5 Coach valuator valuation Coach valuator valuation Purpose of Coach valuator valuation and Certification valuation and certification confirm that Coach valuators are capable of doing what is deemed important to the evaluation of coaches in a given context. Certification promotes favourable evaluating behaviours that have a positive impact on Coach valuator development. Certification is about acknowledging that Coach valuators have met expectations by providing evidence of competence in the criteria evaluated. It is not about recognizing the perfect Coach valuator. Basis of Coach valuator valuation Coach valuator evaluation reflects the ethical coaching practices promoted by the Canadian sport system (NCCP Code of thics, Fair Play, and the policies of the Canadian Centre for thics in Sport). The processes and procedures involved in Coach valuator evaluation and certification are administratively feasible, professionally acceptable, publicly credible, legally defensible, economically affordable, and reasonably accessible. Outcomes, Criteria, and vidence Outcomes, criteria, and evidence are the core of the system for evaluating and certifying Coach valuators: Outcomes are what the Coach valuators need to be able to do when they are evaluating coaches in a given context. Outcomes provide the foundation for both training and evaluation. Criteria are what will be evaluated within a given outcome. One or more criteria may be associated with one outcome. vidence is what aster Coach Developers (CDs) must see to confirm that Coach valuators have met a given criterion. vidence helps CDs and Coach valuators prepare for evaluation by giving them specific points of reference. It is possible to recognize and respect individual evaluation styles while validating the presence of critical evidence. vidence may be gathered 1) by directly observing the Coach valuator conducting an evaluation or 2) by collating data collected in a portfolio. Coach valuator Training Before they are evaluated, Coach valuators must either receive adequate training or demonstrate relevant experience. Coach valuator training should prepare Coach valuators to meet evaluation criteria. Page 1

6 Guide to valuating Coach valuators Coach valuator training is competency-based; in other words, Coach valuator training focuses on developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that Coach valuators need to have to effectively evaluate and support coaches. valuation Requirements valuation should take place after Coach valuators have had a number of opportunities to co-evaluate or evaluate on their own. Process for valuating Coach valuators Coach valuator evaluation is a five-step process: 1 Collect the Coach valuator s portfolio A Coach valuator portfolio consists of three assessments from coaches they ve evaluated and one self-assessment The forms for these assessments are the Coach s of the Coach valuator and the Self-assessment by the Coach valuator 2 ark the Coach valuator s portfolio Use the Summary of s tool to mark the Coach valuator s portfolio Use the Coach valuator valuation Tool to assess the portfolio against NCCP minimum standards 3 Debrief the portfolio with the Coach valuator Coach valuators learn best through debriefs Additional evidences may be gathered during the debrief The debrief is a chance to provide feedback to the Coach valuator The debrief is an opportunity for the Coach valuator to reflect on his or her own practices with the support of an CD 4 Create an Action Plan An Action Plan will help Coach valuators improve their performance on the criteria they need to work on The Action Plan is an agreed-on next steps for the Coach valuator and the Coach valuator and the CD create it together All Coach valuators, regardless of the result of their evaluation, receive an Action Plan 5 Complete administrative requirements The CD sends copies of the valuation Table and the Action Plan to the governing organization Page 2

7 Coach valuator valuation The result of the Coach valuator s evaluation is entered in the Locker Any additional paperwork required by the governing organization is completed Page 3

8 Guide to valuating Coach valuators Coach valuator valuation Tool This valuation Tool lists the evidences you must look for in your on-site evaluations of Coach valuators and presents a Summary of valuation that allows you to determine the Coach valuator s standard of performance. 15 Coach valuator valuation Tool Summary of valuation To become certified, a Coach valuator must achieve or on all three outcomes. All Coach valuators will receive an Action Plan. Coach valuators whose performance is described as will complete, with you, an Action Plan designed to bring the Coach valuator to the level of. You have three choices regarding the Coach valuator s status: The Coach valuator is recommended as a Certified Coach valuator The Coach valuator can be re-evaluated after completing an Action Plan The Coach valuator is not recommended as a Certified Coach valuator Your final determination of the Coach valuator s status should be based upon the data gathered about each of the three outcomes. This data should be considered within the entire context of the information gathered in the portfolio and the debrief, as well as your own professional judgement, experience, and common sense. For example: If the Coach Developer achieved the standard in two of the outcomes without having a significant negative effect on the overall coach evaluation, you could recommend that the Coach valuator complete an Action Plan and then be re-evaluated. You may also decide that the portfolio does not provide you with enough information and you may need to observe the evaluation in person. Note, however, that you UST NOT recommend the Coach valuator as a Certified Coach valuator if any of the coach portfolios indicates that the Coach valuator s standard in any of the following areas is, as acceptance of such behaviour would undermine the effectiveness of the NCCP and people s views of the Program: Presents a negative image of Canadian sport and models inappropriate values and behaviours Lacks knowledge of the context and outcomes required to be evaluated Uses language that is racist, sexist, or demeaning to others Allows others to use language that is racist, sexist, or demeaning Provides feedback that is negative or judgemental or both Page 11
