That explanation changed somewhat following the team's sixth straight loss, with Moncada leaving the game after his second-inning groundout to third base due to a tight left hamstring, per Renteria's postgame media session. "He actually had a little bit of a sore hammy, so we took him out after the play at first," Renteria said. "He explained to me that he had a tight hammy, so I dealt with it in that way." "I felt the hamstring was a little tight, and then I told Ricky. That was why he made the decision to take me out of the game," Moncada said through interpreter Billy Russo. "Because it was the first time, I told Ricky just to be cautious about that. I felt a little tightness in the hamstring and that was why he decided to take me out of the game." The White Sox second baseman grounded out to third baseman Alex Bregman for the second out, but appeared to slow down momentarily as he moved down the line. Bregman's throw was up the line, but first baseman Yuli Gurriel was able to apply the tag to Moncada's shoulder. Renteria stresses hustling at all times, and when Leury Garcia replaced Moncada in the third, it appeared that momentary lapse cost Moncada.

Moncada acknowledged Renteria asked him about the slowdown after the play, which is when Moncada mentioned the hamstring tightness. Renteria added that it was a manager's decision to remove Moncada, but when asked if he was upset with Moncada, Renteria simply stated, "No." As for Moncada playing with the injury Sunday, Renteria gave a wait-and-see answer. Moncada seemed ready to go. "No, I don't think it's something serious," Moncada said. "I want to be in the lineup tomorrow." Saturday marked Moncada's first game this season out of the leadoff spot, batting sixth, albeit just one time. Moncada didn't seem to have a lineup spot preference, as long as he's in there. "Being a leadoff hitter or in the sixth spot, I have to do my job, and that's my focus," Moncada said. "It doesn't matter in what order of the lineup I'm playing. I have to do my job to help this team win games." Farquhar stable after ruptured brain aneurysm By Scott Merkin /MLB.com / April 21, 2018 CHICAGO -- The focus of the White Sox clubhouse Saturday centered on reliever Danny Farquhar and really nothing more, with tests revealing he suffered a brain hemorrhage during the sixth inning of Friday night's loss to the Astros at Guaranteed Rate Field. Farquhar collapsed in the White Sox dugout after facing four batters, and the additional overnight testing at Rush University Medical Center revealed that a ruptured aneurysm caused the brain bleed, according to the White Sox. Farquhar is currently stable but in critical condition in the neurosurgical ICU unit and continues to receive treatment and close monitoring by Dr. Demetrius Lopes and the neurosurgical team. There was no discussion among the White Sox about not playing Saturday night against the Astros because of what had happened to their friend, and the team hung his jersey in the bullpen. There was plenty of conversation about thoughts and prayers for the 31-year-old Farquhar, his wife, Lexi, and their three children, Madison, Landon and Liam. "It crushes us in this clubhouse, and nothing really matters baseball-wise when something like that happens," White Sox starter James Shields said. "When you see one of your brothers go down like that, it's not very fun to watch. He's such a resilient human being and we're praying for him. We hope everything goes well." "He's alive, he's got a chance and that's what I'm hanging on to," White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said. "And prayers are more necessary than talk." Additional updates will be provided by the White Sox on Farquhar's health over the coming days as appropriate. But the club also asks that the privacy of the Farquhar family be respected at this time. Social media messages of hope from around baseball quickly came in for Farquhar, including from Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and his former teams from Tampa Bay and Seattle. Houston shortstop Carlos Correa and manager AJ Hinch also talked about the tragedy hitting Farquhar during the course of Friday's game. "It really is sad. I saw something going on when I was at shortstop in the dugout, but I didn't know what it was," Correa said. "I came here to watch my video and they told me that something happened to him. I asked the clubbies here what happened to him, and they didn't know at the time. Now that I know about the aneurysm and stuff, it's really sad. I'm wishing him the best, praying for him. Hopefully he gets better soon." White Sox fans, please keep Danny and his family in your positive thoughts and prayers.

"I texted back and forth with [White Sox manager Rick Renteria], and it was a scary incident last night," Hinch said. "We could see across the way something was going on, and I think some of our guys saw him vomit, and then as the group went around him, it just became a scary scene. Then word trickles back, and then this morning getting that update is very scary. Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and him, the White Sox, the team." Right-handed reliever Gregory Infante replaced Farquhar on the active roster, with Farquhar being placed on the 10-day disabled list. Renteria met with the White Sox early on Saturday, and the team will try to move on while always carrying thoughts of hope for Farquhar, who received immediate treatment from the White Sox medical staff and EMTs on Friday. "We've got a good group of guys here and we're going to stick together," Shields said. "He's definitely stable from what we hear, but he's got a long way to go and he's fighting. One thing we know in this clubhouse is that Farqy, he's a fighter." "Pray for him, pray for his family, pray for his kids," White Sox reliever Hector Santiago said. "We're in here worrying about him, but you can only do so much from our side of it, so just pray for the family and him and hope for the best." "You don't lose sight of the reality of the circumstance and the situation he's in," said Renteria, who makes his offseason home in Temecula, Calif., as does Farquhar. "But these men know they can go out there and show him that they are thinking about him by the way they go about doing their business today." White Sox can't find rhythm with heavy hearts By Max Gelman /MLB.com/ April 21, 2018 CHICAGO -- This simply hasn't been the White Sox week. Following a snowout in Minneapolis, a sweep in Oakland and now Saturday's 10-1 loss to the Astros, the White Sox have lost six consecutive games while being outscored The White Sox also tied their franchise record with four straight contests of allowing 10 or more runs, with the other two instances occurring in May 1999 and August View Full Game Coverage "Right now, honestly, we're just in a little bit of a rut," manager Rick Renteria said. "It's just like I told the guys when I was coming in, this thing will turn. It'll turn, the thing is we have to continue to work, continue to stay positive, continue to prepare every single day, continue to give a good effort." Poor starting pitching again doomed the White Sox on Saturday, as Lucas Giolito struggled to find the strike zone in two-plus innings. Giolito finished with a career-high seven walks, including three to begin the second inning, which Josh Reddick took advantage of by hitting a grand slam to put Houston up 8-0 at the time. On the season, Giolito has given up 21 runs (20 earned) and walked 19 batters in 20 innings. "About as bad as it could get," Giolito said. "I didn't have a feel for much of anything. Seven walks, unacceptable. Put the bullpen in that situation, unacceptable. Luckily they did a really good job later after I came out of the game early. But it's one of those ones that you throw away and move onto tomorrow." Giolito added that he didn't feel as though he was trying to be too careful against the Astros' powerful lineup, but that he was just "all over the place."

Offensively, the White Sox were stuck in the mud again against another former Cy Young Award winner in Dallas Keuchel. Chicago managed only four hits off the lefty, though Trayce Thompson hit his first home run of the year in the fifth -- a solo shot to right field. Additionally, Danny Farquhar was on everyone's mind after the White Sox announced the reliever suffered a brain hemorrhage due to a ruptured aneurysm during Friday night's game. The White Sox hung Farquhar's jersey in both the dugout and bullpen, and several players inscribed his initials on their hats. "I didn't see any of [the players] putting their head down, I thought they were actually trying to play for him a little bit today," Renteria said. "I know the results weren't what we wanted, but I think they were trying to go out there and put on a good face and do the best that they could." Per the latest team update Saturday afternoon, Farquhar remains stable but in critical condition at Rush University Medical Center. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Things are getting tight: After Yoan Moncada grounded out to third base in the bottom of the second, Renteria pulled Moncada from the game after he appeared to slow down running up the line. Word was originally that Moncada was pulled in a manager's decision, but Renteria said after the game that Moncada's left hamstring tightened up. Leury Garcia replaced Moncada at second base. More >> SOUND SMART At 4-13, the White Sox are off to their worst start since Their 1-7 home record is their worst start since UP NEXT Reynaldo Lopez (0-2, 1.42 ERA) takes the hill in Sunday's series finale against the Astros at 1:10 p.m. CT. Lopez has been stellar through three starts, allowing just four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 19 innings. He has walked 11 hitters though. Lance McCullers Jr. (2-1, 5.57) goes for the Astros, who have won five games in a row. White Sox announce Danny Farquhar suffered a brain hemorrhage By Vinnie Duber /NBC Sports Chicago/ April 21, 2018 White Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar suffered a brain hemorrhage during Friday night s game, tests revealed, after he passed out in the dugout and was taken to the hospital during the sixth inning. The team announced Saturday that Farquhar is stable but in critical condition at RUSH University Medical Center. Tests have revealed that Chicago White Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar suffered a brain hemorrhage during the sixth inning of last night s game, and additional overnight testing at RUSH University Medical Center revealed that a ruptured aneurysm caused the brain bleed, the announcement read. Currently stable but in critical condition in the neurosurgical ICU unit at RUSH, Farquhar continues to receive treatment and close monitoring by Dr. Demetrius Lopez and the neurosurgical team. The White Sox will provide additional updates on Farquhar s health over the coming days as appropriate, but the club also asks that you respect the privacy of the Farquhar family at this time. Thank you. The White Sox later placed Farquhar on the disabled list and called up Gregory Infante.

Teammates hoping for best as Danny Farquhar is stable but in critical condition following brain hemorrhage By Vinnie Duber /MLB.com/ April 21, 2018 It s shocking. It s sad. Don Cooper s two-sentence assessment of the feeling in the White Sox clubhouse was as apt as any. White Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar remains in critical condition at RUSH University Medical Center after suffering a brain hemorrhage in Friday night s game against the Houston Astros. Farquhar passed out in the dugout in the sixth inning and was carried out and taken to the hospital. Saturday morning, the team updated his status, saying that tests revealed that a ruptured aneurysm caused the brain bleed and that he s undergoing continued treatment. His teammates and coaches offered their thoughts and prayers as they got ready to play another game Saturday night, baseball certainly not the most important thing on their minds. It crushes us in this clubhouse, pitcher James Shields said. And nothing really matters baseball-wise when something like that happens, you know? When you see one of your brothers go down like that, it s not very fun to watch, and he s such a resilient human being and we re praying for him. We hope everything goes well with that. Baseball doesn t matter when it comes to something like that. All that matters is family and life, and like I said, he s a brother of ours, he s a great teammate and you don t ever want to see one of your brothers go through something like that. We re praying for him. Farquhar, who joined the White Sox in the middle of last season, has a clubhouse reputation as a good guy, a funny guy who has made a positive impression on his teammates. He s awesome. Teammate, clubhouse guy, all-around just a great guy, good family guy. Just a good friend, pitcher Hector Santiago said. Just kind of sucks how everything just went down like that, unexpected like that. It s something you can t control. I mean he just pitched in a big league game and a couple minutes later he s lying on the ground, so it s a very worrisome situation and it sucks, but you just pray for him and hope for him to come back soon and hopefully everything works out great. He s a great kid. Hard worker, manager Rick Renteria said. When you look at him he probably had to battle his whole career to do what he s doing. Has a very good arm. Hes a nice man with a beautiful wife and kids. And just a nice guy to have around. As Renteria alluded, Farquhar s baseball journey has been an eventful one. He was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2008, traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2010, traded back to the Blue Jays the following year and made his big league debut in September of The next summer, he was claimed off waivers by the A s, then claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees two weeks later, then traded to the Seattle Mariners a month after that. In 2015, he made seven trips between the Mariners and their Triple-A affiliate. The following offseason, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, and he made seven more trips between the bigs and Triple-A in Released by the Rays last summer, he was signed by the White Sox and made his first appearance with the South Siders in August. He logged 14.1 innings in a White Sox uniform in 2017 and pitched eight this season, including the 0.2 he threw Friday. Even with all that moving around between the majors and minors, he s pitched in parts of seven different big league seasons.

Farquhar s teammates and coaches said they hope that perseverance will help him in this situation one that s far more important than anything that s happened on the baseball field. As of right now it s not looking great, Shields said. He s definitely stable from what we hear, but he s got a long way to go and he s fighting. So, one thing I know is that Farqy, he s a fighter, man. So again we re praying for him and his family. Our thoughts are with him and his family. Listen, all of the kids that come into your life, I don t know if they come into our lives, we come into their lives or our worlds combine. But I believe things kind of happen for a reason, Cooper said. You want their pitching and baseball lives to be wonderful. You want them to have the careers they are looking for, and that would certainly hold true outside of baseball. I know this: He s alive, he s got a chance and that s what I m hanging on to. And prayers are more necessary than talk. Daily White Sox prospects update: Michael Kopech strikes out 10 in latest outing By Vinnie Duber/ NBC Sports Chicago / April 21, 2018 Triple-A Charlotte Michael Kopech struck out 10 despite lasting just five innings and not getting the win Friday night. His ERA stands at 2.40 after giving up three runs. He's up to 21 strikeouts through three outings at Triple-A this season. Charlie Tilson and Casey Gillaspie each had a hit in the 4-1 loss. Class A Winston-Salem Joel Booker continued his scorching start, picking up three more hits, including a triple, and raising his batting average to.364 on the season. Luis Alexander Basabe also tripled, walked twice, scored two runs and drove in a run in a 10-3 loss. Double-A Birmingham Ian Clarkin allowed four earned runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out only one in his 5.1 innings of work. Seby Zavala had two hits and drove in two runs in a 7-2 loss. Class A Kannapolis Luis Gonzalez had a hit in a 4-1 win. The start to Lucas Giolito's 2018 season isn't getting any better: Saturday was 'about as bad as it could get' By Vinnie Duber/ NBC Sports Chicago / April 21, 2018 Lucas Giolito has walked 19 hitters in just four starts. Things are not going well. That diagnosis can apply to just about every aspect of the 2018 White Sox so far. They lost in a blowout again Saturday night, this time by a 10-1 score, to drop to 4-13 on the season and 2-13 in their last 15 games. They ve been outscored in their last five games and 24-3 in the last 28 innings. None of that is good. But this rebuilding era, this developmental season was expected to have its share of bumps and bruises. What wasn t expected was the poor play, to this point, of Giolito, who made such a great impression in his seven big league starts at the end of last season and during a dominant spring training.

On Opening Day, he said he felt like a new pitcher. He has been quite different in his first four starts of the regular season, but surely not in the way he hoped. He s got 19 walks, just nine strikeouts and a 9.00 ERA. Saturday was his poorest outing yet: nine runs allowed, seven batters walked and just six outs recorded. If you re displeased with Giolito s outing, know that he s not happy about it either. Yeah, about as bad as it could get, he said after the game. I didn t have a feel for much of anything. Seven walks, unacceptable. Put the bullpen in that situation, unacceptable. It s one of those ones that you throw away and move onto tomorrow and just continue to work on it. The problem is that every outing Giolito has made so far this season has approached that description. Against the Kansas City Royals, he walked four and gave up three runs in six innings. Against the Detroit Tigers, he walked three and gave up five runs in 5.2 innings. Against the Minnesota Twins, he walked five and gave up three earned runs in 6.1 innings. Conditions have been brutal, obviously, with cold weather crippling much of Major League Baseball during this brutal first month of the season. All three of those outings came in very cold conditions, and Saturday s game wasn t exactly played in a tropical heat, either. But the walks are piling up. No pitcher in baseball has issued as many free passes as Giolito. At this point I just need to kind of get my flow back, he said. I feel like my delivery, I m not repeating much of anything. Very out of sync. So just need to go out there and kind of let it loose a little bit. His first-pitch strikes were down, obviously. Kind of hard to work with batsmen when you re behind in the count, manager Rick Renteria said. He tried to find his feel. I think the walks were the biggest thing. You ve got to command the zone, and hopefully as we continue to move forward and he continues to pitch, he continues to progress and improves on that aspect. In five days, we ll throw him back out there and see where he s at. As the losses keep coming for this team, they are easy enough to explain away as a product of the rebuild. Young players are spending this season developing at the major and minor league levels, and that doesn t mean a juggernaut on the field on the South Side. But the silver linings to all this losing are supposed to be progression of those young players. We ve seen plenty of positives from the likes of Tim Anderson and Matt Davidson and Reynaldo Lopez at the major league level. And obviously each day brings more news of the fabulous feats the stocked farm system is accomplishing. Giolito, though, is expected to be a pitcher that makes visible strides. He was so impressive at the end of last summer, throughout this spring, that he entered this season, in the opinion of plenty, as the best pitcher on the 25-man roster. And that still might be the case, but his performance hasn t been the best. Neither have the results. Something hasn t carried over from the spring, from the end of last year, and Giolito is still searching for what brought those high expectations in the first place. Obviously the mechanics have kind of gone away from where I was, he said. And on top of that just pressing and pressing to make it right again instead of just letting it loose. As Renteria said, Giolito will get another go real soon. But which Giolito will we see? White Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar in critical condition after suffering ruptured aneurysm By Colleen Kane / Chicago Tribune/ April 21, 2018 A white No. 43 White Sox jersey hung from the bullpen fence Saturday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Visible to much of the ballpark, Danny Farquhar s uniform served as a striking reminder that the relief pitchers seated behind it and the rest of the Sox had their minds on something bigger than baseball during their 10-1 loss to the Astros. Farquhar collapsed in the dugout after throwing 15 pitches in a relief outing in Friday night s 10-0 loss to the Astros. He suffered a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm and as of Saturday afternoon was stable but in critical condition in the intensive-care unit at Rush University Medical Center under the care of Dr. Demetrius Lopes and the Rush neurosurgical team. Sox players met with manager Rick Renteria in the afternoon to receive the latest updates before resuming their normal baseball activities to prepare for the night game. They left a quiet clubhouse to take batting practice and play catch, but players said their minds were on Farquhar. They wrote D.F. 43 in silver on the front left side of their black caps. It crushes us in this clubhouse, pitcher James Shields said. And nothing really matters baseball-wise when something like that happens, you know? When you see one of your brothers go down like that, it s not very fun to watch. He s such a resilient human being, and we re praying for him. The commotion in the dugout was the first sign something was wrong Friday night. Farquhar entered to relieve Shields with one out in the sixth inning and faced four batters, giving up a double and a home run and recording the final two outs of the inning. Astros manager A.J. Hinch said his players saw Farquhar vomit in the dugout. Sox pitching coach Don Cooper called it shocking when Farquhar lost consciousness, and Renteria said he attempted to keep Farquhar from falling over until trainers and emergency medical technicians quickly surrounded Farquhar, carried him into the clubhouse and loaded him into an ambulance bound for the hospital. The Sox said Farquhar regained consciousness Friday night, but they did not say whether he had undergone any surgical procedures since then. A Rush spokesman referred to the Sox for all updates. When he left here he had a strong heartbeat, a good pulse and he was breathing well, Renteria said. EMTs came in and made sure they gave him oxygen and they got him on the gurney, and before he left he was conscious. He was able to speak to his wife a little bit. Right now he s being treated, and hopefully it s all going to be good. Renteria and his players agreed it was fortunate that the incident occurred where Farquhar could receive medical treatment immediately. Pitcher Hector Santiago noted the life of a baseball player means a lot of airplanes and hotel rooms, where it might have been more difficult to take quick action. Astros 10, White Sox 1 Photos from the White Sox-Astros game at Guaranteed Rate Field on Saturday, April 21, Farquhar, 31, is in his seventh major-league season and his second with the Sox after signing as a free agent midway through He has pitched in 23 games for the Sox with a 4.84 ERA. The Sox placed him on the 10-day disabled list Saturday and recalled Gregory Infante from Triple-A Charlotte. Renteria recalled Saturday that when they met, Farquhar told the manager he had been Farquhar s favorite player growing up in Florida. Renteria called him a great kid, hard worker. Farquhar is married with three children. You want their pitching and baseball lives to be wonderful, Cooper said. You want them to have the careers they are looking for, and that would certainly hold true outside of baseball. I know this: He s alive, he s got a chance and that s what I m hanging on to. And prayers are more necessary than talk.

A long list of major-league teams and former teammates shared get-well wishes on Twitter and Instagram, some using a #DannyStrong hashtag. It s certainly a heavy heart type of day when one of your teammates is dealing with that, and certainly as a baseball family we all understand it, Hinch said. Danny has been around the league, so I m sure there are a lot of guys that know him and will root for him. Sox players texted in a group chat Saturday morning to find out whether they could visit Farquhar in the hospital, according to Santiago, but ultimately they arrived at the ballpark to prepare for the game. Renteria said there was no discussion about postponing Saturday s game. The Sox said they played for Farquhar. It s tough, Saturday s starting pitcher Lucas Giolito said after the game. It s on all of our minds, but I mean once you step between the lines you just compete to the best of your ability. But from what I'm hearing he s stable. He s doing well at the hospital, so hopefully we ll get more info soon. A tough day gets worse for White Sox in another blowout loss to Astros By Paul Sullivan / Chicago Tribune / April 21, 2018 From the start of Saturday night s game against the Astros, it seemed clear the White Sox players heads were elsewhere. With reliever Danny Farquhar hospitalized and in critical but stable condition after suffering a brain hemorrhage during Friday night s game, you couldn t blame anyone for lacking the focus necessary to compete at the highest level. Still, the game had to be played, and the White Sox had to try to find a way to get through the night. As James Shields said beforehand, Farquhar would probably want us to keep rolling. So the Sox took the field against the defending world champions, hoping to stop their losing streak, honor their friend and teammate and provide a little bit of entertainment for a decent turnout of 23,908 on a cool night on the South Side. But this was one of those rare nights when the Sox didn t bother to show up, and the outcome was decided before most of the crowd had settled in. The Astros scored four runs against Lucas Giolito in the first and four more in the second en route to a 10-1 victory. The Sox have allowed 10 or more runs in four straight games. With one game left in the series, the Sox have been outscored 20-1 by the Astros, looking like a bunch of backups scrimmaging against the varsity. They ve lost six straight games and 13 of their last 15. They re 1-7 at home for the first time since 1971, and their 4-13 start is their worst since 1968, when they lost 95 games under three managers. Sox starting pitchers are 1-10 with a major-league-worst 6.80 ERA, with the only victory coming from Shields on opening day in Kansas City. With an ERA of 9.00 after four starts, Giolito (0-3) suddenly has joined fellow starter Carson Fulmer in the rebuild dog house. He looked out of sorts from the beginning Saturday, allowing seven walks, five hits and nine earned runs in two innings. Of his 72 pitches, 31 were strikes. The Astros batted around in the four-run first before Giolito walked the bases loaded to start the second. A grand slam to Josh Reddick made it 8-0, and the Sox were toast.

Giolito admitted he didn t have a feel for much of anything, calling his performance unacceptable. He refused to use Farquhar s situation as an excuse for his or the Sox s poor performance. It s obvious that the Astros have enjoyed schooling the Sox, who hope the series at least has provided some teachable moments along the way. One day after shortstop Tim Anderson was criticized for overexuberence by Astros ace Justin Verlander, Yoan Moncada was mysteriously yanked by manager Rick Renteria in the third inning after not running hard on a grounder. At the time, the Sox announced it as a manager s decision and said there was no injury. After the game, Renteria said it was a hamstring injury, but he didn t say which one. Of course it was my decision, Renteria said. He said he had a bad hammy. So he wasn t upset with Moncada? No, the manager replied. The Sox later announced it was the left hamstring. When Moncada finally emerged from the clubhouse, he said Renteria pulled him after he told him it was sore. He said he slowed down because he didn t want to pull it but wouldn t need any time off. Renteria had inserted Anderson in the leadoff spot on Saturday against Astros left-hander Dallas Keuchel, moving Moncada down to the six hole. Moncada had led off every game until Saturday, and his.212 average was second-worst among American League leadoff men. But Renteria said they only wanted to give him a little break and still liked him in the leadoff spot. But Moncada may get a longer break than he d like if he doesn t hustle on every play. You can t use Ricky s boys don t quit as a marketing slogan if everyone doesn t follow the script. The Anderson-Verlander incident from Friday was overshadowed by the Farquhar story, and Astros manager A.J. Hinch downplayed it on Saturday. There were a couple disagreements out there, (but) it seemed like that never really escalated a ton, Hinch said. We all have our natural opinions on situations like that. You can argue stealing (on) 3-0 and then celebrating after a walk, to just the talking and banter back and forth.... I know (Anderson) wasn t happy with (Jose) Altuve standing at second base for some reason, which is not his job. And then he got picked off and ended up in the rundown. Competition will bring out a little bit of talk here and there. Whatever. The Sox showed no fight Saturday, but Renteria said Farquhar s situation did not play into the loss. Not really, Renteria said. Listen, right now honestly we re just in a little bit of a rut. We re not getting any pitching and we re not doing a whole lot of hitting, we re not scoring a lot of runs. It s kind of a perfect storm for any ballclub. Extra innings: Fulmer, who has a 7.59 ERA, pitched an inning of mop-up duty Friday but is still scheduled to start Tuesday against the Mariners.... The Sox called up reliever Gregory Infante from Triple-A Charlotte.... Catcher Kevan Smith (left ankle) was reinstated from the DL and optioned to Charlotte.

Yoan Moncada hurt, Lucas Giolito awful in White Sox latest ugly loss By David Just/ Chicago Sun Times / April 21, 2018 Manager Rick Renteria pulled second baseman Yoan Moncada out of the White Sox 10-1 loss Saturday to the Astros after the second inning because of a sore left hamstring. Moncada grounded out to third baseman Alex Bregman in the second and said he felt tightness while running to first base. It was the first time, Moncada said. Because it was the first time, I told Ricky just to be cautious about that. I felt a little tightness in the hamstring, and that was why he decided to take me out. Moncada said he doesn t think the injury is anything serious and hopes to be in the lineup Sunday. Pitching woes continue Right-hander Lucas Giolito allowed five hits and seven walks on the way to yielding nine earned runs in two-plus innings. The poor outing continued an unfortunate trend for Sox starters, who are a combined 1-10 with a 6.80 ERA this season. It was about as bad as it could get, Giolito said. I didn t have a feel for much of anything. Seven walks, unacceptable. Put the bullpen in that situation, unacceptable. Giolito gave up a two-run ground-rule double to Marwin Gonzalez with two outs in the first that gave the Astros a 4-0 lead. An inning later, he walked the bases loaded and gave up a grand slam to Josh Reddick. At this point, I just need to get my flow back, Giolito said. I feel like with my delivery, I m not repeating much of anything. Very out of sync. Sox pitchers have allowed 10 runs in four consecutive games for only the third time in franchise history. The dubious feat also happened in 1999 and Salty Verlander Astros right-hander Justin Verlander took offense to shortstop Tim Anderson s over-aggressive play during the Sox 10-0 loss Friday. Anderson singled in the fifth to break up Verlander s no-hitter, then tried to steal second on a 3-0 count to outfielder Avisail Garcia. Anderson slid into the base and celebrated, even though it was ball four to Garcia. He [tries to steal] on 3-0 in a 5-0 game, that s probably not great baseball, Verlander told the media afterward. Maybe it is, maybe it isn t, I don t know. But he celebrated that, though. And it s like: Hey, I m not worried about you right now. It s 5-0, I m giving a high leg kick, I know you can steal. But I m trying to get this guy out at the plate. Later in the inning, Verlander managed to catch Anderson off second with a pickoff attempt. Anderson made it back to the bag after a rundown, but catcher Omar Narvaez was thrown out as the trailing runner. Verlander said he made a comment to Anderson after the play. Another bad baseball play, Verlander said. Very thankful that he gave me an out. That s what I said, and he didn t like that comment. But, hey, that s not my fault; that s his fault.

Anderson leads off Renteria moved Anderson to the leadoff spot for the first time this season and shuffled Moncada down to sixth. It was the first time Moncada batted anywhere but leadoff this season. White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar suffered brain hemorrhage in dugout By Jon Greenberg/ The Athletic / April 21, 2018 White Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar is in stable but critical condition at a local hospital after suffering a brain hemorrhage Friday night in the dugout during the sixth inning. The White Sox updated Farquhar's condition Saturday afternoon. According to the team, Farquhar is currently in the neurosurgical ICU at RUSH University Medical Center because of a ruptured aneurysm that caused a brain bleed. In the bottom of the sixth inning Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field, a crowd formed around someone in the White Sox dugout. As TV cameras aired the footage on NBC Sports Chicago, you could see reliever Farquhar, who had just pitched in the top of the inning, being carried into the clubhouse. Farquhar passed out, the White Sox soon announced, and was attended to by team medical personnel and onsite emergency medical technicians before being taken to the hospital for treatment and testing. Farquhar was conscious on the way to the hospital, White Sox manager Rick Renteria said after the team's 10-0 loss to Houston. It takes your breath away a little bit, because one of your guys is down there and you have no idea what's going on, Renteria said. Medical staff was there right away the whole time. They called in to the EMTs and somebody was caring for him before they got up. That was pretty scary, to be honest with you, starting pitcher James Shields said Friday night. I don't really know the full extent of the situation, to be honest with you. I do know he wasn't conscious when he left [the clubhouse]. But from what I'm hearing right now, he's responding to questions and they're doing some further tests right now. So we're all praying for him. Farquhar is a 31-year-old right-handed pitcher who signed with the Sox last July. The White Sox put Farquhar on the 10-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Gregory Infante for Saturday's game. White Sox try to continue on in wake of terrifying Danny Farquhar news By James Fegan/ The Athletic / April 21, 2018 It crushes us as a clubhouse. James Shields standing in front of an empty, silent White Sox clubhouse, which was loud and vibrant even throughout a winless road trip, didn't reveal anything that wasn't obvious walking into the home locker room at Guaranteed Rate Field Saturday. But by the somber, resigned expressions he and Héctor Santiago wore as they sat at the ready by their lockers, they both had assumed the responsibility to try to put words to the terror every one of the White Sox feels for Danny Farquhar. Nothing really matters baseball-wise when something like that happens, you know? Shields said. When you see one of your brothers go down like that, it s not very fun to watch. Minutes before Shields began speaking, the White Sox announced the news that had been clearly hanging over the room for a while. Farquhar is in critical condition at Rush University Medical Center. He passed out after finishing the sixth inning Friday night not from dehydration, or from a simple fainting

spell, but from a brain hemorrhage brought on by a ruptured aneurysm. He's stable, but it's a lifethreatening matter, or at least it may have been if not for the quick medical response he received. Despite Farquhar being conscious as he left, his condition is at a point where everyone who witnessed him collapse in the dugout Friday including some Astros players who said they saw Farquhar vomit before he lost consciousness has to weigh whether the scary scene was actually a stroke of good fortune. It was lucky that it happened here, we were able to get him over to the hospital pretty quick, said Santiago, his locker neighbor throughout spring training. You think about it with our lifestyle, you know, if it happens on the plane or in a hotel room by himself, so luckily it happened here, they were able to treat him quick and get him over to the hospital. Farquhar's mother and his wife, with whom he has three young children, were both in attendance at Friday's game, for what must have been a transcendently horrible experience. But the alternative to their private horror playing out on live television Farquhar laying unattended while his brain bled conjures awful possibilities. I think that was probably the key to his being able to get treated, manager Rick Renteria said. Like I said when he left here he had a strong heartbeat, a good pulse and he was breathing well. EMTs came in and made sure they gave him oxygen and they got him on the gurney and before he left he was conscious. He was able to speak to his wife a little bit yesterday. Right now he s being treated and hopefully it s all going to be good. Farquhar, 31, was not featured on any big promotional posters for the White Sox to hype up the 2018 season. He's been with the Sox, the sixth organization of his career, just since last July, and spent three weeks in Triple-A before becoming a fixture in Chicago. Playing a position at which anyone under 6-foot-2 runs the risk of being labeled short, Farquhar stands 5-foot-9. When you look at him, Renteria said, He probably had to battle his whole career to do what he s doing. And yet, despite all the factors that would make him anonymous, Farquhar is sharp, strikingly funny, insightful and kind in a way that can't be ignored (he would make sport of strutting into the clubhouse in Glendale throughout spring training and announcing that he was declining all interviews to a bewildered gathering of cameramen who didn't know he was). Half-Venezuelan on his mother's side, Farquhar speaks fluent Spanish, and routinely his locker is placed as a bridge between the would-be clubhouse divide of English and Spanish-speaking players. Having played for 20 percent of the teams in the league, he has a sort of universalist baseball perspective and the resilience of someone who has endured the throes of being sent down, released, traded, signed and called back up again. Funny Danny, Renteria said, breaking into a grin when asked about his clubhouse presence. I told you guys a story when he first came over we met him in Texas. [Pitching coach Don Cooper] and I were just talking about it today. He comes in and says, 'You know you were my favorite player growing up,' And Coop says, 'There you go kissing a little ' He s a great kid. It's comforting somewhat to think about all the reasons Farquhar is liked, all the funny anecdotes he's provided, and why he matters to his teammates, but it starts to feel like the typical treatment of someone who has died. But Farquhar hasn't died, he's fighting for his life, and his teammates are trying to focus on a baseball game while knowing that, with his initials and number written on their game caps.

He d probably want us to keep rolling, get some wins and fight on on the baseball field, Shields said. As of right now it s not looking great. He s definitely stable from what we hear, but he s got a long way to go and he s fighting. So, one thing we know in this clubhouse is that Farqy, he s a fighter, man. So again we re praying for him and his family. There was never any talk of postponing a game in response, and the Sox have not even had the chance to coordinate a team visit to the hospital for Farquhar. For now they're just proceeding as normal, despite the horrible moment they all witnessed in their dugout. It s not something that happens an awful lot, Cooper of the scene. It s shocking. It s sad. My prayers are with Danny, his family and the doctors that are treating him. That s it. I know this: He s alive, he s got a chance and that s what I m hanging on to. And prayers are more necessary than talk.
