3 LIMITED WARRANTY To the original purchaser of this RaceAmerica product, RaceAmerica warrants the product to be in good working order for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of purchase from RaceAmerica or an authorized RaceAmerica distributor. Should this product malfunction during the warranty period, RaceAmerica will, at its option, repair or replace it at no charge, provided the product has not been subjected to misuse, abuse, or alterations, modifications, and/or repairs not authorized by RaceAmerica. Any product requiring Limited Warranty service during the warranty period should be returned to RaceAmerica with proof of purchase. If return of merchandise is by mail or common carrier, the customer agrees to insure the product, prepay shipping charges, and ship the product to RaceAmerica, Inc. for service. ALL EXPRESSED AND IMPLIED WARRANTIES FOR THIS PRODUCT ARE LIMITED IN DURATION TO THE ABOVE NINETY DAY PERIOD. 4 PRODUCT OVERVIEW RaceAmerica Drag Race Scoreboards are a microprocessor controlled system based upon the 7-segment format display digit using the latest technology Ultra-Bright LEDs. The scoreboard uses a hardwired or wireless serial link (RS422/ RS485) to receive data to be displayed. Each scoreboard contains its own CPU chip to analyze the data string received and correctly display the desired race results (e.g. left/right lane, top/bottom position). Scoreboards can display race results and a test pattern from Portatree Silver & Gold timing system. ET, Speed and Dial-ins, etc. are controlled by the Portatree Professional software. Scoreboards are available in single or dual line formats in fifteen and twenty-four inch digit heights for viewing up to 1000 ft away. Each scoreboard unit is configured using two sets of DIP switches located on the rear of each scoreboard near the power input. NOTE: THESE PRODUCTS USE ULTRA- BRIGHT LED TECHNOLOGY. DUE TO THE BRIGHTNESS LEVEL OF THIS DISPLAY, CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN, AS WITH ANY BRIGHT LIGHTING SOURCE,TO AVOID PROLONGED VIEWING AT CLOSE RANGE AND SHORT DISTANCES. AS WITH ANY BRIGHT LIGHTING SOURCE, VISION MAY BE AFFECTED SHORT TERM SIMILAR TO CAMERA FLASHES. SCOREBOARD SET-UP STEP 1 - Mount the scoreboard Each scoreboard model and race track have unique requirements. 3/8-16 PEM nuts are integrated into the rear of each scoreboard for mounting to rigid structure. RaceAmerica Drag Racing Scoreboards STEP 2 - Configure the scoreboard The scoreboards ship from the factory with the most common selections enabled. Two banks of DIP switches, S1 and S2, are located on the rear of each scoreboard. See DIP switch definitions to change scoreboard positions. NOTE: IF DIP SWITCH NUMBER 1 OF BANK S1 IS SET TO OFF DURING THE POWER UP SELF-TEST, THE DISPLAY WILL CONTINUOUSLY LOOP ON THE SELF-TEST UNTIL SWITCH NUMBER 1 IS SET TO THE ON POSITION. STEP 3 - Connect the interface Fifteen and twenty-four inch models receive scoreboard data via an internal wireless data link. An external USB Wireless Unit models 4520U/4620U or an external RS422/RS485 Wireless Unit models 4520A/4620A is connected to the PC running the Portatree software. When a 4520A/4620A is used, the interconnect cable connects to the existing RS422/ RS485 Portatree link per the following cable pinouts at the RS422/RS485 end: Wire Pin# Color Function 8 wht/blu Ground 7 blu Ground 6 wht/brn Not connected 5 brn Not connected 4 wht/grn RS422/RS485+ (positive) 3 grn RS422/RS485- (negative) 2 wht/org Ground 1 org Ground The scoreboards are configured in the Portatree PC software using the RS485 Network Set-up screen and the RS485 Scoreboard set-up screen as shown in Fig 1 and Fig 2. NOTE: If either of these screens are grayed out, the proper Portatree software drivers may not missing or 4

5 be properly installed in your computer. Contact Portatree for their driver software. RaceAmerica Drag Racing Scoreboards STEP 4 - Install the Wireless Unit To install the scoreboard communications hardware, plug the 4520U or 4620U Wireless Data Comm Link into an available USB port on the PC. Note the yellow and green LEDs on the wireless unit are illuminated half bright. This indicates the drivers are not fully installed to activate the wireless unit. Depending on which version of Windows OS, the hardware may automatically be installed or Windows may prompt for driver location. If prompted, cancel the request. To install the drivers properly, follow the instructions in the appropriate PDF located on our website at click the DOWNLOAD tab, then click on UTILITY SOFTWARE: installxp.pdf installvista.pdf installsystem7.pdf While on the RaceAmerica website, also download the FTDI.ZIP file containing the required drivers noted in the PDF install files. Once the drivers have been installed a second time, note the red LED on the wireless unit is illuminated and the yellow and green are no longer illuminated. This indicates the wireless unit is properly installed. If the yellow and green LEDs remain illuminated, re-install the wireless unit by unplugging the USB cable, wait 5 seconds, then plug in the USB cable and the Windows OS will begin the new hardware detection process. NOTE: once a PC USB port has been configured for the wireless unit, insure the same port is always used to connect to the wireless unit otherwise the Windows OS will detect new hardware on a different port and start the driver install process again for that port. The COM port number is then entered into the Portatree RS485 Network screen as RS485 Com Port. STEP 5 - Connect the power Figure 1 - Network Setup Power is supplied to each scoreboard unit through the DC POWER INPUT connector located on the rear of the display. Connecting power to the display will set the display into a power-up self-test mode. Once the self-test has succesfully completed, the display is ready for use. Figure 2 - Scoreboard Set-up 5

6 POWER-ON SELF-TEST RaceAmerica Drag Racing Scoreboards When the power source is connected, each scoreboard begins an internal self-test and external visual check of the display elements. The self-test begins by stepping through each segment of all digits, one segment at a time including the colon or decimal points. The selftest continues by sequentially illuminating each segment until all segments, colons, and decimal points are on. Next the configured scoreboard unit address is displayed in the leftmost digit along with the rev level of the scoreboard. Confirm the address matches the entry in the RS485 Netork screen. When the internal self-test and external visual test is complete, [ready ] is displayed and the scoreboard is now ready for use. SCOREBOARD OPERATION Scoreboard operation is controlled by output from the Portatree Professional software. Each scoreboard unit is set to an address representing a position (eg. Top/Bottom and Left/Right) and will display the race results sent by the timing system to the selected position. See DIP switch settings for the desired race results display. 6

7 POWER CONNECTIONS Power is supplied through the POWER INPUT box located on the backside bottom left rear corner. Models are available powered by either 110VAC/230VAC or 12VDC or 24VDC. Remove the Power Box cover plate located at the lower right corner, rear of the enclosure to expose the Power Box (Figure 3). Loosen the RaceAmerica Drag Racing Scoreboards four corner screws to expose the terminal strip connections (Figure 4). DC power is connected to the terminal strip for 12VDC powered equipment and 24VDC powered equipment (Figure 5). Connect thedc power cable to the plus and minus terminals through the watertight compression gland and tighten the gland.. An external chassis ground connection is provided and should be connected to a grounded wire for permanent installations. AC power can be connected with an AC power cord using the watertight compression gland shown in Figure 6a using a standard 3-conductor power cord. L = live or hot side of AC power N = neutral side of AC power G = ground lead of AC power Power can also be conduit connected by installing a 1/2in (Figure 6b) or 3/4 (Figure 6c) by removing the compression gland. The 3/4 conduit fixture is connected to the matching hole in the cabinet metal. The compression gland can remain in place to provide a watertight connection. 13 WIRELESS DIAGRAM FOR 15/24in MODELS RaceAmerica Drag Racing Scoreboards The Left and Right Scoreboards are connected to the Portatree Gold/Silver system wirelessly. 1. Connect the RS422/RS485 cable part number between the Wireless Link Transceiver and the existing Portatree SMartswitch RS422/RS485 data link.(see cable wiring under SCOREBOARD SET-UP - STEP 3). 14 SCOREBOARD MAINTENANCE RaceAmerica Drag Racing Scoreboards The drag racing Scoreboards do not require any maintenance to maintain proper operation. If the scoreboard is to be used in rainy or wet conditions, it is suggested to protect the back panel from direct moisture by shielding the connection to power and the serial port. To clean the red lens, use a non-abrasive cleaner with a soft cloth. This will keep the protective lens clean and maximize visibility and clarity of the digits. If the red lens is soiled with mud or dirt, gently remove the grit using a soft cloth/water being careful not to press when wiping to avoid scratching the red lens acrylic material.
