2 President s Letter My mother Pauline passed five years ago this month. She lived through the Great Depression and World War II. She was the most kindhearted person I ve ever known. The harshest term she ever used for a person was silly goose. She was married to Denmon for 30 years but was a widow for over 40 years. In those years, she never considered another man in her life. She was devoted to her children the same way. She did go to dinner with a widower preacher, but when he started talking marriage, she dropped him fast. She was sure he just wanted a good cook. Take time this month to remember your mother and give her a hug if you are fortunate enough to still have her in your life. During Mother s life, the biggest social events of the year were the Decorations (Memorial Days) when families came back to decorate the graves of their ancestors. During the Civil War, Columbus, Mississippi was a hospital town, and a burial site, for both side s casualties from the battle of Shiloh. Four women led a solemn march to Friendship Cemetery on April 25, One of the women suggested that they decorate the graves of the Union as well as the Confederate dead, as each grave contained a father, brother or son. Based on this history, Columbus, Mississippi has a claim as the birthplace of Memorial Day. Last month, a New Horizons group experienced the history of Columbus and Friendship Cemetery. On Memorial Day, we honor all those who have gone before and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Sincerely, Jim Langley President 2013 Hoover New Horizons Advisory Board Jim Langley President Beverly Sublette Vice President Janice Watson Secretary Judy Mackinaw Treasurer Earline Dance Shirley Graham Bruce Martin Diane Scripps Ken Sullivan Donna Wiltsey Board Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at 10:00AM unless otherwise specified on the Activities Calendar.
