Some of the top prospects, like Yoan Moncada and Lucas Giolito, moved up to the big leagues and graduated off of prospect lists. The group the White Sox sent to the Arizona Fall League this year does not include any of their upper-echelon prospects, but those who are here are trying to elbow their way onto the now-crowded radar in the organization. A pair of those Minor Leaguers, catcher Seby Zavala and outfielder Tito Polo, certainly opened some eyes with their performances on Friday in Glendale's 7-6 win in Surprise. Zavala went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs while Polo did his job as the Desert Dogs' leadoff man with two hits, two stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI of his own to help Glendale improve to 3-1 on the season. The way the game started, it looked like it was going to be a rout, with the Desert Dogs putting up four runs in the top of the first inning against Surprise starter Burch Smith of the Rays. Polo served as the catalyst with an infield single and eventually stole second and third. He scored on Indians No. 3 prospect Bobby Bradley's RBI single. After a walk to Phillies No. 12 prospect Cornelius Randolph, Zavala's first double, a line drive to left, scored both Bradley and Randolph. Zavala scored on a single by the Phillies' Edgar Cabral to finish off the opening frame scoring. "I swung at two curveballs early in the count," Zavala said. "He was kind of wild with his other pitches, his fastball and his changeup. "3-2, I was sitting offspeed. He threw me a curveball, I was able to get it down the line and keep it fair." Zavala faced Twins No. 8 prospect Tyler Jay to lead off the fourth after the Saguaros had gotten on the board with Royals outfielder Eliezer Hernandez's solo home run on the bottom of the second. This time, the catcher didn't waste any time, taking the Twins' former first-rounder's first pitch and doubling down the right-field line. He went to third when Hernandez had trouble fielding the extra-base hit in right field, though he was cut off at the plate when the Phillies' Edgar Cabral hit a ground ball to third baseman Edmundo Sosa (Cardinals' No. 12), who came home with the throw. "He threw me a two-seamer and kind of got it in on my hands, but I was able to let get deep enough so I was able to push it down the line," Zavala said. "I definitely want to work line-to-line. If they throw me on the corners, I want to be able to spread the ball. If they throw it over the middle, I want to work the middle of the field." The Desert Dogs added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth off of Cardinals No. 14 prospect Jordan Hicks. Again, it was Polo who got things going with a leadoff single, moving to third on Pirates infielder Mitchell Tolman's double and scoring on fellow Pirate Logan Hill's sacrifice fly. Bradley's single plated Tolman to give Glendale a 6-2 lead.

That extra run off of Bradley's bat came in handy as the Saguaros rallied late. Rangers No. 15 prospect Josh Morgan and Sosa singled in runs in the sixth, while Twins first baseman Chris Paul doubled in a run in the seventh and scored on an error to bring Surprise within a run, 6-5. Polo's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth made it 7-5, a crucial run because Rangers outfielder Michael O'Neill hit a solo shot in the bottom of the frame to make it a one-run game again. The Saguaros loaded the bases with two outs, but Phillies No. 30 prospect J.D. Hammer came in to get Morgan to ground out to short for his first AFL save. Polo is now 4-for-12 with three runs scored and three steals in three games. Zavala has played in two of Glendale's four contests and has come out swinging a hot stick, going 4-for-7 in the process. In many ways, he is just picking up where he left off from a breakout season that saw him hit.282/.353/.499 with 21 home runs across two levels of A ball. "I was working on some stuff early on, in Spring Training and early on in the season and it finally clicked for me," said Zavala, a San Diego State product who was part of Tony Gwynn's final Draft class at the school in "I was able to play consistently with my power and my average. I had a couple of weeks off and I've been lucky enough to see the ball real well right now. Hopefully I can continue that." Former White Sox reliever Webb dies By Scott Merkin / MLB.com Oct. 15, 2017 CHICAGO -- Former White Sox reliever Daniel Webb was killed Saturday night in an ATV crash in Northwest Tennessee. Webb, 28, missed the entire 2017 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on June 10, He made 94 appearances for the White Sox between and had a 3.99 ERA and 58 strikeouts over 67 2/3 innings in '14. He was released by the White Sox last November. The White Sox issued the following statement concerning Webb's passing on Sunday afternoon. "Daniel left many friends within the Chicago White Sox organization, and we are all shocked and stunned by the news of last night's terrible accident. He was a terrific young man with a full life ahead of him. All thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends as they deal with today's tragic news." According to a report from WKRN.com, Webb was killed when the ATV hit an object in the woods, rolling over and caused him to break his neck. He had just gotten married a few weeks earlier and his wife was one of the three other people injured in the incident according to the report. It was Feb. 27, 2014 when Webb's mother, Sandra, passed away suddenly at the age of 54. Webb was notified in Glendale as he was competing for a spot on the White Sox roster during Spring Training. "I thought about her every day. Some days were worse than others," Webb said one year after his mom's passing. "Some days it hit me and it took a while for it to set in, really." One of Webb's custom gloves from Rawlings featured her name. He was a free agent after the release by the White Sox, who acquired him in a trade with the Blue Jays on Jan. 1, 2012, that sent Jason Frasor to Toronto. Inbox: How do White Sox prepare for Draft? Director of amateur scouting Nick Hostetler answers questions from fans By Scott Merkin / MLB.com Oct. 13, 2017 CHICAGO -- Nick Hostetler, the White Sox director of amateur scouting, took time from his busy 2018 MLB Draft preparation to serve as the White Sox Inbox guest for this week. Here's Part 1 of Hostetler's answers. We have a tough time drafting hitters. How can you judge a young hitter and translate his ability to the Majors? -- Cory, Glen Ellyn, Obviously that has changed here in the past few years, and I think it starts with Tim Anderson. One of the reasons why it might look like we had a tough time drafting hitters is because we used to take a lot of pitching. But the one thing you do is you try to limit the swing-and-miss picks and try to take guys who have a good eye and understand the strike zone and have the ability to get on base. What are your thoughts on drafting the 2018 first-round pick from high school vs. college? -- Cary, Buffalo, Grove,

Doesn't matter. It's really irrelevant whether they are a high school player or college player, pitcher whatever it may be. You never want to limit your pool when you are picking at any point in the Draft, let alone No. 4. It will be wide open regardless of whatever demographic it should come from. Past Drafts were during contention, so picks had to fit needs. Is this Draft more work since you're not looking for specific position? -- Jon, One Draft is never more work than another. If anything, you try to do things each year to progressively continue to get better as a department. So you are always adding more things that you do and using more data, using more information. The current Draft you are in is always the most work you are going to have. What is the most important trait you look for when evaluating a hitting prospect? -- Ken, Crestwood, The big thing for me is confidence in the box: Guys who get in the box and know they belong in there, guys who show the ability to recognize a pitch and whether it's a strike, understand the strike zone. And guys who make contact. Those are the main things I focus on when I'm watching a hitter. What is Zack Collins' primary goal at Instructs? -- Matt, When he went down there, Zack was more just getting into a rhythm and timing at the plate that best suited his approach. Minor League hitting coordinator Mike Gellinger has done a really nice job of getting him into a good spot offensively. He looked terrific last week. And then defensively, continuing to work on his receiving. His throwing has been great. His pop times have been terrific, anywhere from 1.9 to Minor League catching coordinator John Orton has done a nice job with him there. Really defensively, just a continued progression of what he worked on this season. After physical ability (obviously), what is the most important trait you look for when evaluating a player? -- John, The superstars, the guys who are good, they have that walk, that air about them. And you like to see that in guys who have confidence in their ability and know that when times get tough, they believe in themselves. Being able to see what that kid can bring to the table mentally is huge. Are there any positions or player traits after all of these trades and picks that you still think needs addressing? -- Rob, All set (laughs). Obviously pitching is something we continue to need. You can never have enough of it. But it's constantly, as White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said when this thing started, it's about adding as many impactful players and pitchers as we can, regardless of position or what arm they throw. That's really the way we've looked at this. I don't think there's anything specifically we think we have holes in our system. We'll just continue to keep adding. White Sox mourn passing of former pitcher Daniel Webb By Paul Roumeliotis / CSN Chicago Oct. 15, 2017 Former White Sox pitcher Daniel Webb died at the age of 28 in an ATV accident on Saturday night, according to Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis. Davis called it a tragic accident, and we should rally around the family. Webb, a Paducah, Ky. native, was with the White Sox from and went 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA. In 94 relief appearances with the White Sox, Webb was 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA. Takeaways from a trip to White Sox instructional league By James Fegan / The Athletic Oct. 13, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. If you need a defining image to understand the nature and purpose of instructional league for the rebuilding White Sox, you could do a lot worse than manager Rick Renteria sitting alongside hitting coach Todd Steverson and general manager Rick Hahn, vigorously applauding a farmhand shortstop (the lineup card says it was Laz Rivera) making a heads-up play to gun down a runner at home plate after making a diving stop in the hole.

After taking in Game 1 of Dodgers-Diamondbacks with his wife and family, Renteria told them he was done sitting through playoff games until he manages one for the White Sox. But after taking all of three days off at the end of the season to rest and relax, watching minor leaguers hustle around in the mid-october Arizona sun is right up his alley. I think it's important that they know that we know they're here, Renteria said. Anytime I have an opportunity to do it, I will continue to do it. There are some winters where I won't but for the most part we need to be interconnected, we need to know we are going to be one family at some point. For a detail-oriented manager who regularly pours in 16-hour days at the ballpark during the season, Renteria is in an unusual place as a guest speaker and observer. But rallying the troops and providing motivational speeches to foster a sense of togetherness is a bigger priority than seeing on-field success during this time for the organization. This isn't a big evaluation period according to Hahn, but they know it's the lead-up to one. It s going to be an important year. I think it s going to be a difficult year in some ways, Hahn said. It will require a fair amount of patience. Not just with the players that are pushing against the big leagues that you hear mostly about Eloy [Jimenez] and [Michael] Kopech and the expectations when they are going to be in Chicago and have an impact in Chicago. But also with some of the players you referenced who are at the A-ball level and go through growing pains as they make these adjustments and become the player we ultimately hope they will be. Outfielder Blake Rutherford, despite still being a 20-year-old who just wrapped a season in Low-A, is one of those players whose place in the White Sox's future could be heavily determined by how he responds to adjustments made during instructional league. While he's spoken positively about his work with Sox hitting coaches since he was traded, he was a little more specific about substantive efforts to catch the ball out front in his swing, which he says there's more time to fix during instructs. During the heart of the season obviously you make tweaks here and there if something's up, but I would say it's harder because you play every single day and you've got to be out there to play every single day, Rutherford said. Whereas instructs you may have a Monday game, but Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday to work on your swing and then go into a Friday game. There's more time in between games to work on your swing and work on things you're developing and take them into a game whenever you can. That was the same logic that pushed Zack Collins work to reduce the hitch in his swing at instructs. After ending the season in Double-A, he's more advanced than pretty much any member of the Sox instructional league roster and tore it up in Birmingham during the last two weeks of the season. But he knew this month offered him a unique chance to quiet the tilt in his wrists during his swing load before it became an issue at even higher levels. We've looked at video and there's definitely a difference, Collins said of his progress. It's definitely been good for me to come out here. Definitely worth my time. *** Jake Burger and Gavin Sheets slugged.409 and.365 at Low-A Kannapolis after getting drafted this summer. They were both above-average hitters for the league, and both had encouraging contact rates matching their draft day billing as hitters with polished approaches, but one look at them in person makes it pretty clear they were selected on the first day of the 2017 draft so they could hit for power, and they've been working to unlock it in Arizona. Burger is tweaking his hand movement in his swing to generate more fly balls, while Sheets is adding a bigger leg kick. When asked about whether the leg kick had released Sheets' power already, Sox hitting coordinator Mike Gellinger quickly put to bed notions of things being that simple. No. The results have not shown up in instructional league but I believe that he will by the time the next season turns around, Gellinger said. The leg kick, a little more of a leg kick actually means he's trying to get more ground on his stride. He's trying to get a little bit wider, land a little bit wider, gain a little bit more ground. Put his body in a stronger position. While both need to hit for power, Burger has the added responsibility of trying to prove he can stick at third base. Between his obviously large frame and a short-armed throwing motion (which stuck out less to me this week than it did in August), he faces a lot of doubts, but has committed to putting the extra work in to stick, and could wind up a regular at instructs in the coming years as a result. Sox field director Kirk Champion, who presides over instructional league as a whole, was unambiguous in his praise.

He s proven to us in Kannapolis and in instructional league that he can play third base and play third base at the higher levels, Champion said. I think he s clear that away, any doubts anyone had, he s shown us that going in. But just his approach and the fact that his offensively, he s doing some little adjustments. He s a pro about going about his business, his work, all those kind of things. *** Plenty of other representatives of the 2017 draft were on hand and getting familiar with one another. Fifth-round pick Tyler Johnson, a flame-throwing right-handed college closer, has been working on building up a more traditional hard, high-80s slider for late-inning relief. He struck out 37 batters in his first 25 2/3 professional innings but also walked 19, so there's control issues to work out even if the life on his fastball is clearly nasty. Luckily, he has a very open attitude toward coming in for extra work. I don't have to go to school, Johnson said. It's a lot tougher. These hitters, they're very complete and patient at the plate. Their feel for the strike zone is hard to pitch to sometimes. That's in terms of baseball, but in terms of time consumption, all you do is play baseball, so you get pretty used to it quickly. We love baseball, that's why we're here. Third-round pick Luis Gonzalez was pegged as an athletic center fielder with raw talent that outstripped his draft placement. After a slow start, hitting.314/.397/.476 in 27 games in August seemed to be a happy answer to the most pressing issue about his game, but that hasn't saved him from daily work with outfield and baserunning coordinator Aaron Rowand. He has improved dramatically in the outfield, Rowand said. From an ideology standpoint of where he's positioning himself, how we're going to do it and why, his reads and his routes and jumps, everything across the board has gotten better since he first got here. It's just a tribute to the work he's put in. Eighth-rounder Sam Abbott, an enormous high school first baseman who was deciding between baseball and a water polo scholarship when the Sox called him for a pre-draft tryout, is about as wide-eyed as you'd expect for someone who had no idea they would be a professional baseball player as recently as six months ago. Scouting director Nick Hostetler said on draft night that Abbott would likely need at least two full years at rookie ball as they worked to convert his raw strength into something that shows up in professional games, but maybe he'll need that time just to recover from the shock of having Jim Thome compliment his batting practice session during his tryout. I still can t believe it. For him to say something to me, an 18-year-old, the guy hit 600 plus homers in the show. That s unbelievable, Abbott said. I was trembling a little. Shook his hand, kind of speechless. He said Hi, I m Jim Thome,' and I was like, I know.' It was crazy. That s the kind of guy you grow up watching. Big lefty bat. Just hits home runs left and right. Great guy. Great guy, so nice. For those not putting in extra work or making tweaks to their game, instructs is also about making up time lost to injury during the season. Dylan Cease essentially used the month as a rehab assignment for his stiff right shoulder, and ended this week by throwing bullpen sessions to prove his arm is healthy enough to handle full effort, recover after a few days and sustain full effort again before he goes into an offseason routine of lifting and miming Jake Arrieta's pilates program. He's got pitchability and he's got good stuff, Sox pitching coordinator Richard Dotson said. Being healthy is always important for all these guys, especially when you're dealing with legs or anything like that. Ceiling for next year? I'm not Creskin. It would be nice if he was helping us, but we've got a lot of guys I think could help us if they continue the progress and get the opportunity. Cease's throwing partner has been lefty Ian Clarkin, who after missing all of 2015 with elbow inflammation, rolling his ankle at the start of 2017, getting traded to the Sox alongside Rutherford and promptly straining his oblique after three starts in Winston-Salem, feels healthy once again. For a guy talented enough to be the 33rd overall pick out of high school in 2013 but plagued by injuries since, the White Sox certainly seem like a good home to revive his career, and between his new teammates and new cutter, he's the picture of enthusiasm. It's finally good to stay healthy for a period of time so I can see what I got instead of having to keep rebuilding back up, Clarkin said. It's good to keep continuing on the process that I am and I feel like I'm finally starting to be who I am; starting to click, starting to throw the ball wherever I want to, no matter what pitch in any count. It's good to put a few good weeks together. ***

After missing three months with an intercostal strain, 2016 third-round pick Alex Call found himself working for time with a lot of the 2017 draftees in the Kannapolis outfield during their playoff run, and now getting extra work in during instructs alongside them as well. After a miserable rehab stint in the AZL, and a slow start in Kannapolis, Call finally got hot again in the final few weeks, hitting.360/.421/.580 in his final 13 games of the season. When I started here in the AZL, I couldn't find the barrel, Call said. I just had to make a small adjustment, it kind of continued when I made it to Kannapolis. Once I did that I finished up really strong the last three weeks or so, plus the playoffs, I was able to find my stroke and get my confidence back. Didn't think it would take that long, but that's just the way it goes. With a stacked outfield picture throughout the low minors made only more uncertain by the impending arrival of Luis Robert to the states, Call doesn't know how certain a return to High-A Winston-Salem (where he started the 2017 season) will be, but if he keeps hitting, his placement will work itself out. *** This week was witness to the first game action for Charlie Tilson since he tore his left hamstring on Aug. 2, He faces a difficult road back just due to the tremendous time off he had away from being able to face live pitching, but seemed positively overjoyed to be playing baseball again. He's not out of the woods yet. The Sox opted not to have surgery on his fractured navicular bone in his right ankle, and his time in Arizona doubles as a test of his foot before the team plans his next step. There s still a little bit of healing potentially to go, but completely not symptomatic, so being out here, being able to test it out and see how it reacts, so far I m feeling good about it, Tilson said. There s always possibilities but I m just trying to take it a day at a time and keep doing the things that are working for me. And just stay ready to play and I m pretty confident that I ll make it through this just fine. Next on the docket for the organization is instructional league at the Sox Dominican academy, which starts at the end of October. It's where Micker Adolfo is headed to get more at-bats after his left pinky is healed enough to take full swings. His breakout season was cut off on Aug. 22, and while he thinks his approach is more mature than ever, the 31.5 percent strikeout rate still has to come down before my penciling him into the 2021 lineup becomes more about confidence and less about hope. I figure that I m going to be a power type of guy and I know the strikeouts are going to come, Adolfo said. But I want to limit those and definitely be on base more and walk more so those are my next things I m going to work on this offseason. Adolfo will of course be joined by Robert at Dominican instructs, which will be overseen by Ever Magallanes. After briefly subbing in as the White Sox third base coach when Nick Capra underwent back surgery this season, Magallanes is back to serving as an instructor for the Sox international prospects, and can only communicate awe about his brief looks at Robert. He s just special. He s a special kid, Magallanes said. Power, speed, great kid. He s learning the game, playing hard. I just can t say enough good things about him. It s going to be a pleasure to see when it all comes together. How Jake Burger is working to get his offense off the ground By James Fegan / The athletic Oct. 16, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. As Jake Burger headed into his first professional offseason, the White Sox wanted him to watch video of his swing to try to find a way to generate more fly balls. One look at Burger should provide plenty of confidence that he's as strong as an ox and hits the ball hard when he connects, but he trades home runs for crisp singles unless he lofts it into the air. This was not much of an imposition. Not only does Burger regularly look at video of swing, but he has roughly 10 years of archives. Before he worked with White Sox hitting coordinator Mike Gellinger, or starred at Missouri State, his father, Mike, was rolling on his son's every at-bat. Just how my swing works and mechanically, we always take video of that. I guess one day he decided to start videotaping me and I ve gone from there, Burger said. I want to say I was 11 or 12 so that was when it was first like big. We d take videos here and there. When smartphones came around, it was a little easier to videotape it.

He didn't settle upon the idea that baseball was his primary professional focus until the middle of high school, so there's roughly four years of Jake Burger hockey scouting video floating around as well. That's probably more video coverage than his work in instructional league has garnered, where the Sox are touting real changes underway. He actually got to a few sinkers in and put them in the air, which was impressive, Gellinger said of Burger's progress. Guys throw sinkers, right-handers to a right-handed hitter they throw sinkers because they want you to hit it on the ground. That's what we want, ground ball pitchers. He got inside those balls and hit line drives. It wasn't popups or flares or anything it was line drives that he got to. It was really good to see. Burger hit.271/.335/.409 during his first taste of Low-A baseball, which is good enough for a 116 wrc+ in the sleepy offensive environment of the South Atlantic League. He struck out just 14 percent of the time, he had multiple five-hit nights once hitting for the cycle where he seemed unstoppable at the plate, and all this came tacked on the back of a full college season, which meant he pushed himself through two playoff runs. He did not have some deeply worrisome professional debut, where nothing that the White Sox saw in him showed up. But he was touted as the best right-handed power hitter in the draft by Sox scouting director Nick Hostetler, a claim that comes with an expectation of more than five home runs in 51 professional games, even with success in other areas. But the Sox know that the changes to unlock that power sometimes have to wait until the games end. During the season, it can be a little tricky because you are out there competing every day and sometimes adjustments, some adjustments take a little bit of time. It might take a week, or two weeks, Sox director of player development Chris Getz said. And through those two weeks, you might really go through some struggles, and as a competitor do you really want to do that when you are still kind of surviving but you know in the long term you are probably going to have to make a few changes. Those few changes mostly involve hand placement. Despite the sterling contact rates and bat speed, there was plenty of movement in his hands during the load of his swing, and he's been working to quiet it. It s nothing too crazy, Burger said. It s just knowing where the hands should slot and then where they should explode from. It s been good. No one likes to phrase things as a swing change or overhaul, down here, or ever, really the Sox are not looking for anyone to start from scratch and throw out elements of their game that made them appealing on draft night. But instructs are essentially monitored offseason work, where meaningful changes can be made. For a prospect as power-centered as Burger in his value and appeal, there's only so long he can go without production on the field before the scrutiny on him intensifies. So it's meaningful that when the Sox task him with a small change in his swing, Burger is comfortable and even expects to track the progress on video, rather than just feeling around for a better hand placement without looking at himself. When it's time to hit the diamond, it's not like there's not other areas to focus on. In an alternate world, where Burger obliterated professional pitching consistently right out of the gate, there's a whole other story to be written about his one-on-one time with Vance Law. There's a story about entire Arizona afternoons spent taking grounder after grounder, how Burger's committed to sticking at third base, how the White Sox believe he's already shown the chops to stick there long-term, and how he's the second-coming of Zack Collins: a power-hitting prospect who beat the odds to stay at a valuable defensive position. But we only care about that story if Burger is hitting for the power he's expected to, so that journey gets top billing for now. Former White Sox pitcher Daniel Webb dies at 28 in ATV crash By Associated Press Oct. 15, 2017 WAVERLY, Tenn. -- Daniel Webb, a former relief pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, has died in an ATV accident. He was 28. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said Webb died Saturday night. Davis said Webb's wife and two other people sustained "significant injuries" in the accident about 70 miles west of Nashville. Webb was 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 94 games for the White Sox from The right-hander pitched one inning in 2016, then had Tommy John surgery in June. He was released by the White Sox after the season and did not pitch professionally during his recovery.

"Daniel left many friends within the Chicago White Sox organization, and we are all shocked and stunned by the news," the team said in a statement. "He was a terrific young man with a full life ahead of him." Webb was drafted by Toronto in 2009 and traded to the White Sox after the 2011 season in a deal for pitcher Jason Frasor. Webb made his major league debut in September 2013 at Yankee Stadium. The first hitter he faced was Derek Jeter, and Webb walked him. Webb made 57 appearances for the White Sox in He pitched 110 innings in his career and struck out 93. Former White Sox reliever Daniel Webb killed in ATV accident By Arthur Weinstein / Sporting News Oct. 15, 2017 Former White Sox pitcher Daniel Webb died Saturday after an ATV accident. He was 28. The White Sox confirmed Webb's death Sunday. "Daniel left many friends within the Chicago White Sox organization, and we are all shocked and stunned by the news of last night's terrible accident," a White Sox statement read. "He was a terrific young man with a full life ahead of him. All thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends as they deal with today's tragic news." Nashville media outlets reported Webb was killed when an ATV he was riding rolled over about 70 miles west of Nashville. A native of Paducah, Ky., the right-hander appeared in relief in 94 games with the White Sox between 2013 and 2016, compiling a 7-5 record and 4.50 ERA. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in mid-2016, he had been rehabbing his arm, but the White Sox released him in November.
