43rd Western Area Conference JUNE 14-18, 2017 A MIND FOR BUSINESS AND A HEART FOR SERVICE
BLACK LIVES MATTER COMMITTEE Link Mattie Peterson Compton, Chair
BLACK LIVES MATTER COMMITTEE Peter Gaines, 37 Willie Tillman, 33 Lionel Gibson, 21 Alton Sterling, 37 Philando Castile, 32 Tamir Rice, 12 Jordan Edwards, 15
Role of Black Lives Matter Committee Deliver and Sustain Transformational Programming
SMART Goals 1. Create an awareness program that integrates Black Lives Matter and Legislative Programming Collaborate with National Counterparts in creating a Black Lives Matter Toolkit
SMART Goals Serve as a catalyst to foster Chapters use of the Service Delivery Model in the development and implementation of transformational programs Programs Certification Workshop
Issued WA Black Lives Matter Resolution Black Lives Matter Resolution Whereas, the Western Area of The Links Incorporated, comprised of 59 Chapters and 2,000 members, connected in Friendship and Service, are dismayed and alarmed over the deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and the shooting of therapist Charles Kinsey; and are equally shocked and saddened by the deaths of Dallas, TX and Baton Rouge, LA police officers murdered and injured in the line of duty; and Whereas, these incidents are but the most recent in a continuing series of unwarranted shootings and murders of African American men, women and children, numbering in excess of 100 officer involved shootings across the United States in 2016 alone; and, Whereas these shootings have occurred with limited widespread public outcry, and with limited judicial redress; prompting African Americans to believe that: their lives are not valued, the Black community is excluded from legal protection of their civil rights, and their lives can be taken with impunity; and, Whereas, the Western Area of The Links, Incorporated shares in the sorrow, tears and frustration, of the Black Community, and mourns the loss of Black lives who mattered to their families, friends, community, and nation; and whose dreams, aspirations, and gifts to this nation have been have been prematurely terminated; and, Whereas, the Western Area of The Links, Incorporated shares in the sorrow of the families and communities that have been impacted by the ambush of law enforcement officers, and mourns their loss, and recognizes that Blue Lives Matter no less, nor more, than Black Lives Matter, and realize that police officers are community servants, neighbors, friends, and family members; and, Whereas, the Western Area of The Links, Incorporated advocates for restorative justice, reconciliation of law enforcement/african American community relations, mutual respect between law enforcement and the African American Community, and building and sustaining trust between the African American community and law enforcement; and, Whereas, the Western Area of The Links, Incorporated seeks to reduce implicit bias, and disparate fear of African Americans, especially disproportionate fear of African American males by all citizens, but especially by law enforcement, and; Whereas, the Western Area of The Links, Incorporated seeks to affirm the value of Black lives and respect for the dignity of all citizens; and asks that our friends, neighbors, colleagues, and fellow citizens of all races mourn with us and engage in a dialogue that will foster mutual understanding, and recognition of the humanity in each person; and Whereas, the Western Area The Links, Incorporated believes that a path to positive change and open community dialogue, can be promoted by the passage of the Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act of 2015 (LETIA) H.R. 2875, and the End Racial Profiling Act of 2015 (ERPA), H.R. 1933, S. 1056, both of which have been advocated for by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); and, Whereas, LETIA and ERPA will provide radical reform of policing practices, policies, and laws at all levels, because the current system of policing is resulting in the loss of too many lives; Now therefore be it resolved, that the Western Area of The Links, Incorporated urges all chapters, and members to support the passage of these two pieces of legislation, to contact their Congressional representatives to advocate for their passage, and to seek support of their passage in all of their spheres of influence.
