Langley The more people I meet, the more I like my dog. Everyone needs to have a favorite Southern Saying in their back pocket to pull out and use at the proper occasion. Smiling like a dead pig in sunshine ; what does that mean? Attend the November luncheon and let Delmont give you the answer. Jimmy Langley is a storyteller, artist and published author of three books. His interest in collecting southern sayings started about seven years ago. His book, Delmont s Slang Blade, contains a portion of his collection. His work has been covered and published by regional newspapers and magazines including John Archibald of the Birmingham News and the Tombigbee Magazine. He currently serves as President of the Hoover New Horizons Advisory Board. Mr. Langley is a resident of the Ross Bridge section of Hoover and was originally from Vernon in Lamar County, Alabama. He is married to the former Ann Whitehead of Nashville. 2 President s Letter While playing golf at Oxmoor Valley, it is not uncommon to see a flock (or rafter) of turkeys grazing around the greens, undaunted by human presence. Turkeys are true natives of America. It is said that Benjamin Franklin proposed that the turkey should be the national bird instead of the Bald Eagle. I never personally observed a turkey in the wild while growing up. My crazy uncle announced one Thanksgiving Day that he had shot his first turkey and then added, It scared everyone in Piggly Wiggly s frozen food section to death. We rarely had turkey for Thanksgiving meal. My aunt brought an undercooked turkey to a Thankgiving celebration. From then on the other women insisted she only bring the loaf bread or sweet tea. More often we had a plump chicken or ham. About the only time we had turkey was when the city gave them to all employees or there was a shooting contest, a Turkey Shoot, where the winners won a big gobbler. My Daddy was Chief of Police and a crack shot. Even though Thanksgiving should be a holiday when we are all on our best behavior and grateful for all the good things that we have, many families hold their breath waiting for the next big family squabble. That is why some mothers threaten to stuff their turkey with Prozac, so they can have a calm and peaceful day. Actually, my mother never stuffed the turkey. She always made a pan of cornbread dressing that in my opinion was so much better. My family got along nicely most of the time. We had many big eaters. In October we set the clocks back 1 hour, on Thanksgiving we set the scale back 10 pounds. We would eat all of that good country cooking and then settle down, completely stuffed; the men watching the Detroit Lions play the Chicago Bears and the women in another room talking about their husbands and kids. The year is winding down fast. It seems almost over when the holidays start. I want to tell all of you who actively participated in Hoover New Horizons and the Hoover Senior Center how much the Board and I appreciate your support. I reserve a special thanks to our great staff at the Center. Dana, Tracy, Rachel, Leigh Ann, Boe, Scott and the volunteers deserve all of our thanks for a job well done.
