Email to: mlshively@roadrunner.com Director s Welcome Jason Wyse 440-740-4792 WyseJ@bbhcsd.org The 2013 season is flying by for the Marching Bees! We have a few remaining football games (including Homecoming & Senior Night), the Parma Band Festival, and Sounds of the Stadium then we move forward with Chair Placements for concert season! It has been a pleasure to work with this tremendous band since August I greatly appreciate the efforts and enthusiasm of these fine students, and their determination to improve every week. Also, I want to recognize what a wonderful staff that we have in Mrs. Astey, Mr. Hanna, Ms. Kubera, Mr. Sark, and Mr. Roether. Not only are they a joy to work with personally, but they always keep the best interests of our students at the forefront, and invest whatever time and effort is necessary for them to be successful. As you know, a marching band involves the combined efforts of many, many individuals. Please allow me to express my sincere GRATITUDE to all those who have contributed however much or little to this massive undertaking. Thank you! Here is what is coming up: HOMECOMING PARADE & BONFIRE Thursday, October 3rd CT 6:30 @ the Brecksville Fire Station. Dress = Spirit Wear HOMECOMING GAME Friday, October 4th (CT 5:30) Our 8th Grade Band will also be joining us this evening! They will play with us in the stands, and watch our halftime show front and center on the track, which will - of course - feature the incomparable Script Bees! PARMA BAND FESTIVAL - Saturday, October 12th (7:00 pm) CT 5:00 The Festival will be held at Byers Field. Tickets: $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for students. Bands include: Holy Name, Valley Forge, Cuyahoga Falls, Westlake, Parma Senior, Rocky River, Strongsville, Normandy, and College of Wooster. We hope to see many parents and supporters there! SOUNDS OF THE STADIUM Thursday, 10/24 @ 7pm (CT 6:15) This indoor concert provides a warm (and dry!) venue for family, friends, and fans to hear all of the exciting music from this season. The concert will be professionally recorded by Soundwaves, and orders for CDs & DVDs can be placed at the event. SENIOR NIGHT Friday, November 1st (CT 5:00) Senior band members and parents will enjoy a reception on stage prior to our march-down. You will then line up behind the band and follow us down to the stadium, where you will be recognized. We are so grateful to these seniors, and to you the parents who have invested in their musical development over these many years! (continued on pg 2)

Director s Welcome (continued) DISNEY UPDATE The first of three Disney mailings has been sent out! If you did not receive this mailing, please contact me right away. Please remember these two important dates: 1. November 15th Payment #1 & Commitment Form DUE - The payment is due to Great Day! Tours. - The Commitment Form is due to the Band Office. 2. Monday, February 24th Mandatory trip meeting - 7:00 pm in the HS Auditorium. All traveling students, and one Parent/Guardian must attend. Please mark your calendars! We are still just at the very beginning of a great musical year there is much more ahead! Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Jason Wyse Letter From the President It s hard to believe we are already in the last month of the marching band season and Disney is less than 175 days away! I can t thank enough all of our great band boosters who have helped to chaperone, passed out game snacks, hemmed and organized uniforms, collected fees, compiled the athletic program, volunteered at our Drive One event, sold programs, organized spirit wear and more! Volunteers truly are the heart of band boosters. Gina Koziol 440-838-4885 koziol1@mac.com Have you purchased your Disney raffle ticket yet? Raffle tickets are still available. We have now opened up the sale to allow you to purchase more than 3 tickets per student. We will sell until all the tickets have been sold. Simply, fill out the form in the newsletter and return to the box in the band room or come to the Band Booster meeting on Tues. Oct. 1st. We will be drawing the winner at the end of this month at the Sounds of the Stadium Concert on Oct. 24th at 7pm. If you don t win the trip to Disney, you can still get most of your trip paid for by selling citrus! Later this month we will once again be holding our main fundraiser- the citrus fruit sale. The BBHHS Marching Band citrus sale has been a tradition for nearly 20 years. Profits from sales go into student accounts which can be used to help pay for a student s Disney trip. We ve had band students in the past pay nothing for their Disney fees simply by fundraising! Questions about the upcoming citrus sale, how student accounts work, the Disney trip? Come find out more and join in on the fun at our next Band Booster meeting at 7pm Oct. 1st in the band room. Hope to see you there! Recordings are due by Friday, October 25th @ 11:59 pm - Chair Placement materials will be released online on Friday, October 11th. - This year, all chair placement recordings will be submitted in a VIDEO format. Two years ago, we moved into the digital age by submitting audio files online, now we are taking the next step and moving to video submissions! - In addition to the inherent advantages of digital media ease of submission, efficiency of evaluation, redundancy (both sender and recipient having a copy of the audition) the primary advantages to using video are: Visual Assessment There are important elements such as posture, embouchure, fingering technique, stick/mallet technique (for percussion), etc. that can only be assessed visually, and which factor into an audition. Accountability Seeing each student per form their own music removes any potential doubt about the validity of the audition. - More specific detail will be provided soon regarding procedures for recording and submitting the video auditions! - As always, each ensemble (Symphonic Band, Concert Winds, Wind Ensemble) will have its own set of audition materials. Students should be certain to record the material for their specific group. All students will utilize the same cover letter that contains the instructions and rubric. - EVERY student must submit a Chair Placement recording. Auditions allow the staff to get a snapshot of each student s musical progress. The goal is to create a balanced band sound by assigning appropriate parts and placing students where they will find the most success. - Beginning on November 4th, students will split into their respective groups: the Symphonic Bands (Crimson and Gold) will meet 5th Period; Concert Winds and Wind Ensemble will meet 6th Period. We are already looking forward to making great music!

Citrus Sale Shelly Thorton 440-838-5017 She11Thorn@yahoo.com Erin Blauman 440-717-0511 erinbohio@yahoo.com Hey everyone guess what time it is! Yes you guessed it! It s Citrus Sale Fund Raiser Time. That s right here we are again already and this is a great way to help supplement your band students upcoming Disney trip! We will be selling Florida Grapefruit and Oranges starting in early October for the Friday Nov. 2 delivery date and will also have a Friday December 13th delivery date. We will need volunteers to help us unload the truck for both days. Please let us know if you can help. We will let you know as we have more information. Thanks! Shelly Thornton & Erin Blauman We are looking for someone to learn about our Citrus Fundraiser to chair this committee next year. Contact Shelly or Erin if interested in shadowing them this year. Want to show your Bee Pride at the next home football game and tell everyone you re with the band? Hurry now to order our Brecksville Bees Marching Band jacket. Look for the order form in this newsletter. Hurry jacket available for a limited time only! Confused by all the talk about Student Accounts? Wondering if your child even has a Student Account? Every band student is assigned a virtual account within the overall Boosters General Fund. A portion of all fundraising monies raised by the student -- whether from citrus sales, Drive-One-For-Your-School, or any other band-sponsored fundraising activity -- goes into that student s Account and can be applied by that student toward the Disney Trip costs. In fact, your statements for the 1st and 2nd payments for Disney will automatically be adjusted based on your Student Account balance. Your Student Account can also be used for uniforms and accessories. Please remember, however, that the funds in the Student Account do not actually belong to the student. When the student graduates (or chooses not to continue in band), any balance remaining does NOT go to that student. This is because these are really virtual accounts; the fundraising proceeds actually belong to the Boosters for the benefit of the entire band. Similarly, if a student is not going to go to Disney, he or she cannot transfer the balance to another student (unless that other student is a sibling). If a graduating student has a balance, and there is a younger sibling in high school band or who will be coming into 9th grade the next year, we do transfer the balance to the younger sibling. All remaining balances at the end of the year, where there is no younger sibling, become part of the Band Boosters general fund. Clear as mud? If you ever have any questions or need to know your current balance, send an email to Wendy Lavey at wmlavey@sbcglobal.net.

Congratulations to Michael Bednarsky, Sam Koziol, and Gianna Caroniti, who have been selected to participate in the Macy s Great American Marching Band! These three students will spend several days in New York City, culminating in a performance in the Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade! We are very proud to have the BBHHS Bands represented in this iconic American tradition. Congrats! In late May, we were presented with the opportunity to purchase a slightly used, 6 month old, set of drums. These stateof-the-art instruments provide a bigger, resonant sound, greater durability, and other enhancements that allow the students to look and sound their best. A very big Thank You to the Band Boosters, Mr. Wyse, and Mrs. Astey for making this happen. The members of the 2013 BBHHS Drumline performed at The Taste of The Browns fundraiser on September 9th. This event, co-sponsored by The Cleveland Food Bank and Cleveland Browns, provides meals for those in need. We were proud to be a part of the event again this year. The Indoor Percussion season will begin very soon, and we are really excited about the show that is planned. Students who are interested in becoming a member should contact Brady. We will have a parent meeting on October 10th at 8:30 PM for any parents who would like to help with the season preparations. There will also be a meeting in early November to provide in depth information for the season.
