ROCKET REVIEW 2 Latest Box Top News Happy 2012! Congratulations to Ella Kavicky for winning the Holy Cow Cupcakes gift certificate for our December 15th drawing. Our next drawing will be on Friday, February 24th. The gift certificate will be for the new frozen yogurt store, Yogurtz (across from Meijer). We are officially half way to our goal of $2,400! In order to make this goal, WE NEED YOU! We need all Smoky Row families to dig deep in that pantry, clip those Box Tops and turn them in. Some of you may even have a baggie or two of old Box Top coupons sitting in a drawer. Bring them in and we will gladly check them for the expiration date and take care of them! Finally, check out the website for new and continuing ways to earn money for Smoky Row. Thanks for your continued work and support! Annual Book and Game Drive Still trying to find a spot for all those holiday gifts? We have a great solution! Clean out those closets and box up your gently used books and games and bring them to the annual Smoky Row book and game drive to be held from January 23rd to the 27th. It is easy to do. Just bring your games and books to the school and there will be a large box in the entrance to place them in. We will do the rest. The items will be sorted and taken to Brookside Elementary. Last year the students and teachers loved our gifts to them. Thanks for all of your contributions. Any questions, please contact Liz Schallwig 569-1901 or Melissa Perfetti 844-7198.

ROCKET REVIEW 12 Colonial Day: March 23 2012 Dear Fifth Grade Parents: We are just a few weeks away from Colonial Day 2012, and we need help bringing about this fun filled day for our fifth grade students. This event has been a part of Smoky Row Elementary for more than 15 years, and is one of the highlights of the fifth grade calendar. Activities on the day include having students make Johnny cakes and butter from scratch, and trying out Colonial style crafts like making candles, quilting, corn husk wreaths, cutting silhouettes, and tin punches. They will square dance, listen to a Colonial storyteller, play some Colonial games and even attend school in a Colonial Classroom. The students are divided into groups, and rotate to a different station every 20-25 minutes, beginning at 8:30 am. At noon, the cafeteria provides students with a Colonial meal. After lunch, students split into two groups to attend the square dancing, and storytelling portions of the program. Students and volunteers are encouraged to dress in a Colonial fashion. We need in excess of 70 volunteers to make this day a success. We are in need of some take-charge people who would be willing to chair or co-chair the individual committees, and also many volunteers who are able to give us an hour or two on Colonial Day. ALL ACTIVITIES ARE ALREADY PLANNED- parent volunteers will guide the students in their learning experience. Each committee has a binder with activity information, instructions and suggestions from previous committees. Most supplies are already at the school. There is a budget allowance to purchase the items needed. Committees differ in the amount of time they require prior to the day- (I ran the butter making committee a couple of years ago, and previous to the day I went to Costco to buy cream, and arranged for the cafeteria to wash the baby food jars- an hour, max?) The most involved committees probably require 2-3 hours prior to the day. If you have even just one hour to dedicate on the day, most committees have one hour volunteer slots that you could take. Again, please consider volunteering for this event. It truly is one of your last opportunities to interact with your child at school- there are very few interactions at the middle school level. This is a day that builds lasting memories with your student! Thank You!
