1 Year group: 7 Netball Tier Level 3-5 Length Outwitting an Opponent Unit description Pupils will learn to use basic principles of play when selecting and applying tactics for defending and attacking. Pupils will develop the skills necessary to outwit opponents. Passing, receiving, shooting, intercepting and beating an opponent will be developed through small sided games and conditional situations. Demonstrating high quality performances and accurate replication will be assessed. 6/7 weeks Learning objectives Level or Grade Learning outcomes Objectives: To experience a variety of a competitive team and individual games working in small sided and modified versions of the game of netball Adapt and refine existing skills and apply them to new situations. To recognise and explain the importance of getting ready for games; follow appropriate warm-up routines; identify the main aspects of a good performance; recognise weaknesses; suggest how a performance could be improved. To recognise the importance of rules and to apply them. Level 3-4 Anticipated learning outcomes: 1. Pupils will learn to use basic principles of play when selecting and applying tactics for defending and attacking. Pupils will develop the skills necessary to outwit opponents. Passing, receiving, shooting, intercepting and beating an opponent will be developed through small sided games and conditional situations. Demonstrating high quality performances and accurate replication will be assessed. 2. Pupils will develop an understanding the role of each player and areas of responsibility 3. Pupils will evaluate their own and others strength and weaknesses in netball and suggest area for improvement. (Peer coaching, what makes good questioning/demos & targeted differentiated questioning).
2 Prior knowledge It is helpful if the pupils have experienced a passing game. some understanding of the principles of attack and defence. used rules and conventions for games. 5 Developing passing Shoulder pass and chest pass. Passing to a moving player Recap the footwork rule including the pivot jumping and quick feet activities to develop balance and co-ordination and a change of pace. Ball handling skills including moving, catching and footwork drills (1) Static passing in twos (2) One player moving forward to catch the ball What passes can we use in netball? How do we decide which pass to use? Cones (3) One player moving sideways to catch the ball Introduction to the basic dodge How to get free Highlight the importance of moving into a space to get free Reinforce footwork. Receiver making a target Sprint dodge in 3 s How can we help a player throw with more accuracy? When do we need to release the ball and where do aim the ball? Small games in 1/3 court 5 consecutive passes equals a goal What makes a good sprint dodge? Introduce simple rules ball out of court/ 3 seconds/ 3 feet footwork. Highlight the need to have possession. Lesson 3 Reinforce passing and Warm-up to include running and jumping and quick feet activities to
6 moving Directional passing towards a target develop balance and co-ordination and a change of pace. Passing and moving one stationary player and the other player moving forwards, sideways and using angles to create space. When and where do you make the pass? Which pass? Cones Netball courts Demonstration of body position for shooting Introduction to shooting Focus on a two handed shot with the ball held high. Feet shoulder width apart. Pupils to practice shooting action against the wall and the netball rings. Encourage close range shooting from different positions Pupils to feed back key points for shooting Directional small-sided games including shooting. What are the strengths of your team? Lesson 4 Introduce the positions for a full game and the court layout on the whiteboard Give 2 areas that could be developed further? Introduce the concept of attack and How many players on one team?

Some groups may need to spend more time on shooting and directional passing towards a goal. Netball courts Sports Hall wall Netball posts Whiteboard and pens Lesson 5 Introduce man to man marking Recap positions on the whiteboard using pupil knowledge. Develop areas of responsibility. Introduction to the contact rule Encouraging marking in the game Warm-up to include running and jumping and quick feet activities to develop balance and co-ordination and a change of pace. Encourage shadowing activities. Shadowing in pairs along a line - facing each other and then behind the other. Assess pupil knowledge of positions and starting positions Defending coaching cards
8 Demonstration of how to stand and move and change direction. Marking and interception drill in 3 s using point system. Use of coaching defending cards. When in the game do you mark your player/opponent? What makes a good defender? Netball courts Whiteboard and pens Netball posts Full game with the emphasis on marking and interception. 1 point for an interception. Some groups may spend more time in small-sided games Lesson 6 Develop man to man marking and interception Reinforce sprint dodge Pupil led warm-up including running and jumping. Stretching Man to man marking drill in square 3 v 1 Recap defending/sprint dodge drill to highlight main skills of the game. What makes a good defender? What makes a good sprint dodge? Netball courts Whiteboard and pens Netball posts Shooting drills. Full game and assessment of skills and knowledge of rules.
