CONSTRUCTION All welded steel construction, incorporting system wter connection, bolted ccess flnge nd schreder gs filling vlve. The replceble bg diphrgm ccomodtes the expnsion wter, whilst preventing contct between the expnsion wter nd vessel shell. A rechrgble gs cushion chrge, of Nitrogen or clen dry comressed ir, is segregted between the diphrgm nd shell. The diphrgm mintins seprtion between the expnding wter nd gs cushion which in cosequence becomes compressed - the resultnt increse in system pressure is mintined between set limits, in ccordnce with the vessel selection prmeters. Thermoflo vessels my lso be used in cold wter booster systems to control the booster pump running cycle. THERMOFLO S E A L E D S Y S T E M S E L E C T I O N THERMOFLO SEALED SYSTEMS FOR HEATING, COOLING AND WATER SUPPLY APPLICATIONS Thermoflo seled systems eliminte the need for n open expnsion cistern nd feed pipe, they do not hve n open vent, thus corrosion risks due to the ingress of ir re minimized. They lso llow, in pproprite instlltions, the use of smller pipes nd heting surfces by operting t tempertures in excess of 0 C. In seled wter system, llownce hs to be mde to ccommodte the incresed volume of wter resulting from therml expnsion, therefore stisfctory opertion depends on correctly selected expnsion vessels nd ncillry equipment, instlled nd pplied ccording to good customry design prctice. Generlly the selection nd ppliction procedures outlined re in complince with British Stndrd code of prctice BS7074 Prts 2&3:1989. Equipment selection is bsed on the following design stge dt: Totl system volume (litres)-the totl volume of wter in the complete system. System flow temperture ( C) - the mximum design temperture of the wter circulting in the system. Mximum mbient temperture ( C) - in chilled wter system pplictions, the mximum mbient temperture is used to clculte the expnsion volume. Sttic height pressure (br) - the pressure creted by the system height between the uppermost prt of the circuit nd the expnsion vessel level. Finl system design pressure (br) - the pressure occuring t the expnsion vessel t mximum design temperture. SELECTION PROCEDURE Determine the initil system design pressure t the initil cold wter fill temperture, tken to be 4 C, clculted s: initil pressure = sttic pressure + pressure mrgin (see tble) - br Clculte the system expnsion volume, the increse in volume of wter when rised to the design temperture, ccording to: expnsion volume=totl system volume x expnsion fctor (see tble) - litres The expnsion vessel cn be selected, from the vessel chrt, to ccommodte the clculted expnsion volume within the mximum cceptnce volume of the vessel nd llowing t lest % mrgin. SELECTION PROCEDURE As consequence of rising the system wter temperture to the mximum design temperture, the system pressure will increse to the finl system design pressure clculted s: finl pressure = initil pressure + cceptnce fctor 1.0 - cceptnce fctor If the clculted finl pressure is higher thn required, it cn be reduced by reselecting lrger volume expnsion vessel. The initil system design pressure will be utomticlly mintined by Thermoflo pressurizer incorporting high nd low pressure switches, set to interrupt the het source or chiller when predetermined mximum or minimum system pressures re reched. SELECTION EXAMPLE An office building is to be provided with low temperture hot wter heting system, hving flow nd return tempertures of 82 C nd 71 C respectively. The expnsion vessel nd pressurizer will be locted in the bsement plntroom nd subject to the mximum pressure, - the distnce from the equipment level to the uppermost prt of the heting circuit is 20 metres. The component hving the lowest working pressure is the boiler t 5 br, from which sfety vlve lifting mrgin of 0.7 br is subtrcted leving 4.3 br. The pressure hed of the circulting pump is 60 kn/m 2 nd it is locted so tht the boiler nd expnsion vessel connection re on its suction side, the effect of the pump hed will be to lower the pressure t the boiler, therefore the 4.3 br cn be considered s the mximum llowble pressure t the expnsion vessel. Totl system volume 5,000 litres Flow temperture 82 C Sttic pressure 2.0 br Mximum llowble pressure 4.3 br Initil pressure = sttic pressure + pressure mrgin The pressure mrgin t 82 C from tble is 0.5 br Initil pressure = 2.0 + 0.5 = 2.5 br Expnsion volume = totl system volume x expnsion fctor The expnsion fctor t 82 C from tble is 0.03 Expnsion volume = 5,000 x 0.03 = 150 litres From the expnsion vessel chrt, model DA is selected to ccept 150 litres expnsion volume with t lest % mrgin. Acceptnce fctor = expnsion volume totl vessel volume Acceptnce fctor = 150 = 0.3 The finl pressure is clculted ccording to: Finl pressure = initil pressure + cceptnce fctor 1.0 - cceptnce fctor Finl pressure = 2.5 + 0.3 = 4.0 br 1.0-0.3 The sfety vlve set pressure will be 4.0 + 0.7 = 4.7 br or nerest prcticl setting within the mximum llowble system pressure. The pproprite pressurizer cn be selected to mintin the initil system design pressure. The expnsion vessel nd pressuriser cn be combined s fctory ssembled, bse mounted seled system to reduce on-site instlltion.
