6 Outfield Coach - Facilitator Guide Instruction Beginner Outfielding Module Topic: Introduction Time: 30 min Intent Introduce yourself and reflect on your experiences in the program. Review the structure of the NCCP program briefly and where the beginning Outfielding module fits in as far as the Coaching Pathway model. Then open with an exercise to introduce coaches to one another and to create a comfortable atmosphere. Emphasize that the processes of facilitation are to help guide the participants in a direction of self learning while understanding the processes of critical thinking in an adult learning atmosphere. Stress that the workshop has been developed to have participants be active. Expected Outcomes Coaches will Be able to understand and explain the techniques involved with identifying and teaching to any baseball athlete the proper introductory mechanics involved with Outfielding. Be able to demonstrate the fundamental ingredients of the proper introductory mechanics involved with Outfielding. Contents 1. Introduction Facilitator and Coaches 2. Program Purpose and Process 3. 8 Ice Breaker 2 Truths & a Lie A different kind of get-to-know-you activity which is engages and challenges each group member in a fun way. Useful as an icebreaker, e.g. can be used as an opener for a workshop/conference. 1. For large groups (e.g., 30+), it is best to split into smaller group sizes. 2. Hand out paper and pens (or if participants bring their own, that's fine) 3. Explain that in this activity each person writes two truths and a lie about him/herself. After the group will try to guess each other's lie. The goal is to: a) convince others that your lie is truth (and that one of your truths is the lie) and b) to correctly guess other people's lies. Allow approx. ~5+ minutes for writing 2 truths & a lie - this isn't easy for a lot of people - there will some scribbling out, etc. The slower people will probably need to be urged along to "put anything you can think of" down. Allocate 5-8 minutes, but you will probably need to urge people along. Announce that members will walk around and chat to one another, like a cocktail party, and ask about each other's truths and lies. The goal is to quiz each about each statement to help determine which the truths are and which is the lie, whilst trying to convince other people into thinking that your own lie is a truth. At the end facilitator asks each member to read their three statements one by one, as others guess or vote. The facilitator will need to help each person out, especially initially until the basic format is understood. 8

9 Outfield Coach - Facilitator Guide Instruction Beginner Outfielding Module Section 1 Topic: Identify Qualities of a Good Outfielder: 15 minutes Intent Working in pairs, members will discuss and identify those qualities that they feel are necessary to successfully play an outfield position. Objectives: 1. Coaches will have the opportunity to dialogue about the physical and mental aspects of playing the outfield position 2. Interact with others to be able to listen to different opinions Section and Time Facilitator s Notes and Key Points Resources Needed Working in pairs 5 8 minutes Divide the large group members into pairs by: Age youngest to oldest. Pairs are made by selecting one from each end, working toward the middle. Refer to workbook page 5 Use PowerPoint slide 4 to present, slide 5 for answers Large Group 5 minutes Pair with oldest member will put their #1 quality on a sheet at the front of the class. Going around the room, each pair will submit one (1 only) quality at a time, adding to the list. Go around the room a second time to get all qualities on the list. Large Group 5 minutes Questions and/or Comments 9

10 Outfield Coach - Facilitator Guide Instruction Beginner Outfielding Module Section 2 Topic: Outfielding Mechanics: 125 minutes Intent Individuals should be organized in groups in order to allow for discussion by group members. The approach should be to emphasize basic fundamental movements and skills. The purpose of the workshop will be to identify the key points to teaching outfielders. It is expected that coaches will be actively involved in the demonstrations and drills, to perform the drills presented and to present drills to group members. Expected Outcomes Coaches will 1. Discuss Pregame and During Game conditions, considerations as a matter of preparation 2. Understand and discuss the mechanics as they relate to outfielding o Fielding groundballs o Fielding groundballs to either side o Fielding groundballs and throwing o Catching flyballs o Catching flyballs to either side or overhead o Catching flyballs and throwing 10

11 Section and Time Facilitator s Notes and Key Points Resources Needed Small Group Activity 15 minutes Small Group Activity 40 minutes Each group member will take one of the considerations and relate an experience he/she had (e.g. outfielder not realizing he was playing the sun field and did not take sunglasses to his position in the first inning the first pitch to the first batter in the game was a routine flyball to him and he lost it in the sun) Each member from the small groups will explain and demonstrate to other group members the following Outfielding Fundamentals: Ready position and Approaching routine groundballs Proper technique for throwing a baseball Fielding position (routine groundballs) Approach to flyballs and Fielding position (routine flyballs) Each group member will generate key points and/or act as observer in the presentation and assist with the delivery Workbook page 6 Ready Position PowerPoint slide 8 Workbook page 7 Throwing PowerPoint slide 9 Workbook page 7 Groundballs PowerPoint slide 10 Flyballs PowerPoint slide 11 Large Group 5 minutes Debrief this is Initiation Level information, but insure that all members are clear and agree 11

Coaches will be able to share a drill with other coaches 2. Coaches will be able to actively explain, demonstrate and organize a drill 3. Coaches will be exposed to a variety of drills presented by other coaches Section and Time Facilitator s Notes and Key Points Resources Needed Large Group Activity 10 minutes Large Group Activity 75 minutes Large Group 5 minutes Facilitator will explain, demonstrate and organize the drill presented in the Coach Workbook (or another drill of choice). Coaches are given time to either work separately or together to design a drill. Coaches present a drill to the other coach members. Give an opportunity for coaches to ask any questions and to review what has been done. Any gaps can be handled by referring the coaches to additional resources. Expected Outcomes Coaches will Review the NCCP outcomes for this workshop and be informed on what is expected in any evaluation process Provide feedback regarding the value of the information and the quality of the material and presentation Contents 1.
