As ever, it s been a busy few months for Netball in Suffolk. Over half term we attended the Suffolk Show with England Netball s fab Netball Anywhere Pop-up Court, which was a huge success (despite the long grass underneath and the uneven surface!) More on that on page 2. We ve also held a second High 5 Festival at St Joseph s College in Ipswich and we managed some sunshine this time. The highlight for me as probably been the huge success of the Back to Netball sessions that have started at Saxmundham Primary School, with nearly 60 ladies attending the very first session! More details and photos on Page 3. It s also that time of the year when we celebrate all the hard work of our volunteers, players, coaches and umpires. This year the East Region Goalden Globes was held in conjunction with our Superleague team, Hertfordshire Mavericks at Sopwell House on Friday 16th June. It was fantastic to see so many nominees from Suffolk attend the event in Hertfordshire! A huge well done to Finborough Ladies Netball Club for winning Club of the Year (below right) and Heidi Wyncoll for winning Grassroots Coach of the Year (below left). Two very much deserved winners. Well done also to Suffolk s Phoebe Parker who won U21 Most Improved player for Mavericks and Millie Rule who won Most Improved for Year 7/8 Development Squad for Mavericks too! Well done to all the winners and nominees! Suffolk Show 2017 Page 2 The Suffolk Show was held on Wednesday 31st May and Thursday 1st June this year at the Trinity Park Show Ground in Ipswich. We were blessed this year with some gorgeous weather thankfully as we were lucky enough to have the England Netball Anywhere court, which is a portable rubber / carpet court that clicks together to make a mini-court. We had lots of visitors, young and old over the two days, playing mini High 5 games on the Wednesday and demonstrating Walking Netball with ladies from the Moreton Hall and Ipswich groups on the Thursday which attracted lots of attention. I would like to thank the following people for helping me throughout the week: Tracey Butcher - the County TSG Volunteering Lead for giving up her time on both days to chat to all the visitors, hand out flyers and bring lots of volunteers from her club, Jetts. Young Volunteers - Emily Stanton, Emily White, Emily Meekings and Becky Brinkley for running the high 5 sessions and being so hands on with all our visitors, you all did a fab job, thank you! Carla Chapman and Emily Phillips for both helping me set up and take down the court respectively and give up their free time to do so. Thanks ladies, could not have done it without you! Jan Hunt and Clair Fiddaman and family - for also assisting on the Thursday doing umpiring and general promotion and taking down of the court. Ipswich and Moreton Hall Walking Netballers - for coming along and demonstrating your skills and being fantastic ambassadors for Netball and Walking Netball.

Page 3 Saxmundham Back to Netball As affiliated members, we all know and love netball and love playing regularly but what about if there isn t any netball in your area? This was the case in Saxmundham on Suffolk s coast and it was an ideal place to launch a new Back to Netball session. I went to visit the local Primary School to check out the facilities and they only had two, mini-sized courts on their playground but they were very keen to have some netball so we ran with it and started sessions in April with nearly 60 ladies turning up to see what all the fuss was about! The numbers were great but the facility couldn t handle all these ladies and I certainly wasn t able to coach them all so we decided to split the sessions into two groups moving forward. Number continue to remain strong and more manageable and we have gone over the basics of footwork, changing direction and speed, turning in the air and shooting and have now moved on to defensive principles. We have managed to purchase two new telescopic posts, balls, ball bag and some bibs but we have also contacted local businesses and MP s for some more funding. The School has also invested painting a full size court for us to use. Long term, we believe we can easily manage a league in Saxmundham and this is something I am working with the school to deliver for the ladies in the area as there are also lots of Juniors who would be interested in playing and getting involved. If this is successful, we will have four affiliated leagues playing in Suffolk, which is great! If you are interested in joining the sessions or know someone in the area who may be interested, feel free to put them in contact with me, details of the sessions are below: Wednesday evenings, 6:30-7:30 and 7:30-8:30, 3 running until the summer holidays (mid July) at Saxmundham Primary School, Saxmundham, IP17 1XQ Was apprehensive about taking netball up again as quite a while since school, But it s a friendly and supportive group which has helped and has been great fun - Rachel Never played netball before, but I feel I have a smile on my face throughout each session. Great fun! - Dorte Haven t played since I was at school but I have really enjoyed going each week, keeping fit and having a good giggle - Debbie
