Morgan Lucas and Doug Gordon scored respective victories in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. Other victors included Rick Braun, Comp; Kyle Seipel, Super Stock; Jim Meador, Stock; Thomas Bayer, Super Comp; Kenneth Yeoman, Super Gas; Gary Thompson, Super Street; and Sean Conner, Motorcycle. Said Division 7 Director Charlie Neilson, To begin with, we were amazed with the turnout that we had 585 cars. That was a lot more than we expected, considering the threat of rain and the current state of the economy. Then, as the weekend progressed, we had some unexpected teething problems with the new LED Tree whenever the full Tree was used, which was for Stock, Super Stock, and Comp. One of the ambers would randomly flicker before the Tree was turned on, and it turned out to be a power surge problem that was eventually corrected by Compulink and Jeff Foster, who had worked on the situation from Friday on. I really have to thank all of the Division 7 racers for their patience and understanding, Neilson continued. I was really proud of how everybody kept their equipment together and helped us get through the race with a minimum amount of downtime. Lucas, who finished last season in fine style with a victory at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, his second national event triumph of the year, overwhelmed the Top Alcohol Dragster field on race day with three sizzling runs that ranged from a low e.t. of the meet to a After qualifying third with a 5.425, Lucas stepped up with his devastating 5.39 to defeat Tony Meredyk s Lucas then demoralized Darren Nicholson in the semi s, 5.44 to 5.77, to earn his final-round showdown against Chris Demke, who was running strong numbers as well with winning times of 5.45 and But Demke slowed to a 5.63 at only 208 mph in the final, and Lucas won going away with a 5.47 at Defending Division 7 champion Duane Shields, who won last year s season opener in Phoenix, qualified to page 3

3 Lucas proved to be unstoppable during Top Alcohol Dragster eliminations as he defeated Chris Demke in the final, 5.473, to a slowing 5.633, In the first round, Lucas set low e.t. and top speed of the meet, 5.390, from page 1 No. 1 with a but was upset in the first round by Howard Haight, 5.88 to Gordon s Top Alcohol Funny Car victory came at the expense of No. 1 qualifier Bucky Austin in the final. Braun, who was winless in Division 7 Comp action last year, got off to a much better start this season with his final-round triumph over Joe Mozeris. In the showdown, Braun s B/EA 01 Firebird overcame the.048 to.163 starting-line advantage of Mozeris B/ED to win with a.527-under against Mozeris on the 7.50 index. Braun advanced to the final with a.393-under victory over No. 1 qualifier Frank Aragona Jr. s F/EA, which slowed to an on his 9.00 index, and Mozeris easily defeated Steve Wilmoth s slowing C/SR 34 Chevy with a.082-over in the other semifinal-round contest. Multi-time national event winner Seipel drove his SS/AM 89 Camaro to a doublebreakout victory over Tibor Kadar s GT/HA 92 Firebird in the Super Stock final with a.021-under to a.22-under for Kadar. Seipel had a safe.070 light in the final, but that may have been because of his too-close-for-comfort.000 light in the quarterfinals and his.004 reaction time in the semi s. Seipel, who finished just four points out of first place in last year s Division 7 Super Stock standings, combined his.004 light with a.01-over in the semi s to defeat the highly regarded SS/IA 69 Camaro of Dan Fletcher, which was.022-under with a Meador put together a near-perfect package with his D/SA 67 Camaro to win the Stock final over Curtis Coulter s D/S 69 Mercury. Meador s.004 light and.002- under got the nod in the double-breakout decision against Coulter s.013 bulb and.011-under Meador advanced to the final with a bye run while Coulter ruined Seipel s chances of a double by defeating the Super Stock winner s C/FIA 98 Firebird in the other half of the semi s with a.046-over to a.032- over The difference in the contest was Coulter s.017 light against Seipel s tardy reaction time of.121. Bayer, who finished fifth in last year s Super Comp points chase, claimed his victory by stopping Todd Bartone in a holeshot-aided final, to Bayer had moved into the final with a solo pass in the quarterfinals after Kyle Rizzoli s entry was knocked out by breakage and a bye in the semi s. Yeoman s 91 Daytona prevailed over Kevin Kleineweber s 00 Corvette in the double-breakout Super Gas final, to 9.879, with Yeoman s.023 to.027 starting-line advantage proving decisive. In the Super Street final, Gary Thompson s 86 Corvette handily defeated Rodger Sauder s 72 Cuda with a Sauder, who had a.025 to.043 holeshot, could not run his number with an on the index. Conner triumphed once again in Motorcycle eliminations as final-round opponent Leo Shaver s Kawasaki Ninja fouled with a light. Conner s winning time with his 98 Koenig Kawasaki was a.012-under Mike Ferderer (Super Gas) and Timothy Richards (Super Comp) earned their Perfectly Strange awards by running exactly on their respective indexes during the weekend. Gordon took the Top Alcohol Funny Car crown in his 02 Camaro with a 5.774, when final-round opponent Bucky Austin s 02 Firebird slowed to a 7.261, Austin had the dominant car to that point, having qualified No. 1 with a and setting low e.t. and top speed with a 5.600, in round one.

4 Famoso Raceway management begins improvement program BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Famed Famoso Raceway, which attracts thousands of people annually, is undergoing the most ambitious rebuilding project in its history. Track operator Jack Williams and the father-son management team of John and Blake Bowser are already deep into the first stage of a three-tiered program of upgrades that will make Famoso Raceway one of the premier purpose-built drag racing facilities in the Pacific Division. Already completed are new concrete guardwalls, turnout gate, and adjacent turnout road. In addition, the asphalt racing surface has been reground from the transition to the finish line. The concrete guardwalls now extend beyond the finish line 330 feet as phase one of the project nears completion. The concrete will be extended down the entire length of the racetrack as part of phase two. Also part of phase two will be the repaving of the shutdown and return roads. That phase of the project will begin in the fall. An ongoing pit-area-improvement project will also begin during that phase. The third and final phase of the formal construction project will begin after the 2004 season when a new tower, concession buildings, and restrooms will be constructed. Williams said, You can simplify the project if you just think of the three steps as (phase one) concrete, (phase two) asphalt, and (phase three) sticks and boards. Blake Bowser, who among other things serves as the facility s publicity director, said, We want everyone to know that we understand many people return to Bakersfield because of its old-school charm. We will be upgrading the racing surface and other necessities, but we are going to balance the needed new items with the Woodstock-type atmosphere that makes Famoso so special. The renovation began immediately when Williams and the Bowsers, NHRA, and Kern County extended the agreement for the use of the facility for 20 years. NHRA leases the facility from the county, and Williams and his staff operate the facility in a sublease agreement with NHRA. Williams and the Bowsers resources are making the renovations possible. As soon as we knew everything was signed, we started unbolting the old guardrail. We want to thank NHRA for the support and the expertise that they are lending to the project, said Williams. Now that we know there is a long-term future for the racetrack, we are all working together to make it the best racing facility possible. The project has been broken up into the three phases to ensure uninterrupted race seasons this year and in That includes the Goodguys March Meet and NHRA s California Hot Rod Reunion presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California in October two nostalgia-type events that have become the most successful of their type in the country. The new lease agreements and the facility upgrades ensure a long and secure future for those vintage car events. If there is such a thing, I guess Famoso has to be considered a nostalgia racetrack, said Williams. We don t want to mess that up, but we want to run all types of cars. Toward that goal, Famoso Raceway has scheduled a big Pacific Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event May Also on tap are the regular Summit Racing Series events and a very strong NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League program. The Pacific Division Jr. Series will be at Famoso June 1. Famoso is also now running extremely successful Street Legal events. With Famoso s management dedicated to upgrading the facility, the track that once served as the battlefield for some of drag racing s legendary Top Fuel wars will continue, maintaining its status as one of the legendary racetracks of all time. 5 Korbel Super Eliminator Series Hills wins first title to open series FIREBIRD INT L RACEWAY, Chandler, Ariz. (March 2) Carolyn Hills of Gilbert, Ariz., won her first Korbel Super Eliminator Series event when she drove her Hon-Dah Resort & Casino sponsored dragster to a final-round victory. She defeated Hans Scheibe in the title bout. Hills, whose husband, Denny, won the Korbel Super Eliminator title in Pomona last year, defeated Dan Dickey in round one. She then used a.008 reaction time and a on the 7.90 index to stop John Richardson in round two. In the quarterfinals, she ran right on the index to beat Tom Koenen, who lost with a In the semifinals, she defeated Del Cox, 8.03, 167 (.025 reaction time) to 8.05, 175 (.017 reaction time). Scheibe advanced to the final with a firstround win over Jeff Murdock, then defeated top qualifier Darin Dolezal and his Pontiac in the next match. He faced Bill Webber in the quarterfinals and won on a 7.91, 162 (.023 reaction time) to 7.95, 178 (.004 reaction time) count. He had a bye in the semifinals.
