3 CVYL NEWSLETTER Issue 2 3 New Little League Bat Regulations for the 2018 Season With the Little League International Board of Directors formally adopting USA Baseball s new standard for bat performance testing, Little League International fully supports this program. For more than seventy-five years, Little League has used improvements in science, engineering, and technology to take the sport of baseball to higher levels. By utilizing the most current advancements available, manufacturers can now develop bats with a wood-like performance, which is important for the long-term success of the game. Developed by a USA Baseball committee of scientific experts, Little League Baseball has decided to adopt the new bat standard for mandated use effective January 1, All national members of USA Baseball, including Little League, are encouraged to adopt this new standard. Little League-approved bats can be used through December 31, 2017, and our current bat regulations will be in effect until then. That includes the moratorium prohibiting the use of all 2 ¼ inch barrel baseball bats constructed with composite material in the barrel, unless approved. The rule will be implemented in our 7 through 12 age groups. Tee Ball will remain unchanged. Non-wood and laminated bats used in the Little League Majors, Intermediate, and Minors Division, shall bear the USA Baseball logo signifying that the bat meets the USABat USA Baseball s Youth Bat Performance Standard. All BPF 1.15 bats will be prohibited beginning with the 2018 season. Additionally, starting in 2018, the bat diameter shall not exceed 2⅝ inches for these divisions of play. Additional information is available at LittleLeague.org/batinfo. 8U Softball Division Overhaul The Conemaugh Valley Youth League is in the process of making changes to our current 8U softball division. The configuration had girls age four through eight years old playing in the division. Under this format, there was a big age and skill gap. Our revamped 8U Division will now consist of players that are seven and eight years old. The new format will be competitive and will be similar to our 8U Tournament rules to help them make the next step to 10U. Players are still eligible to sign up at 4 years old and will still need a parent on the field and in the dugout with them. However, girls from ages for to six will now be placed in our Tee Ball Division which is all instructional. This will be a co-ed division that will play entirely in-house.

CVYL encourages parents that would like to attend to either buy and or sell tickets to individuals that are interested in attending. The last two years we tried this formula and sold 390 out of 400 tickets and had a great crowd at the raffle. Tickets will be available at each sign-up, sub and pizza pickup, or contact any league officer. We will again hold the raffle at This Is It Banquet Facility, 1300 Frankstown Rd, Johnstown, PA. Doors will open at 5PM with the raffle starting at 6PM. I.D is required to enter and you must be 21 to attend. The cost of the ticket is $30 and includes the catered buffet style meal, beer/drinks, and a chance to win the firearms listed on the ticket. Additional walk around guns, 50/50, and other hunting items will be chanced off during the raffle. We hope to see you at the gun raffle! Concession Stand Parents are required to work in the concession stand up to two times per year for each child they have playing in the league. If the parent or guardian does not work their assigned date/s, their son or daughter cannot play in any league games until a $25 penalty has been paid to the league per occurrence. PLEASE WORK YOUR DAYS OR TRADE WITH FELLOW PARENTS. Parents can opt out of working the concession stand by paying $25.00 per child at time of signups.

5 CVYL NEWSLETTER Issue 2 5 Our History The 2016 season marked 65 years since the founding of an organized Little League in East Conemaugh by Lou Salem and Conemaugh Legion. In those 65 years, there were leagues in every community surrounding East Conemaugh. Franklin, Daisytown, East Suburban (Frankstown Field), and East Conemaugh were leagues that coexisted within the current Conemaugh Valley School District boundary saw those leagues combine into one, Conemaugh Valley Youth League, with the main playing field in East Conemaugh. CVYL has a collection of pictures and information from the early years on our website. We are looking for more pictures and information that will help us have a more complete history of our storied beginnings of a league. If you own a business and would like to advertise with us, visit our website at and under announcements click The cost is $135 for a new banner sign and it will be displayed from April through October. Who Can Volunteer? Anyone can apply to become a volunteer. Whatever talents or skills you have, we can use them! Across the country, volunteers are grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, retirees, community leaders, former Little Leaguers, friends, neighbors, and more. Any community member who wishes to become a volunteer may apply. All parents of children involved in Little League Baseball and Softball are strongly encouraged to volunteer. As a parent, volunteer, you have the opportunity to spend quality time with your child in a safe, fun-filled environment. Oftentimes, parent and child social lives parallel each other. Volunteering allows your life and your child's life to intersect on common ground, with shared interests and goals. How Do I Become A Volunteer? Parents, take a minute to fill out the volunteer form while registering your child. If you are not a parent and would like to volunteer, take a minute to fill out the form while visiting registration. Becoming a Volunteer at CVYL Why Should I Become a Volunteer? Little League Baseball and Softball is an organization designed to build good citizens. It is a program of leadership, preparing today's youth to be tomorrow's leaders. CVYL relies on a devoted group of adult volunteers to help ensure that the organization remains structured and runs smoothly. We are always looking for responsible and enthusiastic individuals to support and coordinate league events and activities. As a volunteer, you should have a keen interest in the safety, well-being, and overall development of children. By reading further, you will discover that the benefits of volunteering are endless. You will also gain a better understanding of why you should become involved, When you apply to become a volunteer, you give the local Little League organization the right to conduct necessary background checks. What Can I Volunteer To Do? No experience is required to become a volunteer. Most of the volunteer opportunities require little or no training. CVYL representatives will provide you with any necessary training (as well as support and encouragement), as they deem necessary. The best volunteers are those who are able to bring added enjoyment to the game simply be being themselves. What you see during Little League games is a mere fraction of what you can do as a volunteer. You can volunteer to help in virtually any aspect of Little League Baseball or Softball.

10 CVYL NEWSLETTER Issue , Northern Cambria, VE Arbutus Red, West Suburban, Somerset and Forest Hills. Conemaugh Field Project Thank you to all of the teams, coaches, parents and volunteers that came out to support our tournament and made it a huge success! The main field in East Conemaugh recently underwent renovations after the season concluded in mid-august. All work was completed by the CVYL grounds crew, Frank Bailey, and Steve Coy. The grass area between the pitcher s mound and the first base line was the area of concentration. The plan was to attach a 20 foot extension wye onto the existing drainage pipe that runs through the area. The existing infield pipe was blocked solid prompting the removal of the pipes and materials and replaced with new materials. The pipe was replaced from the first base cutout to home plate that turned to the first base dugout. A total of 99 feet of pipe was replaced along with raising the targeted sinking area with about 15 ton of top soil and a total reseed of the area. Phase two of the project disconnected the dugout drains from the field drainage system and put them on a separate system. 149 feet of pipe was added.
