7 WHEN WE ARRIVED AT THE NEWLY OPENED NÜRBURGRING IN 1927 OUR EYES WENT WIDE. NEVER BEFORE HAD WE SEEN SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THERE WAS A ROAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EIFEL MOUNTAINS, A FULL LOOP WITH ALMOST 180 CORNERS SPREAD OVER 22 KILOMETRES. A TRACK WITH GRADIENTS THAT PUT A FIERCE STRAIN ON THE ENGINE. 8 A STORY of people, legend and motors 90 years of racing, legendary victories and historic dramas that s the story of Nürburgring. Opened in 1927 in the shadow of the more than 800-yearold Noureburg, the Nordschleife remains to this day one of the most beautiful and challenging race tracks in the world. But the story of the Ring is also about people, legend and motors. In the summer of 1925 at the heart of the Eifel mountains, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for a race track that is beyond comparison in the world of motorsport. Construction cost 14 million Reichsmark and involved up to 2,500 workers at peak times. Only two years later, the then km track hosted its first race. The Eifel Race for motorbikes (18 June) and the subsequent car race that was won by Rudolf Caracciola on 19 June 1927 went down in history as the birth of the Nürburgring. Even beyond racing, the Nordschleife became a magnet for tourist riders and carmakers test programmes from the very beginning, thanks to its demanding layout, leap hills and spectacular differences in elevation. People say it s best if it passed the Nürburgring test a slogan that can still be seen in the historic drivers paddock has always conveyed the significance the first mountain, race and test track holds for the automotive industry. 8

9 LEGEND NÜRBURGRING Following the tracks of the Silver Arrows and Formula 1 stars through the Green Hell In 1934, Mercedes added another chapter to the history of the Nürburgring. In order to comply with the newly introduced weight limit of 750 kg, the Mercedes team scraped the paint off the race cars and the celebrated Silver Arrows were born. Due to the war, racing operations were shut down in 1940 but could be resumed seven years later following the official reopening. Enthusiasm for motorsport in the Eifel region was unbroken and grew into a veritable frenzy as of 1951 when the Grand Prix of Germany of the newly founded Formula 1 series took place. Some 400,000 spectators lined the Nordschleife to witness the post-war debut of the Silver Arrows in Hell. A series of tragic accidents and ever faster cars necessitated extensive modifications in the late 1960s. Safety fences, emergency lanes and crash barriers were installed at the track, which had previously been lined only by hedges. Despite DM 17 million spent on these measures, the Formula 1 race in 1976 was the last ever on the Nordschleife. The race gained notoriety due to the tragic accident of Niki Lauda in the section between Ex-Mühle and Bergwerk. Further conversion measures shortened the infamous Eifel race track to today s km. Stars like the Argentinian world champion Juan Manuel Fangio and Jackie Stewart went after the fastest lap times on the world s most challenging stretch of tarmac, which the Brit respectfully dubbed Green 9

11 LEGEND NÜRBURGRING Grand Prix track and expansion: a turning point at the Nürburgring The construction of the Grand Prix track marked a turning point at the Nürburgring. Planned with the latest safety regulations in mind, the then km track was opened in 1984 after three years of construction. Formula 1 returned just in the same year. Beyond spectacular racing, an entirely different kind of event attracted the masses for the first time in 1985: 75,000 people cheered topclass artists from all over the world at the debut of the music festival Rock am Ring. In the slipstream of people s enthusiasm over drivers like world champion Michael Schumacher, the Nürburgring once more became a mekka for motorsports which was also reflected in the construction of modern grandstands, VIP lounges and the innovative medical centre from the mid-1990s. With the addition of the Mercedes-Benz-Arena, the new start/finish building and the media centre, the now km Grand Prix track effectively became one of the most modern race tracks in Europe. The start of construction works in 2007, designed to turn the Nürburgring into a leisure and business centre with varied experience and accommodation options, marked another step towards the future. With ring boulevard and Event- Center, presentation and event space that can be used regardless of weather conditions has been available since the opening in In addition, the ring arena offers sufficient space to hold trade fairs, congresses, product presentations and show events. At the interactive motorsport museum ring werk, visitors can get closer to the legend of the Green Hell. In combination with comfortable hotels and the familyfriendly holiday park, all of this makes today s Nürburgring a tourist and holiday destination as well as a modern business location in the midst of the unique atmosphere created by nine decades of motorsport history. 11

16 THE NORDSCHLEIFE The legendary Green Hell 20.8 kilometres, 73 corners, 300 metres difference in elevation these are figures that immediately make the hearts of racing drivers and motorsport fans beat faster. Unique thanks to its location at the heart of the Eifel region and its spectacular layout, the Nordschleife is not only the longest permanent race track in the world but also the most beautiful and notorious one. Gradients of up to 18 percent going up to Hohe Acht and slopes of up to 11 percent at the Fuchsröhre section further shape the character of the first mountain, race and test track opened in Victories like that of Rudolf Caracciola in the first Eifel Race and the birth of the Silver Arrows, as well as dramas indelibly etched into the history of motorsport laid the foundation for the legend of the Nordschleife, which Formula 1 legend Jackie Steward respectfully described as Green Hell. 6:11.13 minutes another impressive figure that is inextricably linked with the Nürburgring. The lap record on the Nordschleife, set by Stefan Bellof in 1983, has held for more than 30 years. The legendary Eifel track has long become a magnet for tourist drivers from all over the world. Every year, the Green Hell in combination with the Grand Prix track provides the setting for the spectacular ADAC Zurich 24-Hour Race and the VLN Endurance Championship. 16

17 THE GRAND PRIX TRACK The modern Formula 1 race track Since 1984, the Nürburgring has one of the safest and most modern race tracks in the world. Wide run-off areas, grandstands like the Mercedes- Arena, the start/finish building and a modern infrastructure with medical and media centres characterise today s Grand Prix track. Time and again, Formula 1 has come to the track following its opening in the Eifel mountains, and legends like Ayrton Senna, who won the opening race as an unknown newcomer, and record winner Michael Schumacher left their mark on the asphalt. With an original length of kilometres, the track was later reconstructed and expanded to kilometres and can be divided into sprint track and Müllenbach loop. With season highlights like DTM, FIA WEC and ADAC Truck Grand Prix, the Grand Prix track becomes the home of top-class motorsport events year after year. Its long version in combination with the Nordschleife makes for a total Nürburgring track length of about 25 kilometres. 17

The new online portal Green Hell Driving for tourist drivers makes it easier and more comfortable to book a lap on the legendary Nordschleife. Users only have to register once, add credit and come to the track. Tourist drivers not only benefit from the new lower prices on weekdays but can also secure bonus laps thanks to the new bonus system. Users can check their credit balance online or via app at any time, and also access information on the track and current weather conditions at the Green Hell Driving portal. Best of all: the more credit is added, the more bonus points are credited to one s account. An individual QR code provides access to the Nordschleife. On selected dates, the Grand Prix track is open for tourist rides as well. In fact, the car brands seen going on track are as varied as the nationalities of their drivers.
