1 The Diamond Dust SPRING BALL - April 27th, 2013 Riviera Little League Dear Little League Volunteers, Little League International Salutes the Efforts, Commitment of its Volunteers During National Volunteer Week In recognition of National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the opportunity and reflect on the influence that Little League volunteers have had on generations of children throughout the world. Little League volunteers understand that no task is too small, and relate to the mantra - We do what has to be done in support of the children - regardless of the size and location of their neighborhood. Since Little League s founding nearly 75 years ago, volunteers have been the heart of our organization. Through the dedication, time and talents of Little League volunteers, millions of children learn about life and sport. Whether a rural community or a big city, remarkable stories of volunteerism surround us, and each story is unique. We appreciate young volunteers, and those who have given years of their lives to Little League. With more than one million volunteers, we know there are more to come. In this month of April, the traditional start of the baseball and softball season, I simply wanted to express my personal thanks to each and every one of you - those just starting out as volunteers in Little League, and those who have devoted decades to providing a safe, fun and healthy outlet for children around the world. As we look forward to next season s celebration of Little League's 75th Anniversary, please accept my best wishes for a great season in 2013! Sincerely, Dr. Davie Jane Gilmour Chairman of the Little League International Board of Directors

4 Snack Shack Corner! Getting a little CHILLY in the stands? What couldn t be better than a Hot Chocolate and a Churro to warm you up. And, what ball player wouldn t love a cool Gatorade to quench their thirst after the big game. I ve come to the conclusion that the two most important things in life are good friends and a good bullpen. -Bob Lemon Don t forget RLL New Hot Items on the menu, chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks! I m getting hungry just thinking about it... Stump the Ump Learning the Rules of Little League Situation: A Manager asks his pitcher to Intentionally Walk a batter. He tells the umpire and says he doesn t have to pitch to the batter. The umpire agrees and no pitches are added to the pitchers pitch count. Is the umpire correct? (Answer on last page)

6 Honda Donation Helps Preserve Baseball and Softball Season for Staten Island Little League By Communications Division SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. Honda, the official vehicle sponsor of Little League and national sponsor since 1996, donated $50,000 to the Staten Island Little League to help rebuild their baseball facilities, which were severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy. With Honda s donation, storm ravaged fields, bleachers and dugouts were repaired in time for the league s 32-team opening day on April 20th. On opening day, Honda presented the Staten Island Little League with a ceremonial check and host several fundraising events in an effort to increase community awareness. The additional money raised through these events will help replace damaged scoreboards and field lighting plus fund other needs throughout the season. For 17 years Honda has enjoyed a relationship with Little League Baseball and Softball. We're proud to play a part in getting Staten Island Little League up and running to make it possible for kids to play ball this year, Susie Rossick, Sr. Manager, Honda Regional Marketing, said. Though much still needs to be done, they are off to a good start, and we look forward to helping them with opening day and beyond." The Honda hosted fundraising activities on opening day included, Sing Badly for a Good Cause: Car-e-oke in which parents were encouraged to sing their worst rendition of Take Me Out to the Ball Game inside an Odyssey minivan with Honda donating up to $50 to the Staten Island Little League for each parent who participated. Other games included, Musical Car Seats in an Odyssey, charades events and kids activities with similar donation incentives. I was extremely surprised when I was notified by Honda about receiving the $50,000 grant. Everyone sees on the news how Staten Island was affected structurally, but no one thinks of the families and kids that the storm affected, Michael Colini, President of the Staten Island Little League, said. I cannot think of a better way to express our gratitude than by making sure our kids can get out on the diamond and play ball! Staten Island Little League Volunteers worked repairing their fields after Hurricane Sandy.

It s a great way to get YOUR team into The Diamond Dust. Good articles include great games, team events and other RLL activities. Remember when writing articles to keep them in the spirit of Riviera Little League. Articles about games should be positive and include information about both teams. We may edit submissions for content and length or reject inappropriate articles. Please send your submissions, pictures, and suggestions. The deadline is each week on Wednesday by noon to be included in that weeks Diamond Dust. Thanks for your time and help! Your Diamond Dust Team Kirk Adams Gale Cardenas Mike Hirsh sixadams1@yahoo.com Stump the Ump (Answer) Situation: Wrong Rule 2.00 BASE ON BALLS A BASE ON BALLS is an award of first base granted to batter who, during their time at bat RECEIVE four pitches outside the strike zone. This rule was re-written to add the word RECEIVE when daily pitch count rules were put into place. The pitcher MUST throw the balls.
