4 04 Preview Rally Argentina: a home away from home A classic rally, putting both man and machine to the test: Volkswagen lines up at the Rally Argentina with its sights set firmly on victory. Defending champions and World Championship leaders Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F), their Volkswagen teammates Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) currently second in the overall standings and Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN) face kilometres of special stage at the fifth round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The Polo R WRC must conquer changes in elevation of over 1,500 metres, vast stretches of coarse gravel, water crossings, and numerous winding sections. The three works duos are certainly not lacking motivation, and will be cheered on frenetically by the thousands of fans lining the

5 FIA World Rally Championship special stages. The Rally Argentina is one of the highlights of the World Rally Championship, said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. There may not be so many special stages, but they are very long, with big changes in elevation, winding sections, gravel, and water crossings the drivers, co-drivers and World Rally Cars will need to be at their very best again. We have achieved a lot this season, which has led many to view us as favourites. However, when you pull up at the start of the first special stage, everyone starts from scratch. Only those who keep their concentration throughout all three days of the rally and make the fewest mistakes will stand a chance of winning. That goes for the drivers and engineers. There is no question about it: we want to win. However, we are also well aware that there are no gifts in sport. We are looking forward to the coming challenge. Two s company, three s a party: rally fever hits Argentina The Rally Argentina attracts huge numbers of fans to the area around Córdoba, the second-largest city in Argentina, every year. And wherever there are more than two Argentinians in one place, you can guarantee there will be a barbecue. For the drivers and co-drivers in the World Rally Championship, this gener ates a unique atmosphere, akin to a huge fair. Spectators pack the route along the special stages, desperate to spur their stars on to produce their very best. For the first time for almost a decade, a new winner will be crowned: none of the WRC drivers starting the event in 2014 have won the Rally Argentina in the past. Only one person knows how it feels to stand on the very top step of the podium in Argentina: Mikko Markkula, co-driver of Volkswagen driver Andreas Mikkelsen. Markkula won the 2010 Rally Argentina alongside Juho Hänninen in a Škoda Fabia Super 2000.

6 06 Technology More dynamic than ever: the Polo R WRC The championship-winning car is now even better: the Polo R WRC for the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) is primed and ready for the challenges ahead. Ahead of its second season at the pinnacle of international rallying, Volkswagen has made detailed improvements to its World Champion. The works team commences the defence of its title with a 315-hp World Rally Car, which has been the subject of constant further development since making its debut almost twelve months ago. The four wheel-drive powerhouse won ten of the 13 rallies last season, ensuring all three World Championship titles headed to Wolfsburg. Technical fine-tuning and a new design Volkswagen and the other manufacturers in the World Rally Championship agreed last year that they would not line up

7 FIA World Rally Championship 07 with any newly developed World Rally Cars in As such, the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer will use the same chassis that proved so successful throughout the 2013 season. This meant it was only possible to make limited modifications to the Polo R WRC. Despite this, many details have been fine-tuned on the 2014 model a car that is more powerful than the one, with which the team made its WRC debut twelve months ago. As well as the new design, the World Rally Car from Wolfsburg has also been honed under the bonnet. Besides optimising chassis components and new set-up variants for the drive train, the priority for the engineers was to improve the stability of the car. An improved software version will also be used for the on-board electronics in If you don t go forwards, you go backwards We line up with the number 1 on a Polo R WRC this season, said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. That honour is reserved for the World Champion, and is something we are very proud of. However, that does not mean that we will be presumptuous or complacent at the rallies. We will approach the task in hand with the greatest respect, maximum concen tration and absolute commitment. If you don t go forwards, you go backwards. It is easier to win a World Championship title than it is to successfully defend it, Capito explained. But precisely that is our goal. Each rally will give us an indication of how we compare to the new and new-look opposition. We are looking forward to it.

20 20 Rally information Rally Argentina Facts and figures The event The Rally Argentina was first held in 1980 and has been part of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) every year except 1982, 1995 and entries have been received, compared with 34 last year. The venue The Rally Argentina is set in the surroundings of Villa Carlos Paz in Córdoba Province. It consists of narrow gravel roads best known for their soft and sandy surface and their water-splashes. The total distance of the rally is 1, kilometres, whereby the teams are timed over kilometres. The rally will be run in autumn. This season, in Córdoba, usually offers pleasant temperatures at midday and early afternoon and rather cool temperatures during the rest of the day, and cold nights. The average temperature: 16 C.

21 Rally Argentina 21 The route 2014 will mark the 34th running of the Rally Argentina. This year s route of the rally will be very similar to last year s edition. While ten of the 14 stages are exactly the same as in 2013, San Augustín Villa del Dique and Giulio Césare Mina Clavero were slightly changed. The former features parts of the 2012 route, the latter entails roads that were last used in Food & drink Besides many of the pasta, sausage and dessert dishes common to continental Europe, Argentines enjoy a wide variety of Indigenous and Criollo creations, which include empanadas (a stuffed pastry), locro (a mixture of corn, beans, meat, bacon, onion, and gourd), humitas and yerba mate, all originally indigen ous Amerindian staples, the latter considered Argentina s national beverage. Argentines have the highest consumption of red meat in the world. The Argentine wine industry is among the largest outside Europe. Speed limit The speed limit in towns varies between 40 and 60 kilometres per hour. Highway speed is limited to 110 kilometres per hour, on motorways the speed limit is 130 kilometres per hour (100 km/h in Buenos Aires). It is compulsory to have dipped headlights on when driving through motorways and routes. Seat belts are compulsory. Tolls are charged on many motorways in Argentina. Tolls must be paid in cash and only the local currency Pesos is accepted.

22 22 Rally history Rally Argentina History At a glance The most successful duo at the Rally Argentina are Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena (F/MC). The nine-time World Champions won every WRC event in Argentina from 2005 to 2013 (eight victories). At last year s Rally Argentina, Sébastien Loeb celebrated his 78th and final WRC victory of his career in spite of Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) and Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) winning ten of the 14 stages. New winner guaranteed: none of the drivers entered for this year s Rally Argentina have won the South American event.

23 Rally Argentina 23 The Rally Argentina was first run in 1980, in Tucumán Province and organized by the Automovil Club Argentino. The winners of that first edition were Walter Röhrl/Christian Geistdörfer (D/D) in a Fiat 131 Abarth. The current President of the Fédération Internationale de l Automobile (FIA), Jean Todt, won the Rally Argentina in 1981 as the co-driver of his French compatriot Guy Fréquelin in a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. In 1983 the rally was moved to San Carlos de Bariloche, but in 1984 the event was moved to the Córdoba Province, where it has been held ever since. In 2010, the Rally Argentina was not part of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The event was run as part of the International Rally Challenge (IRC) instead. Volkswagen s Mikko Markkula (FIN) stood on the top step of the podium that year. Andreas Mikkelsen s (N) co-driver was calling the pace notes for Juho Hänninen (FIN) in a Škoda Fabia Super 2000 back then. The Volkswagen Group brand Audi celebrated two wins at the Rally Argentina in the eighties. Hannu Mikkola/Arne Hertz (FIN/S) won in 1983, Stig Blomqvist/Björn Cederberg (S/S) won in 1984 for the brand from Ingolstadt. Volkswagen team member Luís Moya (E) won the Rally Argentina twice: in 1991 and in 2002 both times as the co-driver of Carlos Sainz (E).

30 30 Engagements Typical Volkswagen The World Rally Championship commitment sees Volkswagen come full circle: the FIA World Rally Championship is the most important and highest-ranked racing series, in which production-based cars are used. Maintaining a close association with production products has always been an integral part of Volkswagen s motorsport strategy: in the 1970s, the Scirocco Cup caused quite a stir with the use of identical one-make cars. For years, this innovative concept has been regarded as being typical Volkswagen. Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup: exhilarating racing Pure racing with a green heart: the cars drive train is powered by bio natural gas, thus reducing total CO 2 emissions resulting from racing and logistics by 80 per cent otherwise unheard of in the world of motor racing. Innovative concepts such as the push-to-pass

31 Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen brand 31 system, with which, at the push of a button, the drivers can call on an extra 50 hp for a short period, help produce exciting races and a tactical element previously lacking from one-make racing series. Success bred through tradition: Volkswagen and Formula 3 Motorsport legends like Michael Schumacher and Tom Kristensen all took their first steps towards Formula One, Le Mans and the DTM in Formula 3 and powered by Volkswagen to boot. In 2014, the demand for the powerful engine from Wolfsburg is as great as ever: in keeping with the manufacturer s tradition, Volkswagen is continuing in its role of engine supplier to the most important junior, single-seater series in the world. Many teams use Volkswagen engines in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and the German Formula 3 Cup. In 2013, in the British Formula 3 Championship Jordan King has given Volkswagen its fifth consecutive title. Volkswagen also plays a key role at Formula 3 Grands Prix: eight victories at the Macau Grand Prix between 1984 and 2012 make Volkswagen the most successful engine manufacturer at the legendary street race in the gambler s paradise.

34 34 Production car WRC allure transferred to production The Polo R WRC sees Volkswagen introduce the flair of this absorbing motorsport to the everyday automotive world. At the same time, the company is also adding a new high-performance variant to the portfolio of the successful compact model, which ranges from the Polo BlueMotion to the Polo GTI. With only 2,500 limited editions being produced, the powerhouse went on offer for advanced sale on 11 December 2012 at a price of 33,900 Euros. The Polo R WRC reflects the dynamic character of its namesake the Polo R WRC, with which Volkswagen won the drivers, co-drivers and the manufacturers classifications at the 2013 World Rally Championship. A 2.0-litre TSI engine produ cing 162 kw/220 hp ensures the road-going version boasts an extremely sporty driving performance, tailored to the design

35 Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen brand 35 of the car: the Polo R WRC has a top speed of 243 km/h and acceler ates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. With its white paint job, the blue/grey stripe and WRC-style bumper, the Polo R WRC forms the bridge between the street car and the rally car driven by Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala. The 18-inch alloy wheels ( Cagliari type) in the star design are based on the wheels on the rally car; together with tyres from the 215/35 R 18 format, they underline the self-assured appearance of the Polo R WRC. The sports chassis guaran tees that the handling lives up to the rest of the car, standard bi-xenon headlamps turn night into day. 350 Nm ensure a broad torque curve The dynamic exterior of the Polo R WRC, which is available exclusively as a two-door model, is complemented by a suitably impressive drive train: instead of the 1.8-litre engine in the Polo GTI, which produces 132 kw/180 hp, the power on the front axle of the Polo R WRC is generated by a 162-kW/220-hp, 2.0- litre TSI engine. The maximum 350 Nm of torque produced by the turbo direct injection engine (Polo GTI: 250 Nm) vouch for an even broader torque curve and, accordingly, a more efficient stroke. The interior is also brimming with authentic motorsport flair including features like racing seats with WRC-specific covers, an Alcantara, multifunctional steering wheel, a black roof liner, and aluminium-style pedals. The special equipment on the production version also includes a centre arm rest (front), cruise control, light and rain sensors, a winter package, Climatronic (climate control), an anti-theft alarm system, head airbags, and a radio/navigation unit.
