1 2008 Umpire Schedule This schedule contains your 2008 Umpire assignments along with hopefully other helpful information. Much consideration has been given to all teams to accomodate their game schedules. I am aware that some of your assignments may be right before or right after your game or you may have to return for an afternoon Saturday game after your team played and early game. But, please make every effort to make your assignment, the players are counting on you. Failure to meet your assignment can lead to disciplinary action from the CNLL Board and we need to do everything to avoid that situation. Please remember that CNLL is an ALL volunteer organization and that includes our Umpire Program. It is our policy to follow Little League guidelines and not pay for umpires at any level. Our League in cooperation with District 14 provides ample training and instruction for our Volunteer Umpires; every manager, coach and parent has had the opportunity to attend the District training sessions and clinics. What we have is an Umpire Cooperative, where managers and coaches (with the assistance of certain individual volunteer umpires), umpire other teams and divisions in return for future coverage of your game. The players of CNLL ask that you support them and make your umpire assignment. AN IMPORTNAT REMINDER - Having a practice scheduled on the same date as an umpire assignment does not preclude you from missing the umpire assignment. CNLL Board policy is that your scheduled umpire assignment takes priority over ANY practice. Your attendance and completion of your team assignment shows your commitment to the players of CNLL to fulfill your obligations and to the principles of Little League Baseball and the other Volunteers who are key to the League's success. Thanks and have a great time! Things to note: Please arrive to your scheduled game at least a 1/2 hour before game time to complete a pregame discussion with your partners or crew. Feel welcome to contact your partner to introduce yourselves. If your team is assigned to the BASES, feel welcome to send along extra Umpires to fill the bases of your scheduled assignment. If there are multiple teams asssigned to work a game or bases, DO NOT assume that you can skip or miss your assignment, your team MUST fulfill its assignment. If you have attended District 14 or CNLL Umpire training you will be receiving an official BLACK CNLL Volunteer Umpire shirt and a league umpire hat with the initials "CN" embroiderd on the cap, please wear them. Grey slacks are recommended, but any dark colored pants will do. If you have attended a Rules Clinic, Begining Mechanics Clinic, the Advanced Mechanics Clinic and do not have your official shirt or hat, please contact me. If you have not qualified for a CN Umpire shirt or hat, please wear a black polo style shirt with NO sports team or business logos on the shirt or hat, keep the shirt and hat blank. Steel toed shoes (or plate umpire shoes) are highly recommended for your plate assignments. FAIR/FOUL COVERAGE Plate Umpire - all fair/foul coverage - exceptions below Base Umpire - ONLY when in A Position (or D Position with 3 or 4 man crew): from front of first base to feet (D Position - from front of third base to feet) 2. CATCH/NO CATCH COVERAGE Plate Umpire - all fly balls and/or line drives on 60' 3. BASE UMPIRE MOVEMENT Hit to infield (ground ball or flyball) from any position: Glance at direction of ball; Pause to read play, watch infielder, on throw move to gain angle to make call Hit to outfield (ground ball or flyball) from any position: Glance at direction of ball; Break in to Working Area in infield, pivot, watch lead runner, glance at batter/runner touch first base 4. TAGS AND TOUCHES Base Umpire responsible for ALL base runners At First and Second Base - Base Umpire Multiple runners - Base Ump: trail runner, Plate Ump: has all tags and touches at third except batter-runner Plate Ump - with no runners - moves up first base line to watch for pulled foot or swipe tag by 1st baseman, only offers information, NEVER overrules or changes call 5. BASERUNNER - FIRST TO THIRD Base Umpire - breaks in the Working Area and pivots taking runner (R1) to second and picks up batter-runner Plate Umpire - determine Catch/No Catch; move to 3rd base Library and read play; if runner (R1) continues to third, move in to make call 6. CHECK SWING Check Swing on a BALL - Plate Ump can go for help Plate Umpire - points to Base Ump with left hand, saying, Did he go? Base Umpire - Yes, he did go with OUT signal OR No, he did not go with SAFE signal Plate Umpire - Indicate STRIKE, if Base Ump indicates batter went, correct the count Cannot appeal Check Swing on a STRIKE
