FISH BITES The Marlins finish out a seven-game homestand with the finale of this three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers today at 12:10 p.m. LHP Caleb Smith, making his ninth start of the season, is facing the Dodgers for the first time in his career. Los Angeles is countering with Kenta Maeda, who in three prior starts against the Marlins has gone 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA (18.2 ip/7 er). Following this afternoon's tilt, the Marlins will see 16 of their next 19 contests in road ballparks, with the only home series being a three-game set against the Washington Nationals from May 25-27. Miami will be traveling to Atlanta (May 18-20), the Mets (May 21-23), San Diego (May 28-31), Arizona (June 1-3), and St. Louis (June 5-7). LAST NIGHT VS. LOS ANGELES Miami held on to a 6-5 lead and ran its win streak against the Dodgers to four games. For the second straight game, the Marlins pushed across a run in the first inning to take an early lead. Miami added to that lead with a solo run in the third, and after surrendering a run in the fourth to make it 2-1, Miami plated three in the fifth to go up 5-1. In the top of the sixth, the Dodgers came back to tie the game with four runs. Miami didn't wait long to reclaim the lead, doing so for good in the bottom of the frame on a solo homer by J.T. Realmuto. Starlin Castro tied a career high with four hits, while Brian Anderson added two hits for the second consecutive night. In his first career start, Elieser Hernandez went 5.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Drew Steckenrider tallied his second win and Brad Ziegler converted his seventh save. VS. THE DODGERS Miami is out in front of the 2018 season series, 4-1, after two wins to start this series and taking two of three at Dodger Stadium from April 23-25. The Marlins are 46-52 against the Dodgers in South Florida, including an 9-12 record at Marlins Park, and trail the all-time series, 90-104. Miami has won four straight games against the Dodgers for the first time since taking a franchisebest five in a row from April 25-Sept. 9, 2016. Miami is looking to record its first sweep of the Dodgers since April 25-28, 2016 at Dodger Stadium. A win today would secure the fifth sweep of three-or-more games against LA, and fourth at home (last Sept. 6-8, 1999). A win today would mark the Marlins best record against a reigning National League champ, besting a 5-2 record vs. San Francisco in 2015; the five wins that year were the most Miami has ever had against a defending NL champ (non-nl East). UP NEXT Following this afternoon's contest, Miami will embark on a six-game road trip, beginning with the first of three games against the Atlanta Braves at SunTrust Park tomorrow at 7:35 p.m. The Marlins trail the 2018 season series, 1-3, after the first meeting between the Clubs in Miami last week. Miami is trying to improve on a 2017 campaign that saw them go 8-11 against the Braves, just 3-7 at SunTrust Park. The Marlins are 80-130 against the Braves in Atlanta, and trail the overall series, 175-243. EMERGING ARTIST Caleb Smith has struck out a combined 31 batters over his last four starts, and has 53 on the season. He is tied for 11th in the National League in strikeouts with Nick Pivetta and Tyson Ross, behind league-leading Max Scherzer (91). Among pitchers with at least eight starts, Smith ranks fourth in the National League (ninth in MLB) with a strikeout rate of 31.9% (53/166). He trails Scherzer (40.4), Patrick Corbin (34.2), and Jacob degrom (32.0) in the NL. He has limited right-handed hitters to just a.162 average (16x99), tied with Ross for third in the Majors by a starting pitcher behind Scherzer (.132) and Tanner Roark (.155). GAME 43 (16-26) HOME GAME 25 (10-14) TODAY'S BROADCASTS TV: FSFL RADIO: WINZ (940AM) / WAQI (710AM) J.T. Realmuto has hit safely in all 21 career games vs. the Dodgers (.392/31x79). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he owns the longest hitting streak vs. the Dodgers to begin an MLB career since 1900. He was previously tied with San Francisco's Jim Davenport, who hit in 18 straight to begin his career from April 15-Sept. 1, 1958. Realmuto's streak is the longest current hitting against the Dodgers among active players. Joe Mauer ranks second at 14. It is tied for the second-longest streak to open a career against an opponent in Club history: Luis Castillo had a 23-game streak against Tampa Bay from 1999-2003 and Marcell Ozuna went 21 games against Tampa Bay from 2013-17.
