Notes Statrting at No. 1: The Mesa baseball team has been ranked in the top 10 all year long, but the final poll put the T-Birds at No. 1. First Time Since 2006 This is Mesa s first apearance in the NJCAA Division II World Series since That ended a string of three straight years for MCC. Worst to First: This year has been a remarkable turn-arounf for Mesa baseball. Last season the T-Birds finished for for a.446 winning percentage. That was actually the worst record ever in MCC s 49-year baseball history. There have only even been four losing seasons Amazingly, the team s record at the start of the World Series is a.797 percentage, the best in those 49 years. Tough Conference; Great Results The Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) is annually one of the toughest in the nation and is comrise, as are many junior college leagues, of both DI and DII schools. As illustrated below, Mesa tied for the overall championship with DI Central Arizona. Cochise and South Mountain played for the Western District championship and DI World Series berth. During the regular season the T-Birds played those two teams a total of four times and won all of them. Overall, MCC had a 14-3 record in games against DI schools Honors: Five MCC players received post-season honors. Freshman pitcher Joseph Carvalho, freshman catcher Zack Soria and freshman third baseman Jordan Zimmerman all were named first team all-accac. Sophomore pitcher John Havird and sophomore outfielder Cole Loncar were chose to the second team. All five were named all-region I. Dynamic Pitching Duo: Joseph Carvalho and John Havird have given Mesa one of the best 1-2 pitching combinations in school history. Carvalho, a freshman, has gone 11-1 with a 1.38 ERA and Havird 10-1 and a 1.31 ERA. Havird s ERA is tenth best in the country and Carvalho ranks No. 14. Behind the Plate: Freshman catcher Zack Soria gives Mesa potent weapon behind the plate. He has nailed 18 of 27 would-be base stealers. Running Game: The T-Birds love to run. Their 121 stolen bases are No. 11 in the nation and they have been caught just 27 times. Freshman Alex Gudac is tied for No. 35 with 23 steals in 27 tries and sophomore Dillon Fahr is tied for 48th with 21 steals out of 25 attempts. Other National Leaders: Alex Gudac and freshman Jordan Zimmerman are tied for 23rd in the country with five triples each. The team ERA of 2.63 is No. 5. The team fielding percentage of.964 is No. 4 and the runners cuaght stealing percentage of.500 is No. 5. Storied History: Mesa has a storied baseball history. As noted above, MCC has suffered only four losing seasons in the 49 years it has been playing baseball. The program was started in 1966 by legendary college coach Jim Brock. He eventually became the coach at Arizona State and was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in He led the T-Birds to national championships in 1970 and Jim Frey took over in 1972 and won another national title. MCC and the Major Leagues: A total of 20 former Mesa players have reached the major leagues as outlined elsewhere in these notes. Dozens of others have been selected in the major league draft and over 100 are listed as having played in the minor leagues. OF 1969 Jack Collinge 2nd team IF 1968 Head Coach Tony Cirelli Tony Cirelli now in his 20th season as the T'Birds skipper. His career record stands at a very impressive His right-hand man, Recruiting Coordinator and assistant coach Doug Rose has been on board since Tom Novak, Ken Westray, Sean Kenney and David Robb serve as Cirelli's additional assistants. Originally from New York City, Coach Cirelli attended Mesa Community College and Arizona State University and has a Master s degree in Education. Cirelli was a third baseman as a player and joined the MCC staff as infield coach in He was named head coach in 1995 and now holds the record for most wins in the history of Mesa Community College Baseball. Over the past 29 years, Mesa has been in the playoffs 24 times with four NJCAA World Series appearances. His 2006 squad finished with a record of and a #1 national ranking. This year the T-Birds set a school record with 47 victories and have earned another berth in the NJCAA Division II World Series.. Cirelli was named American Baseball Coaches Association Southwest Region Coach of the Year in NJCAA Division II in 2004, 2005 and again in In the past 19 years, 45 MCC players have been drafted by Major League Baseball teams or played professionally. Of those 45 players, only five had been drafted prior to coming to Mesa. Most recently, Brian Broderick made his Major League debut with the Washington Nationals in In the summer of 2012 Cirelli coached for Novara in the Italian Baseball League. We take pride in helping a good high school player develop his game so he becomes a draftable player.
