PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Today I travel to Silverstone to support the launch of Formula Vintage with an evening briefing. This year marks two significant anniversaries for the VSCC. 80 years ago on 10 July 1937 we ran our first ever race meeting at Donington Park and 10 years later on 13 July 1947 we co-hosted the first Post-WW2 Race Meeting at Gransden Lodge. The VSCC has been involved with Pre-war Club Racing from the beginning and we continue to give pleasure to a large number of Competitors and Spectators. However the Historic motorsport scene has changed and there are plenty of high profile commercial events that give owners great choice. We need to carefully manage our racing which has always been at the heart of the Club. The background to the Formula Vintage tagline is to give a title to our racing programme which will hopefully appeal to a wider audience of motoring enthusiasts. Over the last few years we have experimented with the introduction of invited grids and the results have been encouraging. Most VSCC Members have enjoyed seeing some different cars and critically some of the supporters of the invited cars have viewed vintage racing for the first time. Our Racing Sets will be at the centre of our events and all of the Trophy races will be maintained. Marque races have been a part of our scene for many years and in addition to the Nash Race and Riley Handicap we will continue to encourage other makes to provide grids. We need to cater for families who come to our events by providing more off-track activity, circuit owners are very conscious of this requirement and we are working closely with them. AutoSolo has proved popular in 2016 and we are keen to promote this form of competition alongside our racing. The Drivers Club was well received in 2016 and we intend to consolidate this feature during A dedicated Media Centre will form part of our regular circuit facility together with a Members Lounge. All of these changes are designed to safeguard credit: Geoff Smith our Racing activities for the clubman, attract more people to our events and continue to value and promote the unique features of the VSCC. Curborough is only 9 days away and as you see from the picture EMK is still in pieces. For many of us the preparation and development is a vital part of the enjoyment of owning and racing our cars. Looking at the entry I see that my handicap is tight compared to some younger faster Members who have enjoyed great success last season, my age allowance would not appear to have been included! Look out for Louis Parkin making his competition debut in Simon Blakeney-Edward s Austin 7. Another generation from a great VSCC family continuing the tradition. Enjoy your VSCC participation over the next month in whatever form takes your fancy. I look forward to meeting you out and about. Geoff Smith 10

NEWS & VIEWS FROM THE OLD POST OFFICE Dear Club Members, I hope that you had a very enjoyable and relaxing Easter and had the opportunity to spend some special time with family and friends. Before the Easter break we held the AGM Weekend, returning for a second year to the Hilton Hotel Warwick where we were made to feel very welcome. At the Awards Dinner on the Friday evening our principal guests were Rob Jones, the Chief Executive from the MSA, and David Whale the Chairman of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs. The following morning, we held the Annual General Meeting which included the passing of the Presidential Baton from Tim Kneller to Geoff Smith. The minutes from the AGM and the notes of the informal discussions which followed are included in this Newsletter. In the afternoon, we held the Marshals Forum, followed that evening by the Marshals Dinner where our guest of honour and after dinner speaker was Stuart Rolt. Both evenings were supremely compered by Club favourite Ian Titchmarsh. Our thanks to all the Members and Marshals who supported the weekend I sincerely hope you enjoyed your time with us. Finally, a huge thank you to my team from The Old Post Office who worked tirelessly to ensure that everything ran according to plan. Since my last note for the Newsletter we have held a couple more Trials firstly the 2 day Herefordshire Trial in remarkably dry but still challenging conditions and then a few weeks later the Scottish Trial which enjoyed some very fine weather. In-between these events the LC&ES held their ever-popular Welsh Weekend and so there has been plenty of opportunity to compete - despite it still being very early in the season. Our thanks go to Mark Garfitt and his local team of organisers for another excellent Herefordshire Trial and to Jock Mackinnon and his local team for continuing to ensure that the VSCC remains active in appropriate style North of the Borders. By the time you have received this Newsletter the Race and Speed season will already have begun in earnest. These events are so very important to the Club, but carry a high financial risk and the support of VSCC Members can make all the difference. Therefore, if you can attend any of these forthcoming events please do so and remember to buy your tickets in advance otherwise the Club does not benefit from your support. As I am sure you will be aware the next anniversary celebrations will be in This is an enormous undertaking every 5 years and thus planning has to start very early. Accordingly. a small Working Group was set-up last year to consider the options for 2019 and subsequently present a proposal to the VSCC Committee for consideration. The proposal considered and approved in principle by Committee in March was based on the following: Preliminary talks were held with MSV resulting in the Working Group subsequently visiting Brands Hatch to consider the pros and cons of holding the 85 th Anniversary at one of the world's most iconic motor sport venues. The first consideration was the location and road access. Whilst the M25 can be challenging at the best of times, there are other (albeit longer) routes more suitable to vintage cars and this would form part of a Concentration Run to kick off proceedings. Also, the time of day for arrival and departure will have a significant impact on how busy the roads are and we will plan accordingly. Furthermore, the 11

celebrations will be held in the holiday season when traffic on the major routes can be a little lighter. The other main consideration is whether we have sufficient local Members to help with the organisation. We presently have just over 1750 Members who live within a 50-mile radius of Brands Hatch and so this should not be a critical issue. Turning to the positives, the Circuit offers on-site camping, hotel accommodation at the entrance and also close-by, security, an on-site restaurant and bar, office accommodation, space for Non-Speed events, go-karting, Young Drive, M4 driving experiences etc and Gala Dinner in the MSV HQ with roof terrace. As the garden of England Kent has much to offer which could include trips to London (theatre nights etc), runs to the coast, as well as Leeds Castle and much more. We could hold a Sprint at Lydden Hill and the ace in the pack is the opportunity to hold a Race Meeting at Brands Hatch on the final Sunday. The Race Meeting should underwrite most of the other overheads associated with the anniversary celebrations and thus mitigate the financial risk to the Club and help defray costs to the Members. The Working Group will now start to develop these plans and will be looking for volunteers to help organise events to take place over the week of celebrations in August Local knowledge will be key and so if you would like to be involved please drop me a line as we cannot do it all on our own and these are your anniversary celebrations! All the very best. THE VSCC DRIVERS CLUB The Club would like to thank Tom Hardman Ltd who will be supporting the Drivers' Club throughout the 2017 season. The VSCC Drivers Club will be back in the Paddock for all our Formula Vintage Race Meetings this year, where we will again provide every Competitor, Marshal and Official with light refreshments and a place to sit, relax and socialise with your fellow colleagues throughout the day. Over the last two years we have managed to encourage those of you who bake to bring in the most lovely selection of cakes and biscuits and we would love you to continue this tradition again this year the contestants on the Great British Bake Off are really not a patch on the Competitors of the VSCC! Any offers of practical help on the day would also much appreciated. Please contact Club Director, Jen Lees by at jen.lees@avantek.co.uk or call if you need any more details. Jen and the team look forward to welcoming you all at the first Formula Vintage event of the year at Silverstone on 22/23 April, where the Drivers Club will be open for business on both days. Please come and say hello! 12

COMMITTEE NOTES March Committee Minutes The minutes of the last meeting were approved. It was noted that the dates for Marshals training at Brooklands had yet to be confirmed. It was confirmed that the Club was in receipt of the Small Business Rate Reduction. A paper on Annual Aggregate Trophies was presented and discussed at length. It was agreed that the proposal to reduce the number of events that count towards some of the Annual Aggregate Trophies should be raised after the forthcoming AGM in the form of a presentation to the Members. It was also agreed that a presentation after the AGM should also be given on the key outcomes of the recent Membership Survey. The Secretary confirmed that Samantha Haldane had joined the Competition Department and that additional staff may be required throughout the year to help support the delivery of the forthcoming IT Project. It was noted that at the time of the meeting entries for both the High Speed Trial and Team Race were both low. Alternatives were being considered for the High Speed Trial but in the interim Directors were asked to help encourage entries for both of these grids. The rationale behind the Formula Vintage launch planned for the Friday before the first round at Silverstone was questioned as the new name for VSCC Racing had already been published in various motoring press. The Secretary reminded Committee that the launch was for the start of the VSCC Race Season, not the announcement of Formula Vintage, and formed part of the Club s renewed efforts to develop better relationships with the media and to better promote our activities to a wide market. The President added that the Club must be prepared to try different initiatives and then review the outcome. The Secretary was asked if the Club subscribed to a press cutting agency and it was confirmed that this had been considered, but at the time was not deemed to be cost effective. It was noted that reminder cards would be sent to Members yet to renew their membership. Feedback on the new and improved Membership Cards had been positive and the new format for the Annual Report and Accounts had been well received. The Secretary outlined the details of a new agreement with Porsche Centre Tewkesbury who would be supporting the Club by various means in It was suggested that Porsche might be willing to promote the VSCC in their dealer publications and the Secretary agreed to check if this would be possible. A reciprocal agreement had been reached with the BOC which would result in a VSCC banner being displayed on the hill at Prescott. Brands Hatch was revealed as the proposed venue for the 85th Anniversary celebrations to be held in August After a brief discussion on the merits of the proposal it was agreed that the proposed date and venue should be shared with the Members in the next available edition of the Newsletter. It was confirmed that VSCC addresses had been prepared for all Committee members to aid communications with the Members. The President spoke of the very sad news of the death of Derek Howard-Orchard and reminded Committee how much Derek had done for the Club. Discussion followed on the sad passing of Club Member John Surtees and how the Club might remember him. The President was concerned by the enduring problem of some Competitors safely reversing off hills on Trials and the Secretary confirmed that the Trials Sub-Committee, with the support of the Safety Working Group, had been asked to look into this matter. It was suggested that a code of practice may be required as well as Practice Hills and mentoring. The Committee agreed that on behalf of the Club the President should respond to the Government s Consultation on VNUK, after speaking with the MSA and LARA. The President had received a letter regarding Regalia and it was noted that the Club was short of volunteers for some events this year and that there was a growing concern that the hard work of these volunteers was not always properly recognised. The President Elect agreed to meet with the Regalia Team to discuss plans for the future and it was also agreed that there should be a serving Director nominated to ensure that the interests of the Club Display and Regalia were represented at Committee meetings. The Secretary confirmed that 13

the Running Order for the AGM had been sent to the Committee and invited questions. An amended copy of the proposed Directors Code of Conduct, which had been approved by the Club s Honorary Legal Advisor, had been circulated with the papers for the meeting and it was agreed that this should be issued. The Duty Director s Report from the Pomeroy Trophy was noted and it was agreed that Marshals Experience should be added to the standard template. It was asked if Club Marshals had the necessary experience to handle electric cars and this was considered doubtful and so should the occasion arise in the future it was agreed that the Club would require a robust process. The minutes from the last Safety Working Group meeting had been circulated and were noted. A paper on Honorary Membership had been circulated and was also noted. The President explained that the process for Honorary Membership had been in place for many years and had generally been satisfactory. However, it was agreed that perhaps more could be done in recognition of Members ongoing services to the Club and that this should be discussed in more detail after the AGM. There was doubt concerning the earlier proposal for a Medal of Merit. The Secretary recommended that the recipient of the Sportsmanship Trophy should in future be decided by Committee to help raise the profile of this particular award and this was agreed. 15 new Members were proposed and elected. The minutes of the last Eligibility Sub-Committee had been circulated with papers and were duly noted. The proposed review of the PVT List was discussed at length with opposing opinions raised. The Committee agreed to support the ESC planned approach, but reserved the right to review the outcome and ask for greater relaxation of the rules if that was considered appropriate. It was agreed that any final changes would need to be put before the membership for approval. The problems with the availability of 15 racing tyres was discussed and it was agreed that whilst the problem was ongoing Members would continue to be allowed to use radial tyres, but any records set would not stand whilst using these tyres. It was noted that nominations for the various MSA Specialist Committees are required by mid-june. The minutes from the last Driving Tests Sub-Committee were presented on the night and noted. It was suggested that the Club should invite one-make clubs to VSCC Rallies and noncompetitive events and it was confirmed that this already happened and should be extended where appropriate to do so. The Secretary reiterated that the glass trophies would not be continued and he presented a much-improved pewter tankard, complete with a proper Club badge, which would be rolled out immediately. It was agreed the Drivers Club had been a great success in 2016 and that the catering should continue to be a simple offering as the intention was not to replace the catering outlets at the venues. The President added that the Drivers Club has become an invaluable addition as a recognised meeting point for socialising. An update on the Club s bid for an MSA grant for training was provided. The President s three years of service was acknowledged by all and it was proposed and approved that he should become an Honorary Member of the Club. Ballard and Couper both stated that they had enjoyed their time as a Director and the President thanked them both for all of their efforts followed by a round of applause. 14

FINANCE REPORT 2017 SUMMARY BUDGET Income Budget Membership Subscriptions 432,000 Competition Income 693,219 Advertising Income 79,155 Sponsorship Revenue 50,000 Other Income 31,570 Investment Income 2,120 Total Income 1,288,064 Expenditure Budget Competition Expenditure 532,665 Membership Publications 166,900 Aministrative Expenses 522,344 VAT 49,150 Depreciation 11,484 Total Expenditure 1,282,543 Net Margin 5,521 IT Project (From Reserves) 60,000 Narrative: The above represents the 2017 Budget against which we shall measure the financial performance of the Club throughout the year. Quarterly updates will be published in the Newsletter and Committee will review performance on a monthly basis. We are working towards an increase in overall revenues as a direct result of the development of our events programme and better deals that we have negotiated with the venues and service providers. As the year progresses we will continue to invest in the Club's infrastructure and we also plan to take advantage of social media opportunities to promote the VSCC and what we do to a much wider audience. We hope that the net results of these activities will return a small surplus which will be added to the Club's Reserves. From these Reserves, we have allocated up to 60,000 to fund the long overdue overhaul of the Club's IT systems. This will deliver efficiencies in many different areas, as well as enhancing the quality of information we have access to, so that we can better the Membership experience. The VSCC website will become much more fit for purpose and an open source - rather than the somewhat closed shop it is today. One of our key challenges remains to attract the next generation of Members for which we will need to exploit social media more and more. We can only hope to achieve this if we have the right tools. 15

Ordinary Resolutions Item 1 on the Notice of the Meeting To Receive and Adopt the Directors Report and Financial Statements for the Year Ended 31 December 2016 The Chairman explained the rationale behind producing a separate Annual Report this year as a supplement to the statutory End of Year Accounts. There was general agreement from the floor that this was a very welcome addition. There were no questions raised on the Directors Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December The Chairman asked that the Directors Report and Financial Statements be adopted. This was proposed by Bogdan Wimmer, seconded by Neil Murray and all in favour. Item 2 on the Notice of the Meeting To appoint suitable auditors at a fee to be agreed by the Directors The Chairman asked that the Directors be permitted to appoint suitable Auditors for this financial year, on behalf of the Club, and explained that the level of audit may vary depending on professional advice. The Chairman reassured Members that the Committee would ensure that any revised auditing arrangements preserved an appropriate level of scrutiny so that the Club s funds continued to be properly expended and accounted for. This was agreed, proposed by Ian Ferguson, seconded by Frank Ashley and all in favour. The Chairman confirmed that there had been 40 postal ballots received in support of the two Ordinary Resolutions. There were no postal ballots against. Ordinary Business Item 3 on the Notice of the Meeting to Announce the Results of the Ballot of the Members of the Club for the Appointment of Directors in Accordance with Articles 44 and 45A of the Articles of Association The Chairman confirmed that Alan Couper was standing down from Committee, due to the 9-year rule, and presented Alan with a gift on behalf of the Members to thank him for his service to the Club. The Chairman announced the appointment of the voting scrutineers, these being: Alexandra Elliot and Tim Cork. 2 17

The results of the ballot were read out to the Meeting and were as below: Hamish McNinch 804 Tim Dutton David Swann 422 The Chairman congratulated the successful candidates and also thanked David Swann for standing for election noting that it was very important for the Club to have a democratic election. The Chairman confirmed that the new Committee would take office on cessation of the formal business at this Annual General Meeting and would meet formally for the first time at Chipping Norton on Thursday 20 April The Chairman then explained that the ballot papers would be kept at The Old Post Office for three months and, so long as there was no protest, would then be destroyed. Item 4 on the Notice of the Meeting Any Other Business Duly Notified Prior to the Meeting The Chairman announced that no other business had been notified before the meeting and so he was closing the formal part of the AGM by handing over the gavel to the new President, Geoff Smith. The new President then presented Tim Kneller with a small token of appreciation for a job well done before opening the informal question and answer session, the details of which are captured in the Notes to the AGM. D R Salmon Club Secretary 5 April 2017 Notes of the Informal Q&A Session held after the Annual General Meeting of the Vintage Sports-Car Club held at The Hilton Hotel, Warwick on Saturday 1 April 2017 Before opening the meeting up to Members for a general discussion, two short presentations were made. Firstly, Jenny Lees, as head of the Membership Working Group presented the results of the recent Membership Survey. 20% of the Membership replied to this survey and the results were very interesting. It was noted from the Survey that the Club s Pub Meets need to be better supported, attracting young Members was considered vital, the Club s publications (Newsletter and Bulletin) were highly regarded, Staff were deemed to be friendly and the Directors approachable. Overseas Members needed to be asked separately what they wanted from the VSCC as the questions in the Survey were not particularly pertinent to them. The final question in the Survey was to sum up the Club in three words and friendship, fun and competition were the most common responses, which was considered to be very encouraging and suggested more social events should be available for Members. The overall summary was that the Club had a loyal and generally satisfied membership. However, the intention was not to be complacent and further work was planned including focus groups and a review of the different types of membership. The Chairman thanked Jenny for the presentation and her hard work. David Cochrane also thanked Jenny and stated that as the Club works well at present, should we tinker with it? He also asked if the Working Group had an optimum number in mind in terms of membership and 18

remarked that bigger is not always better. Jenny stated that this will be one of the items discussed by the Working Group. Neil Murray asked what was meant by social events and the Secretary replied that it had been suggested that more events should have a stronger social aspect so that it was not all about competition. This may include a few more two day events as these allow time for more social activities. Tim Cork thanked Jenny for her hard work and reported that 145 Members had taken part in the recent Light Car & Edwardian Section Weekend and all for sheer pleasure not competition and that 290 had attended a dinner in the evening with a small Trial the next day. Tim suggested that perhaps this was the way forward. Jenny agreed that this was a very good template for the future. Andy Baker asked if 20% is a good enough response. It was explained that the response was higher than the last time the Club held a similar survey. Andy stated that the Club website was difficult to use and the Chairman confirmed that major IT work is planned and there should be a marked improvement by the end of the year. The Chairman is also aware that the Club needs to engage more in social media and the significant investment being made updating the Club s IT which support this. Philip Longhurst felt that some Pub Meets are not friendly to new Members and that it is important that newcomers are made to feel welcome. Hugh Girvan said that young people need to be encouraged and in particular Driving Tests were a good start. He informed the meeting that Jonathan Palmer holds Driving Test Courses for 11+ year olds, who obtain a certificate after passing the course and that other companies held similar courses. David Furnell said that this was a very good idea and one for the Club to promote to the Members. The second presentation was made by Tony Stephens on the overbearing demands of some of the Annual Aggregate Trophies. The issue had been brought to his attention by Club Member Colin Ayre and discussed recently at Committee, where it had been agreed to seek Members views at the AGM on the principle rather than the detail of any change. The Chairman remarked that whilst tradition was important we needed to be open to change. Tony Stephens explained that to win the Club s Annual Aggregate Trophies in the past you may have needed to compete in no more than 20 events throughout the year. However, with so many more events now on the VSCC calendar you were most likely to need to undertake almost all of the 40-plus events in order to win. This came at a significant cost in terms of both money and family commitment. One of the proposals was to consider reducing the number of events for the Aggregate Trophy scoring to a maximum of 20 across all competitive disciplines, ensuring that the winner must participate in every discipline. Marshalling should count towards the scoring. This could also enable the Club to use levers to promote specific events from one year to another depending on demand. Ron Birkett thought the idea was interesting and that it was a great idea to change the rules, adding that to include marshalling was a very good incentive. Martin Jelley said that there was a lot of merit in the suggestions and asked how many Members actually compete for the major trophies and Tony Stephens replied that there were normally only three or four contenders each year. Harvey Hine thought it was a brilliant concept and suggested a cap on entries fees. There was overwhelming agreement that this was an excellent idea. The Chairman thanked Tony for his presentation and the Members for their open feedback and confirmed that the Committee would take the matter forward. 19

The meeting was then opened up for general discussion. The Chairman asked for Members to announce both their name and subject and be succinct. Phil Diffey asked why the LC&ES events do not count towards the Rowley Trophy, particularly as the Club is trying to encourage Young Members. The Chairman thanked Phil for his question and confirmed that the Committee would look into this. With regard to younger Members (born after 1989) towing trailers, which was mentioned at last year s AGM, Andy Baker asked if a provider had been found who might be able to offer tests at a reduced rate. The Secretary confirmed that this had been investigated, but unfortunately there was no interest from companies to offer any such discounts. It was suggested that some in-house training could be offered and it was agreed that the Club would look at how and where this might be possible. Philip Longhurst suggested that the Trials season should revert to the dates previously held. Tania Brown, as head of the Trials Sub-Committee, observed that many Members approved of the change, whilst others did not. Tania explained that the Trials Sub-Committee were meeting in May and would review the matter before making a recommendation to the main Committee. Michael Billingham asked why the dress code had been relaxed for the Marshals Dinner and expressed disappointment at this decision. The Chairman explained that a number of Members had asked for the relaxation and accepted that it was one of those occasions where you could not please all the people, all the time. However, it was something that the Club would review before next year s event. Frank Ashley asked what had happened to the Flat Stone Trophy. Initially there was some uncertainty about this award, but the Editor came forward to explain that this is indeed still in circulation and awarded each year. It is now known as the Bulletin Award which would have been presented to Steve Welsh at the Marshals Dinner, but unfortunately Steve was unable to attend. Hicky Hickling suggested that Marshals who volunteer at Light Car & Edwardian Section events should be recorded by the Club. It was agreed that this would be considered. Hicky also asked if the Club is being too stringent in the handling of fluids and suggested that water should not be considered to be an offending agent. Ian Standing, as head of the Safety Working Group, stated that the Club needed to actively encourage all Competitors to improve the preparation of their cars before an event and recognise that all spillages presented a risk to others. This included water as many coolant systems had additives in the water. Peter Wigglesworth asked how successful the Club had been with DVLA applications from Members. The Chairman replied that significant work had been done in relation to this and that out of nine applications received during in 2016, only one had failed and that this remained work in progress. He added that the Eligibility Sub-Committee remained committed to continuing to help Members with cars with no recognised one make Club to obtain an age-related number, where there was a genuine case. Tim Kneller, Past President, explained that the FBHVC have had some further success with the DVLA, but that the Club still needs to be cautious. Accordingly, if Members are considering an application, it may be prudent to wait until the situation became a little clearer. Gary Clare asked if the PVT List is being reviewed and if there had been a relaxation of the three out of five rule. The Chairman explained that the Eligibility Sub-Committee was looking at the PVT List and that this tended to be a process which the Club undertook every 10 years. Recommendations would be made to the main Committee in the Summer. The Chairman confirmed that if a major change was proposed then an Extraordinary General Meeting would be called. 20

With regard to the three out of five rule, Steve Jones explained that this was widely misunderstood and often misinterpreted. It had always only been a guideline. Each and every car was considered on its overall merit and provenance. David Cochrane suggested that the Exmoor Fringe and John Harris (Derbyshire) Trials being on consecutive weekends, followed two weeks later by the Herefordshire Trial, was not ideal as there was insufficient time between the events. The Chairman agreed with David but noted that with a full calendar of events it was not always possible to avoid this. The Secretary explained that he did not like this either due to the demands on the Staff and limited time available to prepare for each event, but with 43 events a year it was often difficult to avoid. David Biggins asked if it would it be necessary for him to apply for a new MSA passport that as he already had FIA papers for his car. The Chairman queried if he was referring to the replacement for the Speed Log Book and the Secretary doubted that he would need one, but agreed to check and confirm this. Gary Clare asked about the application process and the taking of photos for the MSA Vehicle Passports and the Competition Secretary confirmed the details. He further remarked that the wording for the MSA Vehicle Passport requirement was not very clear and the Chairman said he would clarify this and put an additional note in the Newsletter. Referring back to the calendar, Hicky Hickling suggested that the Club should speak to the Hill Climb owners earlier regarding dates as many of them were already looking at dates for The Chairman explained that it was much easier for one discipline venues to set out their dates much further in advance. The wide range of VSCC events, across the UK, made this much more difficult for the Club to achieve. Notwithstanding this, the Secretary confirmed that the Club was looking at dates much earlier than had hitherto been the case. Sadie Mullard added that many of the dates could only been finalised once the F1 calendar had been announced and so it was very difficult for the Club to firm up the VSCC calendar before this. Tim Wadsworth asked why Shelsley Walsh was a two-day event in The Secretary explained that this had been at the request of the MAC who wanted to work with the Club to develop the event. It also linked in with the enhanced social aspect discussed earlier. The two-day format would be reviewed after the event and revisited if it was not a success. Tim asked if practice and competition could be held on the same day and the Secretary stated that unfortunately this would not be possible. The Chairman added that the Club needed to try different ventures and where such changes adversely impacted on particular individuals then attempts would be made to try and accommodate any special requests, but only where it was safe and practical to do so. The Chairman mentioned that the Club needs more volunteers to help with the Club Van and Regalia for events during the year and that anyone interested should contact Ian Ferguson. In his closing remarks, the Chairman remarked that he will always welcome constructive feedback and suggestions from Members Finally, Harvey Hine proposed a vote of thanks to the Committee for their hard work and wished Geoff Smith well in his tenure as President of the Club. The meeting finished at 12.15pm. 21

A Portrait of the Vintage Sports-Car Club, Written by Tom Pellow In 1934 a handful of motoring enthusiasts met to establish a club for owners of light cars of not more than 50 value and that were at least three years of age, hoping to hold Trials and other events suitable for such unassuming machinery. Eighty years later the resultant Club has grown to over 7,000 Members, its calendar of events including Race Meetings, Sprints, Hill Climbs, Trials, Navigation Rallies, Autotests and Tours, with their owners competing in such varied vehicles as Austin Sevens and ERAs together with a wide range of sporting cars built from 1905 onwards and particularly those of the 1920s and 1930s. A Portrait of the Vintage Sports-Car Club, , tells how a small body of determined and energetic individuals, united by their love of fine vehicles and motor sport, built up the Club to make it the unique and buoyant organisation that it is today. 270 page hardback with 60 photographs and 20 cartoons The book is available to buy on the Club website priced at (plus UK postage and packing 5.00) Alternatively, please complete the form below and return to Gill Batkin at the Club Office For payment by credit card / debit card please complete the boxes below: A PorTrAiT Vintage Sports-Car Club of the Thomas Pellow Expiry Date: Last three digits of security code / Printed Name: Membership No: Signature:. 32 ANNUAL TRIALS TROPHIES Results after ten events in the dual season Results include the Exmoor, John Harris (Derbyshire), Herefordshire, Scottish, Welsh, Lakeland and Cotswold Trials for 2016, and the Exmoor, John Harris (Derbyshire), and Herefordshire Trials for After the Herefordshire Trial, we come to the last event of the season, the Scottish, where the winners will be decided for both the Hagerty and the Frost Trophies. These trophies are given for a maximum of 10 events out of the Season s 11 Trials. Therefore Competitors with a current total of 10 will drop the lowest score of the season to determine their overall Trophy scores. The bonus for competing in the Scottish this year has been cut to 15. Scores going into the final event and indicating number of Trials completed, are: TRIALS TROPHIES The Hagerty Trophy The Frost Trophy 1 Donald Skelton (10) Jonathan Miller (10) Peter Kite (10) Paul Jeavons (9) Simon Price (10) John Chilman (9) David Golightly (10) John Higgs (10) Phil Longhurst (10) Roger Tolson (8) Kraig Mycock (10) Peter Garland (6) Ian Webb (9) Richard White (7) Richard Houlgate (9) Richard Edmonds (5) Stewart Rich (10) Jeremy Brewster (5) Matthew Johnston (9) David Saxl (6) Peter Tierney (10) Hamish Monro (5) Clive Press (9) Simon Bowyer (5) Alexandra Milne-Taylor (10) Jeremy Holden (5) Jon Fleming (8) Jeremy Flann (5) David Rolfe (8) Robert Hodgkinson (5) 1265 Matt Johnson did not compete in the Herefordshire, the highest scoring Trial in the competition, and thus passes the initiative to win the Hagerty Trophy to Donald Skelton. In Class 2, Jonathan Miller has competed in the full complement of ten events so would need to drop the score from one event, presumably the low scoring 2016 Scottish, unless he elects not to compete in the upcoming Scottish as an insurance that it may be high scoring. To retain the Frost Trophy, Paul Jeavons needs to ensure a good score in the Scottish. 34 34 Midlands Air Ambulance Charity s Air25 Year of Celebration Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, which covers Gloucestershire, celebrated 25 years of its lifesaving service in 2016, commemorating the Air25 anniversary year with a full schedule of events, including a Fireworks Extravaganza organised by the Cheltenham Roundtable for Bonfire Night in November. The charity, which provides a lifesaving air ambulance service to six counties including Gloucestershire, home of the Prescott Speed Hill Climb, has undertaken over 46,000 missions since 1991, including over 5,000 in Gloucestershire alone. While providing a vitally important pre-hospital service to those in urgent need of medical attention, the organisation is entirely reliant on local generous donations from members of the public, and local businesses. Susie Godwin, Gloucestershire fundraising manager for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, explains: The charity is tremendously proud of what it has achieved over the last 25 years, but none of it would have been possible without the generosity of our supporters, who we hope will continue to support us for the next 25 years. To find out more about how you can help to fund a Midlands Air Ambulance Charity mission, please visit: or call the charity on

We hope everyone enjoyed themselves on what was the only sunny day in a week of rain. THE HEREFORDSHIRE TRIAL A THANK YOU Mark Garfitt and Team would like thank all the Marshals, Officials, and the team at TOPO. A most important feature of our Trials are the radio communications set up and run by Eric Peppercorn, ably assisted by Paul Conner. The Hill Chiefs who kept the keen and enthusiastic army of Marshals on their toes, the Signing-on team, Scrutineers, Landowners, our wonderful hosts at How Caple, Roger and Vanessa Lee, Selina Lee, the maker of scrumptious bacon butties, Member Nick Vaughan and his team from Ascari s Cafe in Hereford, for that superb Saturday night Supper for 94 in the Concert Barn which is a most important feature of the whole weekend. The Results Team and, most importantly, Angela Cherrett, who so beautifully presented the Half Time results board, which, having been read to the keen recipients, was displayed in the Concert Barn during the Supper. Our three Stewards keeping an eye upon us for the whole event. Thanks and congratulations have to go to the Competitors for producing The Herefordshire Trophy winner, this year from Class 1b, David Golightly using our tiedecider. The Andrew Blakeney-Edwards Trophy (Class 2b, Paul Jeavons), not forgetting The Moffatt Mug generously presented by Bunty Moffatt (also to winner of Class 1b). Without you all we would be wasting our time. A full to overflowing entry makes it all worthwhile. The Final Results are under EVENTS, Herefordshire Trial, Results on the VSCC website. Well done and thank you everyone. I do hope you will not mind me asking for your help next year please? SCOTTISH TRIAL MARSHALS Jock and Martin would like to thank their loyal band of Marshals and Officials who helped to make the Scottish Trial such a success. 43 LIBRARY & INFORMATION RECENT ACQUISITIONS Morgan Three-Wheeler Handbook. Ford Engine Models. Although currently not VSCC-eligible, the F-type Morgan provides great vintage motoring enjoyment for many enthusiasts. This small booklet by Tony Birks manages to pack a huge amount of information into its 50 pages, and will be invaluable to any existing or prospective owner. The seven chapters cover body styles, Ford engines, transmission, brakes, suspension, steering, and electrics. Three annexes cover servicing, bearings and the E93A engine. Beautifully clear period photographs and crisp diagrams complete this splendid volume. Order your copy from Tony Birks, 16 Tamworth Road, Bedford, MK41 8QZ (tony.birks10@btinternet.com) enclosing 6.25 which includes P&P. The Rolls-Royce Armoured Car. Its Substance and its Place in History Lt Col Eric Barrass spent several decades compiling a huge quantity of information about Rolls-Royce armoured cars, and steadfastly put off the day when it would have to be organised into a book. Eliot Levin, having pestered Barrass for many years, was eventually rewarded with an invitation to start typing a manuscript (Oh yes you can. Check the dictionary) with a view to publication. After the death of Barrass in 2012, Levin completed the task and this book is the result. The content is very wide ranging, covering machine gun development, propellants, military tactics, and much more. Available from the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club for 20, it is a fascinating read. EXTRAMURAL ACTIVITIES Regular readers will be pleased to learn that your Librarians take their duties seriously, a number of us having attended the Spring Seminar of the Society of Automotive Historians in Britain (SAHB) at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon. The day started with a delightful talk by our regular visitor Jonathan Wood on his early days as a motoring journalist. The final presenter, John Harrison, is an acknowledged authority on vehicle registrations who can no doubt be of assistance to us in the future. One must confess however that his half-hour talk on Routemaster bus licence plates did strain the enthusiasm somewhat. The Librarians dressed for their outing to the SAHB Seminar 46

MSA MARSHALS UPGRADING CHECKLIST If you are thinking of upgrading to a higher grade and the Club would very much appreciate that as it helps with running Race and Speed Meetings, then this check list is how you should approach it. It might look a bit daunting but it is relatively simple and straightforward: FOR THE UPGRADING MARSHAL When was my last upgrade? Have I got the correct number of attendance signatures for the grade I am Yes/No If yes, how many? applying to upgrade to? Has the Chief Marshal of the meeting been informed I want an upgrade assessment? Yes/No If yes, when? It might look a daunting process but it is simply ensuring you have the right level of experience and if I can help you move forward please contact me. A copy of this upgrading checklist is available on the MSA website under Home/Marshals/Resource Centre. Alan Couper MSA Training Instructor Tel No (W) Tel No (H) alan.couper@btinternet.com (H) Calling All Marshals As a Club we can only offer such a broad range of multi-disciplined events throughout the year with the support of a strong and loyal band of Marshals. To maintain the excellent support the Club enjoys from volunteers we do need a steady flow of new Marshals each year. Therefore, if you can find a few spare weekends this year and would like to be more involved in any of our events or simply wish to give a little back to other Competitors please contact the Competition Department to confirm your availability. 48

MSA VEHICLE PASSPORT APPLICATION All cars competing in Hill Climbs or Sprints must be presented for scrutineering with a valid Competition Car Log Book/Vehicle Passport or an MSA Recognised Vehicle Identity Document unless the car is currently licensed for use on the public highway and is competing in a road legal condition or is currently used in circuit racing and is entered in an event on an occasional basis only. The onus of proof rests with the competitor The Competition Car Logbooks that were issued and endorsed by the VSCC will not be used any more: from now on competition vehicles in the relevant classes will need to have an MSA Vehicle Passport. Please note that these will no longer be dealt with by the VSCC office. These passports can be completed by the applicant or a scrutineer: however the vehicle must be inspected by an MSA scrutineer in all cases. You cannot complete the form yourself and send it direct to the MSA. The MSA charge for the Vehicle Passport is currently 40 (in 2016). Our VSCC scrutineering team have agreed to complete these passports at an event. Alternatively you may ask a local scrutineer to come and inspect the car elsewhere. Please bear in mind that the inspecting scrutineer may incur travel expenses in these cases. We suggest you discuss and agree any extra payment with the scrutineer before arranging their visit. The Application Form The form is available to download from the MSA website Centre/Technical-Car or can be obtained from the MSA Technical Department. You can complete the form in advance of the scrutineer s inspection if you prefer. Alternatively the scrutineer can complete the form himself at the time of or following the inspection. A scrutineer will inspect the vehicle and verify that the form contains all the relevant information. The applicant pays the scrutineer the MSA fee, which is currently 40 (in 2016). Any change to the fee will be notified in the 2017 Blue Book. The scrutineer will give you a receipt which serves as a logbook for the subsequent 30 days. Please retain this receipt as it allows you to compete in an event before the MSA return your completed Vehicle Passport. The scrutineer will send the completed form, fee and receipt to the MSA Technical Department. When you receive your completed Passport from the MSA, please ensure that you sign it. Photographs The Vehicle Passport shows three photographs of the vehicle, a front ¾ view, a rear ¾ view and a view of the engine bay. The Application Form contains examples of these photographs. The photographs can be taken by the inspecting scrutineer or the applicant. For applicants wishing to take their own photos there is some guidance available. 49

VSCC RALLY TEACH-IN Remove the Mystery of Rallying! VSCC Rallying is a tremendous way to enjoy your vintage car. Yet it seems to be surrounded by mystery and a feeling that only intellectuals can fathom the complex instructions. Come to the Rally Teach-In to remove the mystery and have the principles of Rallying broken down into straight forward language. Sunday 21 May at Cawley Hall, Luston, near Leominster, Herefordshire HR6 0DS MR.OS 149: The Club is presenting a wonderful opportunity for Members to learn about VSCC Navigational Rallies. The event takes the form of a one day, practical course, run by experienced Rallyists. The course is aimed at complete beginners, people who have done a few Rallies and Members returning to Rallying who feel rusty. Participants are promised an enjoyable day which will prepare them to enter future VSCC Rallies with confidence. If possible participants should attend in pairs (Driver and Navigator) but this is not essential, with a car (ideally the one they plan to Rally but doesn t have to be a modern car would be ok). The course will consist of theory sessions in the morning followed by a practical Navigational Run after lunch putting into practise things learnt in the morning. Participants will receive a Rally Pack containing all the notes, maps needed for the day. Tea, coffee, juice, biscuits and lunch are also included. The course will be introduced by Jenny Lees (Chair of the Rally Sub- Committee) while instruction will be from course presenters Martin Jelley (experienced Driver, Navigator and Rally Organiser) and Dood Pearce (ace Navigator and experienced Rally Organiser). The Rally Teach-In will cost per participant. For further details contact Martin Jelley on or m.jelley145@btinternet.com To book a place on the course please contact Samantha Haldane (Competition Administrator) on or samantha.haldane@vscc.co.uk 50

Steve Hughes steve@brooklandsenginecraft.co.uk Treasure Trove of Spares and Tools. I started restoring old cars when I was sixteen and have spent the last 57 years with that activity as my main hobby. I have restored Singer, AC, Lagonda, Rolls-Royce, MG, Alvis, Cadillac and Sheffield- Simplex cars and have accumulated a large-carboot-full of surplus bits; trafficators, carburettors, magnetos, fuel pumps, wipers, built-in-jacks, door furniture, etc. etc. Due to arthritis I can now only cope with restoring clocks, and I have to downsize too. So I would like to bequeath this treasure trove to someone with the same interests; free of charge, you just have to come to West Yorkshire for a cup of coffee and to collect it, but you must take all of it. I also have to dispose of a well-equipped Myford ML10 lathe on a bench, an instrumentmakers horizontal milling machine, a large anvil and stand, a grinding wheel, a lifting gantry with ¼ ton chain-block, a 3-ton trolley jack, a pair of driveup ramps, a miniature gas bottle set with regulator and torches, a mobile compressor and spray guns, an industrial upholstery sewing machine, several battery maintenance chargers, etc, etc; but for those I will need some money and therefore you may choose what you want. Come and have a coffee and a look! John Thring john@thring.co.uk 57

Power Maxed is a revolutionary new range of automotive products. Our only aim is to be the best, nothing comes before that. We have developed our products not just to be better than others but to be the best they can be. As far as we are concerned only quality counts and once you have tried Power Maxed you won t want to use anything else. When we make a product only the very best is good enough, that means we source and use the very best ingredients and then with years of experience behind us we blend them to what we believe to be the best recipe so you end up with the results you expect at a price you can afford. After all, if a product is cheap and it doesn t do the job you want it to do surely you can t get more expensive than that!? We are that confident that ours will do the job you want it to do we offer a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE on all of our products, if you are not happy with the results simply send it us back along with your receipt and we will give you your money back. Some companies go overboard on their packaging investing a lot of money to make it look nice, only for you to be disappointed with the results of the product. We have done enough to make our packaging vibrant and to stand out but again quality comes first, we use the best available trigger sprays with line and mist spray with fluorinated bottles to stop panelling (misshaping) and we know you will not be disappointed with the results of the product as that s where we would rather the money went, into making the product the very best it can be. Many of our products in the valet range are concentrated creating extreme value for money with items such as our Traffic Film Remover which you can dilute up to 50-1 so the 5L will make 250 litres of ready to use product. These products before coming to market have all been tested and used by some of the world s best race teams to make sure they live up to ours and their demanding requirements. It comes as no surprise that they always live up to expectation. So if you are looking for winning results, when nothing less than best will do, you need to look out for Power Maxed products as they re the ones for you. VSCC Members can enjoy an exclusive 20% discount off all Power Maxed products when purchased via the website above.
