Transcription:

FISH BITES The Marlins today conclude the first leg of their final road swing of the season with the finale of this three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks (4:10 p.m.). Miami is sending right-hander Dan Straily (10-9, 4.17) to the mound to make his second career start against Arizona: he came away with a 6-2 win on July 22, 2016 at Great American Ball Park. The D-backs counter with left-hander Patrick Corbin (14-13, 4.14), who in five previous starts against the Fish has gone 1-1 with a 5.04 ERA. Miami entered this road trip after a brief three-game homestand sweep of the Mets. After today's game in the valley, the Club heads to Colorado (Sept. 25-27) before returning home to close out the 2017 Championship Season with four games against Atlanta (Sept. 28-Oct. 1). LAST NIGHT Miami continued its offensive attack for the second straight game, tallying 12 runs and 12 hits in a 12-6 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Following a D-backs run in the second to open the scoring, the Fish pushed five runs across the plate in the third. Arizona cut the lead to one in the bottom of the frame, but Miami scored two in the top of the fourth to go up 7-4. After seeing their lead cut to one after five, Miami went on to score five unanswered runs over the final three innings to seal the win. Giancarlo finished 3x5 with a double, home run and four RBI. His two-run double in the third established a new Marlins single-season RBI record, and by the end of the night he had 125 on the year. Justin homered in his fourth consecutive game and finished the night 3x6 with four RBI. VS. THE DIAMONDBACKS Miami is 10-4 in the last 14 meeting in this series, with a 4-2 advantage this season. The D-backs lead the all-time series, 78-63, with a 42-26 advantage in the desert. UP NEXT Following this afternoon's rubber match, Miami will trek to Colorado to finish out its 2017 road slate with a three-game set at Coors Field. The Marlins swept the Rockies in in a three-game series from August 11-13 at Marlins Park, and have taken 13 of the last 17 since the start of 2015 (4-2 in Colorado). The Fish are just 40-56 all-time in the Mile High City, yet lead the overall series, 104-91. MVP WORTHY? Giancarlo doubled home two runs in the third inning of last night's game and lifted his 57th home run of the season in the 4th. With his two-run double, became the Marlins' single-season RBI leader, breaking a tie with Preston Wilson, who drove in 121 in 2000. And with his home run, became the first player with 57-or-more home runs since Ryan Howard tallied 58 in 2006. is the first National League player with 30+ doubles, 50+ HR and 125+ RBI since Barry Bonds (32 2B, 73 HR, 137 RBI), Luis Gonzalez (36 2B, 57 HR, 142 RBI) and Sammy Sosa (34 2B, 64 HR, 160 RBI) each did so in 2001. THREE QUARTERS With his 25th home run last night, Justin joined Giancarlo (57) and Marcell (36) as the first trio of Marlins teammates to record 25+ home runs in the same season since 2008. It is the fourth time in Franchise history that three-or-more teammates have recorded 25+ home runs. Dan Uggla (27), Miguel Cabrera (26) and Josh Willingham (26) were the first to do so in 2006, followed by Cabrera (34), Uggla (31) and Hanley Ramirez (29) in 2007. In 2008, Ramirez (33), Mike Jacobs (32), Uggla (32) and Jorge Cantu (29) all reached the 25 HR mark. THE CHASE COMES TO CHASE Since 2010, Giancarlo has connected for 77 home runs against National League West clubs, the fourthhighest of any player and the most of any player not on a NL West team. Matt Kemp leads with 96, while Paul Goldschmidt has 82 and Carlos Gonzalez 81. is averaging one HR every 10.16 at-bats against NL West opponents, the best ratio of any player in MLB (min. 200 AB), just ahead of Edwin Encarnacion (10.20). However, has only connected for seven home runs in 22 games at Chase Field, the lowest total of any NL West stadium he has played in. AGE IS NOTHING BUT A NUMBER With one more hit, Ichiro will become the sixth player in Major League history (14th time) to record 50+ hits at age 43-or-older. Cap Anson did it three times (1895-97), Honus Wagner in 1917, Pete Rose three times (1984-86), Tony Perez twice (1985-86) and Julio Franco four times (2002-05). - Stats LLC HOW THE WEST WAS WON Miami has gone 18-10 (.643) against NL West opponents this season, with four games to play. It would be the Marlins' best record against the division in Franchise history, ahead of a 19-11 (.633) mark in 1994. The Fish are looking to build upon a 20-12 record (.625) against the West last season, which currently ranks as the second-best mark. - Stats LLC SWEET SPOT Giancarlo hit his 57th home run of the season last night, his 45th in the two-spot in the lineup. He is now one behind Eddie Mathews (46 in 1959) for the MLB record out of the two-spot. The Marlins have already set the team record for such homers, with 51, surpassing Mathews' 1959 Milwaukee Braves, who had 47. In 13 games since returning, is batting.360 (18x50) with three doubles, four home runs, and 15 RBI, while reaching base at a.424 clip and slugging.660, for a 1.084 OPS. He is riding an eight-game hitting streak, during which he is batting.412 (14x34) with two doubles, four homers and 14 RBI. has just a.273 (6x22) career average in a small sampling at Chase Field, but did come off the bench for a pinch-hit grand slam here last season, in an 8-6 win on June 10. On June 3 this season, Edinson Volquez tossed the sixth no-hitter in Marlins history. It was the 294th in Major League history (150th in NL) and the seventh by a Dominican pitcher. Giancarlo has 14 home runs and 41 RBI against Arizona since the start of 2010. His home run and RBI totals are the most of any non-nl West opponent, ahead of Freddie Freman (13 HR, 39 RBI). THIS DAY IN MARLINS HISTORY SEPTEMBER 24 The 1996 Marlins defeated the Braves, 12-1, in Miami as Florida's bats provided 21 hits. All nine starters recorded hits for the Fish, including starter Pat Rapp who was 1x2 with an RBI. In total, 14 different Marlins players recorded hits in the contest. TORONTO (W/OAK) BIRTHPLACE REDLANDS, CA BORN DECEMBER 1, 1988 OPENING DAY AGE 28 CONTRACT STATUS SIGNED THROUGH 2017 ACQUIRED FROM CINCINNATI IN A FOUR-PLAYER TRADE ON JANUARY 19, 2017 Straily, who is four strikeouts shy of tying his career high (162 in 2016), gets the call for Miami today as the club wraps up a three-game set here at Chase Field. On the road, he is 5-6, 5.19 in 15 starts this season, compared to 5-3, 3.18 in 16 home starts. However, since June 16 he has allowed three-or-fewer earned runs in seven of nine road starts. In that time, had a six-run outing on July 25 at Texas and an eight-run outing on Sept. 13 at Philadelphia; he has a 4-1 record and 2.93 ERA (43.0 ip/14 er) in the other seven starts. He is 7-1, 3.78 in 15 appearances (13 starts) for his career against the NL West, with a five-game winning streak spanning his last nine starts. In six starts at NL West venues, has gone 4-1, 3.24; has never pitched at Chase Field. The Fish have won four of his last six starts, after losing in his first seven starts of the second half. Over his final five starts of the first half, he was 3-0, 1.99 (31.2/7), and the team went 5-0 (team was 8-2 over his final 10 starts of first half). In his start on July 19 vs. Philadelphia, he issued three walks. Snapped a streak of nine consecutive starts with one or zero walks, which tied Justin Nicolino (2016) for the second-longest such streak within one season in Club history, trailing Ricky Nolasco, who did so in his final 12 starts of 2008 (overall streak reached 13). In his start on June 16 at Atlanta, he struck out eight without walking a batter. He is the only Marlins pitcher to accomplish that feat this season, doing it twice (also, April 22 at San Diego). He is also the first Marlins pitcher to have eight-plus strikeouts and no walks more than once in a season since José Fernández did it four times last year. Only five pitchers (six times) have done it three-or-more times in a season: Anibal Sanchez (4 in 2011), Fernández (4 in 2016; 3 in 2014), Kevin Brown (4 in 1996), Javier Vazquez (3 in 2011), and Ricky Nolasco (3 in 2008). Was forced to leave start vs. Houston on May 15 for precautionary reasons after being struck on the right forearm by a line drive off the bat of Evan Gattis leading off the fifth inning. Remained in the game to retire the side and dropped down a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the frame before departing. Took loss in first start of season, April 5 at Washington, surrendering five runs on six hits (one home run) and two walks over 3.1 innings. The 3.1 innings tied secondshortest start of career (third time), behind a 2.2-inning affair on August 29, 2016 at Angels. Earned first win with Miami in Opening Night start at Marlins Park on April 11 against Atlanta. Allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits (one home run) and two walks with five strikeouts over 5.0 innings. On April 16 vs. Mets, didn t allow a hit over 5.1-inning outing, marking longest no-hit appearance of career. Previously the deepest he had taken a no-hitter was 4.0 innings, August 7, 2016 at Pittsburgh. Walked season-high five and struck out a season high-tying five. Marlins pitchers didn t allow a hit until there were two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
