2 1 Title Mini Tennis Coaching 2 Code N Level 5 4 Value 2 5 Purpose This module aims to provide learners with the skills and experience necessary to bring beginners from mini tennis to midi tennis and to develop these players technically, tactically, physically and psychologically through Phase 1 of the Tennis Ireland Player Development Pathway. 6 Preferred Entry Level FETAC Level 4, Leaving Certificate or equivalent 7 Special Requirements Providers: Learners: The content and delivery for this module must comply with the criteria outlined in the National Coaching Development Programme. The prior approval of Tennis Ireland is required. Evidence of this approval must be displayed using the approval form at the end of this module descriptor. Learners must be 18 years of age or over on completion of the module. 8 General Aims This module aims to enable the learner to: 8.1 Develop their tennis playing standard so that he or she can develop within the sport and progress in coaching 8.2 Assist players in making the transition from mini-tennis to miditennis as outlined in Phase 1 of the Tennis Ireland player development Pathway 8.3 Assist with coaching in schools, clubs or in parks tennis 8.4 Demonstrate Tennis Irelands Good practice guidelines for working with children

4 Unit 4 Mental Capacities assist participants to increase self-esteem through an emphasis on personal improvement set achievable goals for participants develop a positive attitude to winning and losing Develop participants confidence in executing basic technical and tactical skills encourage participants to co-operate with each other Unit 5 Physical Capacities Develop fundamental movement skills Implement exercises to improve throwing and catching skills Implement exercises to develop participants agility, balance, coordination and speed Integrate physical components into a dynamic warm-up appropriate to the age and ability of the participants Unit 6 Lifestyle capacities Promote involvement in multi-sports Apply aspects of safety in relation to the game Encourage correct nutrition and hydration practice Unit 7 Personal capacities demonstrate a positive approach to the concept of fair play Promote FUN through participation in sport Instill a positive attitude by the participants Demonstrate good teamwork and interaction skills Unit 8 Coaching Capacities plan and conduct an effective group coaching session, recognising the need for FUN, participation, and progress
5 assist, instruct and provide feedback on specific topics display awareness of the major issues relating to safety explain the need to integrate participants with disabilities into activities explain the role of communication in the coaching process identify the qualities which contribute to effective coaching Observe participants during activities and provide positive feedback Unit 9 Child Protection demonstrate an understanding of principles underlying the Code of Ethics of Good Practice in Children s Sport
6 11 Assessment Summary Tennis Competencies mandatory Practical Coaching (logbook) 100% 11.1 Technique Tennis Competencies Format The tennis competencies should be performed to a level which will enable the candidate to appreciate their role in the context of the game and demonstrate them in assisting with mini tennis programmes 11.2 Technique Practical Coaching Weighting 100% Format The examination will be based on teaching a group of four mini tennis pupils [age 6-9] The examination will be 30 minutes in duration The format of the examination will be as follows: welcome; warm-up; physical capacity; technical capacity; wrap-up 12. Performance Criteria 12.1 Tennis Competencies The competencies to be displayed are listed on the Individual Candidate Marking Sheet 1. Successful demonstration of the skills will be required on three out of five attempts Practical Coaching The candidate will be marked according to the performance criteria set out in the Individual Candidate Marking Sheet Grading Pass 50%-64% Merit 65%-79% Distinction 80%-100%

Indicate with a tick where the candidate can perform the skills satisfactorily. Successful completion will be required on three out of five attempts. Assessment Criteria Competent 1. Rally forehand/ forehand 10 shots 2. Rally backhand/ backhand 10 shots 3. Serve to 2 different directions (advantage and deuce court) 4. Volley from net to player at baseline: forehand volley 10 shots backhand volley 10 shots 5. Rally from baseline to net player 10 shots 6. Send forehand 2 different distances using height 7. Send backhand volley 2 different directions 8. Receive a ball at two different directions (groundstrokes) 9. Receive a ball at two different distances (forehand) 10. Receive high and low balls on volley 11. Demonstrate ability to hit an attacking shot using one or more of the five ball controls 12. 10 EVIDENCE OF APPROVAL TENNIS IRELAND MINI TENNIS COACHING A special requirement of this module is that the provider must secure the approval of Tennis Ireland. To apply for approval, complete the form below and send it to Tennis Ireland. Once approved, Tennis Ireland will return a signed copy to you. The signed copy should be held in the centre as evidence of approval and should be available for the FETAC External Examiner. This process must take place in conjunction with normal FETAC application procedure. This form is evidence that Tennis Ireland has approved this centre to run the module Mini Tennis Coaching.
