MHS HOMECOMING 2016 By Teyana Cook, Jonathan Doze, and Marisa Ortega Who has school spirit? Let s hear it! Mascoutah does. With the wildcat spirit and the Pom Boys witless dance, this year s Homecoming was one of the most memorable homecoming weeks yet! Mascoutah pumped it up! Starting the week off with Tacky Tourist Day, students showed up at school dressed as dysfunctional travelers with digital cameras. To resemble tacky tourists, students wore long white socks, khakis shorts, a floral shirt, a pair of sunglasses with an expedition hat. The next day was group day. The objective was to get students to partner up or create groups to dress up as characters to their liking. Some groups dressed up as princesses, ninja turtles, or cute animals. One group dressed up as High School Musical Wildcats and a pair dressed up as lazy homeless people. Wednesday was class day. Each class was assigned to a certain theme. For seniors it was Save the Earth day. Seniors came to school dressed up as hippies and protesters with signs that read Save the Trees. For juniors, it was Jungle day. Juniors came to school dressed as an animal or safari guides. Sophomores had to dress up as Spartan Warriors. Sophomores showed up in school wearing white bed sheets that resembled a tunic. And finally, for freshmen, it was a day in France. Freshmen wore dresses, fancy attire, or went to school as mimes. On Wednesday of that week, after school, Mascoutah held its traditional Homecoming parade with floats handmade by each class. The sophomores float came in first. Their float had a bulldozer and under the bulldozer was a football player being flattened. Flatten em was the sophomores slogan and how they did flatten the other classes floats like pancakes with their extraordinary creativity. The junior s float was a small boat burning on top of water. Their slogan was burn em. The freshman s float was Toy Story themed. There was blocks on the end and there was a printout of Buzz Lightyear glued in the middle of the float s backboard. The seniors float had little decorations. But it was filled with lots of patriotic seniors showing much spirit for their class. And for Purple Crush, their float was covered in metallic purple with an arch of balloons and under was a sign that read in bold letters, Purple Crush. Mascoutah High School s very own
Marching Indians performed in the parade too along with Mascoutah middle school band. After the parade, there was a bonfire taken place by the back fields near the end of student parking. The bonfire was quite the party! Music was playing loud and the fire was lit. There was lemonade being sold and students socialized and danced with friends. Towards the end of the event a student rapped and performed a song that he personally wrote. Students snapped and recorded him with their phones during the performance and at the end of his performance the audience cheered in excitement. And last but not least was Purple and White Day. On this last day everyone showed their Mascoutah pride by dressing up in their school colors! Many participants came wearing outfits from purple and white dyed wigs to purple and white pompoms with A LOT of glitter on them. The classes were shortened on Thursday because after school was a really amazing pep rally where all of the dance teams showed off their skills. And the most exciting event of them all was when each class participated in a contest for the much desired JUG. These events tested the true spirit and pride of each class with so many different tests that determined who had the most spirit and who is worthy of obtaining the JUG. Students sat in the bleachers next to their class. They shouted in excitement while waiting for the assembly to start. At the beginning of the assembly, the marching Indians played the school song while the color guard performed with flags and the pom team and cheerleaders cheered it on. Next JV cheer performed a cheer sequence that impressed the audience and shocked them with ooohs and aaahs. After that, varsity performed a stunning cheer called uh-oh. Their cheer had every eye at their attention and shocked the audience with thrilling flips and tricks. Next, JV dance and varsity dance showed us their sassy hip-hop dance with popish style dance moves in tune with some funky beats. Then the cheer boys showed everyone their inner cheerleader with back flips and a flamboyant routine. Thursday night was the Powderpuff game. Powderpuff is when junior and senior girls play flag football against each other and junior boys become cheerleaders and the senior boys become pom boys. The game was a blast. The audience cheered along the girls with the cheer boys and applauded the cheer boys stunts. During halftime, the pom boys performed their hilarious dance. They shook their butts and captivated the audience with loony dance moves. The rest of the game was fun and the seniors beat the juniors 18 to 12. The homecoming football game started off strong. Mascoutah was winning first and second quarter, but the other team swooped and knocked them down during the last quarter, beating Mascoutah 63 to 51. It was a thrillingchilling game to watch overall and every moment gave the crowd a sight to see. The halftime show was fulfilling too. The Marching Indians performed their show The Music of Danny Elfman and the varsity poms performed a delicate but sharp sequence. Every class had so much fun during this week. Many of the classes wished that we could do events like this more often rather than just one week. But that is why everyone loves it because they get to do things that are not normally accepted and this creates great memories for so many students and even form lifelong friendships!
October Student of the Month Lacey Albers By Keeley Reiners For the past four years Lacey Albers has been working extremely hard to have good grades and an astounding GPA. She believes that she was chosen for student of the month because she has good relationships with all of her teachers and they see her effort inside the classroom and out. Lacey hopes to continue her hard work throughout the year by maintaining her high GPA and status on the high honor roll list, completing her service for BETA and National Honor Society, and remaining as involved as possible for the rest of her senior year. She also tries to be a role model for her peers by promoting hard work and a positive attitude. Along with the title of Student of Month, Lacey described that the title comes with more judgment from peers, therefore extending the importance of working hard and being a strong role model. When she received the e-mail informing her of her accomplishment, Lacey was ecstatic at her huge accomplishment. Lacey explained that the reaction from her family and friends only added to her joy, and the congratulations she received made her accomplishment even better. In the future she plans to go to William Jewell College and study nursing, play volleyball, and minor in Spanish. Quoting Sara Evans, Lacey advises her classmates to work hard in school saying, Even on my weakest days, I get a little stronger. 2016-2017 Spirit Newspaper Staff Teyana Cook Jonathan Doze Mackenzie Ferris Marisa Ortega Keeley Reiners
