6... 44-11 Trailing After 6... 6-43 Leading After 7... 45-11 Trailing After 7... 6-45 Leading After 8... 45-3 Trailing After 8... 2-42 Series Record...10-15-5 Series Openers... 16-15 Series Finales... 14-16 Doubleheader Games... 3-5 DH Sweep/Swept/Split...0/1/3 Come From Behind Wins...29 Bat Around For/Against...8/7 Longest Win Streak...+6 Longest Lose Streak...-7 High Water Mark...+3 Low Water Mark... -10 White Jersey... 26-16 Grey Jersey... 13-18 Blue Jersey... 18-23 Pelicans Jersey... 1-1 Misc. SEVENTH HEAVEN With 7.0 shutout innings on 4/21 vs. Oklahoma City, Gallen became the first Baby Cakes pitcher to work at least 7.0 innings in 2018. Gallen held the Dodgers to four hits and fanned five to record his second victory. He repeated the feat on 5/3 vs. Round Rock with 7.0 scoreless frames in a no-decision with a season-high six strikeouts. HOME SWEET HOME Gallen did not surrender a run over his first four starts at home, pitching 26.0 consecutive scoreless innings to open the season. Opponents batted.204 (19x93) and just.048 (1x21) with runners in scoring position. The streak ended at 29.0 IP on 6/2 vs. Memphis when Anthony Garcia led off the fourth inning with a home run. K MAN With nine strikeouts in 6.0 IP on 5/9 at Round Rock, Gallen equaled his career high, set twice in 2017 with High-A Palm Beach. It was Gallen s fifth quality start in his first seven outings of the season. CENTURY MARK Gallen threw 107 pitches in a no-decision on 6/2 vs. Memphis, a new career high. Gallen had never thrown more than 100 pitches, a plateau reached twice in 2017 while with High-A Palm Beach. He surpassed the mark with 111 pitches on 6/28 vs. Iowa, most by a NOLA pitcher in 2018. LIMITING THE DAMAGE Though opponents batted.284 against Gallen through his first 13 starts, he yielded only a.213 average (20x94) with runners in scoring position. Each of the four home runs he surrendered came with the bases empty. DIRTY DOZEN Colorado Springs knocked Gallen for 12 hits in 4.2 innings on 7/3, matching Jarlin Garcia (6/27 vs. Iowa) for the most hits surrendered by a Baby Cakes pitcher in 2018. The Sky Sox used three home runs, a career high against Gallen, to score nine runs, the first time in 45 career starts he allowed more than five runs in a game. YOU RE AN ALL-STAR For the second straight season, Gallen earned league All-Star honors as he was selected to the PCL squad by ranking ninth in the league with a 3.43 ERA through his first 15 starts. Gallen needed just seven pitches to retire the International League side in order in the sixth inning of the Triple-A All-Star Game on 7/11. ROAD WOES Across his first nine road assignments, Gallen went 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA (33 ER/43.1 IP). Opponents batted.358 (67x187), and plated at least four runs in six of the nine starts. BACK ON TRACK Gallen snapped a nine-start winless drought with 6.0 innings of one-run, three-hit ball on 7/16 at Oklahoma City.
