His column, about politics and life across the state, appears Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the Birmingham News, and often in the Huntsville Times and Mobile Register. Before he began his column in 2004, he worked on the News' investigative team and has covered everything from crime and punishment to Birmingham City Hall, which is not always the same thing. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1986 and came to The News shortly thereafter. He is married with three children. On a more personal note, his father and both grandfathers were Methodist preachers across North Alabama. Methodist preachers covered his family tree like kudzu, appearing in every generation all the way back to the turn of the 19th century. The line comes to an end with him -- although some people claim he has a pretty loud pulpit, too. President s Letter It won t be long until the frost will be on the pumpkin, the wind will be chilly from the north, and a big blazing fire will feel good in the outdoor fire pit. The last three years fire pits have been a new craze as a backyard project. So, I think I will go with the trend and build a fire pit in the backyard this fall. If you see smoke coming from the Ross Bridge area, call the fire department. One of the most amazing October spectacles is when deciduous trees put on an autumn show in all shades of red, yellow, purple, and brown. The splendor of crisp fall days and vibrant leaves brings to mind memories for nearly everyone. In many parts of the country, autumn leaves are an important factor in tourism. In fact, Ann and I will be taking a guided bus tour in October. We will fly into Boston and then travel to Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire to enjoy the beautiful scenery. I have been before and I cannot describe the brilliance and striking colors of the New England countryside. As the weather gets cooler and outdoor activities wane, it would be a good time to think about getting involved as a volunteer with Hoover New Horizons and the Senior Center. We need individuals to volunteer to host interesting day trips. We also need assistance in organizing monthly luncheons (programs, food, registration, name tags, and decorations), special events, and someone who knows Quicken finance software. Get involved, volunteer now. Sincerely, Jim Langley President 2013 Hoover New Horizons Advisory Board Jim Langley President Beverly Sublette Vice President Janice Watson Secretary Judy Mackinaw Treasurer Earline Dance Shirley Graham Bruce Martin Diane Scripps Ken Sullivan Donna Wiltsey Board Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at 10:00AM unless otherwise specified on the Activities Calendar.
