WHY MARCHING BAND? Marching Band offers students a unique opportunity in which they are able to develop: Musical ability Neurological multi-tasking Physical multi-tasking Discipline Teamwork Camaraderie Time Management Resiliency Creative problem-solving Respect Trust Marching Band is a great activity to have listed on your college résumé as universities arelooking for potential candidates who understand how to effectively problem solve under stress. Marching band requires physical exertion through proper marching technique. In addition to students being properly hydrated and practicing good eating habits, marching band offers the students involved a great source of physical and mental exercise. Marching Band is one of the very few activities in which there isno bench. Everyone is a starter ALL the time. FOOTBALL GAMES All performances are required. The Marching Bulldogs will attend all Butler home football games and will travel to select away games. All football games begin at 7:00pm unless otherwise stated. Band members are expected to be on their best behavior at all times. They are representing our school, community and band program! We will need parents to help with set up and tear down of the halftime show. (Pit crew) Vocabulary to know: Pre-game: Star Spangled Banner Stands Play tunes for the team and be the spirit of the game Half-time: Perform Competition show 3 rd Quarter Break: Students will have 3 rd quarter break as long as they arrive back to the band section BEFORE the 4 th Quarter begins. 2
COMPETITIONS 101 Marching Bands compete to share and showcase the hard work of each ensemble. Marching Band is judged through 6 different captions Music Marching General Effect Colorguard Drum Major Percussion COMPETITIONS 101 Marching Bands are given a class based on the size of the hornline. Bands will compete against those in their class. We will travel to the host school as an ensemble, warm up, and perform in their stadium. After our performance we will change out of uniform and watch the other groups perform throughout the day. At the end of the day there will be an awards ceremony where our leadership team will accept the awards we have received that day. Parents are encouraged to attend and cheer on our students! 3
COMPETITIONS 101 All competitions are mandatory!! We will attend competitions or have rehearsal on Saturday from the end of September throughout the month of October. All band members are required to ride the bus to competitions but may ride home with a parent if an Alternative Travel form has been turned in prior. Band members are expected to show pride, class & dignity at all events. Band members will wear show shirts under the uniform and throughout the day. SCHEDULE We only rehearse enough to enable ALL STUDENTS to succeed no more, noless. Band Camps: July 23-26 -Guard/Percussion 8am-4:30pm July 30-Aug. 3 All Members 8am-5pm Aug. 6-10 All Members 8am-8:30pm Be sure to look at your detailed schedule for other rehearsal dates. 4
