1 Missouri State Horseshoe Pitching News Volume 21, Issue 1 An Award-Winning Publication February 2017 h o r s e s h o e National Association P i t c h e r s Prez Report by Ron Highley, President MOHPA A few days ago, the groundhog saw his shadow, so I guess we have 6 more weeks of winter. But if winter doesn t get any worse than it has been, we can handle it. Regardless of what the rodent says, it s still nice to go to our indoor facilities during the winter and pitch a tournament. We made it down to Hudson s Strawberry Shed in December. It was the first time we had been down to their nice facility. We had a nice visit with Frank and Ruth and the pitchers from down that way. We were especially glad that we had made it down when we heard of Frank s passing at the end of January. We have an Officers Meeting coming up the end of this month on February 25. We will again be meeting on the site of our State Tournament in Jefferson City. They were our only bid for the 2017 State Tournament, so plans are being made for Jeff City II. If you have any items you would like brought to our attention or if you would like to attend the meeting, contact me or one of your MOHPA Officers. By the time this comes out, there will be less than 150 days until the World Tournament in St. George, Utah. That may seem like a long time off, but July 17 will be here before you know it. If you haven t already, take advantage of the incentives being offered by the hosts, including a $100 offer for bringing a new friend and reimbursement of some Juniors entries, which means they pitch FREE. Remember, there are premade flyers, handouts, and promotional items on the NHPA homepage under Resources. Invite backyard horseshoe pitchers to your league. Handicap leagues are for all skill levels and are where most of us started. Look for the article on page 2 of this issue of Shoe Biz about a silver-haired former backyard pitcher from Liberty. Watch my monthly for my now famous at least in the Missouri horseshoe world farm reports. We had a MOHPA bonfire towards the end of October. Everybody had a good time, so we plan on making this an annual event. Watch for your invite in October, make plans to attend, and you can see at least a part of the Highley Farm. PS: As with last year, I was writing this during the Super Bowl. Last year, Peyton Manning won the Super Bowl and retired. Maybe now Tom Brady will retire! What a game; I think I rewrote these last few sentences 3 times. That was an Alan Francis/Brian Simmons kind of game! 16th Annual Holly Marie Memorial by Stan Griggs Another 18 angels have earned their wings. Angels were presented to the top three places in each class at the 16th Annual Holly Marie Memorial Mixed Open at the Don Harris Arena in Liberty, Missouri, on November 19. The angel count is now at 288; look to see if you can find them on the courts at your next tournament. The High Over Average awards Wings of Achievement were won by Randy Stewart (6.81% over average in the morning session) and Bob Outt (4.30% over average in the afternoon session). Class A: 1st place, Gregg Craven (30 ), 74.4% (9 angels); 2nd place, Gina Baker, 57.9% (3 angels); and 3rd place, Ray Plute (30 ), 59.3% (1 angel). Class B: 1st place, Elwyn Cooper (30 ), 37.5% (3 angels); 2nd place, Bob Outt (30 ), 47.5% (1 angel); and 3rd place, Brady Craven (30 ), 45.4% (1 angel). Class C: 1st place, Denise Bloss, 41.7% (7 angels); 2nd place, Nile Abbott (30 ), 34.6% (5 angels); and 3rd place, Glenn Light, 33.3% (2 angels). Class D: 1st place, Roy Flatt (30 ), 34.6% (9 angels); 2nd place, Ralph New, 32.5% (2 angels); and 3rd place, Glenn Light, 29.6% (1 angel). Class E: 1st place, Sandra Couch, 18.8% (2 angels); 2nd place, Mindy Atkins, 22.9% (1 angel); and 3rd place, Dennis Bales, 20.0% (1 angel). Class F: 1st place, Warner Matheney (30 ), 13.9% (1 angel); 2nd place, Randy Stewart, 14.5% (1 angel); and 3rd place, Lee Hubler, 18.4% (1 angel). The contributions for this year s tournament totaled $691.50; the tote board now stands at $ % of the proceeds generated by this tournament are donated to a cause that Stephanie and I choose as fitting in remembrance of Holly. But you may not know that he s been pitching in the Liberty Horseshoe Club, among others, for 30 years. His name is Eldon Nile ( The Nil-ator ) Abbott, and he s a proud 87 years young. He was born in Winigan, in north-central Missouri. He was raised on a farm milking cows and taking care of horses and all the other chores that needed to be done. It wasn t all work; he also enjoyed pitching horseshoes with his father and two older brothers. Nile says he didn t especially like the farm life back then, but now he is very thankful for his background. Nile is a Navy veteran who served from 1948 to He spent most of his time in Quonset Point, Rhode Island, until the Korean War started; he extended his service and spent the next 1½ years on an aircraft carrier in the Caribbean and in the Mediterranean. He was never near Korea, but served his time as needed. Nile was home on leave visiting his father, who was dying of lung cancer, at Grim-Smith Hospital in Kirksville, Missouri, when he met the love of his life: a student nurse named Reva. Nile and Reva were married in Kansas City a whopping 63 years ago. Strangely enough, their families were very similar. Both came from big families of 10 children, and both had seven girls and three boys. Nile and Reva had three children. Their son Steven has three step children and lots of grandchildren and great grandchildren through his wife Linda. Their daughter, Cheryl, and Bob Ball have a daughter, Carra, who is a nurse, and Cheryl also works in the medical field. Their daughter Debra is a nurse, and her only child is Nile and Reva s grand-dog Sienna. Sienna stays at the Abbot house a lot while Debra is working. After the Navy, Nile moved to Kansas City and worked at the City National Bank. Some time later, he began working at the Farmers Exchange Bank in Parkville, where he was Head Cashier and Vice President. Nile retired at 62 years of age. You may have been fortunate enough to sing the Star-Spangled Banner before a tournament in Liberty with a beautiful background Nile Abbott of singers. Nile is one of the pitchers who help get that tune just right. There is a reason for that: he sang in a quartet for 20 years. He was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of the Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America Incorporated. He was one of 95 men in the Chorus. 3 From My Court to Yours by Jim Bainter, MOHPA Secretary/Treasurer Happy belated Valentine s Day to everyone. I ve been struggling to come up with ideas and useful information to pass along for the past week or so, but the good weather has had my attention diverted. It gave me more time to get ready for winter may it never arrive. So, with no priority intended, here goes. For the last issue of Shoe Biz, we did a trial run and sent out a mass to 2015 and 2016 members. We will do another mass for this issue. The does not cost anything because it s done through the NHPA Newsline editor. Shoe Biz will continue to be posted on our web site as soon as it s available which is usually 2 weeks or more before the mailed issues arrive. For those of you who don t use the computer or have Internet service, never fear you will continue to receive a printed copy. The major benefit is to save the MOHPA postage for printing and mailing the issues. The other benefit is that we don t have to restrict ourselves to a certain number of pages, usually 24, including front and back pages. The last issue had only 20 pages. We weren t able to fill up 24 and thus had to cut articles to keep a multiple of 4. We want to get current and relevant news to you, and the page limitation requires Elizabeth to prioritize available articles. In the days since our trial, several pitchers have opted to go only and pass on the printed issue. I would like to encourage everyone to consider the -only version. You can print the necessary information like tournament schedules and entry forms as well as the annual renewal form and still have the complete issue on file for reference. If you opt to use the version, I must have your current address. I will never know whether you receive the issue, so please keep your records up to date. To Tournament Directors: The end-of-year dues card transition for members is always troublesome. Please check your tournament entries early to make sure that everyone has a new card. If you know a pitcher is delinquent, please notify Stan and/or me before the fact rather than surprising us with your results reports. If a pitcher is delinquent, his or her dues must be collected before they pitch, and the money should be sent to me on the following Monday. Delays could cause the tournament results from being promptly posted to Natstats. Regarding new cards: Please check them to make sure I didn t misspell your name, invert a number, or mark the wrong category. All of these have happened on occasion. Sometimes I don t have full control of my fingers! Recently, there was an on court injury that resulted in a hospital stay for the pitcher. The NHPA insurance covers all sanctioned events. It is imperative that the Tournament Director or facility manager notify an MOHPA officer immediately. We can make the NHPA notification, or someone on site can do so, but we need to be notified. There are forms that must be completed for the NHPA and for the insurance provider. I have the forms and will make sure that the clubs have copies. If necessary, I can always a copy to a club officer. Final numbers for our MOHPA membership for 2016: 670 Adults and 73 Juniors. Keep up the good work in recruiting new members. We need to get back over 700 adult members this year. Current numbers for 2017: 460 Adults and 30 Juniors. This is near where we were this time last year. The NHPA Game Related Sales program is changing. There will be more information in the coming months. If you need new shoes and equipment, now is the time to consider a purchase. To the membership: I am announcing my intent to run for reelection as your Secretary/Treasurer at the 2017 general membership meeting in September. Caution I won t last forever. Condensed Financial Report Funds Available November 1, 2016 $17, Dues Collected 6, NHPA Dues Paid 3, Operating Expenses 1, Funds Available February 1, 2017 $19, Nothing Better Than Friends, from page 2 One Sunday afternoon, Nile was pitching horseshoes at a family reunion in Laclede, Missouri, and was being beaten pretty badly by Lyle Samuelson. (Lyle is married to Nile s first cousin, Ina Mae.) They had pitched at picnics in the past, but this time, Lyle seemed to know a little more about what he was doing. Nile asked and Lyle informed him about the Liberty Horseshoe League. This was on a Sunday. Nile was at the league the following Tuesday. He has now been there for more than 30 years pitching Monday mornings, Tuesday and Thursday nights, and many tournaments along the way. After a few years of pitching, he became president of the club and served for 6 years. Nowadays, he is usually the first one at the arena taking care of the temperature and lights inside and helping with tournaments and league setup. He pitches the first and third games in league play so he can help proof all the score sheets. In 2012, Wayne Henderson put Nile s name in for the Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame, and he proudly wears his beautiful blue ring and an HOF patch on his shirt. He had a bad bout of pneumonia last year; he collapsed at the arena and was taken home by Dee McIntire and Elwyn Cooper. His daughter, Debbie, took him to North Kansas City Hospital, where he was treated for 11 days. It took a while, but he is back full time helping with anything he can. Nile credits his horseshoe activities for his well-being and advanced years. When asked about his biggest success in life is, he laughed and shrugged his shoulders, saying I m normal. With tears in his eyes, he said, I m happy to have lived this long and to have so many friends. He went on to say, Last week, when I had that 72% game, Gregg Craven was pitching next to me. He slowed down when he noticed how I was pitching and kept an eye over here. When I pitched my last shoe, he congratulated me right then. (Tears in his eyes again.) You know he went right over to that microphone and announced it to everyone. Later that night he put it out there on the internet for everyone to see. He took a big swallow and said, That s what I mean. Nothing better than friends. 3

4 Last Shoe Edgar Stoverink August 23, 1961 December 11, 2016 By Cori Stoverink and daughter Edgar Stoverink, of Leopold, Missouri, passed away at his home on December 11, 2016, at 55 years of age. Edgar had stage 4 colon cancer for 3½ years and fought a good battle, but the treatments finally wouldn t work anymore. Most people with whom he came in contact knew that Edgar was sick, but he never let his sickness get in the way of anything. If you asked him how he was doing, his famous line was Doing pretty good. No matter how he felt. Edgar was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was one of 12 children. He worked as a deckhand at Mo Dry Dock in Cape Girardeau for 25 years. Even after he had to quit (because of his cancer), he continued to make frequent visits and go on lunch outings with his co-workers. Some of his co-workers even made time to have coffee and breakfast with him. The Stoverinks owned a little Ma and Pa store in Leopold that was called the Leopold Country Store. They bought the store in 2003 and owned it for 13 years. They ran it together, and then Edgar helped run it full time with Cori for the past 3½ years. Edgar was a member of St. John s Catholic Church in Leopold, an inside guard for 22 years for the Knights of Columbus #5898, and a member of the SEMO Horseshoe Pitching Association. He also played softball until he was 50. He truly enjoyed softball. He only quit after he got sick. Before that, you would most likely see him on the pitchers mound with all his teammates calling out Pretty Shoe Edgar every time he threw a strike. Edgar and Cori met in A couple of mutual friends took them on a blind date. They went to the Mall, ate Chinese, and finished the evening with a movie. He and Cori were married on April 20, 1996, at St. John s Catholic Church. Theirs was a blended family of six children and ten grandchildren. Cori had never played horseshoes before she met Edgar. Edgar had played horseshoe all his life and was fortunate enough to find someone who, although she had never played before, learned to love the game as much as he did. After their youngest son Wesley was born, he went with them all the time and could be found playing on the empty pits. He learned to love the game also, but there was a hitch he couldn t play in his parents league until he was 13 years old. Cori and Edgar heard about an organization where Wesley could play at 7 years of age, so the family joined MOHPA and have played with them ever sense. Parents and son both enjoyed it so much that they turned it into a family thing. They loved the sport, the travel, and the chance to see new faces. The Glen Allen club was special to them, as were all the people involved. What they loved the most about the people is the honesty and respect they have for one another. Even though pitchers compete against each other all the time, they are all such good friends. They never really get upset over the game but just enjoy the sport. Pitchers also make you feel so welcome, and Edgar really liked everyone. By Jeanette Class Clifford A. Collins, Sr. April 2, 1934 December 3, 2016 Longtime horseshoe pitcher Cliff Collins of Foristell, Missouri, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on December 3, from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 82 years old. Cliff lived his entire lifetime in the St. Charles, Lincoln, and Warren County areas. He came from a family of 9, with 4 brothers and 4 sisters and worked as a laborer. He met his future wife, Nona, through family, and they were married on April 30, They raised nine children, whose ages today range from 44 to 62 years. They have 38 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. Cliff started out pitching horseshoes with the St. Charles Warren County League. He pitched with the Golden Triangle Summer League and joined the New Melle Horseshoe Club in He and Nona pitched in the Jack & Jill League. He pitched his last year with the QRHC in 2008 with the Men s Wednesday Night League when his health began to fail. He had also pitched for the Lions Horseshoe Club in Warrenton. Cliff paid a surprise visit to the NHPA facility several years ago, to see old friends. Cliff pitched in many tournaments in New Melle. He also pitched in the Missouri State Fair Horseshoe Tournament for many years and also participated in many Missouri State Horseshoe Tournaments. He was Missouri State Senior Men s Champion for 3 years, and was a member of the NHPA for 13 years. We have many good memories of Cliff from the New Melle era. He was a very good horseshoe pitcher and a tough competitor on the courts. The Collins moved from Hawk Point to High Hill, Missouri, in 2004, where Nona still resides. His family will be having a Celebration of Life in Cliff s memory on April 30, 2017, the same day as they married 63 years ago; if you would like to attend, please call Nona at for more information. 4

5 By Elizabeth Furner Frank Hudson March 11, 1935 January 25, 2017 William Frank Hudson of Crane, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at 81 years of age. He was born March 11, 1935, in Aurora, Missouri, the son of the late Sir Neigle and Oda (Friend) Hudson. Frank was a 1952 graduate of Crane High School. On December 12, 1953, he married Ruth Roberts in Aurora. They were wed for 63 years. He was a United States Army Veteran, and was stationed in Okinawa between the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a lineman for REA in Mt. Vernon, worked in the maintenance department for the city of Crane, and was the maintenance supervisor for the Hillhaven Nursing Home in Crane. Frank loved to pitch horseshoes. He and Ruth started the horseshoe venue in Crane and were responsible for building 12 courts. Frank served as the Crane Creek Ringers President. He pitched in several World Tournaments and won his first World Tournament trophy in Spearfish, South Dakota, in In 1990, Frank was elected Zone Director for Missouri in the 417-area code. He and Ruth took 3 years to build Hudson Hall Courts, complete with indoor toilets, a lounge area, and a little kitchen. You can still pitch at this venue under its current name the Strawberry Shed. Frank and Ruth were inducted into the MOHPA Hall of Fame in You can pitch in the courts that Frank and Ruth built when you sign up to pitch in March. By Jeanette Claas Ken Sykora October 21, 1925 November 17, 2016 Longtime St. Louis horseshoe pitcher, Ken Sykora of Maryland Heights, Missouri, passed away on November 17, 2016, of complications of lung disease. Ken joined the NHPA in His last year of membership was 2011, a total of 24 years. Ken was a member of the Horseshoe Club of Greater St. Louis and a member of the former Ballwin Horseshoe Club. He pitched in many tournaments at the New Melle Horseshoe Club. In later years, Ken could be seen in his motorized wheelchair taking in the skills and talents of the professional horseshoe pitchers participating in the Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament. Our deepest sympathies are sent to Ken s family. Ken was laid to rest at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. We will always remember him. By Jeanette Claas Michael Dentsbier August 10, 1952 December 12, 2016 Mike Dentsbier, 64, of Wentzville, Missouri, died suddenly on Monday, December 12, After trimming some trees for a customer, he was putting away his equipment when he apparently had a heart attack. His sudden death shocked and stunned all that knew him. Mike was born and raised in St. Louis. He had two brothers and two sisters. He attended Northwest High School and graduated in He met his future wife, Carol, shortly after. Mike joined the National Guard in 1970 and served for 6 years. Mike and Carol married on September 30, 1972, and became the parents of three daughters: Michaele, Colleen, and Brenda. They enjoyed seven grandchildren ranging in ages from 8 to 20 years. Mike was a family man and was proud of each of his family members, including his sons-in-law. Mike was employed by Emerson Electric for 10 years and then went to work for Ford Motor Company, where he worked for the next 23 years. After he retired in 2006, Mike drove a big yellow bus for the Wentzville School District. He left early in the morning to pick up the kids for school and then returned at 2:00 PM to bring them home. He enjoyed the kids, and they all loved him. In 2010, he started a lawn mowing business that kept him busy between bus routes. His business grew to be too much, and he was thinking about selling out after the first of the year. Mike enjoyed fishing and creating tools, and was a great woodcraftsman. He made many unique corn hole boards. Mike and his son-in-law, John Velasco, joined the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club in He was a member of the NHPA for 7 years. He loved everything about horseshoes. He started out as a beginner and began working to improve himself. Mike became one of QRHC s most valuable players. As soon as he had joined, he began volunteering for many jobs. In 2014, he was elected by his peers to be the second Vice-President of QRHC. He served as League Director for the Golden Triangle Summer Horseshoe League. He always went above and beyond his duties. He also learned the statistics program for tournaments. In fact, he took it upon himself to organize the QRHC tournaments. He personally called all participants to make sure that they were enrolled in the tournament and knew what time they would be pitching. He had this down to a science. 6 Missouri Horseshoe Club News Independence Horseshoe Club by Nancy Gunter Well, the yo-yo winter weather closely resembles my yo-yo pitching average not too cold for too long and not too warm to get used to. Soon enough, we ll be complaining about the heat, humidity, and bugs. The Independence Memorial Tournament was held February 4 at the Harris Arena in Liberty. There was a great turnout, with 9 classes pitching. The spring court preparation and summer league is rapidly approaching. We are also anticipating the Corporate Challenge event that is held annually on our courts. We enjoy hosting this event and are always trying to wrangle in a few new pitchers to our area clubs. I m amazed when people seem so surprised that there are several organized clubs in our area. Our Spring Open tournament will be held May 6. Please see page 10 in this issue of Shoe Biz for the contact information and come join us. Capital City Horseshoe Club by Mel Bruemmer 2017 will be a very busy year for the CCHC. We are once again privileged to host your State Tournament over Labor Day weekend. We have the experience of 2016 to help us bring you a State Tournament to remember. The Capital Plaza will again be our host hotel. Please make your reservations early, because it helps us in so many ways. Ads for the program book are the key to the tournament s success. Please help us by selling or buying an ad if you can. The CCHC concluded play for 2016 in October. The Fall League winners were Jerry Weller (1st), Michelle Johnson (2nd), Kevin Chambers (3rd), and Steve Johnson (4th), with 18 players participating. The End of League tournament champion was Steve Steck, and Steve Johnson won the CCHC club championship at our annual picnic. The Club will sponsor 9 tournaments and 3 leagues, along with hosting the State Tournament in Please see the tournament schedule and pick out a time to pitch with us at our great Washington Park courts. Yes, it will be a busy year. A successful year, also, if we are lucky enough to see each and every one of you in Jefferson City in Strawberry Shed Horseshoe Club By Tracy Archer Weekly practices are still being held at the Shed, but it just isn t the same without Frank s presence. Frank passed away in January he was 81 wise years old. To put it simply, Frank was a Jack of All Trades. There was not much that Frank couldn t do. If the need arose to tackle a project unfamiliar to him, he would figure it out while going through the process of accomplishing the unknown. Frank had many achievements. Recently, he and Ruth, his wife, were inducted into the Missouri Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame. Frank was modest about that award. He was not after glory or notoriety, but he and Ruth appreciated the recognition of being in the Hall of Fame. We all miss visiting with Frank and hearing about his diverse activities. He loved to grow strawberries, and enjoyed many hours all year dedicated to that hobby. He had lots of stories about his many travels and varieties of jobs he had held throughout his working (outside of the home) years. Not long ago, Frank told me that he had spent a lifetime learning and that his only regret was that he could not pass that knowledge along to others. Well, in my opinion, Frank was incorrect with that statement I learned a lot from Frank! The February tournament was cancelled at the Shed in honor of Frank s passing. Ruth is going to keep up the tradition of holding a March tournament. Everyone come out to enjoy the games. Liberty Horseshoe Club by Daphne Happy The indoor pitching facility at Harris Arena is a beehive of activity. The Winter Leagues are about at their midpoint, and tournaments are being held roughly every other weekend. The indoor tournaments will continue until the weather is warm enough to pitch outside again. Check the schedule published on the MOHPA web site and contact the Tournament Director listed to participate! Hope to see everyone there!! Although last fall s League Champions are history, they still deserve recognition. The Monday morning champions were Tom McGovern and Mike Crouch, beating out second-place finishers Roy Flatt and Harry Owens by 3 points. A half-point behind were Jim Moore and Darrell Pulliam in third place. Originally, there was a three-way tie for 3rd place that was broken by head to head competition. Another half point behind that traffic jam was another tie for 6th and 7th! What a competitive league we have on Monday mornings! Makes you wonder what they are putting in that morning coffee! Because we didn t have an even number of teams, Gregg Craven, our League Director, set up a Dummy Team and then commented at the end of the league that the Dummy Team kept three teams with tying records out of the cellar (his team and his brother Brady s team were two of them)! Walking away with Tuesday evening honors was the Championship team of Roy Flatt, Bob Bloss, Ron Jackson, and Robert Johnson, who finished 2.5 points ahead of the second-place team of Mary Vogel, John Kiser, Tom Dersham, and Bob Mitchell. Third place went to the team of Nile Abbott, Jessica Wilson, Janet Grabau, and Scott Engelmann, and the team of Savanna Johnson, Jana Miller, Brittany Koss, and Bob Mullin took fourth. The 2017 pitching season has kicked off with six new members: Janet Grabau from Independence, Bill Pilger from Polo, Christie Mullin from Liberty, Rick Marinelli from Kansas City, and Earl 6

7 Dye and Johnny Richter both from Kearney. Welcome, pitchers, to the greatest indoor sport around! For the most part, our members have stayed healthy. Laura Johnson finally bit the bullet and got her shoulder repaired; now she is chomping at the bit to resume pitching. Perry Mann had some more work done on the old ticker and is back pitching after a brief recovery period. Bob Mullin is still limping around promising to return soon. In the meantime, he s cheering on his wife Christie, one of our new pitchers. Robert Johnson s mother passed away in December. We extend our sympathy to him, his wife Sharon, and daughters Rebekah, Hannah, and Sarah. We were also saddened to learn of the passing of Richard Bendure in January. Richard and his brother Ray had both pitched with us in years past. Another huge hole left in our club s list of supporters is the passing of Sarah Dusenbery, wife of Wayne. Our hearts go out to Wayne. Peculiar Lions Park Horseshoe Club by George Chichura Peculiar Horseshoe Club will begin its 2017 leagues on April 27. We will have at least 20 participants. Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club by Jeanette Claas It wasn t a white Christmas, but a blue Christmas season for the QRHC members with the shocking news that Mike Dentsbier passed away so suddenly. We also received news that longtime area horseshoe pitchers Cliff Collins and Ken Sykora recently passed away. Our dear friend from Cape Girardeau, Edgar Stoverink, passed away the day before Mike. It was hard for us to get into the Christmas spirit. When you next visit the NHPA/NHPF facility, be sure to go to the Brick Memorial Plaza. A very nice monument has been installed in honor of Dr. Jack Freeman. It was a busy schedule ahead for us as the fall season began with the NHPA Sanctioned Club/League Tournament followed by the Octoberfest Tournament. Rich Altis was the Tournament Champion, with 7 wins and no losses. The QRHC also held the Future Youth Tournament with 16 participants. McKayla Sanders was the Tournament Champion. In November, the Fall Team Tournament was held under Tournament Directors Jim and Carol Howard. The team of Ed Pashia, Bobby Thompson, Don Shores, John Sapper, Dan Peterson, and Ralph Nunn won the title of Grand Champions with 18 wins. It was an exciting day for David LaChance. He threw his highest game ever of 19 ringers and 63 points. He sure picked the right time to do it! On November 12, a group of 25 to 30 motorcyclists came to the courts to do some pitching. Tom and Cathy Boyer and Lonnie and Donna Nasalroad, members of QRHC, had invited their motorcycle group, the St. Charles Harley Owners Group, to come to the courts and learn all about horseshoe pitching. Rich Altis took them through the Hall of Fame room and toured the facility. He explained the fundamentals and rules of horseshoes before letting them warm up on the courts. He then broke the group into teams, with the winning team from each court moving up. The team that ended up on Court 1 was the winner. The motorcyclists, some of whom are also members of the Patriot Guard Riders, enjoyed the experience and left with many favorable comments. Tom and Lonnie are planning to get another group together for another outing in the spring. A few days before Thanksgiving, the annual Turkey Trot was held. Ed Griffith earned the title of Tournament Champion. James Driver took the turkey home with him to Jefferson City. The Future Champions Tournament was held on the South Courts. Leon Wolken was the tournament Champion in Class A, Tyler Ware in Class B, and Mackenzie Compton in Class C. Mark Snead is doing a great job organizing the Junior/Cadet tournaments. The annual Jingle Bell Tournament was held on December 10 under the direction of Gaylord and Carol Compton. Rich Altis was determined the Grand Champion of the tournament with 7 wins, 0 loses, and a ringer percentage of 79.1%. Joe Santel won the Christmas ham. In Class B, a bit of misfortune befell Jeff Baldwin of Quincy, Illinois, who tripped over the backboard, fell into the pit, and hit his leg into the peg. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he had surgery to repair the injury. The first word out of Jeff s mouth was, Ouch! and the next words were, My wife is going to kill me! The QRHC tournament signup sheets have been filling up so fast (which is a good thing) that the QRHC decided to hold an extra tournament in December so that all could participate in a tournament. The Christmas Combo and the Future Youth Tournament were scheduled for December 17. As it turned out, however, the Iceman arrived the previous Friday night, so it was decided to cancel both tournaments. This year the Don Claas Memorial Tournament will be held in memory of Mike Dentsbier. We hope you can make it; a tribute to Mike will be held on the same date as the tournament. We are now trying to look forward to the 2017 New Year with another busy schedule full of tournaments to hold for you. May you have many ringers in 2017 and a Happy and Healthy New Year. 7

8 Last Shoe, from page 5 ever find a replacement for him. His shoes will be hard to fill. Mike played in almost every tournament held at QRHC and traveled to Jeff City, Liberty, and the State Fair for more competition. I had a special moment with Mike when he pitched in his last tournament, the Jingle Bell Rock, on December 10, I was keeping score for his class and there happened to be four Mikes in this division. I would always say I know that Mike will win this game. They all had so much fun together, and I m sure they will never forget this meaningful tournament. When the stats were turned into our state statistician, Stan Griggs, he reported to us that Mike had thrown his highest game ever. I wonder if that was meant to be. This past summer at the World Tournament held in Montgomery, Alabama, Mike won first place in his division. He pitched the first week of the tournament, and word traveled fast to the QRHC horseshoe members who would be attending the second week of the tournament. His wife was with him when he received his trophy. She said that everyone was so happy for him, and he was thrilled with his big World Tournament trophy. After they left, they traveled to Memphis and stayed at the Bass Pro Hotel for several days. I caught up with him on the cell phone when he arrived there, and I could hear the grin on his face as I talked with him. Mike was a special person. His family felt the same way the horseshoe pitchers felt about him. His daughter, Brenda, said, Anybody who knew my dad would know that he was one-ofa-kind. There wasn t a person who came into contact with him who did not think so. He always had a smile on his face that was contagious. He was so easygoing; if we would get stressed out about anything, he would always say it will be ooookaaay. Just hearing that made everything better, and of course it would be followed up with a hug. He would do anything for anybody and not think twice about it; even if he didn t have the time, he would make the time. I know that his sons-in-law looked up to him, and I will make sure that my boys will always remember the great man he was and take after him. My dad was and always will be my hero. Right now, this does not seem real, but I know that there isn t a moment, memory, hug, thought, word of wisdom, or encouragement that I will ever forget. Mike would always say, I m the happiest guy in the world. Funeral services for Mike were held on Friday, December 16. Unfortunately, St. Charles County and outlying areas had a severe ice storm that day, and because of the road conditions, many of his friends could not make it to show their respect for Mike and support to Mike s family, but our thoughts are with them always. Our deepest sympathies go to his wife, Carol, and his entire family. Mike may be gone, but he will never be forgotten. His spirit will always remain on the courts at the NHPA facility. His friends at QRHC are purchasing a brick in memory of Mike to be installed at the Dr. Freeman Memorial Brick Walkway. He was a wonderful guy! STOP Don t throw me away! Keep me for future reference. Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament in Wentzville By Jeanette Claas Some pitchers out there may not remember Harvey Wobbe and the Six Pac Tournament, which began in New Melle and continued in the new venue at Quail Ridge. It was the dream of Joe Faron to have the best of the best compete in our area. What better place than the Hall of Fame? Harvey helped sponsor Joe s dream, and the rest is history. After Harvey s death, it was feared that this stellar competition would fall by the wayside. With perseverance, the club from the east made it happen under a different name. On May 6 and 7, 2017, the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club will be hosting The 6th Annual Hall of Fame Invitational Horseshoe Tournament at the NHPA Hall of Fame and Museum in Wentzville, Missouri, for the top footers and top footers (both Elders and Women) who meet the requirements. From a spectator s perspective, this is one of the most exciting events in the sport; it is like seeing a World Tournament Championships in our own backyard. Reed Roy Flatt Junior Spotlight: Memo Ramirez By Savanna Johnson Many of you are familiar with Ron and Victoria Highley and the red wagon that carries more items than Mary Poppins bag. They always have fruit snacks and probably some sort of DVD player or tablet, and just about anything else you can think of. Along with that wagon comes Warren Highley, who we ve all watched grow up from just a little baby. Warren is now accompanied by his cousin Guiermo Ramirez. Memo (as we know him) travels with his cousin and grandparents to different tournaments to pitch with us. Memo has competed in two World Tournaments. His first was in He went in at 3.14% and ended with 6.67%. In 2016, he went in at 8.74% and ended with 11.11%! He is a wonderful pitcher and always tries his best to make his grandpa, Ron Highley, proud. Memo has been pitching for a while now, and he says his favorite part is the ringers! Memo is now 8 years old and is in the third grade. He loves soccer, and when he grows up he wants to be a soccer player! I ve spent a lot of time with this kid, and he is just one of the sweetest little guys out on the courts. I m sure many of you have seen Memo with his cousin, Warren Highley. They often run around either collecting score sheets, or selling drinks, or even manning a shoe wash station. They have been around us since they were just tiny little things, and now they are both great pitchers who just rock it! All pitchers will be placed according to their NatStats average as of May 17, New pitchers may use a sanctioned league average of at least 400 shoes (Attach signed letter from League Director) or send a score sheet for 100 shoes pitched consecutively and witnessed by 2 sanctioned members. 3. Each singles participant also signed up as a TEAM member will accumulate points based on their win/loss record: 1 st Place 8 points, 2 nd Place 7 Points, 3 rd Place 6 Points, 4 th Place 5 Points, 5 th Place 4 Points, 6 th Place 3 Points, 7 th Place 2 Points and 8 th Place 1 Point. Any classes with less than 8 pitchers will still start with 8 points for 1 st Place. Tie Breakers: 1) Win/Loss percentage, 2) losing points scored. 6. ANY PITCHERS not completing their schedule forfeit all prizes, unless officially excused. 7. ALL PITCHERS must wear a shirt with their last name lettered neatly on the back. 8. TROPHIES Plaque and patch will be presented to 1 st Place only in each singles class. 9. SCOREKEEPING fees have been included in the entry fee. 10. NOTIFICATION Pitching times will be mailed or ed ONLY to the team captains and singles-only pitchers. It will be the team captain s responsibility to notify their team members of their Pitching times. 11. TEAM PORTION OF TOURNAMENT Points accumulated by team members during normal singles play will be added together. If there is a tie for 1 st Place, the tie-breaker will be as follows: The 5 pitchers on each team will be matched up by ringer %. Each of the paired pitchers on opposing teams will play one game using a 90% handicap. The team with highest win record will become the MISSOURI CLUB TEAM CHAMPIONS. 12. CLUB TROPHY One State Championship Club/Team plaque will be presented to the 1 st Place Club Team at the MOHPA Awards Banquet to be held, September 2, 2017, in Jefferson City, MO. Individual plaques will be presented to each of the five 1 st Place Club/Team members. 14 MOHPA Hall of Fame by Dee McIntire The deadline is approaching to send your write-up of your nomination for that special someone in your horseshoe circle who you think should be in the Missouri Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame. Even though the deadline for submission isn t until June 1, it will be here before you know it! The Hall of Fame Committee will be accepting nominations for inductees into the MOHPA Hall of Fame for 2017 through June 1, The nomination form is on the next page, or you can access it on the MOHPA web site. Nominations can be submitted to the chairperson either by at dinetamcintire@gmail.com or by mail to Dee McIntire, 3205 NE 66th Terrace, Gladstone, MO Each nominee must have been an active adult NHPA/MOHPA member for at least 10 years. The three categories are listed below with recommended items that should be addressed during the completion of the nomination form. READ CAREFULLY: any adult male pitching from the full distance platform may enter the OPEN MEN'S DIVISION regardless of age, just as any adult female may enter the OPEN WOMEN'S DIVISION. to enter the SENIOR DIVISION, you must be 60 years of age or older before the end of any man that turns 70 years of age in 2017, is older than 70, or has an approved medical exemption may enter the ELDER MEN S DIVISION. entrants in the JUNIOR BOY and JUNIOR GIRL DIVISION must be 18 years old or less for the entire 2017 calendar year. JUNIOR CADET DIVISION entrants must be 12 years old or younger for the entire 2017 calender year. Note # 1. 30ft men with medical exemptions must include a copy of their NhPa charter acceptance letter or a copy of their NhPa card showing the me box checked to verify your eligibility to participate in this division. Note # 2. For class play, a minimum of 48 must enter this division or it will be canceled. all entrants will then pitch in the open Preliminaries. Note # 3 Junior and cadet divisions will be mixed for prelimary play. the pitching schedule will be finalized by May 31st and published on the NhPa website. if you indicated above to receive the schedule by mail, it will be mailed to the address you have listed above during the first week in June.
