Page 1 SWMMC MONTHLY July 1, Volum e 2, Issue 3 Southwest Metro Mustang Club The Twin Cities Mustang Club of America Chapter Getting Started By Pete Schmidt The past two months have been busy. We had two cruises that both had great destinations. The May 16 th All Ford Car Show was well attended with 65 cars registered. The Apple Valley Ford Powered Car show was huge as was the Back To The 50 s event. It seems that it has to rain on Saturdays, but car folks have been resilient. We made our first donation to NF Upper Midwest, and welcomed nine new members in May/June. We are getting lots of positive feedback on our car shows - which is great. Mustangs & Ponies All Mustang Show is on July 25 th (see page 6). While we have a good time at the shows, underlying the efforts are our desire to help our partner charity NF Upper Midwest. Come out and get involved, and have some fun. 12 th Annual Maruska Mustang Run - Recap On May 24th JoAnne and Paul Maruska hosted the 12 th Annual Maruska Mustang Run. The day promised to be soggy, and the on-and-off rain throughout the day did not disappoint. Despite the wet conditions, 21 ponies made their way to the Maruska s New Prague homestead for the annual run. Folks had an opportunity to get acquainted, tour Paul s shop sporting a 1970 fastback on the rotisserie, and sign the Mustang Run Banner. 2 Page 2 SWMMC Notes NF Upper Midwest Donation The SWMMC made their first donation to NF Upper Midwest. Proceeds from the May 16 th car show allowed us to donate $300 to NF Upper Midwest. I spoke with Aron Buchanan and he said the organization is grateful for our involvement. SWMMC CruiseIn to Park Tavern Members requested the club try to arrange for a second meeting a month designed for more social interaction than we get at the meetings at Apple Ford Shakopee. The initial SWMMC CruiseIn will be on July 14 th at 6:30pm. Drive over and have a burger & beer with club members. If interest remains, CruiseIns will be scheduled for August, Sept and Oct possibly at different locations if folks have some ideas of meeting places. SWMMC at Local Car Shows Members wanted to attend smaller, local shows with some SWMMC club friends. Four shows Hastings, Henderson, Victoria, Shakopee (Turtle s) have been selected as trial events. Check the calendar for dates, and times to meet SWMMC members if you attend one of the shows. Please consider attending the Shakopee car show sponsored by Turtle s Bar & Grill. Brian Turtle has been a constant supporter of the SWMMC through goodie bag and door prize items. Cruise to Lanesboro June 13 While the weather wasn t the best notice a trend for Saturdays yet? the club cruise to Lanesboro was a hit with the four members who made the trip. The drive from Hampton to Lanesboro is a windy country road through some great scenery. Lunch at Riverside on the Root was tasty by all accounts. Folks wondered downtown Lanesboro after lunch visiting novelty and antique shops. And a few snacks were found from what I was told. Gary and Judith Brauch made side trip on the way home through Harmony, MN and visited the Niagara Cave. The tour was given the thumbs up by the Brauch s. There are no speed limits on the road to success. - David W. Johnson
Page 3 Member Profile: Jason Santelli Currently being the ripe age of 41 I grew up with my father and his brother always working on cars in his 4 stall, heated, air conditioned shop (pretty big deal for mid 80 s looking back now). My dad and his crew bought, fixed, drove, flipped many cars and trucks out of this shop over the years but 3 of them stand out. A Red 1969 Mustang GT, a red Pontiac GTO and his very last one a 1970 Challenger R/T with a 383 Magnum. They stand out for different reason beyond being cool in their own right. The GTO my was full of my family when a guy speeding ran a red light on Halloween night and the car rolled two times before coming to stop upside down. My mom, sister and I were all taken to the hospital, my dad stayed behind for the cops I guess. Turns out we were all aright including the driver of the truck but you can guess the GTO was totaled! Bummer it was a beautiful car to be sure. The Challenger sticks out because my Dad sold it two weeks before I got my driver s license, yes, he did that on purpose so I could never drive it in my teenage years. He said at the time he was doing me a favor and keeping me alive, I never knew what he meant back then I was just a scrawny, pissed off teenager that thought that was horrible for him to do. I get it now he was most definitely right. And then there was the 69 Mustang, I thought that car looked amazing. I always will remember the blue air filer housing and the blaze orange sticker on it that read 289 Hi performance, think it even had checker flags on that sticker like a Vette. Not sure if that engine was stock as my dad did a lot of engine swapping but I do know the car looked amazing and it flew down the road and so was born my love of Muscle cars and Mustangs in particular. Having had kids at a fairly young age of 24, and currently having 3 altogether that dream of owning a sporty, very non-functional family car like a Mustang was on hold for quite some time turns out. After many trips to local dealerships looking at new cars and seeing what my 30K limit could buy I opted to go for a used 2013 GT/CS with a glass roof back 15 months ago. The car is high mileage for its year and being a seasonal car but overall it was in great shape and I feel in love with the options it had like the glass roof, shaker sound system, heated seats and ambient lighting even, track apps too. I have since put 12,000 miles on it in the 15 months of ownership that s with winter storage from October to April. More recently I was on a quest to get a Boss 302, one of the newer ones. So I spent a good month looking all over the country online as there just is not a lot of them available for sale due to their collectability and limited production numbers in their 2 year run in I found one and bought it sight unseen as it was out in Richmond, Virginia. The car was hauled out here and I took delivery of her just last month on May, 29 th - #445 in 2013 in race red. I can say currently owning both the Boss is an entirely different beast. Its athleticism and no holes powerband is another level, maybe even two levels above what the standard GT is. Or as I tell my friends and family kiddingly- It doesn t suck at all! (Cont d on page 4)
Page 4 Register for SWMMC Car Shows We are asking club members to register for the two remaining SWMMC car shows early. This gives us some indication of who will be attending and allows us to start planning on details that depend on group size. Of particular importance is the registration for the Mustangs and Ponies All Mustang Show at Canterbury Park. Getting a large turnout is important to cover our costs but also allows us to reserve a suitable room for our after-show banquet room. Registration forms can be found on the back the show flyers. The flyers are available through both the club web site and the shutterfly site. The forms can be given to Mark Prokop, David Kronk or Pete Schmidt. The mailing address for Mark Prokop is listed on the registration forms. If you know you will be at one or all of the shows, why not register early? You will save a few bucks and help us in planning the events. We will need help running all shows as well. Please consider contributing your time Thanks! last month and I plan to attend the Mustang and Ponies car show as well. My big vacation plan for the summer is to head out to Myrtle Beach over Mustang week (July 12 19) with the family. It s a win-win, they get away and get to see the ocean and I get that and some quality Mustang time! Life is good, fast cars make it better. Member Profile - cont d Going forward I will likely keep both this summer. However, I can foresee a day I will need to free up some cash (and space) and have to choose one. That will be hard as I love them both in different ways. One is much more techy and I love that glass roof and the other is a street legal race car. As my neighbors say 1 st world problems, I guess that sums it up. Living way up in Big Lake currently it is hard for me to attend all the happenings the SWMMC puts on (would love to be more involved). I went to Apple Valley Ford for their car show

Page 6 Mustangs & Ponies All Mustang Update Iola Old Car Show The Mustang and Ponies All Mustang Show is 24 days away. Interest has been slowly building for the show. I get an every couple days from people looking for details. A few out-of-state folks have inquired, most notably two members of Team Shelby in Illinois. Registered number of cars for the show is at about 20; we are hoping for near 150 cars at the show. Our registered banquet guests number 12 currently; we are hoping for around 50 people at the banquet. Either interest is low within the SWWMC (91 members) or a lot of people are going to commit the morning of the show depending on the weather. I had expected about 25% of the participating cars would be SWMMC members and about 80% of the banquet guests. The data says that I was far too optimistic in gauging club participation. I don t want to be a downer, but given the financial commitment made in holding the show at Canterbury Park and current committed attendance, we may experience a loss when the show is said and done. Recent Changes: - $15 registration is now available up to the day of the show; day of show registration is $25 - Car parking will be as cars arrive as opposed to by class to make registration more efficient - The goodie bag will contain a Canterbury Park Daily Double pack worth $50 in race track discounts and perks - John Clor has committed to having a Ford car poster to give away to show participants - John Clor has committed to having a special give away for banquet participants - Mark Prokop has been getting good response from SWMMC members in regards to staffing the jobs during the show Thank You! Members on the Go Dan & Lynn Nicewander will be attending the Iola Old Car Show in Iola, WI July 9-11 Jason Santelli and family will be in Myrtle Beach, SC during Mustang Week July (hopefully Jason can say hi to John Clor while at the event ) Sturgis Mustang Rally in Sturgis, SD September 1st-6th A number of members are going to the SMR this year: Jerry Fear Ray Duquenne & Lynn Nygaard Don & Liz Matzen Mark & Dawn Prokop Pete Schmidt Mike & Susan Stearns Cathy Wirta Let me know if you plan on attending. As the date draws nearer we will try to arrange a meeting of SWMMC members sometime during the week in Sturgis

Page 11 Ford Performance Shelby GT350R-C to Make IMSA Competition Debut at Watkins Glen (By Ford Performance) Competition version of Shelby GT350R features allnew 5.2-liter flat-plane crankshaft V8 created to extend on-track performance There s no mistaking the wicked sound or aggressive looks of the all-new Shelby GT350R-C that Ford announced today would see its first official track time at Watkins Glen this weekend. Ford Shelby GT350R-C, the competition version of the reincarnated icon, will compete in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, a showdown of the most popular -- and accessible -- performance cars from around the world. The GT350R production car was unveiled in January, and is one of more than 12 new vehicles Ford Performance will bring to market through Since its introduction, sports car enthusiasts have eagerly awaited the debut of a racing version. "Like so many Mustangs before it, the Shelby GT350R is a car born to race, said Dave Pericak, director, Global Ford Performance. We re taking it to the track as the GT350R-C and we re ready to see what it can do against the best competition in the world. Both production and race car versions feature the first-ever production car V8 from Ford with a flat-plane crankshaft. This unique layout -- typically reserved for the world s most exotic sports cars -- helped create the most powerful naturally aspirated engine Ford has ever produced. The race car features an adapted version of the advanced, fully independent suspension from GT350R fitted with revised spring rates and antiroll bars, lower ride height, unique track-tuned alignment settings, revised bushings and cross-axis ball joints in the front. Ford is committed to the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge and we re very happy to be campaigning its product here, said Larry Holt, team principal, Multimatic Motorsports. I feel the need for speed. - Maverick We like the endurance format, and the racing is always intense. Strategy plays a big role; the cars must be fast and reliable, and there are always at least 10 contenders running door-to-door for two and a half hours. It is the perfect home for the GT350R-C. American muscle cars have a storied history in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, and we eagerly anticipate the start of a new chapter with introduction of the Shelby GT350R-C, said Scott Atherton, president of IMSA. Mustang has earned icon status through its racing heritage going back to the competition Mustangs of the 1960s, and this new race car will undoubtedly add to the legend. Faster and faster until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death. - Hunter S. Thompson
