GAME 4 (1-2) HOME GAME 4 (1-2) TODAY'S BROADCASTS FSFL WINZ (940 AM) WAQI (710 AM) FISH BITES Leftt-hander Dillon Peters will make his first start of the season in the finale of this four-game set against the visiting Chicago Cubs. Today's start will mark Peters's first career start against the Cubs, and just the seventh start of his career. He will face off against LHP José Quintana, who is making his first career start and appearance against the Marlins. Miami concluded 2017 with a 77-85 record and second-place finish in the National League East. LAST NIGHT VS. CUBS For the second consecutive night, Miami and Chicago went to extras, with the Cubs coming out on top by the score of 10-6. Miami jumped out to an early lead, going up 2-0 on Derek Dietrich's two-run home run in the bottom of the first. The Cubs tied the game in the top of the second and added three more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. The Marlins didn't sit idle as they scored three in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. With the bases loaded and none out, Lewis Brinson singled to center to drive in the first run of the inning; Starlin Castro dropped a soft liner into left to score two and tie the game. Following a Chicago run in the sixth, Bryan Holaday plated the equalizer in the eighth with an RBI single to center. Miami received multi-hit efforts from Dietrich (2x4) and Miguel Rojas (2x4). A few hours after finishing game two of this series, Odrisamer Despaigne made the start and went 5.0 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. THE SERIES THAT DOESN'T END The first three games of this season-opening series against the Cubs has lasted a total of 36 innings. The last time two teams played as many as 36 innings over the first three games of the season was when Cleveland and Toronto went for 37 in 2012: their Opening Day tilt went 16 frames, game two went 12 and the finale went 9 (Stats LLC). The most innings the Marlins had played over the first three games of the season prior to this year was 31 in 2001 and '05. Miami's two extra-inning affairs this year are already the most in the first three games of a campaign: in 2011, the Marlins went to extras three times over their first six contests. TODAY'S TRANSACTIONS The Marlins today selected the contract of Severino González from Triple-A New Orleans and optioned OF Braxton Lee to NOLA. To make room on the roster, Brian Ellington was designated for assignment. González last appeared in the Majors with Philadelphia in 2016, going 1-2 record and 5.60 ERA (35.1 ip/22 er) in 27 relief outings. UP NEXT Miami will welcome the Boston Red Sox to Marlins Park for a two-game set beginning tomorrow at 7:10 p.m. The teams split their last season series, 2-2, in 2015, with both teams sweeping two-game sets at home. The last meeting between these two teams was on August 11-12, 2015 at Marlins Park, when Miami came away with 5-4 and 14-6 victories. The Marlins are 6-8 alltime at home against the Red Sox (3-2 at Marlins Park), and trial the overall series, 12-22. STICKIN' IT TO SOUTHPAWS With Miami facing a left-handed starter in each of the next three games, here is a look at how the Marlins have fared against southpaws. Since 2010, the team has posted a.256 average against lefties, which ranks fourth among all National League clubs. Colorado leads with a.268 mark, followed by Washington (.257) and San Francisco (.257). Garrett Cooper leads all Marlins hitters in career average against lefties with a.381 mark (8x21). He is followed by Starlin Castro (.294; 325x1106) and Brian Anderson (.265; 9x34). TOUGH TEST Based on 2017 records, Miami will have the sixth-toughest schedule in the Majors over the course of March/April, as their opponents had a combined.519 winning percentage last season. In the coming month, the Marlins will face Boston, Philadelphia, the Mets, Pittsburgh, the Yankees, Milwaukee, the Dodgers, and Colorado. However, from May through September, the Marlins have the third-easiest schedule, with opponents combining on a.485 record. - Stats LLC STARLIN IS DARLIN' Starlin Castro, who turns 28 on May 7, has amassed 1,284 career hits. Among players whose careers started in 1990 or later, his hit total is the sixth-most hits of any player prior to his 28th birthday. Alex Rodriguez led all with 1,467, and he was followed by Miguel Cabrera (1,417), Albert Pujols (1,344), Ivan Rodriguez (1,333), and Derek Jeter (1,294). Since 2010, Castro ranks 10th among active players in total hits, behind leader Robinson Cano (1,501). - Stats LLC 100 GRAND Starlin Castro is currently sitting on 99 career home runs and 499 RBI.
